00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02I never thought this day would come,
00:04but it looks like it's time to close the doors to this shop for good.
00:08But as they say, the show must go on.
00:11Brought some stuff in that you might be interested in.
00:13That's a mystery piece.
00:14Can we just turn it in and do it right now?
00:15Let's do it.
00:17Holy crap.
00:18I need you to get your truck loaded,
00:20and we're going to take it to the new shop.
00:21We've just signed the lease for a bigger place.
00:23This step that we're taking is a scary one.
00:30Remember back in the day when things were made by hand
00:34and people took pride in their work?
00:36My name's Rick Dale, and I bring these things back to life.
00:41Every restoration has its own set of challenges.
00:45There's no owner's manual for what we do,
00:48but there's no job we can't handle.
01:02Are you pulling?
01:04Yeah, it's heavy.
01:07Who's this?
01:10Hey.
01:10Well, how are you?
01:12How you been?
01:13The strength of my business depends on repeat customers.
01:16Charles runs the Santa Cruz Boardwalk,
01:18which has a bunch of old coin-op machines.
01:20I've done a few things for him already,
01:22and it's always a pleasure to see what he's got.
01:24Let's take a look here.
01:25Wow.
01:26Today, I brought down a 1900 penny scale.
01:29The machine's been at the boardwalk for close to 100 years.
01:33I'd like to get it fixed up,
01:34so it'll be there for another 100 or more years.
01:36This thing's cool.
01:37Tell me about it.
01:38Well, it used to be in the arcade,
01:39and people put a penny in here,
01:42and they'd climb on and weigh themselves.
01:43It was a big thing up until the 1950s.
01:47Right.
01:47The 30s was the heyday of these kind of things
01:50out in front of amusement parks and places like that.
01:53There's different designs.
01:54They'd call them lollipop skills,
01:55where they came up,
01:56and then they were out like that.
01:58Right.
01:58That's all they do.
02:00How much you should weigh.
02:01So you're what?
02:026'2"?
02:03188 pounds.
02:05And then women,
02:05if you were a woman,
02:06and you were, let's say,
02:07you're 5'9",
02:08150 pounds,
02:09that was average.
02:10Hold on.
02:10You tell me a woman would actually come up
02:12and pay to have her weight told?
02:14I think these were a woman's nightmare.
02:18That's probably how the glass is broken right there.
02:20She probably popped it.
02:22So how are you seeing me do this?
02:24Well, it'll be nice to have its case repaired
02:27and a blemish on the enamel fixed.
02:30When we put it out for the public to view,
02:32I'd like to have it in mint condition.
02:35What's it going to set me back?
02:38Tearing it down,
02:39I'm probably going to have three hours,
02:41four or five hours of sandblasting.
02:43We've got a lot of broken cast pieces.
02:46It's very hard welding cast.
02:47Not too many people will weld cast.
02:48No, I know that.
02:49Then we've got to go through the head mechanism.
02:52That could probably take 10 hours again.
02:55So after all that's done,
02:57putting it back together,
03:005,000.
03:01I'm going to say 5,000.
03:03That's the best you can do?
03:06Yeah, I think it is.
03:07The inside of this is like a Swiss watch.
03:09There's a million parts inside there.
03:10I want to make it nice.
03:14I think that's fair enough.
03:16Okay.
03:16Well, thank you very much for coming in.
03:17I appreciate it.
03:19After weighing all the options
03:20of getting this machine restored,
03:23I truly feel Rick's the man for the job.
03:25Cowboy!
03:26Tyler!
03:27You're up!
03:37This ain't very light, Cowboy.
03:38Tyler and Cowboy are tearing down the penny scale
03:40from the Santa Cruz boardwalk.
03:42It looks to me like it had a lock in
03:44and somebody's already drilled it out.
03:46It's going to need a lot of work inside and out.
03:48But we'll only know how much work needs to be done
03:50to the mech after we've gutted it.
03:52I'm going to pull this off the front.
03:54Okay.
03:55Pull this off the back.
04:00Ow!
04:01All right, so this should just drop.
04:07Nice.
04:10These over here look boogered up.
04:13All of them look boogered up.
04:15Cowboy, how do you spell boogered?
04:16B-O-G-G-E-R-E-D?
04:19Hmm.
04:20That doesn't seem right.
04:26Dude, this is the first time
04:28we've ever pad-wrapped, underscored stuff.
04:31I love where I work right now.
04:34It took me 15 years to build this place.
04:36But unfortunately, we're going to have to move
04:38because we've outgrown where we're at.
