00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02What do you got?
00:03I got a 1962 Corvette go-kart.
00:05I'm looking at $15,000 to do the whole thing.
00:08$15,000? God, it'd be like having a brand new car.
00:11I think Cynthia's got a thing for me, right?
00:13You don't remember these as a kid?
00:15See, I'm the wingman right here.
00:16You're a bad wingman.
00:19It's not run or right.
00:20Whenever I think I got one thing fixed,
00:22another problem pops up.
00:24Holy !
00:30I'm Rick Dale, and at my shop, we share a passion.
00:35To give new life to pieces from the past.
00:41Every project has its challenges,
00:44but there's no job we can't handle.
00:47This is American Restoration.
00:52Hey, Dad, come check this out.
00:55Awesome.
00:56What's up?
00:58Wow.
00:59Hey, I'm Rick.
01:00I'm Arnie.
01:01Arnie.
01:02Good to meet you.
01:02So what do you got?
01:03I got a 1962 Corvette go-kart.
01:06Pretty sweet, huh?
01:08I got it.
01:15This was a big deal.
01:16This was called a Corvette Junior or a mini Corvette
01:19made by the lawnmower company Yardman.
01:21It was a promotional item for Chevrolet.
01:24The marketing genius of what the dealership did
01:27was they would drive it to a nearby school,
01:30and they would tell all the kids,
01:31hey, check it out,
01:32and give them coupons for a free test drive of this.
01:36The parents come down to the dealership,
01:38the kid will get a test drive,
01:39but the parent's hopefully going to buy
01:41a brand-new 62 Corvette.
01:43Do you have a real one?
01:44Yeah.
01:44Here's some photos right there.
01:46Oh, wow.
01:46And this is your car?
01:48Yep.
01:48The reason I wanted to get this restored
01:50is to take the car show up in Montana, North Dakota.
01:52Drive around, look at other cars, and have a good time in it.
01:55You want a mini-me?
01:56A mini-me.
01:58If you get this to look like that,
01:59I'll be one happy camper.
02:01How fast do you want this to go?
02:03Uh, 25, 35 miles an hour.
02:05Legal and illegal.
02:06Okay.
02:07We'll take a look under the hood.
02:09That's pretty wild.
02:10Yeah, if you can get better suspension
02:12so it's more steerable.
02:14The way the steering's designed,
02:15it's very primitive is what you're getting at.
02:17Yeah, very primitive.
02:18This is like driving a lumber wagon.
02:21I got no idea.
02:22Used to have a motor in it, right?
02:23Yeah.
02:24The motor would sit here,
02:25and the belt would run through here.
02:27Brake system would lift up from here,
02:28and actually just rub on the back of the tire right here,
02:31and that's how you stop.
02:32How fast do you think this thing went?
02:33Between 8 to 11 miles an hour.
02:35However, if you're going to be driving this around
02:37at 35 miles an hour,
02:38I can't see this frame actually being able
02:41to accommodate everything you want to do.
02:43How much of this car do you want to see original?
02:47The fiberglass.
02:48Okay, so I see this body being badass on a go-kart.
02:53In fact, I have them that are electric starts.
02:55It's got brakes that'll slow you down.
02:56It's got a seat in it that I can cut down
02:58and make it look just like your Corvette seat.
03:00And you can also go like 25 to 35 miles an hour.
03:04And as far as the body goes,
03:06we'll strip all this pain and then redo it.
03:08You know, just get some new resin on it,
03:09and get it to look like your big Corvette in the picture.
03:12So to get this thing all done,
03:13where we do the body work on it,
03:14and to build you a chassis on the bottom of it,
03:17I'm looking at $15,000 to do the whole thing.
03:2115 grand?
03:22God, it'd be like having a brand new car.
03:25It's gonna be. It's gonna be.
03:26You're gonna see the Corvette on top,
03:28but you're gonna have Corvette performance on the bottom.
03:30Yeah.
03:31It's gonna be like driving a real Corvette, basically.
03:35Let's do it.
03:36All right.
03:37For this amount of money,
03:38this restoration better be as good as my full-size 1962 Corvette.
03:43It better do the job.
03:45This thing's gonna scare the pants right off you
03:46when I get done with it.
03:57Hello?
03:58Hey, Ron. It's Cynthia.
04:00Hey, Cynthia. How you doing?
04:01I have a really big load of stuff for you to check out.
04:04Can you come out and meet me?
