00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:03Oh man, look at that thing.
00:05It's a rockin' horse.
00:05I really want to restore it.
00:07And I was thinking something along the lines of Trigger.
00:10Oh, yeah.
00:10Roy Rogers.
00:12That's awesome.
00:13Holy smokes.
00:14This is like the pedal car graveyard.
00:16Bradley and I just found this amazing collection of pedal cars for sale.
00:20Five grand for all of it.
00:21I would be more right around four.
00:24No.
00:25No.
00:25One way or another, I'm gonna make this deal happen.
00:28Oh, wow.
00:29Check this out.
00:30Well, that looks like a Cushman.
00:32Look at this.
00:32Oh, man.
00:33Just have somebody drive me around.
00:37Look at a man's workbench.
00:39You see his passions.
00:42His work's in progress.
00:46The things that drive him crazy.
00:51Projects that...
00:52You get the point.
00:54Anyway, every workbench tells a story.
00:57And this is ours.
00:59American restoration.
01:07From time to time around the shop, we get deliveries of really big items just wrapped up in a tarp.
01:12Stick it off the truck.
01:13What do you want?
01:13I'm always dying to rip that cover off and see what's underneath.
01:17It's like unwrapping a present.
01:20Oh, wow.
01:22Check this out.
01:23It's bad.
01:24This thing is awesome.
01:27Wow.
01:27What is it?
01:28Well, that looks like a Cushman.
01:30You know what a Cushman is, right?
01:31No.
01:31This company actually started with two cousins in like the early 1900s.
01:35And then they started making these little motorcycles.
01:37And it was usually a utility bike.
01:40And then they got these contracts with the government.
01:42They sent thousands and thousands over in World War II.
01:46Cushman scooters were so popular with the U.S. military during World War II because they were so efficient and
01:52reliable.
01:53They even made a special version for the Army Airborne Troops that was dropped in by parachute on D-Day.
01:58But by the looks of it, this is definitely not your typical Cushman scooter.
02:03I mean, I've seen Cushmans before.
02:05It sort of looks like it might be a Cushman.
02:07But at the same time, it looks like there's a lot of homemade parts on it.
02:10Somebody's dolled it up.
02:11So I can see they got an electric box on there.
02:13I guarantee it didn't have that before.
02:15This tailpipe, this is actually a piece on top of a fence post that they've, you know, engineered on here.
02:20And quite honestly, it's killer.
02:22And I think somebody made this.
02:24See how this got pop rivets in it?
02:25Those look too new.
02:27But it's cool.
02:27This is pretty small.
02:29It's probably made for a kid or something.
02:30I could totally fit in it.
02:33Look at this.
02:34Odd bone.
02:35That's plenty of room.
02:36What would it cost to get this all thing restored?
02:38A project like this is probably going to cost us right around $7,500.
02:43All right.
02:44Okay, so I'm going to go give them a call.
02:46Don't let anybody touch it until I get back, all right?
02:48All right.
02:53Nana, you stay here.
02:55Oh, man.
02:55That was how much you could cook.
02:57Earlier, I got a lead on a lady that has a bunch of different pedal cars for sale.
03:01So we're on our way to check it out.
03:06It's got stuff everywhere.
03:07Look at this.
03:08No way.
03:09That's nice.
03:10Hey, how are you going?
03:10Good to see you again.
03:11How's it going, Bradley?
03:12Nice to meet you.
03:13Nice to meet you.
03:14There's lots of pedal cars to look at.
03:16I've got some great ones out back to show you too.
03:19Perfect.
03:19Perfect.
03:20There's a lot of cool, wild, unusual stuff.
03:22This is going to be good.
03:24Oh.
03:25What's that?
03:27Are you kidding me?
03:28This place is wicked.
03:30When I walked in, it was like pedal car heaven.
03:32I mean, they were up on the shelves.
03:33There was stuff in cases.
03:34Look at this.
03:35This is like the big boy to a pedal car.
03:37I know.
03:38That's got to fit probably four kids in it, man.
03:40That's pretty sweet.
03:41I've seen pedal cars before, but this lady has a ton of them.
