00:01Hey!
00:02Ahoy!
00:03Up next on American Restoration.
00:05Wow.
00:06This is a golden arm wrestling machine.
00:08That's cool.
00:09You can see, like, different colors.
00:10The most hideous house paint they can find.
00:12They slap on it.
00:13Right.
00:14So you ready to see it?
00:15Let's do it.
00:16Oh, wow!
00:18What's that for?
00:19Are you sure you're supposed to be polishing that?
00:21They hand me the crap and tell me to polish it.
00:22That's what I do.
00:23Okay, well, that's a problem.
00:25He does not like it, let alone probably me, a woman.
00:28But, oh, wow.
00:29That looks cool.
00:30It's an easy ringer washer.
00:32This is the throttle.
00:33This is the clutch.
00:34It's almost like a motorcycle.
00:35Think it could be done?
00:36This is just...
00:37I don't know.
00:42Look at a man's workbench.
00:44You see his passions.
00:47His work's in progress.
00:51The things that drive him crazy.
00:55Projects that...
00:57You get the point.
00:58Anyway, every workbench tells a story.
01:01And this is ours.
01:02American Restoration.
01:11You know, technology is an awesome thing.
01:14I mean, stuff like smartphones and computers have made our lives so much easier.
01:18Not to mention, kids out there got all sorts of electronic games to choose from.
01:22But my favorite games are games that don't require any electric power.
01:27I got something interesting.
01:28Kind of a weird amusement machine I want you to look at.
01:30Oh, yeah?
01:31I came by Rick's today to bring by my 1960s golden arm wrestling machine.
01:37Wow.
01:39That's cool.
01:40I'm the proprietor of the Pinball Hall of Fame here in Las Vegas.
01:44The golden arm machine and I go way, way back.
01:47I've had it for years.
01:48It was one of my first machines.
01:50This is cool.
01:51Well, basically, what you do is this is like an arm wrestling arm.
01:54You sit here like this.
01:56You try to battle it.
01:58What you're doing is you're compressing a shock absorber.
02:01No electronics in it at all.
02:02Wow.
02:03You just picked it up and let it rip.
02:05Yeah.
02:06Yeah.
02:07I started running my first arcade in 76, and this is one of my first pieces.
02:10Wow.
02:11I don't even remember where I got it, but I remembered I paid $100 for it.
02:14Wow.
02:15I've been hauling it around with me ever since.
02:17Midway, they made something else.
02:19They made some other machines.
02:20What they're most famous for was they made Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Galaga.
02:25Oh, yeah.
02:26They were really, really ahead of their time on electronic stuff.
02:28Right.
02:29You wouldn't know it from this machine because there's no electronics.
02:31Right, right.
02:32But they started with this.
02:33This is one of their early ones, yeah.
02:34Yeah, yeah.
02:35That's pretty cool.
02:36To me, I can just see 60s road all over this.
02:38We should be getting a plexiglass.
02:39We've got particle wood instead of plywood.
02:41Then you do this as a cast.
02:42That flower child.
02:43Yeah, flower child.
02:44That says 60s right there.
02:45Yeah.
02:46You see, like, different colors.
02:47It was orange at one time, and it's got black on it now.
02:51Yeah, the most hideous house paint they can find.
02:53They slap on it.
02:54Right, right, right.
02:55And they're real hard to take it off, too.
02:56Then on the inside, it doesn't have a lot of mechanical to it.
02:59I see springs going different.
03:01This looks like a spring across here.
03:02This is here.
03:03So you just played it to play it, right?
03:05I mean, you didn't win anything.
03:06There was no tickets.
03:07There was nothing.
03:08You just played it for your own.
03:09Well, things have changed, right?
03:11I mean, that's basically what it always was.
03:12You got bragging rights.
03:13That's all it is.
03:14That's why old people are so pathetic, is this is all we had for entertainment back
03:19in the day.
03:20That's right.
03:21All right.
03:22So how far do you want to go?
03:23What do you want to do?
03:24Well, this is going in the pinball museum.
03:27Okay.
03:28It's very important that the finishes and materials be very durable.
03:31Gotcha.
03:32What do you think it's going to cost me?
