00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02I came down here today with my 1939 outboard Evinrude motor.
00:06So you're going to restore it for your dad?
00:07Unfortunately, my dad passed away last month.
00:10Hopefully, the people that knew my dad
00:11will be able to see this motor back in working condition.
00:14Here we go.
00:18Prove to me how obedient she is.
00:20It gets dangerous around here,
00:22and the last thing that I want to happen is for her to get hurt.
00:25Come on.
00:26Come on, man. We got work to do.
00:27I came down to purchase a coffee grinder.
00:30We're looking at $6,500.
00:32I was looking at maybe half that.
00:33The thing is, is there's two.
00:34I was a little bit taken aback.
00:36Remember back in the day when things were made by hand
00:39and people took pride in their work?
00:42My name's Rick Dale, and I bring these things back to life.
00:46Every restoration has its own set of challenges.
00:50There's no owner's manual for what we do,
00:53but there's no job we can't handle.
00:57Hey, can I call you back?
01:07I got a customer who just drove up.
01:10Hey, I'm JC.
01:12JC, good to meet you.
01:12Nice to meet you.
01:13This outboard motor has been in our family for around 60 years.
01:17It's called an El-Tow Pal.
01:18El-Tow stood for Evinrude Light Twin Outboard.
01:21These were just put on little small fishing boats,
01:24and the owner of the company, Evinrude,
01:26for 20 years, he produced outboard motors.
01:29Right.
01:29In 1917, the first slogan was,
01:32throw away your oars.
01:33Now we got motors.
01:35Anyone who grew up near water remembers fishing as a kid,
01:39which makes vintage motors like this collectible.
01:42Where'd you get it?
01:43My grandfather had a little repair shop,
01:45and he fixed a washing machine for a neighbor,
01:48and the neighbor couldn't afford to pay him,
01:50so he offered this motor as payment.
01:53So this hung on his wall for quite a few years,
01:56and just recently I told my dad I want to get it restored.
01:59So you're going to restore it for your dad?
02:01Well, actually, I was going to.
02:02Unfortunately, my dad passed away last month.
02:05I really want to do this,
02:07and I want to see it come back to life.
02:09I want to see it running.
02:10This is an option that you could purchase,
02:12that you could store the motor in it.
02:14I think there was a place for a tackle box.
02:16I thought that that would be a cool way of displaying it.
02:18I'm going to have to check into that.
02:19I may be able to find one.
02:20If not, then I'll make one.
02:22That'd be great.
02:23All right, so how are you seeing this restored?
02:26It sounds like it's sort of a showpiece.
02:28I'd like to mount it and put it up for years to come,
02:31but I would like to see it run at least one time.
02:33Right.
02:34This looks like it's been chipped.
02:35It has.
02:36That's the piece that's broke off.
02:37That's bad.
02:39That's the rudder.
02:40It takes the water by it, and it turns you.
02:42So that's a big deal.
02:43We're going to have to find another piece of material like this,
02:46and then when we polish, we'll polish that out,
02:48so you won't even tell.
02:50Okay, Rick, I know it needs a lot of tender love and care.
02:52What are you thinking about the cost to restore it?
02:55Well, there's a lot of hand polishing on this, a lot.
03:00And, you know, getting the dent out and painting the tank.
03:03We're running right between $1,500 and $1,800 to do the whole thing.
03:07This thing is part of my family history,
03:10so you can't put a price on that.
03:11I think we have a deal.
03:13All right.
03:13Thank you very much.
03:14Thank you, Rick.
03:14Appreciate it.
03:15Let's go in the office and take care of some paperwork.
03:17All right.
03:18Let's start it.
03:18I'm really excited about seeing it when it's restored.
03:21Hopefully, the people that knew my grandfather and my dad
03:24will be able to see this motor back in working condition.
03:27Here we go.
03:31Nice.
03:33Kick it down.
03:34Down.
03:35Hey, Bradley.
03:36What's up?
03:37You know, I've been noticing Nana around the shop a lot lately.