04:05Definitely. I'll be right there.
04:06Cynthia's a great picker with awesome stuff.
04:09Whoa! What is that?
04:11And it doesn't hurt, but she's smoking hot.
04:14Hey, Pat.
04:15Do me a favor. Grab the tubular.
04:16Yes, sir.
04:19Holy Toledo.
04:20Hey, Cynthia.
04:21Hey, Ron. How are you?
04:22Good. How you been?
04:23Fine.
04:23Good seeing you as always.
04:25I have a big load to show you. Come on and look.
04:27Heck yeah.
04:29Are you getting us okay?
04:30What kind of knot is this? What kind of...
04:31You were in the Girl Scouts, weren't you?
04:33Brownies and Girl Scouts.
04:37Jeez.
04:39How'd you get this up here is the question I want to know.
04:41Here we go. Let's put the skirt on her.
04:43Put the skirt on her?
04:44Man, it's always about the skirt.
04:47Man, Cynthia, this is a...
04:48It's quite the little collection you got here.
04:50A national.
04:51This is an incredible pump.
04:53It is.
04:53Absolutely incredible pump.
04:54It's nice, all the chrome and all the accents there.
04:56Yes, absolutely.
04:57This is the 38.
04:59It's an A62.
05:00A62?
05:01See, that's what I mean.
05:02Love a woman that can tell me stuff.
05:04Oh, yeah.
05:04You know, has a lot of, you know, experience.
05:06It's a rare quality nowadays.
05:08I don't know what it is, but I think Cynthia's got a thing for me.
05:11Got your drug sign here.
05:12Yeah, let's talk about the signs.
05:13What year was this?
05:15I would think 40s.
05:16I'm going to say somewhere in there.
05:17You don't remember these as a kid?
05:19Just kidding.
05:20You were going to get...
05:21Don't be hiding behind me.
05:22I'm packing up.
05:23See, I'm...
05:24I'm the wingman right here.
05:25Let's do this.
05:26No, you're a bad wingman.
05:28Well, with Pat being there, it sort of interfered with my flirting with Ron.
05:32We flirt with each other every time we see each other.
05:35We talk a lot about pumps and stuff like that, and it just kind of comes with the territory,
05:39I guess.
05:40Now, this here, this is a Bowser.
05:41Bowsers are actually pretty plain Jane.
05:43It's kind of a simple-looking pump.
05:45They're hard to find.
05:46You just can't see this type of a model with the stainless.
05:49She definitely knows a lot about gas pumps.
05:51Yeah.
05:51A scary amount.
05:52One of the reasons I really, really like buying from her, and you know the second reason.
05:55Okay, Cynthia, here's the deal.
05:57I want these two pumps here, the pump there, plus dinner's on me, price for all the pumps.
06:03Oh, well, the dinner, that'll add $500 to the bill.
06:07Let me see here.
06:08I'm thinking about $5,300.
06:12I'm, $3,500 bucks is right where I was at.
06:15No, that's way too low.
06:17This stuff's hard to find.
06:18I could go as low as $4,100 for you guys.
06:21That's it?
06:22Your bottom line, $4,100?
06:23Yeah.
06:26It's a deal.
06:27All right.
06:28All right?
06:28Thanks.
06:28Very good.
06:29It's hard to do business with Ron because I always end up giving him the good-looking guy discount.
06:34Okay.
06:34How about dinner?
06:35What do you like to eat?
06:36Uh, lobster and shrimp.
06:37Heck yes!
06:39I got that in my player's card.
06:49Okay.
06:50You know, it's like this piece, I think goes this Mae West.
06:54Okay.
06:56What the hell?
06:57Check this out.
06:58Big horsey coming at you.
07:00Whoa, Nellie!
07:02How you doing?
07:02I'm Rick.
07:03Hi, Rick.
07:03I'm Chris.
07:04Chris, nice to meet you.
07:05So what do you got here?
07:06It's a coin-operated pony.
07:09Huh?
07:09And it needs some help.
07:10Have you ever seen this altogether?
07:12No, I haven't.
07:12It came in pieces.
07:13Just like this.
07:14Yeah.
07:14Well, let's put this horse together.
07:23It's my childhood dream come true, right?
07:26So you were a cowgirl, too?
07:27Yes.
07:30When we were going to our shoe shopping, there was one little pony outside the store.
07:34And my mom, every now and then, put that little dime in there.
07:37Boy.