03:33You know, I'm thinking right around $4,800 to do the whole thing.
03:37Uh, I think I can live with the price.
03:40All right.
03:41Awesome.
03:42Awesome.
03:43My hope on this project is that when Rick gets done with it, it's something that you
03:46walk into the pinball museum and you go, wow, that looks great.
03:50That's what I'm looking for.
03:52Earlier this year, Kelly and I made it official and we got married and it's been amazing.
04:02But here at work, it's been a little stressful because she comes to me every single day and
04:07wants to have a bigger role here at the shop.
04:09We're spending a lot of money around here.
04:11But what do you want to do?
04:12I mean, do you want to, what's your idea?
04:14Money managing.
04:15Tyler's the foreman, I will be the money manager.
04:19There's always been a lot of problems around this shop and I've never said anything.
04:23I've bit my tongue because it's Rick's business.
04:25But now that we're married, it's our business and I should have more say around here.
04:30It's been a guy's shop.
04:31We haven't had a girl in the shop.
04:32I don't even know when we had a girl in the shop.
04:34But that's why it's disorganized because there is no girl in the shop.
04:39Some of the guys are insane.
04:41I mean, really, I mean, they're really, really hard to deal with.
04:43I know for a fact that Kelly has no problem telling people what she's got on her mind.
04:49On one hand, I'm going to have mutiny amongst every single one of my guys.
04:52Or on the other hand, I mean, she might be able to get the job done.
04:56What do you think?
04:57Okay, I'm going to give you one project, okay?
04:59It's going to be that golden arm machine.
05:00Okay.
05:01And at the end of this thing, I need to know where we're at.
05:03Okay.
05:04Alright?
05:05I got this.
05:06I'm going to give her a job from start to finish.
05:08If she can show me how much we profit, how much we lost, how much we spend in labor, and everything, then great.
05:14If she can't do that, then she's going to have to find something else to do.
05:17Back up just a little bit.
05:23Hold on.
05:24Good, man.
05:26Hey.
05:27How are you doing today?
05:30Good.
05:31I'm Rick.
05:32Wyatt.
05:33Wyatt.
05:34What can I do for you?
05:35Got something you might be interested in.
05:36Something I might be interested in?
05:37You want to sell it?
05:38I'd like to restore it.
05:39Restore it?
05:40Yeah.
05:41Well, let's look.
05:42I come down to Rick's restoration to drop off my Yeezy ringer washer that I brought down from Canada.
05:46That's good.
05:47Right there.
05:48Thanks, guys.
05:49So where'd you get this thing?
05:50I run a scrapyard in Canada, and this showed up at our gate one morning to be dropped off for scrap, and I just couldn't let it go, so I brought it down here.
06:00It's very cool.
06:01The very, very beginning, the washing machine was basically a watch board, and you used it with your hands.
06:06Nobody likes doing laundry, though.
06:07No.
06:08I don't know anybody who likes doing laundry.
06:09That's right, yeah.
06:10So the way this worked was, I mean, it's basically the washer and the dryer, right?
06:13You know what this is.
06:14This is the ringer.
06:15Pull this out of the way like this.
06:17You would fire up the motor.
06:19You pull this.
06:20The motor would get running.
06:21This is the throttle.
06:22This is the clutch.
06:23It's almost like a motorcycle because you got motor.
06:26You got all kinds of gears in there.
06:27You get it going.
06:28Actually, what this thing did is went up and down, up and down, up and down.
06:32This washing machine is pretty cool, but it's a very unusual item for us.
06:36I can't say that there's a huge collector's market, but I am looking forward to possibly fixing it up, though.
06:42I mean, people bring all kinds of wild stuff in here to get restored, and this is just, I don't know.
06:47What are you looking to do to it?
06:48I'd like to see it back in original condition.
06:51Motor running, agitator, that all working good, and what do you figure?
06:56You know, I mean, to get all that done and everything going on, I'm looking at 6,500 to restore the whole thing.
07:05Go for it, yeah.
07:06Awesome.
07:09We'll take care of some paperwork.
07:10We'll put it in line.
07:11Perfect.
07:12Okay, get it started.
07:13Okay.
07:14I have a suggestion box.
