00:00:19good evening welcome to Champions League match of the day action from four
00:00:23quarter-final first leg ties on the way over the next hour Stephen Warnock and
00:00:28Edemanua and European football expert Rory Smith are with us we begin at the Parc de
00:00:35France holders Paris Saint-Germain up against six-time European Cup winners
00:00:39Liverpool who meet again after their epic in the round of 16 last season
00:00:58get it down he's got it down at his feet now and here comes Elliott it's a Champions League
00:01:05smash and grab it's one of those Anfield Knights Marcola looking for Dembele
00:01:30PSG have progressed from all four of their knockout stage ties against Premier League
00:01:35opponents since the start of last season can they do it again commentary comes from Guy Mowbray
00:01:42springtime in Paris perhaps just the change of scene Liverpool need to get themselves singing
00:01:48again although recent experience and current form combined to make PSG firm favourites to progress
00:01:55Marquinhos Vitinha and Jean Neves all return to the PSG lineup as the three changes from last Friday's
00:02:02three-one win in Ligue 1 against Toulouse the threatening front three is Due Dembele and
00:02:08Kvara Scalia with Bradley Barcola not yet ready to return from a hamstring injury for Liverpool Alexis
00:02:14McAllister replaces Curtis Jones and Jeremy Frimpong comes in too at most Salah's expense Salah on the
00:02:21bench along with Alexander Isak who's involved for the first time since breaking his leg at Spurs in
00:02:27December a moment pre-match to pay respects to the great Romanian coach
00:02:32Michir Luchescu who passed away this week at the age of 80
00:02:49question marks about the system that Liverpool would be employing tonight but it is very much a back five with
00:02:55Joe Gomez on the left of the three in the middle that means Frimpong will be fully engaged with
00:03:01Kvara Scalia down the right
00:03:04Vitinha
00:03:06the player he's grown into
00:03:09that spell he had at Wolves
00:03:12that's the ball again courtesy of Desiree Due
00:03:16now it's Dembele run through one challenge Due
00:03:23might have a chance to curl one in and it is in
00:03:29looping over Mamadashvili
00:03:35got away from Kanate and Frimpong
00:03:40still doesn't seem too much danger when the ball came back to him he's got so much to do from
00:03:45here
00:03:45there is no way through but one pirouette later and he found a way
00:03:52must have taken a nick it does a big one that's what deceived Mamadashvili
00:03:56came off the heel of Gravenberg
00:03:59PSG 1 Liverpool 0
00:04:05Rana Slott was talking about the opening 35 minutes at Manchester City in their
00:04:104-0 FA Cup defeat at the weekend
00:04:13saying that showed they can match any of the best teams around
00:04:17it went wrong for them as the game went on in Manchester
00:04:20it's going wrong for them from the start in Paris
00:04:24it's a looping throw in
00:04:25Dijk tried to get to it
00:04:27Saphanov got above him with his hands and puts it behind
00:04:33Gravenberg is on the ball
00:04:36Virgil van Dijk is urgently trying to get some sort of instruction to him
00:04:41short corner to Vietz was the call that's a really good ball
00:04:44Saphanov has to fly and stretch out his arm
00:04:50Isaiah Emery and he got away from the tackle only to poke the ball out of play
00:04:56well worked by Liverpool
00:04:57and credit to Saphanov because Kyrkhez and Van Dijk were both primed to try and bundle that home
00:05:05Duet
00:05:06shuffling the ball from foot to foot
00:05:09can't get through to cause a problem
00:05:11but there's Kvanskelia
00:05:13saved by his international teammate Mamadashvili
00:05:18pretty good save
00:05:20one he'd expect to make
00:05:27that makes it an even better save from Mamadashvili because it comes off the back side of Mac Alistair
00:05:34Pitino
00:05:40what a ball that is for Nuno Mendes and he's got Desiree Duet with him
00:05:44Duet
00:05:46Mamadashvili makes a good block
00:05:48Duet really ought to have doubled his tally
00:05:51Duet conscious that Canate was closing decided he had to take it early
00:05:58Viertz, Frimpong what a good ball from Viertz and Frimpong went for power just trying to blitz it across to
00:06:05that far post
00:06:06just trying to blitz it across to that far post sizing up his options having a look
00:06:09I think the shot was the best bet it's a lovely ball from Florian Viertz
00:06:14that's how you take it
00:06:21Nuno Mendes
00:06:23PSG are bouncing the ball through here it's Kvanskelia
00:06:27and now it's Duet who checks and now it's Dembele who scuffed it
00:06:33a tame one straight at Mamadashvili
00:06:35from trying to keep PSG in their own half
00:06:38Liverpool opened up by Paris Saint-Germain rather playfully getting the ball forward
00:06:43they just lost that bit of rhythm when it mattered in the penalty area
00:06:48I think most were expecting it to be 2-0 right there
00:07:01Calister is headed that one straight to Kvanskelia
00:07:05it's pulled back for Dembele! Too high!
00:07:10Huge chance
00:07:13McAllister off the hook, that was so casual, so careless,
00:07:17but I think you could say the same about Dembele's finish.
00:07:21Liverpool are being warned, they're being shouted at,
00:07:24but it remains at one.
00:07:27That's Kanate looking for Ekotike,
00:07:30and Saphanov comes out to use his head, and that means he's missing from the goal.
00:07:35Marquinhos, and the flag goes up, and I rather thought it might.
00:07:38Ekotike looked offside in the first instance,
00:07:41but Saphanov wasn't standing on ceremony to find out.
00:07:45Actually, I don't think he was, I think Marquinhos is playing him on.
00:07:53That's Kalia.
00:07:57Getting the return, and getting in.
00:08:00Kalia keeps his feet.
00:08:02Oh, that's magnificent.
00:08:05What a player he is.
00:08:09PSG 2, Liverpool 0.
00:08:12Another glorious goal from the player whose name you're never likely to forget.
00:08:18A player you wouldn't mind watching every single week of the year.
00:08:23And all the work that Liverpool have done to keep themselves in it, keep it to one,
00:08:28has been undone.
00:08:30Wasn't all his own work.
00:08:32Chou Neves deserves a huge share of the praise.
