00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02Wow.
00:03I brought an old trap machine I wanted you to look at.
00:05I'd like it functional.
00:06Um, I'm afraid to do anything with this.
00:08They gotta cast like that for a reason.
00:10Whoa!
00:12Whoa!
00:13Ah, here we go.
00:15This is nice.
00:16We're taking a big risk, hoping Rick's gonna look at it and go,
00:18Guys, this is a cool pump.
00:20What is that?
00:21This is our pick.
00:22This is just wicked looking.
00:24What the hell?
00:25This is just, oh God.
00:27Hit it!
00:28Good decision, maybe.
00:30Bad decision, probably.
00:31Woohoo!
00:33Yeah!
00:34Remember back in the day when things were made by hand
00:37and people took pride in their work?
00:40My name's Rick Dale, and I bring these things back to life.
00:45Every restoration has its own set of challenges.
00:48There's no owner's manual for what we do,
00:51but there's no job we can't handle.
01:07I've actually driven by a couple of times, but it looks like he's got some stuff.
01:11Ron is always on the lookout for places to go picking.
01:14He told me about this place in California, so I sent him and Tyler to check it out.
01:19I mean, this place is a long ways away, so it better be worth the while.
01:25There's this place, it's called Kramer Junction Antiques.
01:28They've got an antique store inside.
01:29Not really what we do, but out back, it looks like they've got a huge building
01:32with just the kind of stuff that we're interested in.
01:35Hey, how are you guys doing?
01:36Good, how are you?
01:37Real good.
01:37Me and my brother, we fix things up, and sometimes we sell stuff,
01:41sometimes we don't.
01:42It all depends on how much we get attached to them.
01:44We like to do 40s, 50s, 60s kind of stuff.
01:47Yeah.
01:48You got anything here for sale?
01:50Yeah, we got some stuff that we're probably not going to get around to doing.
01:53Oh, you do some of the stuff yourself?
01:54Yeah, we restore, me and my brother.
01:56Oh, cool.
01:56It's like you and my dad.
01:57So I'll show you some of the stuff.
01:59Yeah, I'm excited.
02:01Oh, my God.
02:04Holy crap.
02:06This place is amazing.
02:07I mean, there's airplanes hanging from the ceiling.
02:09There's coke machines.
02:10There's gas pumps everywhere.
02:11This is what me and Ron live for, is going into places like this
02:14and just being so stunned by how amazing everything is.
02:17This is a pinball machine.
02:19Oh.
02:20Old one.
02:21That's bad.
02:22This is very, very cool.
02:23I've seen 50s, and they usually have at least two players on them.
02:26With this just being one player, I think it's probably early, early 50s, late 40s.
02:31Uh-huh.
02:31But that's why it kind of caught my eye.
02:33You know, I don't know much about it.
02:35I bought it at an auction over in Yuma.
02:36It does work.
02:38Little contacts will get sticky every once in a while.
02:40Yeah.
02:40If it's played all the time, it'll play.
02:42Yeah, I have to constantly play them.
02:44Yeah.
02:44Is this something that I could buy from you?
02:46Yeah, I'd like $7.50 for it.
02:49Um, that sounds a little bit high for what we normally would pay,
02:54but I do not want to look more.
02:56Yeah, let me show you some more down here.
02:58All right.
02:59I'm excited.
02:59I always like to get a read on who I'm dealing with early on my picks.
03:03I need to know if they're going to be asking for sky-high prices or more reasonable ones.
03:07This pinball's a bit too high, but I think this guy could play ball on other stuff.
03:17One of the most exciting things about my job is taking on new projects.
03:21When a customer drives up to the shop, I'm always floored by what they want to get restored.
03:26I brought an old trap machine I wanted you to look at.
03:28Trap machine? Cool.
03:29Let's check it out.
03:30Today I came to Rick's restoration to have my 1943 White Flyer Trap Machine restored.
03:35Wow.
03:36It's old and dirty.
03:37My trap machine is used to launch clay targets.
03:40Competitive trap shooting.
03:41This machine came out of an old trap club in California.
