Gator wonders if the NHL will go the way of the NBA?
Transcript
00:06locking in on a monday it's the carson anderson program hour two thanks for being with us
00:10all right you got a theory it's an nhl theory it's not a theory it's a question okay that i
00:16wonder if should the nhl consider this and i don't know if they're considering this or not
00:21and how would fans feel about this and how would you doug cars feel about it how would
00:25king feel about it how would anybody feel about this what if the nhl went with the same playoff
00:34system the nba uses and you had play-in games to get in it's been ultra competitive i'm just looking
00:41at this year ultra competitive to get into the playoffs right in the eastern conference in
00:45particular all these teams hanging around get towards the end of the season and teams are
00:51going to be missing out by by that much what if they had a playoff game oh now you like
00:58to play in
01:00you don't go to dayton i'm asking i didn't say i liked it i'm asking the question i said what
01:04what would happen if they did this and no i'm not going to date but i go to date and
01:07watch the
01:08red wings take on uh the islanders yes i would just now with doug i go with doug but so
01:15here's
01:15what's funny is i don't i think the nba adding these playing rounds is like one of these cute
01:22little gimmicks that has no bearing on who wins the nba championship i don't think any play in teams
01:29in the nba yep no in the nhl i don't need to expand the playoff field because in the nhl
01:37anything can
01:37happen and so i think you could potentially be letting teams in more teams in that haven't earned
01:45it in the regular season that can actually take out teams that have earned it so you know i guess
01:52that would be my thought against it but is this really are you really only doing this so the
01:57red wings would make the playoffs not at all okay because this is what it sounds like am i am
02:01i the
02:01only one no i think the same thing that's not it's not at all actually no i feel like if
02:05they
02:06were in first place you'd never even thought of this idea uh no i'd probably be vehementally
02:10against it which is which is why it's starting to even feel like more like you're doing it
02:15but as i but as we've seen how tight it has been in the eastern conference there are fan bases
02:21that
02:21are left out and it sucks but we talk about the in like major league baseball when they added more
02:25teams to the wild card why do they do that because it got more fan interest and created more revenue
02:31for the league you should do the same thing for the nhl so baseball now let's what 12 of 30
02:38teams in
02:39nhl and nba nhl let's it's the same thing in the end well actually it's less than the nhl than
02:45is the
02:46nba because the nba has to play out play in games i think the idea of letting half the teams
02:50in
02:50is already too many i don't feel like you did you know the top half of the teams
02:57i mean they're never going to gear back okay they're never going to give post-season revenue
03:02back but yeah i don't i i don't need this okay so i'm good so you know that and the
03:09nba really
03:09doesn't need it either but the nba i just feel like it's irrelevant playing teams gonna be first
03:15round fodder anyway 99 times out of 100 but makes it more competitive you know what it sounds like you
03:22came up with you came up with either a how do i create a system to get the red wings
03:26in or b i'm
03:27worried about the finances how can i create more revenue by adding more games well it was definitely
03:32more it was more b than it was a i don't that the red wings thing was not the reason
03:36to bring this
03:36up uh although it is convenient that it works in that way especially right now but just the thought
03:43of what's happened over the over years like we added more teams in baseball and i think we've
03:48embraced that they've got this play-in system with the nba which is intriguing but to your point
03:53right it's just first round fodder that's what makes this more interesting to me is the nhl it's
03:59not first round fodder did when's the last time the nhl changed their playoff format well when they
04:05went to this conference thing and now the top three teams in each division i mean i guess you're right
04:08how they put i guess when's the last time they had anything less than 16 teams oh i think it's
04:14been
04:14forever i did too but you're right they've changed how they dole out the seating and all that i used
04:19to have 16 of the 21 teams maybe yeah well yeah i think it would have going back to when
04:24i was a
04:24when i was a youth pre-wha merger or even post-wha well yeah but i mean but the the
04:32before the wha teams came in but interesting yeah i i personally don't even like it for the nba but
04:39actually gator you're you're probably going to predict the future at this point because
04:43yeah it's all about money we talk about with the nfl all the time but it's not just the nfl
04:46every
04:47league just wants more money more revenue you know how you get more revenue more games that's all that
04:51matters that's why and more games that matter like playoff exactly so it probably will happen even