00:08:35He's not bad either.
00:08:37But then Kvaletskalia was strong enough to hold off the challenge, ignoring Gravenberg.
00:08:43Riding that out, single-minded, focused on simply sidestepping his international colleague Mamadashvili.
00:08:51And then it's a tap in.
00:08:54PSG 2, Liverpool 0.
00:08:59De Bele.
00:09:00And it's starting to flow once more.
00:09:04Douai.
00:09:05Hakimi's up there.
00:09:07Zaire Emery with a break into the box, here he is!
00:09:09Zaire Emery!
00:09:10Was he fouled by Canate?
00:09:12Referee says, yes he was.
00:09:16This could be the moment that doesn't just take tonight away from Liverpool, it takes the tie away.
00:09:24Zaire Emery getting himself ready to shoot.
00:09:28Canate has to make the challenge to stop him.
00:09:31He actually takes the ball cleanly.
00:09:33It might not be given.
00:09:35But Carlos Delcero Grande in VAR has clearly decided he doesn't think it should be a penalty.
00:09:41So has called Jose Maria Sanchez over to have another look for himself.
00:09:45The ball was certainly won, no doubt about that.
00:09:49Generally in European football, when you see any sort of contact with the leg first,
00:09:52you kind of think, well, the decision's going to stay as it is.
00:09:55But I don't think Canate's challenge, actually, was enough to cause the lack of balance.
00:10:02It's not going to be a penalty.
00:10:05And it stays 2-0.
00:10:07And if I said that could be the moment that takes it away from Liverpool,
00:10:11by the same token, it could be the big moment that means they're still right in this.
00:10:18It's Nuno Mendes.
00:10:20Mendes is able to pull it back.
00:10:24No immediate threat yet.
00:10:25Well, you wouldn't think so.
00:10:27But here's Dembele, that could change quickly.
00:10:30Dembele to Hakimi!
00:10:31Good save, Dembele again.
00:10:34Comes off Robertson and goes behind.
00:10:37Mamadashvili has played pretty well in Alisson's absence.
00:10:42Yeah, PSG have been the better team, there's no denying that.
00:10:45But one or two breaks have not gone Liverpool's way.
00:10:50Misjudged by Krimpock, Dembele will carry until he has help.
00:10:56He's got it now from Lee.
00:10:59Lee, back to Dembele!
00:11:02Outside of the post.
00:11:09He catches that just a split second before he does.
00:11:13The timing's just slightly different.
00:11:15That rips into the top of the net.
00:11:25Now here's Hakimi running away from Virgil van Dijk.
00:11:30And the ball has run away as well.
00:11:33Still the chance for Clarence Kalia.
00:11:37The way that was worked, Hakimi just kept on running.
00:11:42And Nuno Mendes lost his feet.
00:11:45William Patcher.
00:11:48Nuno Mendes.
00:11:50Leaving Canate behind.
00:11:53Was he pushed there, Nuno Mendes?
00:11:55Was there an arm in his back?
00:11:56Jose Maria Sanchez doesn't think so.
00:11:59The check's over.
00:12:01Sold as seen.
00:12:02Stays 2-0.
00:12:04If anything, that looked more of a penalty than the one that Jose Maria Sanchez initially awarded.
00:12:09The referee blows for full-time.
00:12:11A greeting between Arnes Locke and Luis Enrique.
00:12:16The Spanish manager of PSG will have more reason to be full of smiles when he takes to his bed
00:12:21tonight.
00:12:22Full-time in the first leg of the quarter-final.
00:12:25And it's Paris Saint-Germain 2, Liverpool 0.
00:12:29We were in survival mode for large parts of the game.
00:12:36But maybe also in the period of the season where we were in, we were in survival mode.
00:12:40So to try to say, to find ways where we can try to make sure that their qualities are not
00:12:49seen that much.
00:12:50But that's really, really, really hard against this team because last season over here we were in survival mode as
00:12:54well.
00:12:55We have to be absolutely spot on with everything we do.
00:13:00Hopefully our fans can play a big part in that as well.
00:13:03I've been through many special evenings at Anfield and I'm very lucky and privileged.
00:13:08And our fans, you know, that's the backbone of the club and hopefully they can be there for us again.
00:13:15Today they changed their formation to play against us and it means that they were thinking about trying to combat
00:13:24us.
00:13:25But I think it was a great match, nice to watch and at the end the difference could be the
00:13:33small details.
00:13:34And I think first half it was more equal but the second half we created a lot of more.
00:13:40Well, we'll talk about Liverpool and that change in shape that Luis Enrique refers to there in a moment.
00:13:45But I think we should start by waxing lyrical and giving you the floor, Nadem.
00:13:49You can start with Kravitz Scalier's goal which came after a minute and 24 seconds of possession.
00:13:54Yes, and it was absolutely incredible.
00:13:56You know, we're talking about one of the best forwards in European and world football.
00:13:59But what I like is the fact that he's obviously great with the ball at his feet but he's prepared
00:14:02to run without it as well.
00:14:03And I must say that ball from Jar Gomez there through the legs, that's incredible.
00:14:07But the poise here, the balance, the strength and the composure, it's an incredible moment from somebody who's been an
00:14:13incredible player for PSG.
00:14:14I think you can see here, Sabah's lies with him, but as soon as you turn your back and you
00:14:17don't pay attention, you can be punished.
00:14:19Again, the level of quality we're talking about here is as high as it comes, it's as good as it
00:14:23comes.
00:14:24But still, what a player. Look here, look at these challenges, look at the strength.
00:14:29The fact that he didn't go down there under the tackle from Gravenbirch, hugely impressive.
00:14:32And then as soon as he gets through, you know exactly what's going to happen.
00:14:34He's an amazing player and really is blessed in this stage of the Champions League.
00:14:38Yeah, when they signed him, which was January last year from Napoli, I was slightly, not baffled, but they seem
00:14:43to have plenty of strength in that area.
00:14:44Dway, Barcoller, who was injured tonight, obviously Dembele.
00:14:47And he sort of thought, well, it's a lot of money to spend on someone who's like an option.
00:14:51But he kind of sums up this PSG, doesn't he? Because he's got that wonderful technical ability.