07:38Big treat.
07:39Big treat for a little kid.
07:41It's bringing back my childhood memories.
07:43And you're going to ride it again.
07:43I'm going to ride it.
07:46This came out in 1952, you know, this particular model.
07:50Okay.
07:50And it was made by the Royal Engineering Company.
07:52And just like you remember as a kid, from the 50s onward, you saw these everywhere.
07:57Supermarkets, strip malls, restaurants.
07:59You don't see them much anymore because of safety concerns.
08:02But they're still a great piece of history.
08:05So what I want to know is how you see it done.
08:08I was hoping the saddle could look like a leather or even have a little leather dangles to it.
08:13That's cool.
08:14And what else are you thinking?
08:15I would love for you to have creative license with this.
08:19Well, if it was me, I would stick with the original brown and white colors.
08:23And then the bottom, I would want the bottom to sort of pop because it was red and black.
08:28It used to have the Royal Mustang painted and it had all that art on there.
08:32It's like a showpiece.
08:33Yeah, it's sitting up on this pedestal ready to be ridden.
08:35Come ride me.
08:36Come ride me.
08:37Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:39So how much are we looking at here to get her restored?
08:43Um, the horse itself is probably the biggest challenge to me with all this fiberglass,
08:49all the leather we want to do on it.
08:51The base of it probably got some pounding and little dents to deal with.
08:54All the wiring and stuff all has to be redone.
08:57To be able to get the whole thing all pretty, um, I'm looking at a, I'm looking at 6,500
09:03to restore the whole piece.
09:05Okay.
09:06You know, because it meant so much to me as a kid, I'm gonna do it.
09:10All right.
09:10Cool.
09:11Cool.
09:12Awesome, awesome.
09:12This would mean so much to me if he can get this pony in operational order.
09:17I'd love to see this horse in action.
09:19You will love this when it's done and, uh, I may take a ride myself.
09:23Okay.
09:26The problem is, you see how wide it is?
09:28If it doesn't fit, we're gonna be in big trouble.
09:30Too high.
09:31Whenever I think I got one thing fixed, another problem pops up.
09:35It's not running right.
09:54Awesome.
09:54You got it in?
09:55Yeah, Rick, you want it tore down, right?
09:56Yeah.
09:57We're restoring this Corvette go-kart.
09:59My idea is to basically take the old body and mount it on a brand new go-kart frame.
10:04So now I need to find out if the body's actually gonna accommodate this frame.
10:08Problem is, you see how wide it is?
10:10We're gonna have to cram this underneath that car and still make it look really cool.
10:15So this was your idea, not the customer's, or what?
10:18No, this was my idea.
10:19I knew it.
10:20We need the body.
10:21I mean, I couldn't help myself.
10:23I had to go all out on this one.
10:25So with this new chassis on this thing, this mini Corvette is gonna be a badass driving machine.
10:30Okay, so the chassis is way too short and way too wide.
10:36I guess I got in way over my head on this thing.
10:39Do you see where the rear axle is?
10:40It's almost in the middle of the car.
10:42Under the seat.
10:43Which sets the motor right here.
10:45We need the motor right there, and we still gotta be sitting in it.
10:48And let's see how we can lengthen the frame.
10:52All right, so we're gonna move this back to about here.
10:55And now we have our distance from the front wheel to the rear wheel, right?
10:59Yes.
11:00I spent a lot of money on this chassis, and if it doesn't fit and we can't make it work,
11:05we're gonna be in big trouble, bottom line.
11:07So let's take some measurements and get this thing to fabrication.
11:22We've lengthened the chassis so the engine will fit in the back where it's supposed to be.
11:26The problem is, it may be too big to fit into its rear.
11:31That's what she said.
11:33So now we gotta figure out the height.
11:36So the body sits on top and the trunk lid comes down.
11:40We can't go too high.
11:42Right.
11:43Or we can't go too low.
11:44Right.
11:48It's too high.
11:51Body off.
11:53You know, whenever I think I got one thing fixed, another problem pops up.
11:57I see the problem.
11:58This needs to come off.
12:00The motor mount?
12:01If you take this motor mount off, that'll set the motor way down.
12:04That's three inches.
12:06So we can just set a flat plate on there, right?
12:08Yeah, just put a piece of plate and then put the same bolts in there.
12:11Let's take this off.
12:12Then we'll at least see if it fits.
12:16And now what we gotta do is make sure that that fits on top.