03:44They were getting ready to toss it out, so I grabbed it.
03:46This thing is cool.
03:48So, where'd you get it? What's up with it?
03:49Well, it's an old Western White Flyer machine, and I work for White Flyer.
03:53Oh.
03:54This was the first model when it got real competitive.
03:57This was for the large shooting events.
03:59So, are you a target shooter?
04:00I am a competitive shooter.
04:01I like to shoot trap, skeet.
04:03That's cool stuff.
04:04I know a little bit about clay target shooting now, but this was long before my time.
04:08Do you know much about it?
04:09Well, the deal with trapping is, at the very beginning, in England, this was a big sport for them.
04:14And they actually used live pigeons in the beginning.
04:17That's what I hear.
04:18The reason why you called it trapping was...
04:19Well, you'd have to trap a bird, I guess.
04:21You put the birds in a box.
04:24That's a trap.
04:25Wow.
04:25They would shoot real live birds.
04:26Well, boom, boom, boom.
04:27We wouldn't get away with that today.
04:29We wouldn't get away with it, and the other thing is, they didn't have any more birds.
04:33Passenger pigeons were the birds of choice, but they were almost extinct by the late 1800s.
04:38So, the clay pigeon became the standard target for trap shooting.
04:41Alright, Bill, so how are you seeing this thing done?
04:43Well, I want to get it restored.
04:45I would like it original.
04:46I'd like to find the original color, but I'd like it functional.
04:48The end is busted off, and I'd like to get that fixed.
04:52I want to take the completed trap machine and set it up in our building back at the Grand American,
04:57which is the largest ATA shoot in the world.
04:59Oh, cool.
05:00So, sort of a museum piece after you do a little demo in with it.
05:04That's kind of what I'm thinking.
05:05Alright, well, we're going to have to take this all the way off.
05:07It's all aluminum, so it cleans up really, really nice.
05:09We'll take every single nut and bolt off, every single piece.
05:13Dismantle it totally, and then we'll CAD plate these in so it looks original, all nice.
05:18We'll figure out this bottom turret.
05:19Figuring out and tearing apart is probably about six hours.
05:22We've got two, three hours of powder coating it.
05:24Sounds good.
05:24I think I can match this green exactly, so we'll do that.
05:27Well, that sounds like a lot of work.
05:28What's it going to cost?
05:30By the time we're done with all that, I'm looking right around, let's see.
05:34I'm saying, I'm saying 2200.
05:39Well, I'll get it done if you'll come out and shoot with me.
05:41Well, quite honestly, I'd love to.
05:42I'd love to.
05:43Alright, I think we should do it.
05:45Awesome, awesome, awesome!
05:46I was a little taken back, but after thinking about it for a second,
05:49it's going to be really pretty.
05:51He's going to do a lot more than I had expected,
05:52and it's going to be something I can really value for a while.
05:57I don't feel no tension.
05:58I don't feel any tension either.
06:01As for you, Dave, you're going to have to fix that.
06:03Nice.
06:04I just got this contraption, and Rick calls it a trap shooter.
06:06I've never seen one before, but it has a ton of moving parts,
06:09and it's really rusted.
06:10So I'm having Dave help me tear it down.
06:12I did this for a summer, working on these little trap shoots.
06:15The only thing I can remember off these things is my fingers hurting.
06:19I tried shooting once.
06:21I could have hit the broad side of a barn.
06:23Watch your hands.
06:26Oh, sit on that.
06:28I think my job here is done.
06:36This place is just huge.
06:38There's got to be like six acres of nothing but cool stuff out here.
06:41Tyler and I are at Kramer Junction Antiques with the owner looking for some items to buy and restore.
06:46I told Rick this place looked awesome from the road, but I had no idea it was going to be
06:50this badass.
06:51Oh, God.
06:52Can we get in there?
06:53Yeah, you can get in there.
06:54No way.
06:55That's a real-life tank.
06:56Mm-hmm.
06:57I've always liked the military stuff, so we've got a half-track and a scout car and a jeep that
07:02we used to all run through the desert and tear it up,
07:04and then we ended up restoring it.
07:05That is freaking awesome.