00:14:55But he's also got a really virtuoso streak for Australia. He does things you don't expect.
00:14:59He does things in positions where you sort of want to see him do one thing, he does something completely
00:15:04different.
00:15:05And I think that makes him really hard to defend.
00:15:06But his energy levels, his industry, he worked so hard and they're the virtues that this PSG team has.
00:15:12He's kind of an un-flashy-flashy player, isn't he? Because of that work rate.
00:15:16You know, sometimes you don't always kind of notice him.
00:15:19And then he comes with the most beautiful and sublime moments in a game.
00:15:23He's mesmerising.
00:15:25Liverpool not so mesmerising tonight.
00:15:28He mentioned there, Luis Enrique, they changed their formation for us.
00:15:32Slott was talking there quite negatively in a way about their performance.
00:15:37And he later said as well in an interview that they were lucky to get away with 2-0.
00:15:40This was about damage limitation.
00:15:42Yeah, 100%.
00:15:43Well, Liverpool are in a position at the moment where confidence is low.
00:15:46When you watch them every game, it's like a basketball game.
00:15:49The one thing that they were scared of here was, and that was the word, they were scared of Paris
00:15:53Saint-Germain and the quality.
00:15:54So what did they think they could do?
00:15:55They could go with a five at the back.
00:15:57They've got Gomez on that left-hand side.
00:15:59You've got the two full-backs, or wing-backs, Kerkhez and Fringpong.
00:16:02But they're looking to press high, and this drags Canate into positions that he doesn't want to go into.
00:16:09He doesn't want to be a right full-back.
00:16:11And this is their right full-back, Hakimi, who's popping up in the left-wing position.
00:16:15That's the fluidity of Paris Saint-Germain.
00:16:17That's how they go forward.
00:16:18It's an opportunity here, which just breaks down with that moment of quality in the final third.
00:16:23And this is where they've become a little bit disjointed, Liverpool.
00:16:26And again, it's Canate getting dragged out to that right-hand side.
00:16:29You can just see the ball in behind now, because Gomez is dropping deep.
00:16:34He's beyond, or he's deeper than Canate and Van Dijk.
00:16:37And now there's a real issue, because they've got the run on them as it comes into Douay here.
00:16:42Perhaps should do better.
00:16:43It's a good save from Mamedashvili, who I thought would have played really well on the night.
00:16:46But this is the problem now.
00:16:47When you break, and this is unbelievable play from Paris Saint-Germain, this is what they can do to you.
00:16:52A little bump around the corner on the chest, the one-touch football in behind.
00:16:57Very difficult to play against.
00:16:58And as it falls to Dembele at the back post, you're thinking, perfect man to hit it.
00:17:02Left foot just doesn't get hold of it at all.
00:17:05It's a poor finish.
00:17:06But they were so confident in drawing Liverpool out of position.
00:17:10And this is the right-back again.
00:17:11Hakimi just continues his run.
00:17:13You'll see it here, in behind.
00:17:14Van Dijk gets sucked into that middle position.
00:17:16Mendes, he is a left-back, but he moved into the left mid position later on in the game.
00:17:21They should have wrapped it up.
00:17:22They should have been three or four ahead.
00:17:24They are such a dangerous team.
00:17:26And it doesn't matter how you set up against them, they will pull you out of position.
00:17:31It's just three shots for Liverpool, none on target.
00:17:34And it's the first time they haven't had a shot on target in the Champions League in five and a
00:17:37half years.
00:17:38And the goal fair in those stats, actually possession was as high as 82% for PSG, wasn't it, at
00:17:43times, really tells a story, Rory.
00:17:46Yeah, I don't think anyone sets up to be that dominated in a game.
00:17:51I suppose from Slott's perspective, you'd say, well, two goals, they're still in the tie.
00:17:57I'm not, I certainly don't know enough about football to say he could have done this and it would have
00:18:01worked out better.
00:18:01Maybe Nadam and Stephen do.
00:18:03You're the European Football Expo, my friend.
00:18:04That is true, but even so, you know, if you go toe-to-toe with PSG, they'll beat you.
00:18:09If you do basically anything in its PSG, if they're on it, they will beat you.
00:18:12The argument would be though, Rory, and from Liverpool fans, is they've just spent £450 million.
00:18:19So there should be improvements.
00:18:21Now, I know Isak's been injured for long periods, but you've bought a player who's injury-prone.
00:18:26So what are you expecting from him all of a sudden?
00:18:28I know it was one of those tackles that it can happen, but the gulf shouldn't be as big as
00:18:33it is at the moment.
00:18:34And I think that's the biggest concern for Liverpool fans.
00:18:37Yeah, I've got to say as well, listening to what Arna Slott was saying after the game,
00:18:40he's talking about a side being in survival mode, not just for this game, but for this part of the
00:18:44season.
00:18:45You know, we're in the final stages of the Champions League and that's where one side is.
00:18:49It doesn't feel right to me, to be honest.
00:18:50There does seem to be a gulf in even the identity of this team, the team that played in the
00:18:55round of 16 last year and this year,
00:18:58and where they're going and what they're about and how Arna Slott is taking them forwards.
00:19:04And if you have a look at his own record with Liverpool in terms of last season to this season,
00:19:09there tonight was the 16th loss of the season.
00:19:12There were only nine in the whole of last season, win percentage dramatically down.
00:19:17Yeah, the other problem is, since they got knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield last season,
00:19:21they've lost 21 games in 59 games.
00:19:26That's incredible.
00:19:27For a team of Liverpool's quality and what we...
00:19:30You're talking about the Premier League champions from last season, it's not good enough.
00:19:34And I think there's obviously issues whether the players believe in what's going on,
00:19:38whether the board think he's the right man to turn things around.
00:19:41I just don't know where Liverpool are at at this moment in time in terms of what they're going to
00:19:46do with the manager.
00:19:47But tonight, they have got an opportunity to put things right because at 2-0, it could have been 4
00:19:53-5 and 6,
00:19:54but at 2-0, like Virgil van Dijk spoke about there, you go back to Anfield, anything can happen.
00:19:592-0 is a good scoreline to take back, but it also means that Liverpool are going to have to
00:20:03go for it, aren't they?