03:44I mean, look at the boat one too.
03:46I love that.
03:47I need to find one with a side car so me and Nana could roll around.
03:50That'd be awesome.
03:51That'd be so awesome.
03:52If she has that much good stuff in this little space,
03:55I can't wait to see what she has outside.
03:59Oh my gosh.
04:01Holy smokes, dude.
04:02This is like the pedal car graveyard.
04:04It's got some good styles in there.
04:06The Bantam tractor.
04:07Got a Bantam tractor.
04:08These look like alien pedal cars.
04:11Yeah.
04:11Yeah.
04:11They're the X-15s.
04:13This is a gold mine.
04:15I know Rick can make these look incredible,
04:17and they'll sell like hotcakes.
04:19Holy crap.
04:20What?
04:20It's just a bigger pedal car.
04:22It's super interesting.
04:24Are you kidding me?
04:26I have never, ever seen a pedal car like this.
04:28We turn and we see like the ultimate pedal car.
04:31This thing is like the king of pedal cars.
04:33Dude, this thing is sweet.
04:36Yeah, but this thing's tore up too.
04:39That's all right, man.
04:40This is a must.
04:41Yeah?
04:41This is definitely something we got to ask about.
04:43All right.
04:43Find out what the deal is with it.
04:44Yeah.
04:46I think Rick's finally going to give me the credit I deserve.
04:50How's it going?
04:50What do you got?
04:51I got a challenge for you, Rick.
04:52Come over here.
04:53Let's get by.
04:53There's a table right over here.
04:55It's always funny when a customer comes into the shop
04:58and tells me they got a challenge for me.
05:00Because believe me, they're all a challenge.
05:03I'm excited.
05:04I'm usually the one unveiling this stuff, you know?
05:06Okay, you ready?
05:06Yeah, yeah.
05:07All right.
05:07Oh, man.
05:08Look at that thing.
05:10That is cool.
05:11This is all wood.
05:13What is that?
05:13It's a rockin' horse that was made for me when I was two years old.
05:16I want to try to pass it down to my kids.
05:19Oh, that's cool.
05:20So this is all handmade.
05:21This is all handmade.
05:22Who made it for you?
05:23And this was made by a gentleman where I used to live in California called Doc Miller.
05:28And him and his wife didn't have any children,
05:30so he just kind of adopted the kids in the neighborhood and made things for them.
05:34This kind of stuff doesn't come into the shop very often.
05:36You know, I get a lot of metal stuff, a lot of coin-op stuff.
05:39Very seldom do I get something actually handmade.
05:41Making a one-of-a-kind piece like this takes an awful lot of time and skill,
05:46so a whole lot of love went into this rocking horse.
05:49I've got some photos.
05:50Wow.
05:51That is cool.
05:53And you got that for your birthday at 2?
05:55At 2.
05:55That was a big deal, I bet.
05:57There was me at 2.
06:00That's awesome.
06:02I mean, that's incredible that you actually still have the pictures
06:04and you still have the horse.
06:06Right.
06:07I mean, that was something that really meant a lot to you.
06:09It did.
06:10Yeah.
06:11It's amazing.
06:11I saw that it had some ears, some kind of leather ears on it.
06:14The pictures.
06:15And it was so real.
06:16It was so lifelike.
06:18And he actually used horse hair.
06:20Yeah.
06:21Father-in-law painted over the original colors.
06:23Right.
06:23But he painted over it?
06:25Over the original colors.
06:25Okay, then we might find it as we go.
06:27You might.
06:28Yeah.
06:28I was thinking if maybe something along the lines of Trigger.
06:32Oh, yeah.
06:32From Roy Rogers.
06:33From Roy Rogers.
06:34Right.
06:34Roy Rogers and his trusty horse Trigger were big stars from the 30s all the way into the
06:3950s.
06:40And generations of kids followed their adventures on TV.
06:44And Trigger was sort of a chestnut color, right?
06:46Chestnut.
06:47The head in here was a little white.
06:48And then the tail was the same color.
06:49It was more of a white, too.