07:08You guys ready for a ride?
07:09Woo!
07:09I'm ready.
07:10All right.
07:10Get in, Ron.
07:13If my dad was here, he'd tell us to get back to work and find something to restore at the
07:17shop.
07:17But when you've got the chance to ride a tank, you've got to take it.
07:20Good decision, maybe bad decision, probably.
07:23Does it do donuts?
07:24Oh, yeah.
07:27Okay, you hanging on?
07:29Hit it.
07:33Woo!
07:33Woo!
07:34Woo-hoo!
07:35Ha-ha!
07:37When I asked him if it did donuts, I wasn't really serious, but I think he thought I was.
07:42Oh!
07:44Oh!
07:45Woo-hoo!
07:46This guy, he doesn't care.
07:48He's going about 30 straight to the wall, and then he just turns it as hard as he can, and
07:52we fly out.
07:53Oh, God.
07:54Ha-ha-ha-ha!
07:56Ah!
07:56And I'm not even in the thing.
07:58I'm just sitting on top of it.
08:00Woo!
08:02That was awesome.
08:03Woo!
08:04That's kind of fun, isn't it?
08:05The dude is cool to the bone.
08:08When you're out in the desert, you've got to do something to entertain yourself.
08:10Definitely.
08:11Yep.
08:11This is what makes picking fun.
08:15Ah, here we go.
08:16Yeah, here's some gas pumps.
08:18Very nice.
08:19This one here would be interested in selling.
08:21Okay, this is nice.
08:22Yep.
08:22It's still got the numbers, which is very, very key.
08:25Missing some handles and stuff like that, not too bad for us.
08:28Not a big deal for restorers.
08:30How much?
08:31We'd like to get $15 for it.
08:33Oh.
08:34He's at $15 on that?
08:35Yep.
08:36What, um, the other one at the end.
08:38I've never seen one of these.
08:39Who manufactured it?
08:40Do you know?
08:40I can't really...
08:41Tyler, you've got good eyes.
08:42Can you tell who does that?
08:43Yeah.
08:43It's an aerial pump.
08:44I believe that pump was probably found on the high desert someplace.
08:48I don't know where it was at, but I think it's an interesting pump.
08:51We wanted $450 for it.
08:53This here is in our price range.
08:55Okay.
08:56It's still a little high since I don't know exactly what it is.
08:59I would be in the $350 range for it.
09:02Well, I'll come down $50, so I'll go $400.
09:06Mm-hmm.
09:07Alright, $400?
09:08$400.
09:08It's a deal.
09:09Okay, let's do it.
09:10Awesome.
09:10We're taking a big risk at spending $400 on this pump, hoping that when we take it back,
09:14Rick's gonna look at it and go, guys, this is a cool, rare pump that he can sell for
09:19a good price.
09:20We're gonna see what happens.
09:21Hey, Bill.
09:22How you been?
09:23So where's this trap machine?
09:25Kelly, move that truck.
09:28Oh, that's incredible.
09:30Good to meet you.
09:30Nice to meet you.
09:31I met a lady that was looking to buy an old gas pump, so I brought her to the shop
09:34to see our latest work.
09:35So are you ready?
09:36I'm ready.
09:37Okay.
09:38Oh my goodness.
09:51God, I hope we didn't screw up.
09:52I'm nervous.
09:53Tyler and I were out picking for items to bring back to the shop.
09:56And we took a chance and purchased an antique hand crank pump that we've never seen before.
10:02I'm gonna scratch it.
10:04Oh, my bad.
10:05The only problem is we don't know if Rick's gonna love it or hate it.
10:10Okay, my father's coming.
10:11My father's coming.
10:16What is that?
10:18This?
10:18This is our pick.
10:19Looks like a big bottle.
10:21What'd you pay for this?
10:24Uh...
10:25400.
10:29400.
10:31400's awesome.
10:32You did a good job.
10:35It's bad to the bone, man.
10:36I mean, first of all, it's 1915, so they're gone.
10:39What it is, it's called a Boiled Dayton.
10:42You turn it on and then you just start hand cranking.