00:20:04Yeah, that is... PSU will be thinking, I really hope you come out and play next time, lads,
00:20:07because I suspect there'll be space there.
00:20:09I think Slott needs a performance as much as anything else because the results are bad, as Steven has made
00:20:15clear.
00:20:15You can't go out at Anfield playing five at the back.
00:20:18They have to give a performance, they have to go out on their shields rather than sitting back and accepting
00:20:24it.
00:20:24Otherwise, you suspect the stadium might turn a little bit.
00:20:27OK, thank you very much for the moment.
00:20:29Arsenal's trip to sporting is still to come, along with Real Madrid against Bayern Munich.
00:20:33But staying with tonight's action, we head to camp now for an intriguing All La Liga match-up
00:20:38between five-time winners Barcelona and three-time finalists Atletico Madrid.
00:20:44On paper, it's Barcelona who lead the way against Atletico Madrid.
00:20:47Atleti kept many stars on the bench at the Metropolitano this weekend,
00:20:51but the Catalan's win opened up a 19-point gap with Simeone's team
00:20:56and a seven-point gap with Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.
00:21:00But here's the warning.
00:21:01Atleti not only knocked Barca out of the Spanish Cup this season,
00:21:05they've also eliminated Barca twice before at the quarter-final stage in 2014 and 2016.
00:21:19They both suffer from defensive problems, while Barca's attack has been relentless,
00:21:2419 goals in the last four games.
00:21:27Both sides are averaging well over two goals per game in this competition.
00:21:31So, will it be a hat-trick of quarter-final wins for Atleti or third-time lucky for Atletico Madrid?
00:21:40It's all set up very nicely indeed for your commentator, Mark Scott.
00:21:44Rather than familiarity, breeding contempt, the niggly Barca win at the weekend
00:21:50and Atleti's recent Roller Coaster Cup semi-final success
00:21:54means the fifth meeting of the season between these two is eagerly anticipated.
00:22:01Having scored in the win at Atleti a few days ago,
00:22:05Marcus Rashford keeps his place in the Barca side, with Robert Lewandowski coming in up top.
00:22:11They're still without Rafinha due to injury.
00:22:15Having wrested some of his big guns for that domestic defeat on Saturday,
00:22:19it's back to the familiar Simeone side tonight,
00:22:22with ex-Farca man Anton Griezmann partnered by Atleti's Champions League man Julian Alvarez,
00:22:29who's scored eight in the competition this season.
00:22:38That's a loose pass.
00:22:39Jamal forwards for Rashford!
00:22:43That's a big chance.
00:22:46And Marcus Rashford knows that he should really have done better with it.
00:22:52Straightforward enough save for Van Moussa to make.
00:22:55He knows that should be 1-0.
00:23:00Alvarez.
00:23:05Oh, that's a really good run by Simeone, and was he caught?
00:23:10Referee says free kick, and what colour is the card here?
00:23:15It's a yellow.
00:23:17Well, once he gave the foul, you expected that a red would follow for denial of a goal-scoring opportunity.
00:23:28But he's been told to go to the monitor.
00:23:32The yellow is scrubbed.
00:23:35The red is out, and Barcelona are down to ten men.
00:23:46Jubilation in the away end.
00:23:48Jubilation in the away end.
00:24:00Is there further joy for Atletico from the free kick?
00:24:04Alvarez!
00:24:05Oh, my word!
00:24:06It's an absolute beauty!
00:24:10Julian Alvarez doing the business in the Champions League once again.
00:24:17What a few minutes for Atleti.
00:24:20They see Barca go down to ten.
00:24:23And then they see Alvarez curling a humdinger.
00:24:28Red hot in the competition this season, Julian Alvarez.
00:24:33And it was a scorching hit from the Argentinian here.
00:24:37Pace, power, placement, it's got it all.
00:24:41And Joan Garcia couldn't get anything on it.
00:24:44A pivotal couple of minutes in this Champions League quarterfinal.
00:24:56Here's Cancelo.
00:25:00That's a lovely pass, Rashford.
00:25:03Round the keeper, can he get it in? No.
00:25:06Created wonderfully by Lavin Yamal,
00:25:09but not quite finished off by Marcus Rashford.
00:25:12It's an absolute peach of a pass, isn't it?
00:25:16Rashford's first touch, perhaps just a tiny bit heavy,
00:25:19which meant that the angle was always decreasing.
00:25:25Misman, and then that's a loose ball from Llorente.
00:25:29Yamal onto it.
00:25:30And Lamine Yamal is crunched there by Robin Lenormand.
00:25:34They're going to get a free kick.
00:25:35Barcelona wants some further punishment.
00:25:39Well, Alvarez scored a beauty from similar distance in the first half.
00:25:44What can Rashford provide here?
00:25:47Oh, it's a good try!
00:25:49And it's off the bar.
00:25:52Almost another sensational free kick scored down at that end.
00:26:07Well, Barcelona's saying that the ball was already set for the goal kick here, and then that is a handball.
00:26:15That is what both the players and the fans were unhappy about.
00:26:22At the moment it feels like Atletico are playing with a man less.
00:26:27Barcelona monopolising possession.
00:26:31Yamal.
00:26:32That'll reach Rashford.
00:26:34He's done very well.
00:26:38He's hoping for a corner, which he's won.
00:26:42There's always a chance it'll turn into a real strap when you're up against Simeone's Atletico.
00:26:46And Barcelona have shown that they are up for the fight.
00:26:52Flicked across, oh, how did that not go in?
00:26:54Dani Olmo caught on his heels.
00:26:59Well, the near-post flick from Gabi was excellent.
00:27:03Agonising.
00:27:06Agonising.
00:27:07Gurette.
00:27:11Atletico might have just weathered that storm at the start of the second half from Barcelona.
00:27:22Griezmann pushes it forward through Sherry's.
00:27:24Ball!
00:27:25Oh, 2-0!
00:27:28Alexander Ceylon!
00:27:30And what a hammer blow that is for Barcelona!
00:27:35They've had to soak up pressure, but there's the sucker punch.
00:27:39The substitute, Serloch, scores.