07:15This will be for everybody to put in their two cents.
07:19This has disaster written all over it.
07:21Tell Rick Dale he is a cheap bastard.
07:26Came to Rick's today to pick up my easy washer.
07:28So you ready?
07:29You bet.
07:30Okay, here we go.
07:31What do you think?
07:32Um.
07:41So Rick is now allowing me to get involved with managing the money, and first task I want
07:46to do is regulate the paint lockers.
07:49Hey, Kyle.
07:50Morning, Kelly.
07:51What you got?
07:52Paint sign-out sheet.
07:55This is crucial for job costing so we know how much paint is being used.
07:59Okay?
08:00And make sure you sign out that paint that's in your hand.
08:02Because I'm going to be looking at that list every day.
08:04Okay?
08:05Okay.
08:06Saving money is always a good thing, but taking a paint supply of rattle cans?
08:11Come on, Kelly.
08:12Kyle's like looking at me like, why are you out here?
08:15What are you doing?
08:16He's just going to have to deal with it.
08:17He's not happy, but he's going to have to deal with it.
08:19Turn that off.
08:20I need to talk to you.
08:23What's that for?
08:24The golden arm.
08:25Are you sure you're supposed to be polishing that?
08:27That's what they gave me.
08:28Okay, but you know, sometimes those have to go to chrome.
08:31So are you polishing and it was supposed to go to chrome?
08:34I'm polishing it.
08:35I don't know what the hell I'm doing.
08:37Okay, well that's the problem.
08:38They hand me the crap and tell me to polish it.
08:40That's what I do.
08:41We got enough managers that it is already.
08:43I don't need no more people telling me what to do.
08:45I know my job.
08:47Too many chiefs are none of Indians.
08:49Oh, my God.
08:50Cowboy reacted in the usual manner he always does.
08:53It's not his fault.
08:54He didn't do it.
08:55He's just doing what he's supposed to do.
08:57He does not like it.
08:59Let alone probably me, a woman.
09:01But oh well.
09:02Too bad.
09:03Oh, God.
09:04Look who's here.
09:05Eric.
09:06What's up, guys?
09:07The twin brothers from another mother.
09:08We were doing pretty good till you got here.
09:09Oh, yeah.
09:10We were happy.
09:11I just brightened your day, don't you know?
09:12I know.
09:13Eric's our official resident picker and he's always stopping by trying to pass off some
09:26of his junk as if it's gold or something.
09:28But there's always the potential for a few diamonds in the rough with some of his picks.
09:32So what do you got?
09:33What do you hear?
09:34I got everything that you want.
09:35When Rick sees what I got in the back of my truck, he's just going to be amazed.
09:38I mean, it's going to blow his mind.
09:39You had a wish list?
09:40Ta-da.
09:41This is like Christmas for you, I bet.
09:43Well, you do have some...
09:45I got some usable items.
09:47Let's see what you got.
09:48This thing looks cool.
09:49This is definitely a mech.
09:50Mm-hmm.
09:51Lots of tips.
09:52You ever thought of bringing in like a full machine instead of just little parts?
09:55I like the littler stuff.
09:56This is good stuff here.
09:58See that?
09:59See?
10:00Scratching stuff off the wish list already.
10:01I have no clue what that is.
10:03It's a pulley or something, isn't it?
10:05Come on.
10:06Scrap.
10:07I mean, these are parts that we can use, but I want a total piece.
10:09So I start going through his truck and all there is is parts of items.
10:13It's just scraps and stuff.
10:14And there's not one single thing that's totally complete that we can restore.
10:18We need some full pieces.
10:20One single piece.
10:22I got a whole other piece.
10:25Look at that.
10:27Crap.
10:28Be careful with that now.
10:30Look at that.
10:31That's what I'm talking about right there.
10:33It's a total 20 scale, 1920s.
10:35That's totally complete.
10:36It's missing a little glass in the front.
10:37That's it.
10:38That's an unbelievable find.
10:39You know what says Merchantile there?
10:41What it was?
10:42It was a scale at a store.
10:43It would weigh like sugar and vegetables or whatever.
10:46And see, you can sort of see the way the scale read.
10:48This is one cent graduations.