04:40So all this little truck's going to hold.
04:42We've just signed the lease for a bigger place.
04:44And now, we're beginning the moving process.
04:47It's going to be great,
04:48but it's also going to be a big pain in the butt.
04:50Dad, Kelly said you wanted to see us.
04:53Yeah, I need you to get your new truck loaded
04:55and we're going to take it to the new shop.
04:57Get that crappy-ass truck loaded.
04:58Quickly.
04:59Get the truck.
05:00All right.
05:02All right.
05:03All right.
05:03All right.
05:07All right.
05:09All right.
05:11All right.
05:11All right.
05:12All right.
05:13All right.
05:13All right.
05:14Here it is.
05:15Home sweet home.
05:16This step that we're taking is a scary one.
05:19But as much as I love the old shop and the way I built it,
05:22I have a huge vision for this place.
05:24And it's going to be awesome.
05:26Damn, dude.
05:27Is this it right here?
05:28This is it.
05:29This place is huge.
05:30I know.
05:31All right.
05:31And we have a good view of the strip.
05:38You made it.
05:39This place is nice.
05:41Let me give you the VIP first-time tour.
05:44This will be some of Ted's pen striping.
05:46Looks like a hospital in here.
05:48Oh, it's all clean now.
05:49Come on in here.
05:51This huge room, this is all tear down.
05:54Huge.
05:55It's way bigger.
05:56Doesn't mean you can make a mess everywhere.
05:57I want to be able to eat off the floors.
05:59Me too.
05:59Because you probably will.
06:01Yeah.
06:01Now that we all got a quick look at the new place,
06:04I'm sending Ron and Brett Lee back to the old shop
06:06to meet up with a local picker.
06:16Damn, look at this.
06:18I'm a picker from Kansas, and I came down to Rick's today
06:21to see if he was interested in anything that I'd picked up.
06:24How's it going?
06:24It's going.
06:25Brought some stuff in that you might be interested in.
06:27All right, let's go take a look.
06:29What the heck is that thing?
06:30Steel?
06:31No, it's not a steel.
06:32It's an accidentally generator.
06:34It powered the lights in your house back in the days.
06:36To tell you the truth, right off the bat,
06:38I'd say no, just because I've never seen something like it.
06:42What do we got here?
06:43Is this a dresser?
06:44That is not a dresser.
06:45That's a mystery piece.
06:46Really?
06:46A mystery piece.
06:47Mystery piece.
06:48We'll have to tear it apart, see what's in there.
06:50Can we just tear it in right now?
06:51You bet.
06:52Let's do it.
06:54I just can't wait to get in there, huh?
06:55I can, dude.
06:58So, holy crap.
06:59Look at that.
07:00It's a national cash register
07:02from 1922.
07:03It's got four drawers on it.
07:05So that means it was for a place
07:06that had different people
07:08working the same register.
07:09You got a drawer for each person
07:10so you don't miss somebody's drawer up.
07:11We got a restaurant or bar or something.
07:13Yeah.
07:14What else do you have?
07:15Well, let's step on around here.
07:17Whoa, what's that thing?
07:19What the hell?
07:21Dude, one of the coolest things I've ever seen.
07:23That would be, I believe, a baby stroller.
07:26So this has got to be probably 40s.
07:2940s.
07:30I was guessing 40s.
07:31I think we're missing some sort of kind of skid plate
07:34or a place for them to put their feet.
07:36It's still got the beads on it.
07:37Yeah, it's crazy.
07:38How much?
07:39$75 for it.
07:42We're going to have to do a lot of work to it.
07:44We've got to find parts for it,
07:45which are probably going to be a ton of money.
07:47So I would say probably 50.
07:50I'd like to sell it.
07:51I didn't drive all this way to just have you look at it.
07:55I'll tell you what, I'll give it to you for that.
07:57Nice.
07:58Considering money's tight with the move,
08:0050 bucks is all we could spend right now,
08:02and I didn't want to buy a big item that we'd have to pack up.
08:04After we're in the new shop,
08:05Mabel will buy some of Troy's bigger, more expensive stuff.
08:07You are a picker extreme.
08:10So let's go do our paperwork.
08:12Let's go get a cold one.
08:12Brett Lee, you know what you're doing.
08:16Cowboy!
08:17I don't know where you think you're going to put that.
08:18My dad is having me and Ron pack up the boneyard
08:21and move it to the new shop.
08:22Don't touch it!
08:27Before the big move,
08:28it's important to inventory everything.
08:30What the hell is this?
08:33Ron!
08:33Yeah?
08:34What is this?
