Edmonton has once again lost in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, should the Red Wings call the Oilers to gauge interest in a trade?
Transcript
00:00There is nobody that loves this more than you.
00:03No, I'm more of the anti-Leaf thing.
00:05I find the whole Canada-Stanley Cup thing more amusing than anything else.
00:10It gives me another excuse to sing a Woe Canada
00:12and change the lyrics a little bit.
00:14But Montreal, they're up 3-2.
00:20Game 6 tonight at the Bell Center is going to be going crazy.
00:28And the way the draw is set up,
00:30they don't have to play Carolina, who will probably beat Philly.
00:34So they'll play the winner of Boston-Buffalo.
00:36I very much enjoy when Toronto gets knocked out.
00:40Yes.
00:41That is one of my favorite things in hockey.
00:44But beyond that, I don't have much of an issue with the Canadian teams.
00:49Montreal is probably next in line with that.
00:52But I always have kind of rooted for Winnipeg.
00:55Yeah.
00:55I love their logo, what they have right now.
00:58Vancouver, I kind of would like this.
01:00Vancouver.
01:00They've been in the finals a couple times.
01:02Yeah, I didn't hear there.
01:03Edmonton, I feel so bad for Connor McDavid.
01:06And at the same point, they got eliminated last night,
01:10and McDavid just basically says that they're just not good enough.
01:13Yeah, he says they're an average team with great expectations.
01:17And they have two of the best hockey players in the NHL.
01:22And they still have other good players on that team,
01:25and they just can't get over the hump.
01:27They can't get a goalie.
01:28They got into the finals.
01:29The play's good in the playoffs.
01:31And they can't win in the finals with this group.
01:33Obviously, historically, they've been amazing.
01:35Yes.
01:36But it's different with this group.
01:38So because McDavid is a free agent after next season,
01:42he signed the extension with him.
01:44It was just a two-year extension he gave him,
01:45and he cut them a break, even signed for less than what his value is.
01:49And then said, fine, I'll sign the two-year extension with you.
01:51But after that, I'm a free agent.
01:54I mean, if I'm, me personally, if I'm the GM of the Edmonton Oilers,
01:58I'm trading Conor McDavid.
02:00Yes.
02:01And I'm doing it this offseason.
02:05If I'm Steve Iserman, I'm absolutely talking to Edmonton about it.
02:11Do they have enough to offer to get him
02:13where it wouldn't completely gut this team
02:15where we basically have Conor McDavid and that's it?
02:17Because that's not, obviously, it wasn't good enough in Edmonton.
02:19Why would it be good enough here in Detroit?
02:20I think it would start with Sider and, like, two number ones.
02:25I don't think Sider is one they would part with.
02:27I think he's an untouchable.
02:28I think it starts with Raymond.
02:31That's a no-brainer.
02:32Well, it's not.
02:33Wait, wait, wait.
02:34Hold on a second.
02:34Oh, no, you hold on a second.
02:35Please.
02:36It's not just Lucas Raymond.
02:38No, I know.
02:39No, I know.
02:39I think it starts there.
02:41Yes.
02:41And then you add some more players from your roster.
02:43You might have to include Edmonton as well.
02:45And then you're talking about your top prospects who you have,
02:48which would also be a goaltender that you have to send there
02:51because you have, like, four of them in your system
02:53which are really highly regarded.
02:54And then you're also talking picks.
02:56Do you make the trade without guaranteeing that he's going to resign?
03:02Because, you know, Stevie allegedly didn't do that with Quinn Hughes.
03:06And if you watched any of that game last night,
03:08Quinn Hughes was freaking unbelievable.
03:10He's fantastic.
03:11He's an amazing skater and creates his opportunities.
03:16Yeah, obviously you would have to have an assurance
03:18that you can sign him to a longer-term deal
03:20and understand that that's going to cost $14, $15 million a year.
03:23Yeah, well, there's a cap, so they can go to the cap.
03:26The reason I said, look, obviously Sider's the Red Wings' best player.
03:32Okay?
03:33And how old is your younger brother, Kenny?
03:36Moe is, what, 23, 24?
03:38Okay.
03:39And McDavid is, what, 29 or 30?
03:42He shows no, you know, there's no evidence of him slowing down offensively.
03:48Is he a great, does he make this team tougher to play against like gritty and sandpaper?
03:53No.
03:54But if you can't occupy the puck, what difference does it make?
03:59As much as I love Moe Sider, if you're going to trade Moe Sider and Picks
04:05or another player for Connor McDavid and you're going to re-sign him,
04:08yes, Connor McDavid's generational, even at his age at 30.
04:13Moe Sider's a terrific player, but he's not even the best player in his position in this league.
04:20You have to, I mean, look, it's not going to happen.
04:23But I think where he's going to end up going is someplace like San Jose that has Celebrini
04:29or someplace like Chicago at Bedard or maybe he wants to, you know, do something else there.
04:35Hopefully it's not Toronto or he has his infatuation of playing with Crosby
04:40or something like that in Pittsburgh for a couple of years.
04:44But I don't think the Wings have a chance at him,
04:46and especially if you're not going to give up Sider.
04:49If I'm Edmonton, I hang up the phone if Sider's not even included.
04:55Well, if I'm the Red Wings, I'm probably not going to part with Sider in a trade
04:59because I think he's the guy you're building around.
05:02And defensemen are so hard to find a guy like Sider that you have to hang on to him at
05:08all costs.
05:09I think they have players that they can give up.
05:12So wait, wait.
05:12You'd rather have, forgetting the other players involved or the other picks or whatever,
05:18you'd rather have Moe Sider at age, you'd rather have 10 years of Moe Sider
05:22than basically five or six years of Conor McDavid is what you're saying.
