00:00When I'm Mackenzie, I dress very masculine.
00:02Like I like to say, I dress like a 12-year-old boy.
00:04You see the buttons, like some poor unfortunate soul is gonna have to button me up.
00:08They're like dripping in sweat and I'm like not sweating at all
00:11because I'm like, my clothes, my clothes dance.
00:40Hi, I'm Mothika and I'm currently on tour with Icy Stars
00:43for their Spin the Wheel tour, full US run.
00:47I think it's 29 shows in like 35 days.
00:51And yeah, I'm gonna be wearing some cool outfits.
00:57Um, this is my Mothikorp look from the music videos.
01:03So Evergreen Misery, um, yeah, this, uh, jacket I kind of customized,
01:09but the sharp, uh, the points are from Bat Norton.
01:14And, um, yeah, I wanted this like weird corporate surreal look.
01:18This is one of my Mothikorp pins and I actually made Mothika stand for something.
01:23So M-O-T-H-I-C-A is Mothika Observation Team Holdings Incorporated Cryptid Association.
01:31No one knows that.
01:33And then a stylist I worked with named, um, Scully Styles, she sewed these on,
01:37but my, uh, front of house engineer ruined it by saying it looks like toilet paper.
01:43On my steps.
01:45So that's super fun.
01:46And I like anything flowy because that means I don't have to move as much.
01:51You know, it can move for me.
01:53Yeah, so the original jacket doesn't have this with the collar on it.
01:57It's just no collar.
01:58And then for some reason, because I have a billion of everything,
02:01I have just a collar V that goes on top of it.
02:05So I just safety pinned it on.
02:08And, um, then the sleeves didn't have that at all.
02:11So it's just, like, adding that on and just layering and, um, you know, the undershirt.
02:18It's just, like, a little dicky you would wear back in, I don't know, the 80s or something.
02:24Um, yeah, it's always just trying to add more layers and movement.
02:31Um, this is what I think I'm going to wear tonight in Chicago.
02:36So she don't look like much, but this dress I got from a thrift store and it was white.
02:43And so I dyed it gray and it didn't take.
02:46So it's on some of the pieces.
02:48So it's just, like, this mothy color.
02:50Then I ripped a hole in it.
02:52And so it just has this, like, moth-eaten, like, gray thing.
02:56And I love anything with tulle or ruffles.
03:00And I'll get super cheap versions of things.
03:04So this was a dress.
03:05I cut it down the middle.
03:07And now it's, like, a shawl.
03:09And again, I have movement.
03:12Um, so it can do the dancing for me.
03:15And, like, my band is, like, they're, like, dripping in sweat.
03:18And I'm, like, not sweating at all.
03:19Because I'm, like, my clothes, my clothes dance.
03:23Yeah, so I thrift a lot because my mom actually, well, I started a vintage business that my mom took
03:31over.
03:32I don't know.
03:33So my mom, she's gone to estate sales, garage sales, and she calls herself the junk fairy.
03:37But I like to call her, like, a glorified hoarder of just things.
03:42So her whole house, everything is secondhand, including the soap.
03:46It's, like, she'll buy hotel soaps, like, bags of it.
03:50And she's, like, it's brand new.
03:50And I'm, like, mom, we can get some new things.
03:53But, yeah, then I'll find, like, whenever my mom goes to garage sales, she helps me style a lot of
03:58music videos.
03:59Like, this is a staple belt in eyewear on all the shows.
04:03And it's just this vintage piece that is perfect because, like, my in-ears go on it.
04:10It adds a little, you know, Victorian element.
04:14But, yeah, it does make it annoying if someone wants to know where I got something.
04:17I'm, like, my mom.
04:21Yeah, so I love thrifting, like, accessories and, yeah, unique pieces.
04:26But then with, like, shoes or boots, I'm always buying, like, well-made things, usually newer.
04:33So this dress I think I'm going to wear for my birthday show that's happening on March 12th.
04:39And this is by a designer called La Lune.
04:43And their pieces are really expensive, but this was on sale for, like, $200 or something.