12:21Right there.
12:22Okay.
12:23Are we hitting?
12:25Nope.
12:26Nice.
12:26Look at how clean that's gonna be.
12:29That looks good, right?
12:30Everything gonna mount on the motor still?
12:31Look at that.
12:33That's sweet.
12:34Damn, we're good.
12:35So when are you gonna start calling this place Tyler's Restorations?
12:38Dream on, little man.
12:40Yeah.
12:42Just like old times, buddy.
12:43Look at that.
12:46So we've cleaned and repainted all the mechanics of this Mustang wreck
12:50and installed a new motor.
12:55And Kyle's checking to see that all the pulleys and belts are turning correctly
12:58to make sure that this horse has plenty of giddy up.
13:12And since the client wanted a genuine leather saddle,
13:15we went to my friend Doc's Saddlery.
13:17He's using the same hides that would be used on a real saddle,
13:20complete with a horn, stirrups, and fenders.
13:23I want this to be as authentic as possible
13:25so the customer can saddle up and ride into the sunset.
13:31So, how's our little 62 Corvette updated go-kart doing?
13:35We're ready.
13:36Alright, so let's test it out.
13:38Just make sure it don't fly off the bench, alright?
13:42Warm it up a little bit.
13:51It's not running right.
13:52It sounds funny and there's a lot of smoke.
13:54Check the tailpipe.
13:56Oh, yeah, it's not burning all the gas and oil.
13:58It's too fat, meaning it's got too much gas and oil for the motor to run.
14:03Wow.
14:03You've got a great ear.
14:04All that gas and oil in the engine is going to gum up the works.
14:08And then it's going to constantly need service.
14:10So we don't want it to run fat.
14:11We want it to run leaner, which means less gas.
14:14And hopefully changing the carburetor settings is going to do the trick.
14:18Alright, let's switch the size of the carburetor jet.
14:21What does that say?
14:22160.
14:22So let's go 158.
14:24Ready to go?
14:25Ready.
14:28Look!
14:29No smoke!
14:34So we leaned it out.
14:36I mean, that's good.
14:37But we could be too lean now.
14:39So what I need to do now is test it.
14:41Do you want to run it?
14:41Sure.
14:44Take your shoes off.
14:46The thing about a car like this, you have to be able to feel the pedal.
14:50That's why when we race, we wear these little itty bitty shoes.
14:53You want to feel the car.
14:54Feel the car.
14:55Be there.
14:56Be the racer.
14:58Let's do it.
15:08Here's my first question to the driver.
15:10How did it feel?
15:11It doesn't go fast quick enough.
15:13You step on the pedal, it's like bleh.
15:15That's sort of the design of the motor and the gear.
15:19It can accelerate to top speed, but it can't do that right out of the gate.
15:23How did it run when you got going?
15:24I can't get going fast enough.
15:26Get out of there.
15:33This thing runs like a dream.
15:35The handling, the speed, the real test is going to be if it handles the same way with the body.
15:42Awesome.
15:54All right, Chris.
15:55Let's go find Rick for you.
15:57Okay.
15:59Rick.
15:59Hey.
16:00Chris is here to pick up the Mustang ride.
16:02Nice to see you, Chris.
16:03How you doing?
16:03It's good to see you, too.
16:04I'm just excited to pick it up.
16:05It's my dream come true, and I can't wait to see how it turned out.
16:08You're ready.
16:09I can tell.
16:09You're ready.
16:10See this thing?
16:12Okay, so here it is.
16:14You remember how it came in.
16:15I mean, the body itself, there was no paint on it.
16:18It was basically stripped down.
16:19It was a pile of horse manure.
16:22It was a dead horse.
16:23It was a dead horse.
16:24So, here we go.
16:26One, two, three.
16:29Woo!
16:29Yes!
16:36Here we go.
16:37One, two, three.
16:40Woo!
16:41Yes!
16:43What do you think?
16:44Did we nail it?
16:46I need some air.
16:48Wow, Rick.
16:49She doesn't look anything like she did.
16:52Oh, Rick.
16:53It's a dream come true.
16:55How did you get it to look this good?
16:58Oh, it wasn't easy.
16:59I mean, we'll just start with the horse.
17:01Okay.
17:03The horse itself, there's got to be 20, 30 hours of just body work, just on the horse alone.
17:11To be able to get it smooth like that again and get the paint job on it, Ted painted all
17:15the graphics on here,
17:16the brown and the eyeballs.