03:40And you remember what I said, you know, my rule, you know, about the trainer.
03:44Did you train her?
03:45Yeah, kind of.
03:46I mean, I didn't go and take her to a trainer.
03:49I mean, I've been doing it myself.
03:50I mean, every day she's been with me, and we run all over town, you know.
03:54She's right there in the passenger seat.
03:56Bradley's had Nana for a while now, and part of the deal was that if she's going to be here
04:00at the shop, that he needs to properly train her.
04:02I mean, it gets dangerous around here, and the last thing that I want to happen is for
04:06her to get hurt.
04:07All right, Bradley, what I really need you to do is prove to me how obedient and well-trained
04:12she is, okay?
04:13We're worried that Nana's going to get hurt around the shop, and I'm starting to get
04:16a little nervous, because Nana gets stubborn sometimes, so hopefully this works out.
04:21All right.
04:22See you in a bit.
04:23All right.
04:25Come on, Nana.
04:26We got work to do.
04:30Hey, Rick.
04:38Hi.
04:39How are you?
04:39Roger.
04:40Roger.
04:41Good to meet you.
04:42A little while ago, Ron and Tyler found an antique coffee grinder on a pick.
04:46I think I found a buyer, so he's come by to check it out.
04:49Here it is, right here.
04:51Oh, wow.
04:52Man, that is a lot bigger than I imagined.
04:54I work with a coffee company, and we wanted something that would go on a reception area.
04:59What do you think?
05:00It's huge, Rick.
05:01Yeah, it is big.
05:02It's a Star Mill, which is like 1800s brand, but it would be used in stores.
05:07You would come in, and you'd get your coffee, and you'd grind it, or they would grind it
05:10for you.
05:11That's about where this would have been of this size.
05:13You look like you do something with coffee anyways, right?
05:15You sell coffee?
05:16Yeah, I do the communications and marketing for American Star Coffee Company, and it's
05:21going to be the centerpiece of the company in our headquarters.
05:23Are you looking to use this, or is it just display?
05:26It's both.
05:27If we can make it work, that would be fantastic.
05:29And I like the fact that it's got a star on it, because our company's American Star.
05:34I like that.
05:35There's a customer for everything.
05:37Part of my job is finding the right buyers for our projects.
05:41I hope Roger agrees with my quote, because I think this is exactly what he's looking for.
05:46You want this restored, right?
05:48I do.
05:48Do you think you can get it working?
05:50It does have some issues.
05:51I mean, I'm seeing cracks.
05:52You know, it's cast iron.
05:53And cast is hard to weld.
05:54You've got to heat it up at the same time you're TIG welding it.
05:56Inside this, we'll blast it and clean it out.
05:59It's important to leave it that real raw steel inside there.
06:01So when it comes through, does this grinding, and what drops in the bottom, it's got nice, clean coffee.
06:06My biggest challenge, for sure, is going to be getting something that originally went right here.
06:12This was the unit that actually held all the coffee.
06:15Is the burgundy the color of the company?
06:17You got burgundy in your colors?
06:19Burgundy and gold.
06:19Okay.
06:20So what I'd like to do to this thing, I'll take a look at your logo, and we'll try to match some of that,
06:23give this a little character of that.
06:25So when you walk in, it looks like this thing was for American Star coffee.
06:28It's going to be wow.
06:30Fantastic.
06:30What would it cost to have something like this redone?
06:34Probably $6,500 for the whole piece.
06:40The thing is, is there's two things.
06:41I was looking at maybe half that.
06:44My estimates are based on man hours and the cost of supplies.
06:47People don't realize that this stuff takes a lot of time, and that costs money.
06:52It looks simple like it is right now.
06:54There's a lot more to it, and I know there's that much work into it.
06:57I know there is.
06:58$6,500.
07:01$6,500.
07:01Yeah.
07:06Let's do it.
07:07Do it.
07:08Fantastic.
07:08You bet.
07:09Come on in here.
07:10When Rick told me that it was going to be $6,500, I was a little bit shocked.
