00:00My team of course is the best team. Chelsea. Oh no, what was it? Liverpool. This is where we go
00:05over all of our lines. This bus was actually made by Travis Barker. And this room was actually made for
00:12the bed to go up. He could set up his drum set.
00:43Hello everyone, it's Makua and I want to invite you to come and check out our bus on the road.
00:49What's up guys, it's Makua. I'm here with G-Love on tour, 10th anniversary Lemonade Tour. We got an awesome
00:55bus. I want to invite you guys inside to check it out and see how we live on the road.
00:59This is Jimmy Messer right here. Producer, guitarist, extraordinaire. One of the guys that believed in me from the beginning
01:06when I was laying on his couch. All blown out. Couldn't even move. And he said, if you're serious, I'm
01:11going to match you minute for minute. And now we're here today on the road. And we'll see what happens.
01:17In the back here we got Mr. Luke Benchivango. The little drummer boy. And he's the one that sets up
01:26this bus. All the technical stuff, the Playstations, the TVs. I mean, I even got him right here studying and
01:31making sure he knows exactly what we do and how to do it.
01:36And so these TVs run 24 hours a day and it's only me on TV. They have to study and
01:42make sure they learn the protocol and how to do it.
01:44So like I said, 24 hours a day. They're watching. I'm talking. And we can put the football game on.
01:50Football game? I don't know. Maybe it's going to be a hard sell today.
01:54But my boy Ryan Vandermark is on the bills right now. They're in the playoffs and we're going to go
01:59and support him.
02:00So yeah, you can change this. And they got lucky for today. Lucky the boys are playing.
02:03I want to introduce you guys to Kaz. This is our tour manager. The man that really keeps the operation
02:08going on the road.
02:10And it's such a blessing to have this guy on the road with me because not only does he keep
02:14our operations going, but if anything wants to go down, I know this man will be back to back with
02:19me all the way through whatever happens.
02:21And I really appreciate this guy being on tour. Thank you, brother.
02:24I also appreciate all these other guys just as much too, just so you know.
02:28So I just wanted to make it a little more private in here for you folks.
02:31So Jim, you want to hit the switch and close up that front door?
02:33Of course.
02:37You want the curtains?
02:39No, we're good like this. Thank you.
02:42So we got three TVs as you can see in the front lounge.
02:46Gaming, movies, TV shows, football games, and of course, me.
02:50We've been playing a lot of EA Sports FC, which is a soccer game.
02:54My team, of course, is the best team.
02:56Chelsea.
02:58Oh no, what was it? Liverpool?
02:59I don't even know what my team is.
03:02That's how good I am at it.
03:03But if you go on my YouTube, I smoke Luke, and that's all that really matters.
03:07But gaming, like I said, football games, TV shows.
03:11I mean, what are your guys' teams?
03:12What do you guys like to play?
03:13The real rivalry is right here.
03:16This is a non-stop.
03:17I smoked Elijah twice this morning.
03:20You guys are playing like the greatest hits, right?
03:23I was Arsenal.
03:23Yeah.
03:24Good team.
03:25He was some bullshit.
03:26Manchester, baby.
03:27Let's go.
03:29I don't get involved in these matters.
03:32Yeah, my daughter would learn soccer a lot better than me.
03:35I just make like I'm pressing buttons.
03:37I press all the buttons, and somehow it works out.
03:39So that's one thing.
03:40It's better to be lucky than good.
03:41Remember that.
03:42Well, right here we got our little galley.
03:45Of course, it's coffee on coffee.
03:46Jimmy, you know what?
03:47In fact, Jimmy's going to make us a coffee while we're filming this right now.
03:51While I take you through this.
03:52It's my official capacity.
03:53This is official barista right here.
03:55We got all the amenities.
03:57Of course, we got to get the Momofuku Chili Crunch.
04:00Without that, I don't know.
04:02The blueprint, we picked that up.
04:03Local roaster.
04:04Where was that?
04:06St. Louis.
04:08Right here, we got two refrigerators.
04:10So we got one right here.
04:13That's what they drink.
04:14That kind of stuff.
04:16And we got some other stuff in here.
04:18Of course, the beers for the beer drinkers.
04:21And there's the freezer down there.
04:23I'm not sure if there's anything in there.
04:24Some fruits.
04:25In the front galley, of course, we got the table.
04:28The work table.
04:29The planning table.
04:30This is where we go over all of our lines.