08:35It's a baby straw.
08:48It's hot in here.
08:50Yes, it is.
08:52This little baby stroller is small,
08:54but it's still a pain to tear down because of all the rust.
08:56What's worse is dealing with Cowboy.
08:58He's acting like a little baby.
09:00Give me a bigger screen grabber.
09:02Plenty of pictures, all right?
09:04Yep.
09:05The bottom side and everything?
09:06Everything.
09:07What's the tray for the food?
09:08That's where they throw up.
09:10I don't want no baby around me.
09:12Come on, Cowboy.
09:14You know you love kids.
09:15There we go.
09:16Oh, you broke it.
09:17It's just jammed up in there.
09:19I guess that's what I'm here for.
09:29Before the big move, it's important to inventory everything so that we know where to put it in the new
09:33shop.
09:34That's especially important for projects that are already on the line.
09:38What the hell is this?
09:40Hey, Ron!
09:42Yeah?
09:43What is this?
09:45It's a baby straw.
09:48And you already tore it apart?
09:50Yeah.
09:51Once something is in pieces, it's very difficult to come up with a plan for the restoration.
09:56Is it all there?
09:57No.
09:58I think there's some sort of kick plate on the bottom, you know, for him to rest his feet.
10:02That wasn't there.
10:04And I imagine there's got to be some sort of handle.
10:06That wasn't there either.
10:09Well, how are we going to make the bottom of it?
10:11And how are we going to make the handle if we don't know what it looks like?
10:13Sometimes my guys are a little quick when it comes to tearing it apart,
10:16not knowing how it's going to look when it comes together.
10:19And in this case, even the best pictures in the world won't give me the correct measurements that we need
10:24for the parts that we're going to have to fabricate.
10:26Unfortunately, this has to go back together again so we can manufacture those parts.
10:31Okay.
10:32It looks good, though.
10:32Looks like a great piece.
10:34You did that one good.
10:36Cowboy!
10:38Cowboy!
10:38Yo!
10:40You and Kyle tore this down, but it was missing some pieces.
10:45So, you get to put this all back together.
10:50Thanks a lot.
10:52Want to get the door for you?
10:53I'll do that for you.
10:54I'm a good guy.
10:55Damn it, we're already busy packing up stuff.
10:57We don't need to be doing anything twice.
10:59I didn't like doing it the first time.
11:01Hope you took pictures.
11:02Kyle!
11:03It's a lot of parts.
11:16You got under control?
11:17You know, this was awesome.
11:18They put us in charge of doing all this.
11:21But I think it's just because he's cheap.
11:23My dad is having me and Ron pack up the boneyard and move it to the new shop.
11:27We want to do it in as few loads as possible, so the trailer has to be packed tight.
11:31I don't know where you think you're going to put that.
11:33No faith.
11:35All right, you bitch.
11:41Don't touch it.
11:42Let it go.
11:44I don't have it.
11:44I'm just kind of hovering.
11:46Okay?
11:47So, go.
11:48Tyler is such a typical teenager, he never wants help from anyone, which kind of makes
11:54working with him so much fun, because I get to kick back and laugh while he tries to
11:58do everything himself.
11:59You're never going to do it.
12:00I'm going to do it.
12:01You are going to squash your little ass.
12:04You still got it?
12:05Yep.
12:09Dude, you scratched it.
12:10Hey.
12:20We need to make a base for this.
12:22I kind of made this little mock-up.
12:23As long as we're going to keep it off the front wheel, we'll be good.
12:25While we move everything over to the new shop, we also have to keep cranking on the stuff already
12:30on the line.
12:31Right now, Phil and Dave are fabricating the missing pieces to the baby stroller.
12:35One of the items is a footrest, so that the toddler's feet don't scrape the ground
12:38when he's being pushed.
12:40That looks good, huh?
12:41Yeah.
12:41Yeah?
12:44Ten times more than I needed.
12:46That is fun.
12:47The other big piece that's missing is the handle.
12:50Three foot's about a good height, though, aren't you think?
12:51Yeah.
12:52Yeah, that looks really good, too.
12:53While Dave and Phil are making the metal bracing, Robert is taking care of the handle itself.
12:58When this all comes together, it's going to look like a totally new piece.
13:10Our Lock Guy Brian brought in this lock.
13:13When we got this penny scale, the lock was drilled out and useless.
13:16Our locksmith found a replacement, but it won't quite fit, so I'm going to have Dave try
13:21to make it fit by altering the panel.
13:23This is the original lock.
13:24Somebody's drilled it out.
