Justice minister Alex Davies-Jones says foreign criminals affected by the expanded “deport now, appeal later” immigration scheme would have been removed anyway, but that the process is now being sped up. She also says it is unfair for UK taxpayers to fund their bed and board or for offenders to take up spaces in British prisons. Report by Covellm. 00:00so currently how it works there are eight countries to which we have these types of
00:03agreement with where you deport first and appeal later we're expanding that we're
00:06trebling it in fact going up to 23 countries where foreign criminals will be
00:10deported to back to their country of origin and then they will hear their
00:13appeals on whether or not they have a right to remain in the UK in their
00:17country of origin rather than staying here in the united kingdom now once
00:21they are deported to their country of origin it is up to their country of
00:24origin what they do with them but ultimately these foreign criminals would
00:28have been deported at 50 percent of their sentence anyway we're just accelerating
00:32that process because we don't think it's fair that the UK taxpayer should be
00:35paying for their bed and board and also that they are able to you know
00:39clog up our prisons spaces that we need we need to make sure that we are
00:43deporting these individuals with no right to return