10:44And it would assist it with air.
10:46That was very rare.
10:47Ron and Tyler really came through with this vintage hand crank gas pump.
10:51We restore a lot of antique pumps here at the shop,
10:54but I've never had a chance to get my hands on one like this.
10:57We need to bring this thing back to life.
10:59And hopefully, Ron will be able to find a buyer for this thing ASAP.
11:03So, how much do you think it's gonna be worth?
11:05If it's as rare as I think, I'd be asking about eight or nine grand.
11:11All right, guys.
11:12Let's go ahead and get it to tear down.
11:14All right.
11:16We worried for nothing.
11:17Basically.
11:22How you doing up there, Kyle?
11:24Pretty crusty up here.
11:26You ready to get dirty?
11:27Why not?
11:28Rick Scott, Brentley, and I turned down this vintage fuel pump.
11:31It's a real cool old-style hand pump,
11:32but this thing looks like it's been tossed out of a car.
11:35It's so dented.
11:36So, what is this thing?
11:37It looks like something you'd like put your head in.
11:39Huh?
11:40And it would just suck like...
11:41Think that what happened to you?
11:45I think we're pretty much free up here.
11:48Oh, man.
11:50Yeah.
11:51Yeah.
11:52That's nasty.
11:54Check it out.
11:54It does look like brains.
11:56Dude, that is just gross.
12:06I've got the guys working on the hand crank gas pump.
12:09Because this thing doesn't have a buyer yet,
12:11we've got to get it through the line as fast as possible
12:13so that we can actually make some money.
12:15So, first,
12:16Brentley is sandblasting all the rust and the old paint.
12:19That's what I'm talking about.
12:20Phil is smoothing out all the body dents on this thing,
12:23and believe me, it has a lot of them.
12:29Once I've got all the dents hammered out,
12:31I've got to apply a filler
12:32that will take out all the minor imperfections.
12:37I'm using this air file to do the majority of the sanding on this
12:40because it's twice as fast as doing it by hand.
12:43After I sand down the filler and get it all smooth,
12:45it's got to get painted.
12:58Earlier a customer brought in a trap shooter.
13:00Now the guys are powder coating the parts.
13:02Powder coating creates a hard finish
13:04that's more durable than paint.
13:06And because this thing is actually going to be used
13:08and not just a museum piece,
13:10I don't want the paint wearing off.
13:12When this thing came in,
13:14the tip was broken off the end of the arm.
13:16So I have Dave trying to fix that right now.
13:22Not bad, huh?
13:30All right, we're going to put it together.
13:31Hopefully.
13:32Hopefully.
13:34Rick has Dave and I putting this vintage pump back together.
13:37Working here as long as I have,
13:38I've done a lot of pumps.
13:39But the cool thing about this pump is it's internal plumbing.
13:42It's pretty complicated and it has to be just right.
13:45Sure didn't make this stuff easy to take apart.
13:47We're going to put it back together, huh?
13:52Okay, got it.
13:53Got it?
13:54Sweet.
13:55That's it.
13:56Thanks, Dave.
14:05Hey, Rick.
14:06Hey.
14:06Want to introduce you to Leslie.
14:08She's the one that's interested in pumps.
14:10Good to meet you.
14:10Nice to meet you.
14:11Good to meet you.
14:11Ron was able to track down a potential buyer for the pump
14:14that he and Tyler found on the pick.
14:16We put a huge amount of work into this one,
14:18so hopefully I'll be able to flip it today.
14:20What are you going to do with the gas pump?
14:21Well, we have an old-style service station at the distillery where I work.
14:25Okay.
14:25So I'm looking for some items to put on display there.
14:28Cool.
14:28Come on over here.
14:29Okay, great.
14:30Ron tells me his brother does a great job at this sort of thing,
14:32so I'm here to see what they do.
14:34So are you ready?
14:35I'm ready.
14:36Let's see it.
14:37I think you got just what you're looking for.
14:39Here we go.
14:42Oh, my goodness.
14:44That is fantastic.
14:46I love it.
14:47Cool, huh?
14:48Oh, this is so cool.