07:14But to see a piece in this condition and the size of it, I was overwhelmed.
07:19Let's get this thing done before lunch.
07:27I'm starving.
07:29I usually like to get started on items as soon as we get them.
07:32But this one's been sitting around since Ron and Tyler picked it because we didn't have
07:35a customer.
07:36But now that it does, I have Brett Lee and Kyle tearing it down.
07:41Nope.
07:43There's no way.
07:44This wheel is a real pain in the a**.
07:46Normally, we do one of three things to something that's this rusty.
07:49Hammer it, heat it up, or hit it with penetrating oil.
07:56It's your a**.
07:57Yeah, right.
07:58He's lifting me off the ground.
08:00It's the hardest I've seen anything stuck on there, I think.
08:03I just got to make sure she doesn't get into any unsafe areas.
08:07Stuff like that.
08:09Nana!
08:11Nana!
08:11Hey, I'm going to need that.
08:13It's important to test seams like this before using them to store fuel.
08:17We're going to put a Coke in the gas tank?
08:19How you doing?
08:20I came here today to pick up a coffee grinder that would actually grind coffee.
08:25Okay, you ready?
08:28Needs a little lube.
08:37We got two major projects moving down the line.
08:40An Evernood motor that we're restoring in memory of a customer's father.
08:44And this coffee grinder that a customer came in and bought from us.
08:47Kyle and Bradley weren't able to remove the hub from one of the wheels.
08:51So John's removing it with press.
08:55While Dave and John get everything just right,
08:58it's Tyler's responsibility as foreman to make sure we have all the parts for this project.
09:02We're doing an 1890s coffee grinder and we're looking for where we put the beans in
09:07and then they flow into the grinder.
09:09You're not going to have anything like that?
09:12All right, thanks anyways.
09:14Bye-bye.
09:15The coffee grinder is missing the part that holds the beans before they're ground.
09:19So I'm calling around to see if I can find one locally while the guys work on the rest of it.
09:23Oh, so you might have one.
09:24I mean, because I've been trying all sorts of places and they were saying they didn't have any,
09:27couldn't find any.
09:28Awesome.
09:29I'll be right there.
09:30Thanks a lot.
09:30Yep.
09:31Bye-bye.
09:33Ron!
09:43This Evan Rude motor has years of caked-on crud.
09:46So Cowboy is going to give it a chemical bath to prep it for a rebuild.
09:50Meanwhile, I got Dave splitting apart the gas tank.
09:53The inside of this tank is rusted.
09:55So Phil's going to start by blasting it and then he can pound out the dents.
10:06This is the place.
10:07All right.
10:08You feeling lucky?
10:09I'm feeling lucky that we got a parking spot.
10:12Rick has had Tyler and I searching all over the place for this coffee urn.
10:16Tyler got this lead down at VCA, so we're going to see if it's down there.
10:19How you doing?
10:20Hey.
10:20How are you?
10:20Tyler.
10:21Nice to see you, Tyler.
10:22I'm Ron.
10:23Hi, Ron.
10:23How are you?
10:23Good.
10:24How are you doing?
10:24So what can I help you with today?
10:25We have an 1800s coffee grinder that we're restoring and everything was there and it was complete
10:30except the urn or the hopper.
10:32Sometimes we have some parts like that, so we can go up back and take a look.
10:35Cool.
10:36Awesome.
10:37This coffee urn is extremely rare.
10:39Tyler thinks he finally found it.
10:40Hopefully this is a quick in and out, get it and go.
10:43Is this warehouse, is it as big as the auction floor itself?
10:45No, it isn't, but it's piled from floor to ceiling.
10:48Whoa.
10:49Here it is.
10:50Awesome.
10:51Great.
10:51Thanks a lot.
10:52When we first got here and I saw all the stuff this guy had, I had faith we were going
10:56to find what we needed.
10:58Oh, T.
10:59What?
11:00Listen, I know we're here for this coffee grinder thing, but come on.
11:05This thing's ridiculous.
11:06What are you going to do with that?
11:07It's a laser strip game.