00:27:42And Atletico Madrid have a massive chance of making it to the semi-finals now.
00:27:52Gio Cancelo got enough loft on that.
00:27:56Oh, but they've got it back here.
00:27:58Gio Cancelo rides one challenge and hits the post.
00:28:03That's just Barcelona's luck this evening.
00:28:06They have had a handful of chances, but haven't been able to make any count.
00:28:15Firmin Lopez.
00:28:20Lavinia Mal.
00:28:22Can he do something here?
00:28:25Still going, Lavinia Mal!
00:28:27Just denied at the last.
00:28:31He is desperate to try and drag his side back into the equation.
00:28:36And he dragged the ball through a cluster of red and white shirts.
00:28:41That's been the story of the night for Barcelona.
00:28:43A series of nearly moments.
00:28:47The situation is also when the goalkeeper plays the ball and he touches it with the hand.
00:28:52Come on, it's clear.
00:28:54In the VAR, I don't know why he doesn't call.
00:28:59I'm not sure why.
00:29:00So, he's a German guy.
00:29:02Hello.
00:29:02It's unbelievable.
00:29:04It's unbelievable.
00:29:05It's unbelievable.
00:29:05Are you angry with the referee?
00:29:07No, I'm not.
00:29:08This situation, okay?
00:29:09We all make mistakes.
00:29:10It's normal.
00:29:11We make mistakes.
00:29:12But this situation.
00:29:14Why we have a VAR?
00:29:15Why?
00:29:16Why we have a VAR?
00:29:17And this is...
00:29:18I cannot understand.
00:29:19Because normally, it's a penalty and a red card.
00:29:21Double yellow is red.
00:29:24He's angry about a penalty that wasn't awarded.
00:29:26But actually, the game really did turn on a penalty that was.
00:29:30Oh, yeah.
00:29:30The red card was massive in this game.
00:29:32Sorry, the red card.
00:29:33Sorry, yeah.
00:29:33The red card was massive in this game.
00:29:35Pre-kick.
00:29:35Because Barcelona, for the most part...
00:29:36To be honest, given the fact that he scored, it might as well have been a penalty anyway.
00:29:39Yeah, yeah.
00:29:40But I think it was very, very impressive in terms of how that kind of changed the game for Atleti.
00:29:44Because it gave them some belief.
00:29:45Because before that, they were quite poor.
00:29:46But the way that Barcelona play, they afford you a lot of space in behind.
00:29:49And Simeone's making a great run.
00:29:51And unfortunately for Kubati, the centre-half, legs have been tangled.
00:29:54There's no intent to try and make a tackle there.
00:29:56But from the moment he does, it felt to us like it was going to be a clear sending off.
00:30:01Initially, he only got a yellow card.
00:30:02And he's unfortunate.
00:30:03He's trying his best to get back into position.
00:30:05But you've just got to be a little bit more careful in terms of how you run.
00:30:08But that's a tough one.
00:30:09First teenager to be sent off twice in the Champions League,
00:30:12while still a teenager sent off against Benfica last year.
00:30:15But that was...
00:30:15This free-kick from Julian Alvarez.
00:30:18Like I said, it might as well be a penalty.
00:30:19The way that he takes his free kicks, that is as clean as you like.
00:30:23And I'll say to the boys before, I've never felt that feeling before.
00:30:26To connect to the ball like that.
00:30:27That is truly one of the best finishes you'll see.
00:30:30The direction of travel before that, in the first 44 minutes,
00:30:33was Barcelona, as always, attacking with intent.
00:30:36And it was Marcus Rashford who was getting on the end of the best chances.
00:30:39Yeah, I mean, he's just a brilliant player, isn't he?
00:30:41I think what he's done since he's gone to Barcelona is he's found his form.
00:30:44I think he's found a happy place where he's enjoying his football.
00:30:48I actually think he should do better in this position as it comes into him.
00:30:51With that acceleration, touch just gets caught under him ever so slightly,
00:30:54and the strike isn't quite as clean.
00:30:57But his movement's brilliant at the moment because what you want from a winger,
00:31:01the opposing side, is to get in the box, get opportunities.
00:31:04Maybe he can take that down, but he's so confident in himself
00:31:06that he wants to take that shot on first time.
00:31:09Again, arriving at the back post, great goal.
00:31:12That's exactly what you're after.
00:31:13Hansi Flick will be delighted with that.
00:31:15But when you're a fullback and you're playing against someone who's got pace,
00:31:19who can time his runs well and know that he can use that pace,
00:31:23he's so dangerous in behind.
00:31:25Here, again, maybe just a little bit more composure,
00:31:28but that confidence that he's got in himself, he's taking everything on.
00:31:32And you're thinking, he's playing alongside Jamal.
00:31:33He's the one who's over free kicks.
00:31:35He's the one who's trying to be on the ascendancy, on the front foot,
00:31:39taking people on.
00:31:40I think you can see a huge change in character, in personality,
00:31:44in confidence from an outstanding footballer.
00:31:48And I think from Thomas Tuchel's point of view,
00:31:50I think it's the best thing that's happened for him this year,
00:31:52because it gives him another option in four positions going into the World Cup.
00:31:56Yeah, it is an area, isn't it, that is a problem for him.
00:32:00And we know where he was somewhere else this week in the Champions League,
00:32:02of course, Thomas Tuchel.
00:32:03But he had his eye all over that performance.
00:32:06Diego Simeone finally getting his win as a manager at the camp now.
00:32:11And it's been 20 years since Atletico have actually had a win there.
00:32:15Yeah, he'd only just left as a player when they last won.
00:32:17I think there's 18 attempts that he's had at camp now to win.
00:32:20He won at Montjuic when they were playing, when they were renovating the stadium.
00:32:24So that kind of spoils it a little bit, so we're going to ignore it.
00:32:28But yeah, 18 attempts at camp now.
00:32:30And they've played each other five times already this season,
00:32:32Barcelona Atleti.
00:32:33It's been relatively evenly balanced.
00:32:35But that one, that's a really big one.
00:32:36There is this question mark over whether this might be Simeone's last season
00:32:40at Atletico Madrid, as unthinkable as it is.