14:50When he first opened that gate and I saw the pump, I was floored.
14:53The shape, the color scheme, everything was exactly what I had been hoping for
14:57and just didn't expect, but there it was all in one package, and it was great.
15:01What is it exactly?
15:03Well, it's called a Boiled Dayton, and it was manufactured in 1915.
15:07They didn't make very many of them because Boiled Dayton went out of business in 1928.
15:11The other thing about this pump is this is an aero pump.
15:14You would crank it, and it would assist it with air.
15:18There was only maybe one pump that did that.
15:20Fantastic.
15:21I want to sell you this, but I want you to get the full gist of what the work is
15:26in this.
15:26I mean, if you really saw this in the beginning, you wouldn't think it could be done.
15:30Everything was just ruined, rotted, rusted.
15:32This pole right here was bent all the way over.
15:34There's a ton of pounding to get that all smooth again.
15:38Oh, this is incredible.
15:40So if I wanted to pump gas out of it, could I do that?
15:43Yeah, actually the insides have totally been restored too, so it works.
15:50That's gorgeous.
15:51We polished all these out because it's got a lot of brass and chrome in there.
15:55And then what we did was we put a hose on here, but this is a hose of the style
15:59of the era.
16:00So that all works.
16:00This gas pump is a beautiful machine.
16:03The dials, the valves, the knobs, and all of the mechanics of it.
16:07That just blew me away.
16:08I love it.
16:09I want to talk price.
16:11Okay.
16:12I can do that.
16:13I'm looking probably for 10 grand.
16:1610 grand.
16:17I probably have at least 200 man hours in this piece.
16:21So.
16:22I love it, but at 10 grand, it's not within my budget.
16:26Okay.
16:27I'm thinking 8,500.
16:3085.
16:33Well, that's a lot of work in that.
16:36That'd be too thin on my pocket.
16:39Can you go to nine?
16:40I mean, that's a thousand off.
16:45That's stretching the budget, but I'll do it.
16:49All right.
16:49Awesome.
16:50Awesome.
16:51Great.
16:51Well, let's go in the office and take care of some paperwork.
16:54Ron's going to load it for you.
16:55Sounds good.
16:57When we agreed on $9,000, I was happy because the color scheme, the shape, everything about
17:02it is just going to fit perfectly at our distillery.
17:07This is so exciting.
17:08Pull.
17:10Whoa!
17:11I'm going to drop a shell in here.
17:13I'm going to close it.
17:14When you pull the trigger now, it's going to fire.
17:16Okay.
17:17Watch the gun now.
17:18What?
17:19Don't duck.
17:20I wasn't going to shoot you.
17:31All right, man.
17:32You ready to get this thing together?
17:33Hell yeah.
17:34All right.
17:37Earlier, a customer brought in a trap shooter to be restored.
17:40This thing was pretty complicated and had a couple of broken pieces that we had to fab.
17:44But now that the majority of the heavy lifting has been done, I really hope Kyle and Dave can get
17:49this thing put back together.
17:50That should be it, huh?
17:51Yep.
17:52You know what, Dave?
17:53No matter what cowboy says, you ain't that bad.
18:00I've never shot skeet in my life.
18:02That means we're betting because I'm going to kick your ass at this.
18:05There's no way you're going to kick my ass.
18:06I'm good at everything.
18:07We're meeting the customer at a shooting range, so we can not only show off the trap shooter, but also,
18:12hopefully, give this guy some awesome target practice.
18:15Hey, babe.
18:16I got all the directions ready for you.
18:18Thanks.
18:18Here you go.
18:19Have fun.
18:20Hey, babe.
18:20What?
18:21Why don't you go with me?
18:23Are you serious?
18:24Yeah.
18:24You want to come?
18:25Cool.
18:26Yeah.
18:27Ron, you're going to have to stay.
18:29Sorry.
18:30There is some work to be done in the shop.
18:32I know there is.
18:33I don't do work at the shop.
18:34You know, the thing is, is that I do need somebody at the shop today.
18:37I get it.
18:38That sucks.
18:39Let's go.
18:40Let's go.