06:51We'll keep the Trigger theme with the paint job on it and the design of the horse, period.
06:56It sounds great to me, but what are we talking?
07:00Everything there, I'm looking at 2,500 to do the whole horse.
07:04Let's do it.
07:04All right.
07:05Awesome.
07:05Awesome.
07:06Thanks.
07:07Thank you very much.
07:08Let's go inside the office.
07:09We'll take care of some paperwork and we'll get that started.
07:11All right.
07:11Okay.
07:12This horse is 63 years old.
07:14I'm just hoping we can get it back together again.
07:18Everything there, five grand.
07:21I got to call Rick so I don't make a mistake with money.
07:24You need to make sure that we got some sales for sure before we buy that package.
07:28I can't believe Rick's being so cautious.
07:31One way or another, I'm going to make this deal happen.
07:33Hey, Rick.
07:34I'm Darius.
07:35Darius.
07:35Good to meet you.
07:36I sent the Cushman scooter out to you.
07:38Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:39My excitement is to see it brought back to life like a Phoenix rising through the ashes.
07:44There it is.
07:50Bradley and I just found this amazing collection of pedal cars for sale.
07:54If I can buy all of them and at the right price, I'll be the man.
07:58Do you know much about this one?
08:00That's called the Austin J40.
08:02They had battery operated horns and lights and they could be motorized.
08:08We love this one.
08:10This car right here.
08:11We love it.
08:12All right.
08:12So now tell me how you work it.
08:14Do you do just individual sales?
08:16We do all of these as a package for us.
08:18So for this one alone, $1,500.
08:21Everything there, $5,000 for all of it.
08:25It's just over $200 a piece.
08:27I would be right around probably $125 a piece.
08:33There's some I could let go for that, but you're not going to get the cream of the crop.
08:37I would want them all.
08:38I mean, bottom line, I'd want them all.
08:39So I would definitely have to call Rick.
08:41Okay.
08:42Make sure that it's all right.
08:43You guys make your call.
08:44You know where to find me when you're ready.
08:46On a package deal like this, especially for pedal cars, which I don't normally buy a bunch of, I got
08:51to call Rick.
08:52So I don't make a mistake with money.
08:56Hello, this is Rick.
08:57Hey.
08:58Hey, I got good news.
09:00She's got a lot of pedal cars up here.
09:01I mean, a ton of them.
09:02Okay.
09:03All right.
09:03So here's the deal.
09:04I counted 22 cars.
09:06She'll let us have that whole package for $5,000.
09:09Then she's got another really, really unusual pedal car, Austin J40.
09:18Okay.
09:18They're complete and everything.
09:19They're worth quite a bit of money.
09:20Okay.
09:21I don't know.
09:22I mean, can we sell those?
09:25I knew you were going to ask me that.
09:27No, I would have to go to work without a doubt.
09:29Okay.
09:30Well, here's the deal.
09:31You need to make sure that we have some sales for sure before we buy that package.
09:35All right, brother.
09:36Thanks, man.
09:36Bye.
09:37Before I close this deal with Glenna, Rick wants to make sure that I have some buyers lined up so
09:42I don't waste his money.
09:44Here's the deal.
09:44Would it be okay if I took a day, maybe two to do some research?
09:47Didn't give you a shout back?
09:49Sounds good.
09:50Okay.
09:50Thank you very, very much.
09:52So I'm going to go back, try to line up some buyers, and come back and close the deal with
09:55Glenna.
09:59We're restoring a Cushman scooter that a customer sent to us, and I just got off the phone with the
10:03owner.
10:04All right.
10:04He wants us to trick this bike out, but he also wants to know exactly what this thing is.
10:09So I've asked my friend Danny, the best bike guy I know, to come in and see if he can
10:14figure out what's what.
10:15Hey!
10:16How you doing, buddy?
10:17Good to see you.
10:18Good to see you.
10:19I specialize in hot rods and motorcycles and basically anything with an engine, and Rick had a question about this
10:26scooter.
10:27Here it is.
10:28Look at this thing.
10:29Wow.
10:30All right.
10:31We got pieces.