13:25They ruined it.
13:25It's done.
13:26It used to fit like that.
13:28Right.
13:28Go in there real nice.
13:30This is the new lock.
13:31The shoulder is a different size.
13:34Looks like it's a lot longer.
13:35We've got to drill this hole out.
13:36Okay.
13:37We've got to grind these two edges out so that fits down inside.
13:40Flat, right.
13:40This is the only lock he could find.
13:43Oh, wow.
13:43Okay, so we're going to have to fit it.
13:44We've got to make it work.
13:45When you're working with items that are almost 100 years old, you don't quite have the luxury
13:49of finding parts that fit perfectly.
13:51So we work with what we have and make it fit.
14:06The baby stroller has gone a long way from being a rusted piece of junk on the back of
14:10a picker's truck.
14:11Now we're putting it together.
14:13And just in time, because a potential buyer is on their way.
14:16I'd love to sell it, because then we'll have one less thing to move.
14:20There you go.
14:26Hey, how are you?
14:27Hi, I'm Lucas.
14:28Lucas, good to see you.
14:30Nice to meet you.
14:30So you guys are here to see the stroller.
14:32Yeah, well, I'm excited to show it to you.
14:34It's over here.
14:34We came down to Rick's Restorations today to take a look at a baby stroller that he's
14:39restored.
14:39My grandma had something very similar, and I'm excited to just take a look at it.
14:44When this thing came in, I mean, it's out of the 40s, so it was really, really, it was
14:47destroyed.
14:48I mean, a lot of it was rusted out, and you can just imagine.
14:51So we did quite a bit to it.
14:53You ready to see it?
14:53Sure.
14:54You excited?
14:55Yeah.
14:55Okay, here we go.
14:58There it is.
14:59That's awesome.
15:00Look how cool that is.
15:01Check it out.
15:02Wow.
15:02It's amazing.
15:03I mean, uh...
15:04It's outstanding.
15:05To take something that old in that bad a condition and make it look brand new is unbelievable.
15:10So tell us about it.
15:11Well, it's called a tailor top, made by Taylor Manufacturing.
15:15They made strollers, walkers.
15:17This is probably in the 40s, and this was like the top-of-the-line stroller.
15:20It's very similar to the one my grandma pushed her little brother around in.
15:24These are actually the original pieces.
15:26We just went and redid it all.
15:28It's got springs on it.
15:29It's got suspension.
15:30The foot pan was actually not here at all, so we had to totally remanufacture this.
15:35She's a little big for it, but her baby sister, I think, would be able to enjoy this,
15:39and she'd probably love pushing her around in it.
15:41Well, I guess the big question is, how much do you want for it?
15:45You know, I'd like to get $1,700.
15:48$1,700.
15:49Yeah.
15:50Well, what do you think, babe?
15:52Well, I love it, but you're the final decision-maker, so.
15:56Well, I can tell she likes it and has got some memories for her.
16:00I'll tell you what.
16:01I'll give you $1,500.
16:04$1,500.
16:08You know what?
16:09Yeah.
16:10All right.
16:10We got a deal.
16:12Okay.
16:16You're a cutie.
16:17I just think it's really cool, and I can tell Elle liked it a lot.
16:20And her and her sister will be able to have a lot of fun with it.
16:22Do you want to play with that?
16:24Yeah.
16:25What would you put in there?
16:26Babies.
16:27Your babies?
16:30Charles, great to see you.
16:31Wow, good seeing you.
16:32I came here to Rick's Restoration to pick up my penny scale.
16:36Are you ready?
16:37I'm ready.
16:38Okay.
16:38One, two, three.
16:41Wow.
16:41That is gorgeous.
16:43It moves all the stuff over here.
16:44Yeah.
16:45We just got everything set up at the new shop.
16:47Now I'm going to give Ron and Tyler the grand tour.
16:49Check it out.
16:50Wow.
17:05I never thought this day would come, but it looks like it's finally time to close the
17:10doors to this shop for good.
17:12Yeah.
17:13You know, leaving the place is sad.
17:16I mean, walking across the yard and seeing it empty, it was like walking through a ghost
17:21tent and all those memories.
17:23There's been good times.
17:24There's been bad times.
17:25And, but they're all memories.
17:31And, um, and leaving is, is tough, but, but going to a new place and growing bigger and
17:38bigger, uh, you know, it's success and a success is a good thing, but you know, it's just a
17:45lot of good times.
18:02It's been an emotional day, but as they say, the show must go on.
18:06You moved all the stuff over here.
18:08Yeah.