18:41I'm so excited about going on this little trip with Rick.
18:43I never get to go anywhere, so this is just awesome.
18:47So, you ever shot a gun?
18:49Yeah.
18:49Didn't you know?
18:50No.
18:50I didn't know.
18:53Hey, Bill.
18:54Hey, Rick.
18:55How you been?
18:56How's it going?
18:56Good.
18:57Good to see you.
18:58I'm excited to be here.
18:59So, where's this trap machine?
19:00It's over here.
19:01I've been out here before, but I've never used my own trap machine.
19:04Hopefully, Rick won't let me down.
19:06You ready?
19:07I'm ready.
19:07All right.
19:08Kelly, move that truck.
19:12Oh, my goodness.
19:14Oh, that's incredible.
19:16It looks like it's brand new.
19:18When Kelly first drove that truck away, and I saw the trap machine for the first time,
19:21I was blown away.
19:23So, what do you think?
19:24Rick, it's amazing.
19:25How did you get it to look like this?
19:27Well, what we had to do was, first, we had some broken parts to fix.
19:30If you remember, this had a big chunk out of here.
19:32Oh, that's right.
19:32We welded that up, polished it all out, you know.
19:35Once we got done with that, we ended up sandblasting it.
19:37We sandblasted everything out.
19:39The unit itself, it's all cast.
19:41So, what we ended up doing was we powder-coated this after we sandblasted it,
19:45so that it'd give it a nice, you know, smooth, hard, hard finish.
19:48So, none of this paint will come off.
19:50Great.
19:51There's quite a few moving parts on this.
19:53I mean, it's like a gun.
19:54Well, when I gave it to you, nothing moved.
19:55Right.
19:56So, now, it actually, with all these moving parts and everything moving,
19:59we figured out that it oscillates now.
20:01Fantastic.
20:02I didn't think it would ever do that again.
20:03Well, it's beautiful.
20:04I mean, I just couldn't ask for anything better.
20:06I'm a little afraid to even use it.
20:07That trap machine was in pretty rough shape.
20:09If we can actually shoot off of it, I'll be amazed.
20:11I think you're going to need to test it out.
20:13See how you like it.
20:14Let's try it.
20:15All right.
20:15Now, this is the real reason we came out here today,
20:18and I hope these clay pigeons fly as far and as fast as we expect them to.
20:23All right.
20:24Let's give it a try.
20:26You're going to cock it first.
20:28Yeah.
20:29That's fantastic.
20:30Okay.
20:32I get the first shot.
20:34This is so exciting.
20:35Am I safe here?
20:36Oh, yeah.
20:37You're safe right there.
20:38All right.
20:38You guys all set?
20:39Yeah.
20:44Pull.
20:48Whoa.
20:49All right, Rick.
20:50That's awesome.
20:52When I first shot off of it, I saw how smooth it worked and it oscillated.
20:57I mean, it was just awesome.
21:00It was like when I was a little kid.
21:04Whoa.
21:06Nice shot.
21:07Yes.
21:07That was awesome.
21:08That was cool.
21:08Oh, my God.
21:09That was cool.
21:10It is amazing.
21:11That was cool.
21:12It's fantastic.
21:13Well, Rick, it looks great.
21:15It works great.
21:16You got to try it.
21:18Seeing Bill thrilled about how the trap shooter turned out really means a lot.
21:22This is why I restore.
21:24Bringing back an old, out-of-commissioned object and giving it another shot.
21:30Whoa!
21:31Yeah!
21:32Yes!
21:34Yes!
21:36Yes!
21:37Yes!
21:37Yes!
21:37Yes!
21:37Yes!
21:37Yes!
21:37Yes!
21:37Yes!
21:38Yes!
21:38All right.
21:40Pull!
21:42Oh!
21:43Good job, Kelly.
21:45You know, I felt like such a badass blowing off one of those 12-gauge guns.
21:48I think I'm going to come out here on the weekends and start shooting.
21:51I might even join the league.
21:53Pull!
21:55Oh!
21:56Yeah!
21:57I could do this all night long.
21:59Ha, ha, ha!