10:32I thought it was coming down to look at a scooter, but there were parts just all over the room.
10:37So you kind of got to puzzle it together in your head.
10:39So it's probably a 721.
10:41Okay.
10:42They made the 721 from 1958 to 1964.
10:45Okay.
10:45So it's got to be late 50s, early 60s.
10:49Absolutely.
10:50This guy must have had a couple of these.
10:52Okay.
10:52And he one day said, hey, I'm going to rub this part up here, rub this part up here.
10:57This fits.
10:58You know, different years.
10:58He just sort of mixed up together.
11:00Sure.
11:00He has different fenders.
11:01I don't know if they're off of, you know, Cushman.
11:04That's original.
11:06And that's original.
11:07Okay.
11:07And then this fender.
11:08And that fender and this piece down here is.
11:10Okay.
11:11This is actually a side fender.
11:13I mean, it was on the side of that sidecar.
11:15I know that for sure was handmade, right?
11:17I do believe that you're right.
11:19This gentleman must have made this.
11:20Yeah.
11:20It was totally.
11:21It was handmade.
11:22It's very cool.
11:23It's great.
11:23The guy went all out.
11:24I like the fact that he's not restoring it 100% original because I'm a custom guy.
11:29I love to customize things.
11:30And I like the fact that Rick has taken this and he's adding a little flavor to it.
11:34I can't wait to see this thing when it's done.
11:36It's going to be beautiful.
11:37Typical Rick Dale.
11:41We're restoring an old, one-of-a-kind rocking horse.
11:44There's a lot of stuff we can't do to this wooden horse at the shop.
11:47So I came down to Doc Saddlery to try to get a saddle, a mane, and a tail made for
11:51it.
11:51We had a customer bring this in and they want something like this for the saddle and then the tail
11:56and the mane.
11:56But he wants it to look like Trigger.
11:58And what was that from?
11:59Do you know?
12:00Roy Rogers.
12:02The customer was really adamant about the horse looking like Trigger.
12:07So I came here to pretty much ask Doc what Trigger looks like because I don't know.
12:12Roy Rogers was a king of the cowboys.
12:14Right before your attack.
12:15I know, right?
12:16Trigger is a Palomino, so this would be all yellow.
12:19Okay, this is nice.
12:21And then the saddle would be brown.
12:23Yeah, that'd look good.
12:25And then what about cost?
12:27I'm going to miss a small saddle.
12:29Yeah, a good real saddle is going to be about $3,500.
12:35Holy.
12:36This is a lot different for a rocking horse than a real horse.
12:40With the horse hair, the saddle, and all the appointments, you're probably going to be looking somewhere around $200.
12:47Wow.
12:48All right, well, I'm glad this is a $200 saddle.
12:50Thanks a lot, Doc.
12:51All right, buddy.
12:52Yeah, cool.
12:52This will definitely look good.
12:54Yeah.
12:54You have a good day now.
12:55You too.
12:56I have restored several small rocking horses, and it'll be a fun thing for everybody.
13:06Okay, I'll fire over the pictures, and for all I know, you know, something will spark your interest.
13:11Pedal cars are extremely collectible.
13:13The trouble is finding the right buyer that's willing to buck up.
13:16I've been calling around to potential customers trying to get some sales, and it's been a real challenge.
13:21What are you working on?
13:22Pedal cars, man.
13:23Pedal cars, all right?
13:24Wow.
13:24And I definitely got a nibble on one.
13:27All right.
13:27Yeah, you know, I don't want 20 pedal cars just sitting in here that we purchased and we're waiting to
13:32get paid for.
13:33Do not purchase them until you make those sales.
13:36Dude, I don't want to lose these, though.
13:37I mean, this is a great deal.
13:38I know.
13:39But you've got to push that sale, okay?
13:41Okay.
13:46We've been restoring a wooden rocking horse for a customer, and I can't wait for him to see how it
13:51came out.
13:51Just looking at it makes me want to sing Happy Trails, so I think we nailed it.
13:56You got something for me?
13:57Yeah, you were here for the horse.
13:58I'm ready.