17:18On the saddle, we took this over to my friend, Dopp, who's a professional saddle maker.
17:23He actually built you a saddle on top of yours.
17:26I mean, it's done so nicely.
17:27All this leather.
17:28And this is the artwork that would have been on this particular ride back in the day.
17:32Ted did all of this.
17:33It's all hand painted.
17:34Hand painted.
17:35It's hand painted and then cleared over the top.
17:38Okay, Rick.
17:39The big question.
17:41Does she work?
17:42For a quarter, I guess we'll find out, right?
17:44All right.
17:44Yeah, just step up.
17:45Just like you would.
17:47There you go.
17:48Okay.
17:48Here's some quarters.
17:49There you go.
17:50Just hold on.
17:53Attention, kids.
17:54Please do not...
17:55Oh, my God!
17:58Where's my cowboy hat, right?
18:00This is great!
18:01Just...
18:01It's just...
18:02It's beautiful.
18:03It's beautiful.
18:04It more than exceeded anything I could have imagined.
18:23Wow.
18:24Nice.
18:24I'm stoked to show Arnie his mini Corvette.
18:27I just hope he likes it as much as he likes his big size Corvette.
18:30Looks good.
18:31Pretty excited here, Rick.
18:32Glad to see you again.
18:33You, too.
18:34Yes, yes.
18:35It's a beautiful car.
18:36The picture's doing no justice.
18:37Looks good.
18:38You ready to see this mini Corvette?
18:40I'm excited.
18:41I swear to God.
18:42So you remember how bad this mini Corvette was?
18:45I mean, the bodywork and everything on it?
18:47You remember the chassis?
18:48How it looked?
18:49And I told you it rode like a lumber wagon.
18:52You ready to see it?
18:53Let's do it, buddy.
18:54Here we go.
18:54Hey, Tyler!
18:56Yeah, man.
18:57Check it out.
19:00Holy .
19:01Look at it!
19:06You got goosebumps.
19:07Holy crap!
19:09It's beautiful!
19:10Give me a moment with me.
19:17Wow!
19:18It's beautiful.
19:20Is that the little mini me you wanted?
19:22I don't know which one to take them from.
19:25I'm thinking I got to show this to everybody in the world.
19:29Oh, holy .
19:30The outside of the car looks just like the car did back in the day.
19:34Just like the original paint over here?
19:36Yep.
19:37I tried to match it on the exact design of the car.
19:39And this is actually chrome paint.
19:40Very, very hard to do.
19:42So Ted got all the chrome on all the bumpers.
19:45When we took it apart, we went and found a go-kart frame.
19:48But his whole frame was way too wide.
19:50So we had to chop it and lengthen it out.
19:53But the motor was still too high.
19:55And Tyler came up with the idea of taking out the motor mount.
19:57And we ended up lowering it.
19:59The wheels and tires and everything on it are race tires.
20:02They stick to the ground.
20:02They got sort of slicks on them.
20:03Here, this is what the motor looks like.
20:06You see the motor?
20:06A little bit of engine.
20:07Holy crap.
20:08See how clean it is?
20:10Ooh, yes, yes.
20:11Where's the key?
20:12Let me take the first ride.
20:13Just jump in.
20:16Yeah, baby.
20:19Just like driving a real one.
20:21Yeah, baby.
20:22It's a choice.
20:24Driving this little mini Corvette is like your first helicopter ride.
20:27It's a feeling nobody knows except for yourself.
20:30Kite steering.
20:31Perfect.
20:32This is sweet.
20:34You look good in it.
20:35Yeah.
20:36So can I, yeah, can I take that for a little putt?
20:39All right behind you?
20:39See if you can keep up.
20:41Oh, okay.
20:42You know, the whole time Arnie's sitting there staring at this little Corvette.
20:45I'm staring at his big Corvette.
20:47I can't wait to try this thing out.
20:51Hit it.
21:02Yeah, baby.
21:03Driving next to Rick, looking over there like that.
21:06It's like big daddy, little daddy, mini me.
21:08It was nice.
21:09It was nice.
21:10It was good.
21:12I mean, I never seen two guys with bigger smiles on his face.
21:15I was smiling because here I'm in this really nice Corvette, and he was smiling because
21:19he's in this little mini Corvette, and he looked pretty darn happy.
21:22So it was a great day.
21:24All right.
21:25All right.
21:25All right.