04:55though i personally don't like it i know doug you don't like it i don't like it the nba i
04:59think it's
04:59dumb they're just doing it for more games it's more advertising more revenue more money for the league
05:05well and gary bettman came from the nba but don't think it like yeah exactly that's why i think it's
05:10going to happen but don't think it's because oh they're so tight these we just want to get
05:13no they want more money of course it is 248-539-9797 let's go to ray in commerce hi ray
05:20good morning doug and gator how are you guys doing okay what's up oh not much just want to
05:25get the champion chum votes in so i think it's pretty self-explanatory for the champ uh the tigers
05:30great weekend nice bounce back after dropping the minnesota series um the chump however is so up
05:36your guys's alley i had a call on about this one so i don't know if you caught this over
05:39the weekend
05:39the ufl nobody cares about the league nobody cares about the two teams that played over the weekend
05:44orlando and louisville but the game went to overtime went to sudden death overtime and ended on a penalty
05:50not a touchdown not a field goal but a penalty because of their wacky rules and i think it's egregious
05:55what what was the what was the rule i didn't watch it i didn't know you could end on a
05:59penalty what
06:00happened i think it was something where like if there was like two penalties by one team and
06:05overtime period and then one team's awarded like two points thereby ending the game
06:10and it wasn't even like i think it might have been like pass interference or something but
06:15this is like so out of left field something that you guys would completely come up with
06:19halfway through your show so i'm like yep i gotta i've been waiting all weekend to call on about this
06:24one ufl game ends on two penalties huh i'm gonna have to i'm gonna have to look at this see
06:29if i can
06:29figure this out but absolutely i had to chump them oh thank you very much you okay over there
06:37issue in the studio is there yeah are we going to air it publicly no i don't think we're going
06:43to
06:43air it publicly but i've talked to you about it privately oh okay i see now i know uh louisville
06:47committed two consecutive defensive penalties during orlando's two-point conversion attempt
06:52causing the second penalty to be ruled a successful conversion immediately ending the game
06:58so the storm beat the night yep i didn't realize people could see those games because it was on
07:04like channel seven wasn't it and we're not getting channel we're not getting abc right now
07:08you could probably stream them screen uh stream the games and you're you're dedicated you are
07:13dedicated uh let's go to brandon and shelby township hi brandon hey guys how's it going what's up
07:19so instead of expanding the playoffs they need to go back to the original format where it's the top
07:24eight teams every other sport does the top teams but the nhl has a division versus division thing
07:30so like philadelphia is only three points ahead of us but just because they're third in their division
07:35they get an automatic bid so brandon i guess i always look at it if you're going to have divisions
07:41they should mean something it to me it feels like the the nba has just done away with divisions
07:48and i guess they still exist but nobody everybody lists the standings by conference and they do
07:53their seating that way so i mean yeah if they're going to have divisions there should be some i don't
07:59know why the nhl does it the way they do i don't either i i mean we have you have
08:03divisions in every
08:04sport in the nfl division champ gets in that's that's your reward for for winning the division and
08:11that's it and then wild cards are doled out based on records and it's the same thing in in baseball
08:17division champs get in and then the wild cards go to the team with the best records i don't know
08:21why the nhl has made it the way that they have this isn't why the red wings are out the
08:25red wings
08:26are out because they're not good enough but the thing is too i'm sorry no the weird thing is too
08:31that the two always versus the three in their division so you're always going to have the two
08:35versus three a divisional matchup so back in the day you'd see like us versus the coyotes us versus
08:39the ducks you'd have a bunch of cool matchups but now you're always going to see
08:43yeah like minnesota versus dallas so you're never going to see a bunch of different matchups
08:47so it kind of kills it yeah yeah and we don't we don't even we've never got to experience it
08:51so
08:51right and geography is not an issue anymore you know so it's like he had when the wings were in
08:58the western conference and had to play the aforementioned ducks or right you know edmonton or
09:03whomever um everything's in the same time zone basically here so it's strange two four eight five three
09:09nine ninety seven ninety seven all right so every day we aggregate nfl draft information as it
09:15pertains to the lions and uh go over the very latest reporting as we move in on the national
09:21football league draft lesson less than two weeks to go it's karshen anderson 97 one