10:50This particular device basically computed everything for you.
10:53So you're telling me it's like smarter than Ron?
10:55Well, I would say it's definitely smarter than Ron.
10:58I mean, you push on it right here.
10:59Ron, how much is 250 pounds times 3.62 cents?
11:04Go ahead.
11:05I don't know.
11:07So what do you want for it?
11:10I'll tell you right now.
11:11Like, I bought it $100 a pound.
11:13About right there.
11:14600 bucks?
11:15There you go.
11:16Now we're talking.
11:17Now we're weighing.
11:21I still got to strip it.
11:22I still got to bring it all the way back.
11:23Try not to use car salesman on me or something.
11:25I know.
11:26I know.
11:27But you want me to just tell you where I'm at?
11:28And that's it?
11:29Yeah, tell me we're done.
11:30Here's the deal.
11:31300 this, that's it.
11:32You can take the other stuff.
11:33I'll take that, though, for 300.
11:34That's it.
11:36Yeah, 300 works for me.
11:38All right.
11:39Awesome.
11:40Awesome.
11:41Thank you very much.
11:42Got a complete piece.
11:43We can start on that.
11:44Let's go in the office and we'll get you some money.
11:45All right.
11:46And then, Ron, put it in line.
11:47I'll settle for the three right now.
11:48It's money in my pocket.
11:49But I wish I would have had Tyler around, man.
11:51I could have worked a better deal with Tyler.
11:58I think I'm starting to get this shop to run more efficiently.
12:01But the one thing we need to work on is communication.
12:03You know, the guys don't express themselves very well.
12:05So it all stays bottled up.
12:07And then they explode.
12:08And they're not happy.
12:09I think if everyone at the shop was happier, then work will go smooth.
12:13What are you doing over there, Kel?
12:15Come over and see.
12:16I have a suggestion box.
12:18You have a what?
12:20I have a suggestion box.
12:22Look.
12:25Isn't this good?
12:26Yeah.
12:27This will be for everybody to put in their two cents.
12:31Wow.
12:32A suggestion box?
12:33Really?
12:34So, you know, I even put the little flower on there to remind them that,
12:37you know, this is not necessarily a bad box.
12:40Think good thoughts with the flower and drop it in.
12:43Isn't that cute?
12:44Yeah.
12:45We'll see.
12:46So do you want to be the first?
12:47I'll do it.
12:48You will?
12:49All right.
12:50Thanks.
12:51Yeah.
12:52My dad told me Kelly was going to be around the shop more.
12:54He said it was to manage money.
12:55I don't see how a suggestion box with a flower on it is going to help us do that.
12:59This has disaster written all over it.
13:09All right, Wyatt.
13:10Hey.
13:11Today's the day.
13:12How are you doing, bud?
13:13Good.
13:14Good to see you.
13:15I came to Rick's today to pick up my EZ washer.
13:17And when I found that washing machine in our scrapyard there, somebody dropped off.
13:21I never knew how old it was or nothing.
13:23I knew it was in bad shape.
13:24The wheels are falling off.
13:25But I didn't know if the motor ran or not.
13:28This machine is rare.
13:29It was rare.
13:30Rare, rare.
13:31And for you to find it, just somebody throwing it away is a big deal.
13:34So you've got a killer find.
13:36So you ready?
13:37You bet.
13:38All right, here we go.
13:39Let's do this thing.
13:40One, two, three.
13:42Oh, wow.
13:43Take it in.
13:44Awesome job.
13:45What do you think?
13:46I can't believe it.
13:47It's just like brand new.
13:49What I brought in and now what it is now, it's two different machines.
13:51Yeah.
13:52A lot different, huh?
13:53You remember how all this area here was all rusted out.
13:56It was a little nasty when you gave it to me.
13:57Oh, yeah.
13:58The motor itself was all, you know, destroyed.
14:00Yes, yeah.
14:01Now it's all been totally restored.
14:02Everything's all new again.
14:03Yeah.
14:04When he first showed me the washer, the paint job and the chroming just looks like it's
14:07brand new on it.
14:08And the rest of the machine looks like it's right off the shoulder.
14:11So you want to see the inside now?