11:09It's like cards.
11:10It is.
11:10It's strip poker.
11:11This right here is where you see your hand.
11:14Of course, they made the big screen for where the ladies are.
11:18And as you win, off come the clothes.
11:22Dude, this has endless possibilities.
11:23Oh, my gosh.
11:24It's in good shape, too.
11:26Focus.
11:26Remember why we're here.
11:27We're here for this coffee grinder thing.
11:29A strip poker machine?
11:30Oh, that's going home with me someday without a doubt.
11:34It's starting to seem like it's not going to be in here.
11:36Keep going.
11:36Don't get discouraged, all right?
11:37You just never know.
11:39Hey, dude, see that thing at the very top?
11:41Yeah.
11:42Is this that what we're looking for?
11:43I don't know.
11:44Climb up there and find out.
11:47You're my spotter, right?
11:51It's a lamp.
11:52Oh, dude.
11:53Right there.
11:54Did you find it?
11:54Right there.
11:55What?
11:55Marilyn Monroe neon.
11:55Dude, that is not what we need.
11:57Marilyn Monroe neon.
11:58Get down here.
12:00We didn't find it.
12:01Just let's go.
12:03Finding this coffee grinder piece has been a lot harder than any of us
12:06imagined.
12:07So, hopefully, my dad has a plan B.
12:09Is there a way we can fabricate one?
12:11I don't know.
12:21Hey, Dave.
12:22The Evinrude gas tank is welded and primed.
12:25But before we give it a custom paint job, I want to make sure that it doesn't leak.
12:29This looks pretty good.
12:30You popped this and welded it all back together?
12:32Yes, sir.
12:33Did you guys test it, though?
12:34I shoved some air into it.
12:35Okay.
12:36But I didn't feel like it was losing any pressure.
12:37I'm worried that it's going to hold fuel.
12:39You know, you're going to get a nice paint job on it, and then the fuel comes out.
12:42It's just going to rip it up.
12:43Even though the tank looks completely sealed to the naked eye, moisture can still get through
12:48the cracks.
12:48So, it's important to test seams like this before using them to store fuel.
12:53Hey, I'm going to need that.
12:55You know what I want to do?
12:56We're going to go ahead and pour that in there.
12:57You're going to put a Coke in the gas tank?
12:59Yeah.
12:59I'm thinking that it'll, you know, we'll do a little bubbling out here.
13:02At the same time, we'll see it, and it won't ruin the inside.
13:04You know, it's not water, so it won't rust anything out in there, and then we won't have
13:08any impurities in there.
13:09That'll pour right out.
13:10Sometimes, we'll find unconventional uses for everyday products.
13:15The color of the Coke will show through any holes or cracks in the welded seams, no matter
13:20how small they are.
13:21Oh, yeah.
13:22We're over half.
13:23I don't see anything.
13:24I think we're good.
13:26That's great.
13:33Down.
13:35All the way.
13:36Come on.
13:37All the way down.
13:37Okay, I'm here for the audition.
13:40I want to see how trained she is.
13:42Earlier, I told Brelli that by the end of the day, he had to prove to me that Nana was
13:47properly trained, and now is the moment of truth.
13:50I just got to make sure she's well enough behaved to where she doesn't get into any unsafe
13:55areas, stuff like that.
13:56And if you tell her to sit down, she sits down.
13:59If Nana doesn't pass the test, I don't know what I'm going to do.
14:01I don't want to put her in a kennel or anything.
14:04I mean, she can kick it.
14:05She sits.
14:06See, I mean, just snap it.
14:08Wow.
14:08And paw.
14:10You know, when she meets people.
14:12I'm impressed.
14:13She's got manners.
14:15You know?
14:16She knows words, too.
14:17Yeah?
14:18Yeah.
14:18Like, go get the bird.
14:19Go get that.
14:21See?
14:21She just starts tracking.
14:22She's looking for a bird.
14:23Yeah.
14:25Can she fetch?
14:26I mean, you got the ball.
14:27What do you do with that?