00:32:42I feel like we've said this before.
00:32:43Yeah, he's been fluttering his eyelashes a little bit into Milan.
00:32:46But he does do that occasionally.
00:32:48And there's been a lot of changes behind the scenes at Atletico.
00:32:50They've got American ownership now.
00:32:51You wonder if he might think that, what, 15 years is enough?
00:32:55If he could get them to the semi-finals, maybe even to the final,
00:32:58that would be...
00:32:59That's the one thing he's not done.
00:33:01He's been really close before, but that's the kind of...
00:33:03Well, the Omens are not with Barcelona, are they?
00:33:06Because when they've lost their first leg the last three times
00:33:08in two-legged ties, they've not won the tie.
00:33:11So, who knows?
00:33:13Could be his year.
00:33:13OK.
00:33:13Premier League leaders Arsenal travelled to Lisbon
00:33:16on the back of two straight defeats, first in the League Cup final
00:33:20and then at Southampton in Saturday's FA Cup quarterfinal.
00:33:23Mikel Arteta's side took on Sporting,
00:33:25who've won five out of five at home in this season's Champions League.
00:33:28Commentary comes from Stephen Wilson.
00:33:32Those five Sporting wins here this season include one over PSG,
00:33:37so Arsenal would do well to be wary against the club
00:33:41which ended their 2013 Europa League campaign.
00:33:44Though in last season's Champions League,
00:33:47Arsenal won here 5-1.
00:33:50Sporting captain Morten Kuhlmann is suspended
00:33:52and replaced by João Simoes.
00:33:55Still no timber, Eze Osaka for Arsenal.
00:33:58Madwekir Trossard at either side of Victor Jokeres,
00:34:01who returns to Sporting, for whom he scored 97 times
00:34:06in just 102 games.
00:34:12Arsenal from left to right in the first half.
00:34:19Outside of the boot passes, brilliant,
00:34:21and here's an opportunity.
00:34:23Great save.
00:34:29What a pass that is.
00:34:31That is an extraordinary ball from Diamant.
00:34:35Araujo really caught it.
00:34:37There's definitely a little touch from Dabby Dreyer.
00:34:47Odegaard.
00:34:51And Reike fouled by Maxi Araujo.
00:34:56It's going to be a free kick to Arsenal in a good position.
00:35:04Odegaard's delivery.
00:35:06Oh, goodness me.
00:35:08Well, that really could have gone anywhere.
00:35:12Jokeres gets a touch on this, and Diamand as well.
00:35:21Oh, and it's come off the crossbar.
00:35:24And Odegaard!
00:35:26Well, Madweke's corner is straight onto the face of the bar.
00:35:30No one gets a touch on that.
00:35:39Gabriel.
00:35:42Look, Ores, just about onside.
00:35:46And the charge sneaks in!
00:35:52Zubimendi puts it in the back of the sporting net for Arsenal.
00:35:56Oh!
00:35:58Well, there's going to be a check here.
00:36:01Now, as this ball is played into Jokeres,
00:36:05he has to be in an offside position.
00:36:07I'm surprised that isn't given in normal play, to be honest with you.
00:36:13Zubimendi puts it in the back of the net quite beautifully, actually.
00:36:18But it's offside.
00:36:27Ivan Fresneda.
00:36:34Suarez.
00:36:35Oh, he's done well to get away from Calafiore,
00:36:38and the head has chipped around!
00:36:41Really good play by Suarez.
00:36:43Catomo gets himself into a good position.
00:36:46And David Raya had to adjust quickly.
00:36:57Martinelli!
00:36:58Well, watched by Rui Silva.
00:37:01Decent hit by Gabriel Martinelli, this.
00:37:11Might be a break on here.
00:37:14Jenny Catomo.
00:37:15He's got three square of him.
00:37:17Catomo!
00:37:18And saved by Raya!
00:37:20And Suarez can't bundle it over the line.
00:37:23It's a good piece of goalkeeping by David Raya, that.
00:37:27He saved the first effort, couldn't hold it,
00:37:30but then he did really well to prevent Luis Suarez from putting away the rebound.
00:37:44Martinelli's done well.
00:37:45Martinelli clips a great ball in,
00:37:47and Arsenal have won it right at the end.
00:37:50Kai Havertz scores a brilliant goal.
00:37:53Gabriel Martinelli with some genius.
00:37:58And Kai Havertz applies the finish.
00:38:01And Arsenal take the lead in stoppage time at the end of the first leg.
00:38:06There'd be no offside flag here.
00:38:09It's a brilliant ball into Havertz and such a composed finish.
00:38:14Sporting nil, Arsenal one.
00:38:17He loves the big occasions and the big games.
00:38:19And that's what we need, the big players to turn up when we need them
00:38:22and to win us again.
00:38:25At the moment, he's phenomenal.
00:38:27He's been extraordinary since he's joined us,
00:38:29and we are very lucky to have him.
00:38:31It's half-time.
00:38:32We had a step closer.
00:38:34Now we need to finish the tie at home in front of our people,
00:38:37and if we do that, we're going to start to dream.
00:38:41Well, it was the fourth time that Arsenal subs have combined
00:38:44in the Champions League this season to score a goal,
00:38:46a very important goal.
00:38:48And we'll get into the strength and depth of this squad.
00:38:51But, you know, it just shows you exactly why they've strengthened
00:38:55in the way they have.
00:38:56100%. I think in years gone by, we've seen them fall off quite a little bit
00:38:59once you start making some of those substitutions.
00:39:01But these guys are proving to be key for them,
00:39:02not just in this game, but throughout the season.
00:39:04As you can see here, this is the 91st minute of the game
00:39:06and the energy of Martinelli, and then the composure of Kai Havertz.
00:39:09What a great touch that was.
00:39:11And then to finish it in that manner,
00:39:12that feels like a huge goal for the tie,
00:39:15and arguably just for Arsenal in general,
00:39:16given the fact they've lost their two previous games.
00:39:18And that's what you want when you look at those players
00:39:20coming off the bench for you.
00:39:21If you're Arteta, if you're the fans,
00:39:23if you're other teammates on the pitch,
00:39:24you want them to have an impact.