13:59I'm waiting to see this thing.
14:01All right, come on over here.
14:02Okay.
14:02This horse was made for me in 1948, and it's a one-of-a-kind.
14:06I know my horse was in pretty bad shape, and I'm really excited to see what he's done with it.
14:12All right, here it is.
14:13You ready?
14:13Oh, I'm ready, right?
14:14All right.
14:14I want you to remember it as a kid where you're sitting in front of the TV and you're riding
14:17it, you know?
14:18So I want you to remember way back then, way back, all the way back to two years old.
14:22Oh, I'm getting goosebumps already.
14:23All right, one, two, three.
14:25Oh, my God.
14:27Holy cow.
14:28What do you think?
14:29Oh, that is awesome.
14:31I was just blown away.
14:33I could not believe he managed to get that thing to looking like it used to.
14:37It brings back the days of that old black-and-white television.
14:40Roy Rogers, the Lone Ranger, Gene Autry shows, sitting there and riding.
14:45Yeah.
14:45It just makes me wish that I was about this high again so I could get on here and just
14:50take off into the sunset.
14:53How did you get all those cracks filled in and everything?
14:55Yeah, well, what happened was we sanded it all down and then we put wood filler in there.
15:00We stuffed, you know, really deep inside there and made sure that it cured, sanded it quite a few more
15:05times.
15:05And then we shot like five coats of color on there and then we put about five coats of clear
15:09on there over top of everything.
15:11There's a lot of work done on that in order to get that looking like that.
15:13Just unbelievable.
15:15Unbelievable.
15:16I think Roy Rogers would even like this horse.
15:19Yeah, thanks.
15:19Thanks.
15:20Yeah, and the tail hair is pretty cool.
15:22I mean, that's real hair.
15:23That is awesome.
15:23That's awesome.
15:24Same color as Trigger's hair.
15:26Right.
15:27One of the things that I think is really extraordinary on this piece was this saddle.
15:30I was expecting nothing like this when I got it back.
15:34Tyler went and he found somebody that does leather upholstery named Doc also.
15:38The guy went all out on this saddle.
15:41I mean, he actually did a stirrup on there.
15:42Look at the studs coming around it and all the studs.
15:44I mean, the guy did a phenomenal job.
15:46I can tell that this is really some serious artisanship work that's been put into this.
15:51Yeah.
15:51With the leather work, the saddle, the rings, it looks just exactly like Trigger to me.
15:56It just blows me completely away.
15:57So, what do you think?
15:59You like it?
15:59Oh, Rick, this is just beyond anything I expected.
16:04I know my daughter's going to be thrilled with it and my grandkids are going to have a great time
16:07riding this thing.
16:08Yeah.
16:09Having an opportunity to work on something that somebody only made one of.
16:13It was a huge deal for us, a huge honor anyways.
16:17And then to bring it back to life and then show it to you was very cool.
16:20Thank you for bringing it in.
16:21Thanks, thanks.
16:22Everything worked out good then.
16:23Oh, excellent.
16:24I don't know if I want to give this up now or not.
16:26All right.
16:27Let's go in the office and we'll take some of your money.
16:29Okay.
16:29And then you can ride off into the sunset.
16:31All right.
16:31Sounds good to me.
16:32All right.
16:33When it comes to one-of-a-kind items that are part of the family, there's just no price you
16:38can put on it.
16:40What's the most common reason for a car motor to seize?
16:44A. No oil.
16:46B. Using the wrong type of fuel.
16:49C. Water in the engine.
16:52Find out next.
16:56What's the most common reason for a car motor to seize?
17:00The answer is A. No oil.
17:03Without oil, you get too much heat and everything inside is going to seize.
17:08That's a huge thing when it comes down to motors.
17:11You got to make sure there's oil in the motor.
17:13Otherwise, in the future, it's not going to last.
17:17We've been restoring a Cushman scooter that a customer sent us.
17:20He actually made the trip out here to see how it came out.
17:24Hi, I'm Rick.
17:25Hey, Rick. I'm Darius.
17:26Darius, good to meet you.