04:34I'm just playing.
04:39But I'm a sober guy, so I can joke about it.
04:43But, yeah, this really plays a big role.
04:45I mean, there's not that many seats when we're on the road.
04:48And there are a lot of people coming through.
04:49We want to make sure that we utilize all the space.
04:52Business goes down.
04:53Phone calls, meetings, whatever it is.
04:55The boys got to bust out the printer.
04:57Print set list.
04:59I mean, merch.
04:59All that stuff goes down right here.
05:01So a little meeting space.
05:02So our bus, when we're going down the road, is usually a lot smaller.
05:05There's a little alley here.
05:06Right now, we got the slides popped out.
05:08We're blessed to have two slides.
05:09One in the front and one in the back, which I'll show you later.
05:11But right now, this thing slides out, turns into a fully functioning meeting room, guest room.
05:19You know, after the shows, you might invite some people on here, have some fun.
05:22Show them the bus as well.
05:24Entertain some family and friends.
05:25And it's great to have a bus that actually slides out in two places.
05:29So that's kind of really the breakdown of how this goes up front.
05:34I'm also Luke's trash guy.
05:36Which, as you can see, I live with a bunch of, you know, a few children on here.
05:39And just like at home, I always tell them to take out the trash.
05:42And I thought they would have done that by now.
05:44But hey, you know, stranger things have happened.
05:48I'm just playing.
05:50We got our humidifier here.
05:52I am a chronic asthmatic my whole life since I was a child.
05:55I couldn't breathe.
05:57I was in the hospital nine months out of the year.
05:59So in these dry climates, you know, I come from Hawaii where it's a lot more humid and moisture in
06:04the air.
06:04So I like to keep that going 24 hours a day.
06:06It keeps me feeling better.
06:08It keeps me more able to breathe and keeps the asthma at bay in these drier conditions.
06:13So I really appreciate the boys for always keeping this going.
06:16In this cabinet right here, coffee mugs.
06:20Oh, see that?
06:22The greatest letter ever written.
06:26That's right.
06:28I got yours.
06:29I got one of those too.
06:29There you go.
06:31Jimmy.
06:32We're going to make one for all the boys right now.
06:34You know.
06:36Any time you're on tour with us and you're a part of us.
06:38Try to keep the germs to their own host.
06:43Well, any time you're on tour and a part of our show, we like to create Ohana.
06:46And, you know, with all the crazy stuff that's going on in the world, I like people to forget, you
06:51know, the outside world and really feel a part of something different.
06:54I want them to feel a part of our Ohana.
06:56And every one of you that are out there that come to our shows, we're Ohana forever.
07:00And I really appreciate the love and support for everybody coming on.
07:02That's why one of the big messages behind what we do is to bring everybody together and feel part of
07:08something that's greater than themselves.
07:10And we want to create that Ohana spirit.
07:11So thank you guys always for the love and support on the road.
07:14So as you all know, for the snack eaters, we've got the snack jar.
07:21Chips, seaweed, protein powder.
07:24I don't think you can call these protein bars.
07:28Not really, but some more chips.
07:30And, yeah, some of you out there that are snackers, we've got the snack jar for y'all.
07:35So right here, moving on, a little more back, we've got our climate control, which is very temperamental.
07:42And we love for all our hearts, so please bless us with staying nice and even-minded.
07:48Kind of like my guitar player.
07:50Very calm and even-minded.
07:53Of course, everybody's favorite spot, the bathroom.
07:56There is one rule on the road, and I'm sure you guys heard this before.
08:00And I'm going to say it straight.
08:01You cannot take a shit on the bus.
08:04Not on this bus, anyway.
08:08Come on back.
08:09We've got the bunk room.
08:10Thou shalt not shit.
08:11Yep, thou shalt not shit.
08:13Thou shalt not shit.
08:14Thou shalt not shit.
08:15We're here in the middle of the bus, the bunk room.
08:19We're blessed to have these super clean, nice bunks that they take care of so well.
08:26Well, these bunks are pretty special.
08:28There's only six bunks.
08:29A lot of buses have 12 bunks.
08:32These bunks turn into apartment-style bunks.
08:36You can make them bigger and smaller depending on how many people you got on the bus.
08:39So right now, we only got five of us on here.
08:43So four bunks are being used, stretched out.
08:46They got nice Tempur-Pedic mattresses for the boys.