14:13Oh, wow.
14:14Is that cool?
14:15It has a pin in it right here.
14:16You pull the pin out.
14:17It's got two positions for different loads, for a large load or a small load.
14:22You ready to wash some clothes?
14:24Try her out.
14:25All right.
14:26We got clothes?
14:27What are we going to do?
14:28Tyler's got stinky clothes on his desk.
14:29His clothes are on his desk?
14:30What do you mean?
14:31They're there, man.
14:32They stink.
14:33Go get a couple shirts.
14:34We'll wash them.
14:35It figures if there's one person with dirty clothes hanging around the shop, it'd be Tyler.
14:40That kid goes through more work shirts in one day than I do in a week sometimes.
14:45Let's take it down one notch because it's a light load.
14:48Okay, you ready?
14:49Let's fire it up.
14:55Running.
14:56Sounds good.
14:57That bucket's working.
14:58You want to see?
14:59Yeah, we can see.
15:00You ready?
15:01It's not going to go like that.
15:03Whoa!
15:04Look at that!
15:07It's cool, huh?
15:09More than I expected out of it.
15:10Thanks, Wyatt.
15:11Thank you very much.
15:12I feel really good bringing it down to Rick's to get this done and when he started it, it
15:16started right up and he got everything working fine on it.
15:18It turned out really, really good.
15:19It was awesome.
15:20What's better?
15:21Sometimes when you're doing a project, the best paint for it doesn't come in the finish that
15:33you want.
15:34That's when you've got to get creative.
15:35What's the best way to give your paint job a flat look?
15:36A. Water.

16:02The answer is coming up.
16:04Not all paint is offered in a flat look.
16:07What could you use to alter the paint?
16:10A. Water.
16:12B. Cornstarch.
16:14C. Acetone.
16:16D. Reducer.
16:17The answer is cornstarch.
16:20What you do is add a little cornstarch.
16:24You mix it up.
16:25Then when you're done and finished and you spray the product,
16:28you end up with a nice flat finish.
16:30And this will work on any paint you want to use.
16:38They are guaranteed, so go back and maybe upgrade.
16:41Maybe they'll upgrade us.
16:42Hey, babe.
16:43Hey, what's up?
16:44It's been a few days since I've been managing the money,
16:46and I think I've been doing a pretty darn good job.
16:48But I want to know what's on everybody's mind.
16:50And that's where the suggestion box comes in.
16:52Look at all these.
16:53Look at all these.
16:54Holy crap.
16:55When I put Kelly in charge of the money,
16:57I wasn't expecting a suggestion box.
16:59But by the looks of it,
17:01it looks like a lot of people got a lot on their mind.
17:03Keg of beer every Friday.
17:06Strippers once a month.
17:07Are they taking you very seriously?
17:08Apparently, they are not.
17:12What's so funny?
17:13If I go through this whole box and there's not one good one,
17:15I'm going to be very mad.
17:16The flower is dumb.
17:18Oh, that's hitting below the belt.
17:20Cowboy as manager.
17:22Oh, yeah.
17:23That will happen.
17:24Get rid of this stupid box.
17:27You know what?
17:29They're pissing me off right now.
17:31You know, I don't think I take any of this personally.
17:33I think you're doing a really good job.
17:35I think that, you know, you'll make things better,
17:37and you'll find a way.
17:38Bottom line is, Kelly does have us working more efficiently,
17:41which saves us money, and that is what counts.
17:44But as far as the suggestion box, I think that might have backfired.
17:50Tell Rick Dale he is a cheap bastard.
17:55You know, babe, that's enough of these suggestions.
17:56You know, I'm done with that.
17:58These guys are a bunch of smart asses.
18:09Take that back out.
18:10Yeah.
18:11Hey, Tim.
18:12Hey, hey.
18:13You got it?
18:14You got it.
18:15Hey, bud, how you doing?
18:16Doing good.
18:17Let's go over here.
18:18Let's do it.
18:19When I dropped off the golden arm, it was really, really sad.
18:21The wood had been chipped and broken,
18:23and there was rust everywhere,
18:25and it was pretty much a pile of junk.
18:28So you ready to see it?
18:29I'm ready.