04:47So I was, like, I have to have it.
04:49I mean, it's definitely bridal.
04:50And, like, every, you know, you see the buttons.
04:53Like, someone, some poor unfortunate soul is going to have to button me up.
04:59Yeah, and I wore this for the Somewhere in Between music video.
05:02So my EP, Somewhere in Between, just came out.
05:05And basically, that music video was just me running around the woods looking ghastly because I had this Mothman mask
05:15that was supposed to come for a different music video.
05:18So last minute, I was, like, I need Mothman.
05:21I was, like, where should he be?
05:22In the woods.
05:23I remembered I had this.
05:24Bam.
05:25That's how that music video came out was really all a ploy for my Mothman mask.
05:31Um, and then this piece, uh, I wear with a corset on top, but this is by Selkie.
05:39And they did this whole, like, Halloween-y stripes.
05:41I love anything that looks like Beetlejuice.
05:45Uh, you know, black and white stripes are just my favorite thing ever.
05:51Yeah, whenever I buy clothes that I want to customize, I just kind of cut it very, um, uh, haphazardly
05:59myself.
06:00I have, you know, occasionally gone to a tailor, like, um, adding, like, a zipper and something.
06:07And I did get into sewing, and that lasted about two weeks.
06:11Where I was, like, I want to make corsets.
06:13And, like, you can't do that without being very precise.
06:17And to me, like, when I want to cut up clothes, a lot of times I'm, um, making something long,
06:23short in the front.
06:25Um, I'm like, I just want to do it right then and there.
06:31So, yeah.
06:32Um, what else do I have?
06:35This is super clutch for me on tour.
06:38So this is just my easy looks in my drop-dead bag.
06:41I'm wearing drop-dead Ollie Sykes brand.
06:43I love their clothes.
06:45But this is just easy things I can put together when I'm feeling lazy.
06:49And it's only day two and I'm already feeling that.
06:52So, you know, I have, like, various sheer items.
06:56Like, this used to have lining in it.
06:58I love to cut the lining out of things.
07:01Um, this is just probably from, like, a goth shop or sex shop.
07:07You know, those are also great places to find stuff that I want to wear on stage.
07:11I don't even know what this is.
07:12Oh, yeah, I do.
07:13This is more, um, this crazy thing is sleeves.
07:20So, again, when I'm feeling like I don't want to dance too much, my sleeves will do it for me.
07:28And that's why everyone always says, you have a Stevie Nicks vibe about you.
07:32She wore lots of flowy, um, layers.
07:36Um, so, yeah, there's just a lot of endless, endless amounts of mesh and ruffles.
07:43You know, that's what I go for.
07:45This one is actually from Etsy.
07:48Or, no, not from Etsy.
07:49This is from Depop.
07:50So, it's a wrap skirt.
07:52And on Depop or Etsy, I'll just search for a one-of-a-kind custom-made, um, and usually
08:01you'll find some designers or sometimes even, like, drag queens or burlesque performers that
08:05are selling something they had custom-made and then you get a cheaper custom item.
08:10Um, so that's super fun.
08:16Um, this belt is going to become super clutch.
08:20It's a dancer's, like, probably for, like, a, I don't know what kind of dance you'd wear
08:26this with, um, salsa or something.
08:30But it just goes around here and just instantly makes it a little bit more classy.
08:34But then I can put my in-ears on it, you know?
08:39So, that's always the biggest thing is, like, I have to have my in-ears clipped in.
08:43So, I need a belt.
08:44And luckily, I love, um, you know, leather and harnesses and shit like that.
08:49So, um, there's my easy look bag, which I will definitely be accessing for most of the
08:57talk.
08:58When I'm dressing not as Mothica, when I'm McKenzie, I dress very masculine.
09:03Like, I like to say, I dress like a 12-year-old boy.
09:05So, you'll see me in a beanie.
09:08You'll see me in, you know, Nine Inch Nails hat.
09:11I have, like, all sorts of dad hats.
09:14Um, I have, like, a Criss Angel one.