08:50Air vents and all the good stuff for the boys to be comfortable.
08:54That's one thing I really like to stress on the road, especially when I'm on tour,
08:58is that everybody's comfortable, everybody's feeling good and healthy.
09:01Because a healthy, happy band jam's amazing.
09:04So I like to take care of the boys and get them as much rest as they can.
09:11So now that you guys have seen the rest of the bus, it's time to jump into my room.
09:15The master suite, which is just like I said, a master suite.
09:20I mean, big bed, big old queen-size bed, another bathroom.
09:27We have a shower in this room, which is used as a closet because we don't have as much space
09:35for everybody's stuff.
09:36So we like to put it in there.
09:38We use this makeshift closet, makeshift shower.
09:41You know, it doubles just in case it gets cold on the road.
09:45Any one of us need to wash off.
09:47We can jump in there and wash off.
09:48I got another refrigerator right here.
09:53Of course, you already know what time it is.
10:00Monster energy time, baby.
10:02Always.
10:03So I got some chicken in here.
10:06Chicken, sweet potatoes, and broccoli.
10:09I always hear, oh, it's so hard to eat clean on the road.
10:12I always gain weight on the road.
10:14Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
10:15It ain't hard when you make the choice to be conscious about what you eat.
10:20I got some organic raw cheese in here.
10:23Some guacamole, a bunch of waters, some sodas.
10:28A magic black bag that I'm sure all of you would like to look into.
10:32But it's like the black book.
10:34If you know, you know.
10:36I'll move on to a little closet here with my show clothes.
10:40Some of the stuff, some jackets, some of the boys, you know, hanging up some pants.
10:43Some heated jackets in here.
10:46Up here in the northern part of the country, it gets really cold.
10:48So I got some leathers and some aloha shirts to wear on stage.
10:52A little show clothes drawer.
10:54Check this drawer out.
10:54You're going to like this one.
10:57This is where I keep all of my supplements.
11:00Papaya enzymes.
11:01I got oregano oil.
11:03I mean, you name it.
11:04All the turmeric.
11:06CoQ10.
11:07Everything for the joints.
11:08Because, you know, at the end of the day, if the Eri Aikau Big Wave Surfing Championship goes off,
11:15I have to leave tour for a few days, fly back to Hawaii, win another big wave title, and then
11:22come back on tour.
11:22So I got to keep my health on point.
11:25I got to keep myself training and make sure that I'm conscious about that because those waves are really, really
11:30big.
11:30And I got to do what I got to do.
11:32So moving on back, I got one more TV here.
11:34Check this out.
11:35So there's four TVs all together.
11:36This one's pretty bright when it goes on.
11:40Some more watching live performances.
11:43I like to lay down at night and watch some of the greats do their thing because you want to
11:47study what the greatest ever did.
11:49And for me, I like to watch a lot of live performances, a lot of the great guys, how they
11:53get into it.
11:55Because sometimes for me, personally, it's not about what I see or hear.
11:58It's what I feel through their performances, that energy that they bring.
12:01I like to emulate that and make my own version of what some of the greatest ever did.
12:05So that's why I got it done surfing.
12:07And we're going to do that in music too.
12:10Pillows are very important to me.
12:15All nice, down, soft pillows.
12:19Of course, a few thick blankets because it gets cold.
12:23And back here, we got some more storage space, some remote, some more towels.
12:31And some more towels back here.
12:34You know how it is.
12:34Some of these venues, their towels are pretty skimpy.
12:38So I like to bring my own towels.
12:40I mean, pretty standard back here in the bathroom.
12:44This is my travel case.
12:50Keep my skin fresh.
12:53My teeth brushed.
12:55My body clean.
12:56And yeah.
12:58It's fairly straightforward.
13:01This bus, once upon a time, is a special bus.
13:04This bed actually folds up.
13:06You can set up a drum set and all of this stuff in here.
13:09We use it on our days off to record.
13:11We're actually in the process of finishing my first full-length album.
13:16And this bus was actually made by Travis Barker.
13:19And this room was actually made for the bed to go up.
13:22You can set up his drum set in here and jam and all that stuff.
13:25So mahalo brada, brada Travis out there for making such an awesome bus that we love and appreciate.
13:30And I want to say thank you to you guys for coming in and checking out Life on the Road
13:34with Makua.
13:35Aloha.
14:04Life on the Road with Makua.
14:07Life on the Road with Makua.