00:39:25You don't want them to just be coming on and doing the same thing.
00:39:27And they've managed to do that.
00:39:29And as we say, that's such a...
00:39:30Well, we don't know yet, but it feels like a hugely significant goal
00:39:34for them in this moment.
00:39:35Especially coming off the back of the results that they had.
00:39:38And they now have the most goals and assists by substitutes
00:39:41in Europe's big five leagues.
00:39:44And, you know, when you look at the players
00:39:46that are in those teams below them,
00:39:48and PSG actually had got a really good record themselves,
00:39:50hadn't they, of bringing players off the bench
00:39:52and making a difference.
00:39:54It's why they are many people's favourites still in this competition.
00:39:57Yeah, I think that was the big thing, was how can you affect a game?
00:40:00If Saka's not playing well, you can bring on Marrueke.
00:40:02If Martinelli's not playing on you, you have Trossard and vice versa.
00:40:06And then centre-forward position, you've got Jokeres, Jesus, Havertz.
00:40:10So there's plenty of options in those forward areas.
00:40:12But there's also good options in midfield as well.
00:40:15Creativity, stopping the game.
00:40:17You've got Ezra and Odegaard in those midfield areas.
00:40:19So I think when you're a player in the changing room
00:40:23and you look round and you think, you know, we've got options here
00:40:25to win a game, it's perfect.
00:40:27Yeah, I think Arteta realised over the last three years
00:40:29that they've lost players at key times to injury, which happens.
00:40:33It's part of the season.
00:40:34And to try and kind of bulletproof his team, I guess,
00:40:37from the same thing happening this year,
00:40:39they now have two, sometimes three players in every position.
00:40:42And whether they can hit the same heights as some of the other teams
00:40:45that we've seen in the Champions League, I don't know.
00:40:47But in terms of their durability, I don't think there's anyone like them.
00:40:51They have options, they've got so much cover in so many places
00:40:54that they should be able to last the course.
00:40:56And David Raya was back and back in scintillating form.
00:41:00Of course, Kepa had played in those cup games
00:41:01and he was player of the match and what a performance.
00:41:05And we're going to use Stephen because of your previous experience
00:41:07of playing in goal. A lot of people don't know.
00:41:08I was an England under-15 substitute in goal,
00:41:11so I thought this is the time to step up to the plate.
00:41:13But this is, I mean, Raya's an exceptional goalkeeper,
00:41:16gets the tiniest of touches onto this.
00:41:18That was on six minutes.
00:41:19It's just a phenomenal save. I mean, the reflexes,
00:41:21he's not the tallest, but the reflexes are very quick.
00:41:25Strong hands, making sure that he's getting that onto the crossbar.
00:41:28But these are the moments as well where you've got Katamo here
00:41:31with a little flick header at the near post.
00:41:34These are the ones that can often catch you out.
00:41:35It's great footwork, it's the agility to get down low.
00:41:38But again, not palming it out into the wrong area,
00:41:41making sure that is a strong hand.
00:41:43Comes from behind Gabriel, so he doesn't actually see that.
00:41:46It's instinctive, it's reactional, it's a brilliant save.
00:41:50And then Katamo again, down this right-hand side,
00:41:53gets the shot away, and he spills this one.
00:41:56But this is what they train for every single day.
00:41:58They'll be doing drills like that all the time where they do spill it.
00:42:01How quickly can you react? How quickly can you get up?
00:42:04Make sure you save it. It's a smart save.
00:42:06And Suarez, who he's saving it from, has scored 25 and 26.
00:42:09So, you know, he knows the back of the net, doesn't he?
00:42:11Now, this is interesting because this is from the beginning of last season.
00:42:16He's actually prevented nine goals,
00:42:18and that puts him top of the pops in terms of Champions League shot-stoppers.
00:42:22And he keeps good company in that list.
00:42:24Well, we talk about squad depth.
00:42:25What you also need is an outstanding goalkeeper.
00:42:28We've seen it throughout the Champions League.
00:42:30When you think of the Real Madrid teams that have won over recent years,
00:42:33Courtois has arguably been the best player throughout the competition.
00:42:36So important to have a solid goalkeeper.
00:42:38So often the team that wins the Champions League
00:42:40is the team that has the most clean sheets as well.
00:42:42They've had seven in the Champions League so far this season.
00:42:44Yeah, I think that becomes even more true, doesn't it,
00:42:46in the latter stages when you need to stop some of those really fearsome attacks.
00:42:50You need to find a way of shutting them down,
00:42:52and goalkeeper is central to that.
00:42:53Psychologically and contextually, that was such an important goal as well.
00:42:57Taking a goalless draw back would be great back home,
00:42:59but obviously having the win after those two defeats.
00:43:03Yeah, I think it must have had a little bit of an impact
00:43:05on the psychology of Arsenal's squad.
00:43:07They've had this almost flawless season.
00:43:09They've passed so many tests over the course of the last seven, eight months.
00:43:12To lose two games on the bounce, especially the manner of the defeat at Southampton,
00:43:15will have been a challenge for them.
00:43:16And now they can look at, you know, an interesting final couple of months.
00:43:20Obviously, the City game is massive.
00:43:22Bournemouth this weekend is huge.
00:43:24They're going to have to think about using the entire depth of that squad
00:43:27around the semi-finals should they get through, which we expect them to.
00:43:30Newcastle, Fulham and West Ham will be fighting relegation at that stage.
00:43:34There's a lot more to come.
00:43:35You know, this is the difficult bit.
00:43:37This is stressful, but Arsenal probably have the resources to cope.
00:43:39Just being there last night, David Rea was in the pitch side studio with us at the end,
00:43:44and he talked about the hurt from losing those two finals and the pain in the club,
00:43:47and actually said, we want to win this competition and the league,
00:43:51which you don't often hear players kind of admitting at this stage of the season.
00:43:55So it feels like it's galvanised them.
00:43:58Yeah, I would say so. And I think it's the fact that they are so close.
00:44:00I think you look at them in the semi-final last year, losing out to PSG.
00:44:04They know that they're capable of doing it.
00:44:06So I think I like the fact that he's come forward and said that.