14:27Give it a shot.
14:29You got to tell her to kick it down.
14:30Kick it down.
14:31Good girl.
14:33All right.
14:36She loves the shade, too.
14:39She knows her place.
14:39She knows how to kick it, just like you, huh?
14:41Yeah.
14:43See, I mean, she's a good dog.
14:45All right, Bradley.
14:46I think you passed the test, so she'd stick around the shop.
14:48She's part of the family now.
14:50Does she get paid, too?
14:51No.
14:51No?
14:52No.
14:52Oh.
14:53Dog food.
14:54The test went good.
14:55I could see Rick was enjoying it.
14:57After this, Nana has Rick wrapped around her little paws, for sure.
15:00Tyler just came to me and wanted some help building a new urn for the coffee grinder.
15:05Him and Ron can't find one, so it's time for us to make one.
15:12Sweet.
15:13Hey, Dad.
15:14Yeah?
15:15Roger's here for the coffee grinder.
15:17Hey.
15:18Hey, Roger.
15:19How you doing?
15:20Good.
15:20Good to see you again.
15:21Good to see you.
15:21It's over here.
15:22Okay.
15:22I came here today to pick up a coffee grinder that my company purchased, and I'm very excited
15:28to see the final product.
15:29Well, there it is.
15:31Wow.
15:32We chose a coffee grinder because our company is in the coffee business, and we wanted
15:38a piece that would stand out in our corporate offices and our lobby.
15:41This was a big project.
15:43I mean, I had everyone on my team involved in this thing.
15:45Yeah.
15:45I'm really excited for you to see it.
15:47I mean, we put a lot of work into it, a lot of research, and a lot of time.
15:50You ready?
15:50Yeah.
15:51One, two, three.
15:53Oh, wow.
15:54That is incredible.
15:56When I saw this grinder, I was blown away.
15:58I think Rick and his team did a fantastic job, and I just couldn't be more happy with
16:03the piece.
16:04How the heck, Rick, did you get this thing to look so good?
16:06What we did is we sandblasted and everything, and then we put a coat of primer on it, and
16:11then we put three coats of this burgundy on there.
16:13Ted went through and pinstriped all the lettering on it, this Philadelphia on here.
16:17He pinstriped each one of the stars.
16:19And where did you find this urn for the top?
16:22Tyler and Ron went looking everywhere for an urn and couldn't find it.
16:24So what they had to do is they came up with an idea where they were going to go ahead and
16:28make one.
16:28So as much as I don't want to fabricate, just sometimes that's just the way it is.
16:32Rick, it's a beautiful piece, and I love everything about it.
16:36Now, the one thing, does it work?
16:38Will it actually grind coffee?
16:39Because I brought some of my own coffee.
16:41Yeah, yeah.
16:42Yeah.
16:46Okay, you ready?
16:47I can't wait to see this thing work.
16:49All right, here we go.
16:53That's awesome.
16:54Yeah, I can smell it.
16:58It's filling up the box.
17:00In addition to being an absolutely beautiful restoration, it grinds coffee.
17:05You want me to go brew some?
17:05Yeah, absolutely.
17:07I'll do it.
17:07So when we take people on a tour of our company, we'll be able to grind some coffee, make them
17:13a pot, and show them what American Star's all about.
17:16Cheers.
17:17Cheers, gentlemen.
17:17Awesome.
17:19That's good coffee.
17:21That is good coffee.
17:22I'm glad to do it.
17:23Thank you very much.
17:24Awesome.
17:25Thank you, Joe.
17:25It's been awesome.
17:26This motor right now, we've got one step left, and that's to fire it up.
17:29Man, this does not look good.
17:36I came to Rick's today to pick up my Evinrude outboard motor.
17:40Here we go.
17:40Oh, my God.
17:42I'm very excited to see if Rick was able to get it running.
17:45How's it going, Fonz?
17:57It's almost ready to start it on.
17:59It is?
17:59Yeah.
18:00Oh, man.
18:02This motor right now, it's ready to mount on the wall.