05:29I don't know if I'm going to, if I'm going to sign McDavid,
05:31is it going to be for that long of a contract?
05:34Yes.
05:36At his age?
05:37Yes.
05:38Well, you're answering the question for me.
05:40I know.
05:40I'd like to think it through here for a second and answer it for myself.
05:45Because there's something that will concern Red Wing fans about Conor McDavid,
05:49and that it is, I mean, obviously he's a phenomenal player.
05:52But Conor McDavid hasn't gotten Edmonton over the hump.
05:56I want Conor McDavid, but is he overvalued even in this league?
06:00I want to hang on to Sider because I think you need to have the great defenseman
06:04to go with the great forward.
06:06If that means that I'm giving up, you're going to have to give up a ton of players.
06:11And I think you're blowing off how good Lucas Raymond is.
06:14I think Lucas Raymond was hurt the second half of the season.
06:16He was still a point-a-game guy.
06:19Lucas Raymond is the starting point, along with a Nate Danielson,
06:23a Branzig knee guard, several first-round picks, Simon Edvinson.
06:27One of the goalies, Coach.
06:29Yeah, maybe if not, they get their pick.
06:32Do you want Sandeen Pellica or do you want Edvinson?
06:34Which defenseman would you rather have out of those two?
06:37And give them their pick of your goaltenders.
06:40I think there's a package there that works without having to give up Mo Sider
06:46because I don't want to give up Mo Sider.
06:48And if you're Edmonton, you're definitely going to want to get a defenseman back
06:52as part of the trade, but you're also going to have to get some offense back.
06:55And I think Raymond would give them that offense.
06:57Is it something Edmonton would do?
06:59I don't know because I don't know what the other offers from other teams would be.
07:02I do think the Red Wings have talent and prospects and draft capital
07:07that can get into the conversation.
07:09I guess that's where I'm at with that.
07:11But you're right.
07:12In order for any of this to work, there has to be a long-term contract in the offing
07:18as well.
07:19Not that it means anything.
07:20They have the bet online has the odds for Connor McDavid's next team.
07:28San Jose, the leader at 4-1, followed by Chicago, Toronto, Vegas, Montreal,
07:35Dallas, Boston, Philly, the Kings, Pittsburgh, Utah.
07:38The Red Wings are tied with the Rangers at 18-1.
07:42Boston, then Buffalo, Anaheim, Florida, New Jersey, and the rest goes on and on and on.
07:48Calgary's last, obviously.
07:51Yeah, sure.
07:52That would make sense, Calgary being the other team in that province.
07:58I'm curious to see what they end up doing.
08:00Maybe they hang on to them.
08:01If they're going to trade them, and I would absolutely trade them if I were Edmonton,
08:04try to get a haul of players.
08:05You would get a haul of players.
08:07And basically, you're rebuilding on the fly around Dreisaitl at this point.
08:12They still have really good players.
08:14It's amazing they just can't play.
08:16They can't get them done.
08:17The great Jake Wallman.
08:19They got Zach Hyman.
08:20They just don't have a goalie's part of their reason.
08:23Yeah, they've got good players, but you're right.
08:25They don't have goaltending, and they don't have the overall good enough defense.
08:29If you're Edmonton, do you say, F this, and just blow the whole thing up,
08:32and you trade everybody?
08:34Well, I mean, I don't think you can.
08:36I suppose, what would that fan base do?
08:40Well, they've been through it before.
08:42Yeah, they've been through it before when they were forced to with the Gretzky thing.
08:46Well, even after that, their current roster was basically built on number one
08:51or very highly ranked picks, starting with Nugent Hopkins.
08:55You know, and McDavid and Dreisaitl was a high pick.
08:58Boucher was a high pick.
09:01Well, you need the draft luck, the lottery luck to stay in there.
09:04There's no guarantees that you're going to get those.
09:06But, I mean, yeah, if I'm Edmonton, am I going to trade both Dreisaitl and McDavid?
09:11No.
09:12I wouldn't trade both of them because I think you'll get a haul for either player
09:16if you want to trade either one of them.
09:17But just food for thought, keeping that in mind with what's going to happen this offseason
09:21because I think Iseran is going to have to be aggressive in the trade market.
09:26I don't know if there's enough players that make sense free agent-wise.
09:30Max Bultman in The Athletic did an interesting piece the other day focusing on the five-on-five production.
09:35And players that are available free agent-wise that might fit that role, also players in trade that could fit
09:40that role.
09:41Alex Tuck was at the top of the list.
09:42Yeah, he was at the top of the list.
09:43And, you know, we'll see what they eventually end up doing.
09:47I think there's going to be some serious changes to this roster
09:52and that they will part with somebody that makes us go, wow, well, they parted with this guy.
09:57All right.
09:58It better be, you know, getting a player in return that's going to make sense and make a big difference.
10:04Doesn't Dreisaitl have more of that little grit than McDavid has that the wings are lacking?
10:11Now, he's signed more long-term, though.
10:13Yeah, I think he is signed more long-term.
10:16But, I mean, if I'm Edmonton, I'm not trading both of those guys.
10:19Probably not.
10:19No.
10:20248-539-9797 is the telephone number.
10:23Big game for the Pistons tonight.
10:25Game six in Orlando.
10:27Do or die?
10:28Will they do?
10:30Or will they die?
10:32And if they do, what happens on Sunday in a game seven?
10:37Are you going to be chesty about this?
10:39Or are you very skeptical?
10:41Are you a little bit like Stoney with Eeyore on this, thinking they're going to lose?
10:45What are your thoughts about tonight's game?
10:47We'll talk about it next year, 97-1.
10:48We'll talk about it next year.