09:17Um, just, you know, baggy clothes, um, sweatpants, sweatshirts.
09:24Um, these sweatpants were from Mary Wyatt when I played, uh, Download Fest.
09:29They gifted me these.
09:31But, yeah, it's, that's the biggest learning curve when I go on tour.
09:35It's like, oh, no, I have to dress like a woman again.
09:38And it's like, those are the biggest difference.
09:40And eventually, like, I'd love to wear pants on stage.
09:42Or, like, just wear what, like, you know, Billie Eilish.
09:46Like, queen of baggy t-shirts.
09:48Like, oh, wouldn't that be nice?
09:49But I've committed myself to being corsets, fishnets, ruffles.
09:53And I love the way it looks.
09:55I just hate putting it on and taking it off.
09:59So, this is a choker I wear almost every show.
10:02It's made by Kingdom Chains.
10:05Handmade in London.
10:07Um, I added a little extra ball because, you know, when you're singing, you, your neck gets strained a bit.
10:15Um, and then, I think this is a Kill Star chain.
10:19So, this one just hangs a little lower.
10:21And it's like, you know, if you're not into jewelry, you're going to be like, those look the same.
10:26And I'm like, no, they're very different.
10:27These are completely different looks.
10:29Um, I also have this fun one I'm excited to wear.
10:35It almost looks like a, like a rosary, but, like, make it goth.
10:40Um, and just adds a little some something.
10:46And then, um, I have a bunch of these kind of harness chains I got, um, from a girl I
10:54actually knew in high school.
10:57And she makes these, and I can wear it as a top, or I can wear it upside down, and
11:03it will hang down like a belt.
11:06So, anything versatile is crucial when you don't want to bring a ton of stuff on tour.
11:13Like, I think we played 29 shows, and I brought 9 outfits.
11:18So, that feels modest to me.
11:20Some people would say that's still too many.
11:23And then, cheapo, like, this is, like, probably from, you know, the Bezos warehouse, you know, Amazon.
11:30But, it's just a little leg harness you can strap into something and have that go on your leg like
11:37that.
11:38Um, and it just adds a little something.
11:41Like, my outfits can be pretty boring if I don't accessorize them.
11:45Um, and something I always kind of ignore wearing is earrings.
11:52I mean, I have in-ears in, you know, I'm wearing wigs.
11:56So, you know, they get caught.
11:58But I'll sometimes put a dangly earring in.
12:01You can see they get very tangled up in here.
12:04Um, but that's super fun to add to.
12:08And, obviously, you know, I love weapons.
12:10I just put out the song Weapons.
12:11So, this one's actually Drop Dead brand.
12:16Um, and some little ear cuffs.
12:19And, yeah, I don't have all my wigs on display here.
12:22But that's another thing.
12:23I'm bringing three wigs on tour.
12:24So, depending on the night, I try them out and see which ones feel good.
12:28And I've had some, like, wig mishaps happen where, um, in London, my wig was falling off.
12:36And slowly, my bangs were getting shorter.
12:38And my forehead was getting bigger.
12:40And luckily, I had, like, a break in the middle of the set.
12:45And I got to go offstage.
12:46And I, like, my boyfriend at the time, I'm like, give me the phone.
12:49I say that.
12:50It was so scary.
12:51But then I just have to have less movement of my head.
12:55Because it's just, like, whew.
12:56Don't want it to go flying.
12:58Um, yeah, I have a few different wigs on this tour.
13:01I have one that's, like, grayish, bluish, greenish.
13:05Um, made by, um, Emily Velasco in Orlando, Florida.
13:10So, I brought it because I'm going to meet her for the first time.
13:13And it kind of matches this, actually.
13:15And then this one.
13:17And then, um, I have the blonde wig I've been wearing for this Mothacorp look.
13:24That's super long.
13:25And they're always human hair.
13:26And, yeah, it's super fun.
13:29Because, uh, I don't have to style my real hair.
13:33And, uh, I, my real hair, like, I have alopecia.
13:38So, that's why I started wearing wigs.
13:40And now it's just, like, become such an easier thing to throw on, um, before a show.