18:09We just got everything set up at the new shop.
18:11Now I'm going to give Ron and Tyler the grand tour.
18:14Check it out.
18:15Wow.
18:16It's huge out here.
18:17It's awesome.
18:18It's a little cool.
18:18Yeah.
18:19It's about time you guys get here.
18:20Hey, babe.
18:21Do you guys like it?
18:22Love it.
18:23This is absolutely awesome.
18:24Dude, I love how you brought that shop to here.
18:27I love the feel of it.
18:29It's like home.
18:30You know, it's still got, we brought home here.
18:32As much as it pains me to leave the old shop, it feels really good to walk through this place
18:37and see everything coming together and ready for business.
18:40Each of the rooms here are about five times bigger than the old shop.
18:43So there's a lot more room for everyone to move around in.
18:46Even the boneyard is bigger and more organized.
18:49How cool is that?
18:51It's got to keep Cowboy from jumping on and going for a ride.
18:54I got a leash on him.
18:56He's in his room.
18:57He can only leave so far.
18:59So now you guys got the lay of the land.
19:00You like the place?
19:01Yeah.
19:02Love it.
19:02It's awesome.
19:03Babe, just remember, Charles with the penny scale is going to be here any minute.
19:06So we got to get that ready.
19:07All right.
19:07I need you guys to get that thing unloaded and get ready for him.
19:10All right?
19:10All right.
19:11Yeah.
19:12So you're going to unload and I'm going to watch.
19:15Bad chance, buddy.
19:29Hey, Charles.
19:29Great to see you.
19:30Wow.
19:30Good seeing you.
19:32You have some new digs down here.
19:35New digs.
19:35What do you think?
19:36I think it's super.
19:37All right.
19:38Well, guess what?
19:39You pulled into the right spot because we're right here.
19:42Oh, it's right there.
19:43Okay.
19:44I didn't even see it.
19:45I came here to Rick's Restoration to pick up my penny scale.
19:49One, two, three.
19:52Wow.
19:53That is gorgeous.
19:54When Rick pulled the veil off the machine, it really was a stunning piece of artwork that
20:00he accomplished.
20:01What do you think?
20:01That is way better than I thought.
20:05And how did you do it?
20:07All right.
20:07Well, the deal was is it came apart in a sequence.
20:11When we got it all stripped down and everything finally, we just got to town and did all the
20:14body work.
20:15It had quite a few broken pieces, so we had to weld the thing back together again.
20:19We took the porcelain face.
20:20Remember it had a big chip right here?
20:22Touched it up, clear-coated it, polished it out.
20:24It's the original face.
20:25And then we did the gold on here, which sort of matched this brass piece here.
20:29So it really, really pops.
20:31The other thing is, is it didn't have a lock in it, so we fixed the lock that's inside there.
20:35You did a great job on it, Rick.
20:37You want to try?
20:38Well, okay.
20:40No, second thought, I think you ought to get on there.
20:42All right.
20:42I don't want to break it on the first shot.
20:45See, step on.
20:47I think I was at like 200, so I've gained.
20:50Oh, wow.
20:50Well, it might be the boots.
20:53Well, Rick has brought history back with redoing his scale, and I think that a lot of folks are
20:59going to be throwing their scales out of the bathroom window.
21:01So, after we're all said and done, we're in budget, and here's your keys to your restored
21:06scale.
21:07Well, I appreciate that, and I know the people that come down to look at it will certainly
21:12enjoy seeing it.
21:13All right.
21:13Thank you very much.
21:15It's been a rollercoaster of a day, but I'm really happy that our first customer at our new
21:19shop is leaving satisfied with the work we've done.
21:22One for one, not too bad.
21:25We're going to need to clean out that area a little bit more over there.
21:28Okay.
21:28Yeah.
21:29What the?
21:32Bradley?
21:33What?
21:33What are you doing?
21:34This is Heineke.
21:36I figured she should come to the new shop, too.
21:38Can you help me out since you guys are here?
21:40I mean, she's just about in.
21:42She's just being a little stubborn.
21:44Come on, Heineke.
21:45All right.
21:46Get up here and get on that side, T. I got you.
21:48All right.
21:48You ready, Bradley?
21:49Let's get my foot out.
21:50All right.
21:50Boy, this is heavy.
21:51All right.
21:52All right.
21:53Right there.
21:54Right there?
21:55All right.
21:55All right.
21:56Let's get back to work, Tyler.
21:57Come on.
21:57We got to go.
21:58Heineke, this is your new home now.
22:00Don't expect me to feed you, though.
22:03All right.