18:04We've got one step left, and that's to fire it up.
18:06Your rep's on the line.
18:07I want to pull this, okay?
18:08I want to see if this works.
18:09Okay.
18:10The customer wants it to work, and he wants it pretty on the wall.
18:13Okay, you ready?
18:13I'm ready.
18:14Here we go.
18:18F***.
18:19If it doesn't fire up, we're going to have to tear it apart, get it all greasy, and start
18:23the whole process all over again.
18:25And that's going to hurt my pocket.
18:28All right.
18:29Here we go.
18:31Man, this does not look good.
18:43Hold on.
18:44He's in here.
18:46Babe?
18:47What?
18:48JC's here for the motor.
18:49Give me a second, okay?
18:51Okay.
18:51I came to Rick's today to pick up my 1939 Evinrude outboard motor.
18:56Hey.
18:57When I brought this motor in, it wasn't running, so I'm very excited to see if Rick's...
19:01Rick was able to get it running after all these years.
19:04I think you're going to love this thing.
19:05I really like the way it came out.
19:06I'm very excited.
19:07It's just been sitting up for so many years.
19:09I want to see what it looks like now.
19:10You want to see it the way it's supposed to look.
19:12I look like what it's brand new.
19:13Okay.
19:14Come on.
19:14It's over here.
19:15It was dirty and greasy and rusty, and it needed a lot of tender loving care.
19:20This is the big one here now.
19:22Okay, you ready?
19:23Let's do it.
19:23All right.
19:24One, two, three.
19:28Awesome.
19:29Awesome.
19:30The motor is in there, right?
19:32We're almost there.
19:33There's the pine box.
19:34I love it so far.
19:35All right.
19:36You know, I think this is the way your grandfather would have restored it as he was a repairman,
19:39too.
19:40Oh, yeah.
19:40Here we go.
19:43Oh, my God.
19:45Hey, what do you think?
19:46That is awesome.
19:47When Rick opened up that case and I saw that motor for the first time, it was unbelievable.
19:52It exceeded my expectations of what it would look like.
19:55Are you sure that's the same motor?
19:57Yeah, that's the same motor.
19:58Unbelievable.
19:59Well, this thing has been in the family ever since I can remember and always would see it
20:03on the wall, and it never did run, and I always wanted it.
20:06My grandfather was ever going to fix it.
20:08It's a trophy.
20:09It's just an awesome trophy.
20:12It's beautiful.
20:13But before we put this thing up, I would love to see this thing run.
20:16Is that possible?
20:17Yeah.
20:17We're going to fire this thing right now.
20:19Alphonso!
20:20Yeah?
20:20Bring the water.
20:22When Fonzie and I tested this earlier, it wasn't working.
20:26We've made a few minor adjustments to it, so I really hope that does the trick.
20:30If it doesn't turn over, I'm really going to look like an idiot.
20:33All right.
20:34Here you go.
20:35Okay.
20:36A little hard.
20:38Real hard.
20:38You ready?
20:39Yep.
20:42Great!
20:45That's great.
20:46That's great.
20:46Ready to go to the lake?
20:48Yeah!
20:49When we got that motor started, it was unbelievable.
20:51I was just so excited to finally see it running in that condition.
20:55I don't know what to say.
20:56My dad, he'd be proud.
20:58Thanks, Frank.
20:59You bet you.
20:59Anytime.
21:00The paint, the chrome, the case, everything is just absolutely beautiful.
21:05Now that it's fully restored, it's never leaving my family.
21:08Nana!
21:10Nana!
21:10Nana!
21:10Nana!
21:18Nana!
21:21Nana!
21:21Nana!
21:22Kick it.
21:25Good doggie.
21:26Good doggie.
21:27Oh, a good doggie.
21:28Yes, you are.
21:29what Uncle Briggs got.
21:32You like those?
21:33You give me a paw?
21:34Oh, yeah, that's good.
21:36Is that good?
21:38Sorry, Bradley, but it looks like Nana just found her new best friend.
21:42Good doggy.