13:47But it is funny, like, when we got to the venue today, I wasn't wearing a wig.
13:50I wasn't wearing makeup.
13:51And there was a couple fans outside wanting to meet me and get a photo.
13:54And I was like, you don't want to see me looking like, you know, blank slate.
13:59I don't know.
14:00It's scary.
14:01So, sometimes, um, that helps because people won't recognize me.
14:07So, I got this new, um, makeup box that actually has its own light in it.
14:14Which is super crucial because when you're on the road, you never know if you're going to have a mirror
14:20in your green room.
14:21You'd be surprised.
14:22It's mostly dudes.
14:22And they're like, why would you need a mirror?
14:24Um, I did, packed very light.
14:28I barely have anything for this tour.
14:30I actually need to get some more makeup.
14:32But, yeah, wearing fake eyelashes is crucial.
14:34I feel like a naked mole rat without them.
14:38Um, I have this super cool palette that just has this, like, impression of, like, a body on it.
14:44And then it's just, like, beautiful glitters by Issa Maya.
14:49Um, but, you know, my first tour.
14:54I did, I went crazy with the makeup looks.
14:56And I was just, like, adding, like, bedazzling sparkles.
14:59And every night, it's a different look.
15:01And for this one, I mean, we're two days in.
15:03I'm already feeling, like, a little, like, let's just go easy right now.
15:09And then, eventually, when I get bored and the set feels easier, then I'll probably bust out the crazier looks.
15:15But it's funny.
15:16Certainly, like, I just love red eyeshadow.
15:18And some other eyeshadows will, like, not read well on stage.
15:23So, I brought four pairs of shoes for this tour.
15:27Uh, these are ones I've performed in the most.
15:30These are Demonia.
15:32And, um, they just instantly elevate, like, any look.
15:37I mean, elevate to me.
15:39And that, like, you can wear a frilly white dress with these and instantly it's, like, edgy and cool.
15:45They're also pretty comfortable.
15:47Obviously, I don't wear high heels.
15:49I wear wedges.
15:50Um, I wanted to wear them tonight.
15:52But the headliner, I see stars, they have these risers on stage.
15:56So, I practiced getting up on them.
15:58And it's adding, you know, six inches of height.
16:01So, I'm, like, I have to go with my more modest boots.
16:05So, the ones I'm wearing, they're called R13.
16:09And, um, these, it's funny.
16:11Like, these are still probably three, three and a half inches.
16:15But these are my, like, low boots.
16:17I'm, like, these are modest boots.
16:19And I just got them shined at the airport.
16:23So, that was fun.
16:25And, um, I'm hoping to bust out these.
16:27I actually got them when I was on tour with Hailstorm in Europe.
16:31A brand called Casa Day.
16:34And, um, they're super, like, you know, this, like, rubber grip.
16:38They're very, like, technical looking.
16:41Um, but, yeah.
16:43And I haven't performed in them much.
16:44So, it's always, like, finding what you feel comfortable on stage in and moving around.
16:50And I know some artists, like, Melanie Martinez, like, performs, like, barefoot so they can feel the bass.
16:56And I'm, like, oh, that would ruin my outfit.
16:58But eventually I'd like to have shorter shoes.
17:02We'll see.
17:03Or maybe I'll just go taller.
17:05Um, and then my fourth pair is just some slip-on Vans of, like, this is, this is what I
17:10wear when I'm just McKenzie.
17:13And, you know, comfort is key for me.
17:18Um, but it's funny.
17:20These do feel like my most comfortable platform boots.
17:22Because I have a crazy closet full of much crazier boots I would wear for a music video.
17:28But these are, like, oh, yeah, this is, like, uh, utilitarian on tour.
17:34I'm Mothika.
17:35I just released an EP called Somewhere in Between.
17:38Um, check it out.
17:39Find me on socials, at Mothika.
17:41Mothika.com
17:43MothikaMerch.com
17:44And, uh, thank you for checking out my closet.
17:47I'm Mothika.
17:48I'm Mothika.