18:30Let's do it.
18:31All right, here we go.
18:32One, two, three.
18:35Oh, wow.
18:37What do you think?
18:38That is incredible.
18:40This is going to make a lot of coins in the museum.
18:43If I walked in and I saw this, this I'd want to play.
18:48When Rick pulled off the black cover, I just, I freaked out.
18:51I couldn't believe the way the machine looked.
18:54It was like, wow, look at me.
18:56And that's what I was really looking for.
18:58On the paint job, you remember how it used to be black?
19:01It had some gold in it, but it was, it was pretty ugly.
19:03It looks like somebody did it with a can of spray paint.
19:05Right.
19:06This, this is better than new.
19:08I can see myself in the finish.
19:10And you got the, uh, the metal plate, the stand.
19:13Yeah.
19:14Yeah, we put it on a, on a plate, and we had these edges bent like this.
19:16Right.
19:17So that it would give it some height and some structure,
19:19and so now it's all nice and durable.
19:21You can get on there all day long.
19:23Then on the inside, you can see it's all been redone in there.
19:26It's all nice and new, looks good.
19:28Yeah.
19:29This is everything I thought it would be and more.
19:31Now I can't wait to get this thing back to the museum,
19:33get the public playing it.
19:35Yeah.
19:36Speaking of that, I mean, as we've been restoring this
19:37and going through the process,
19:38everybody here wants to play it and see who's the strongest.
19:41Before you take it, do you mind if we set up a little challenge?
19:44See who's stronger.
19:45To play it? Yeah, go for it.
19:47Well, I know Ron's probably up for this, right?
19:49Yeah.
19:50Ron!
19:51Who else?
19:52Bradley.
19:53I just love competitions, especially on coin-operated games,
19:56because that's what they were designed for.
19:58That's what they're built for.
20:00So, time to put your money where your mouth is,
20:02and we're going to see who's the strongest.
20:04And the loser, the loser has to dress up in a giant hot dog suit
20:09and stand out and sell hot dogs.
20:11As far as who's going to be the strongest,
20:13I think it's a no-brainer who's going to win.
20:18Who's up first?
20:19I'm up first.
20:20I'm the boss.
20:21Here we go.
20:22Okay, here we go.
20:25Oh!
20:26Holy crap.
20:27We got 325.
20:28You're somewhere between
20:29nobody better fool with your gal and world's champ.
20:32That was a lot.
20:33Go ahead, Ron.
20:34It's going to be a tough one to be.
20:36Oh, my God.
20:37Whoa!
20:38We have a new winner.
20:39Whoa!
20:40Dude, it went all the way.
20:42Oh!
20:43I knew I belonged in the zoo because I'm an animal.
20:47Yeah!
20:48Give it!
20:49Oh, yeah!
20:50I know!
20:51I agree, Du Bois.
20:52I don't get to wear the hot dog suit.
20:53That's for sure!
20:54Woo!
20:55All I know is I'm not trying to wear a hot dog suit,
20:59even if it was my idea.
21:00I'm definitely counting on Brelli to show how much of a flower child he really is here.
21:05Here we go.
21:06Here we go.
21:07Here we go.
21:08Oh, Lord.
21:09Yes!
21:10Yes!
21:11Yes!
21:12Oh!
21:13Oh!
21:14Oh!
21:15Oh!
21:16Oh!
21:17Oh!
21:18Wiener boy!
21:19Wiener boy!
21:20Oh!
21:21Oh!
21:22Son of a bitch.
21:23Hey, why don't we go ahead and try to look for a hot dog suit for a little wiener here.
21:27Yeah?
21:28Yep.
21:29I'm down.
21:30Okay.
21:31Thanks for letting us experience that.
21:32I don't know if Tyler actually loved the experience, but it was awesome doing.
21:34And I'm glad you liked it.
21:35Everything came out great.
21:36It looks fantastic.
21:37So I am one happy camper.
21:40Wiener boy!
21:42Hot dogs!
21:44Hot dogs!
21:46Hot dogs!
21:49Hot dogs!
21:50Hot dog!
21:51No?
21:52This sucks.
21:53Hot dogs!
21:54This is just not fun at all.