17:27I came to Rick's today to pick up my Cushman Highlander scooter with a sidecar.
17:31When I first saw this thing on the side of the road, it needed a lot of work.
17:34But my excitement is to see it resuscitated and brought back to life like a phoenix rising from the ashes.
17:42Well, I mean, the biggest thing is that it was a hodgepodge of parts.
17:45Cushman here, Cushman there, different years.
17:47And then it had a sidecar and it was sort of wild.
17:50I just want to make sure you understood how bad that was.
17:52The last time we talked, I just basically said, how'd you want it to look?
17:56You know, and you said, do some magic.
17:59This is what I want to do since you haven't seen any of it.
18:01I'm going to let these two guys go and get it.
18:03And then I'm going to wait right here and I want to see your face.
18:05I want to see how you look.
18:06I want to see how you react.
18:08Don't get this bad boy.
18:09All right.
18:09One of the most rewarding aspects of the restoration business is seeing the joy and happiness in the customer's face
18:15after we bring these projects back to life.
18:19There it is.
18:25I can't believe this is the same thing.
18:28We love it, Nick.
18:30Check it out.
18:31You've gone to a new level, Rick.
18:33Wow.
18:34When Rick revealed my scooter to me, I was blown away.
18:38He exceeded my expectations.
18:40I would have been happy if he met them.
18:41He exceeded them.
18:43Tell me what you did to it.
18:44What didn't I touch on this thing?
18:46We got to hot-ride it, so we gave the bike itself, the Cushman itself, the exact Cushman look.
18:51When I went over the sidecar, we gave the sidecar more of a hot-rod look with the flames.
18:56I would have never chosen this combination, which is why I'm so happy I gave you Creative Control, because it
19:02just looks amazing.
19:03All this was all sheet metal bent over.
19:05It had rivets all through here that all got welded all up, all fixed and everything, so it's all one
19:10piece now.
19:11Amazing.
19:12Remember the insides of this was just a big, yeah.
19:14So we went to put the tuck and roll inside here.
19:17The handlebars.
19:18We did all the chrome, right?
19:20The handlebars were all welded.
19:21Mm-hmm.
19:21It was all messed up, so we went and ground those all out, made this look like handlebars again.
19:25When I spoke to Rick, I didn't tell him what I wanted, because I didn't know.
19:29I told him what I didn't want, and when I saw him for the first time, he nailed it.
19:33He knew what I wanted, and he did it, and he did it right.
19:37You like it?
19:37This experience has just been tremendous, and to walk away with this, I couldn't be happier.
19:44Thanks again.
19:45You bet.
19:47Let's go in the office.
19:48We'll take care of the paperwork.
19:50You can figure out how we're going to send that home.
19:52I'll drive it.
19:58So I'm headed out to buy these pedal cars.
20:00It's such a good deal.
20:02It's a great price for a lot of pedal cars that we need.
20:06Hey.
20:07Hey.
20:08Yeah.
20:08Where are you going?
20:10Go get some pedal cars, man.
20:12You sold them all?
20:14Well, I got leads, but, dude, I have to make this deal.
20:17We have to get these things.
20:19It's a smoking deal for all these, and if we just let it sit there, somebody else is going
20:23to get them.
20:24We don't want that.
20:25Pedal cars are a great deal, but at the same time, they're going to get them.
20:30They're not going to make us money quick.
20:32I totally understand that Ron thinks that this is a great deal, but until he shows me
20:37that he has some of them sold, he is not going to make this deal.
20:41But they're going to make us more money if they're here in our hands, ready to go,
20:46than if I don't have them at all.
20:47Sell a couple of them, then we can go.
20:50Rick, all of a sudden, it's become from this awesome go buy everything, sell everything
20:54to just a tight wad.
20:56You're going to lose out on them.
20:58And then what I'm going to do is somebody else makes money and not you.
21:01I'm not going to call him brother anymore.
21:03I'm going to call him buzzkill brother, because he just ruins my day sometimes.
21:07So, if you haven't come yourself, two or three daysers are going to give me a 100 minutes,
21:07just kidding to this time.