00:44:09OK, to the Bernabeu now for a heavyweight meeting between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
00:44:14The most played fixture in the history of the European Cup.
00:44:17And Steve Bauer, watch this one.
00:44:20These two clubs have won the competition 21 times between them.
00:44:25The last four times Real Madrid have eliminated Bayern.
00:44:28They've gone on to lift the trophy.
00:44:30Jude Bellingham remains a substitute on his way back from injury.
00:44:34While the Champions League top scorer this season, Kylian Mbappe,
00:44:37has gone five games without a goal.
00:44:40No such issues for Harry Kane, who returns from his ankle injury,
00:44:44looking to add to his 48 Bayern goals so far this season.
00:44:58Then in from Kylian Mbappe,
00:44:59to Kylian Mbappe,
00:45:10to Kylian Mbappe,
00:45:15to Kylian Mbappe.
00:45:18and he played it back, Anupo Meccano couldn't force it over the line.
00:45:22That was a nervous moment for Real Madrid.
00:45:28Real Madrid have it back, Goula, lovely feet, Mbappe.
00:45:35He's found Vinicius Junior, who's cutting in and denied by Neuer.
00:45:41A strong left hand from Neuer.
00:45:44How many times have we seen this from Vinicius Junior?
00:45:52Oh, my word, what a mistake.
00:45:55And the young man, Thiago Pitoche, hasn't been punished.
00:46:01Goodness me.
00:46:07They've lived dangerously a couple of times already around Madrid.
00:46:11Here's Valverde, Mbappe on the move.
00:46:15It's Kylian Mbappe.
00:46:17Noye's at it again.
00:46:20Manuel Neuer's been equal to everything so far.
00:46:24Now at the angle, another good, strong hand to that.
00:46:32Kylian Mbappe won it back.
00:46:34Now Gnabry.
00:46:36Harry Kane.
00:46:38Gnabry's got men over.
00:46:40Diaz!
00:46:48Devastating from Bayern.
00:46:52Luis Diaz.
00:46:55That's his 23rd goal for Bayern Munich.
00:46:59And it's a big one in this quarterfinal.
00:47:04It's this pass here from Gnabry that does it.
00:47:08First time ice-cool finish from the Colombian.
00:47:13And periods of assurance in this first half are rewarded with the first goal.
00:47:18Real Madrid 0, Bayern 1.
00:47:23Absorbing encounter in the Bernabeu.
00:47:27Straight away.
00:47:29Bayern win it back with Pavlovich.
00:47:31Alise.
00:47:33Squaring it to Kane.
00:47:35Oh, what a start.
00:47:3820 seconds into the second half.
00:47:44Harry Kane doubles Bayern's advantage.
00:47:49With his 49th goal of this incredible season.
00:47:56And how important could it be in the context of this two-legged quarterfinal?
00:48:05A disastrous start to the second half for Real Madrid.
00:48:08But for Bayern, they are 2-0 up.
00:48:18Oh, up at Meccano's mistake.
00:48:21Vinicius Junior.
00:48:22Can he get past Neuer?
00:48:25Into the side netting.
00:48:28What an opportunity to get one back for Real Madrid.
00:48:35Goula.
00:48:38Neatly done.
00:48:40And here comes Bellingham.
00:48:42Into Mbappe.
00:48:44And again denied by Neuer.
00:48:49Much better from Real Madrid, though.
00:48:52Bellingham at the heart of it.
00:48:53There's a full stretch there, the Bayern skipper.
00:49:02Goulairs.
00:49:04To find Mbappe.
00:49:05Canisius Junior.
00:49:08Goulairs.
00:49:10Goulairs.
00:49:16Goulairs.
00:49:28Goulairs.
00:49:30And Verne.
00:49:31And Verne.
00:49:31And there's that round that goes on the overlap.
00:49:34First time cross, Mbappe.
00:49:40It crossed the line.
00:49:43And this time, this season's Champions League top scorer does score.
00:49:52And Real Madrid do have a reply.
00:49:58And Real Madrid do have a reply.
00:50:22Well, Real Madrid knew they had to score, and they have, but here's Kane at the other end.
00:50:30This time.
00:50:31And Real Madrid do have a reply.
00:50:31And Real Madrid do have a reply.
00:50:33And Real Madrid.
00:50:35And Real Madrid do have a reply.
00:50:54Mbappe, well, they're running away from him, it's Mbappe!
00:50:58Oh, Noya didn't move.
00:51:02I think Mbappe thought that was in.
00:51:06Watch them back off.
00:51:10Oh, and that's how close it was, just drifting alongside of the post.
00:51:18Well, for the first time in ten attempts, Bayern Munich have beaten Real Madrid.
00:51:26And it is the Bundesliga champions who take the advantage to Bavaria next week.
00:51:34In what will be full of intrigue again.
00:51:37Because it's finished in the Bernabeu, Real Madrid 1, Bayern 2.
00:51:46I mean, it's a good result.
00:51:49It feels like half-time, so we have time to recover our energy, focus,
00:51:56and in the right moment, I hope that when we play at home,
00:51:59with the help of our fans, we'll put in a good performance to go to the next run.
00:52:05It was a cracking game, and we're going to discuss Harry Kane in just a moment.
00:52:08But Nadam's at the screen, and he's going to have a look at another one of
00:52:11Bayern's standout performers this season.
00:52:15Yeah, thank you very much, Gabi.
00:52:16So, we're going to talk now about the former Crystal Palace winger, Michael Alisse,
00:52:20lighting up the stage in the Champions League knockouts for Bayern Munich against Real Madrid.
00:52:25Against Real Madrid, what a performance this was from him.
00:52:28And what I loved is the fact that he started the game with the intent that was going to be
00:52:31there
00:52:31throughout. Get the ball, go and take it towards the foot-back, and thinking,
00:52:35he's going to go inside, he's going to go outside.
00:52:36He can decide for himself because his quality is so high.
00:52:39And here he finishes by winning a free kick. And then later on, he gets the ball.
00:52:44He's just come inside onto his stronger left foot. Well, he surely won't go down the line.
00:52:47Yes, he absolutely will. And a great cross into the box, which was headed away well by Rudiger.
00:52:52And I think for Alisse, it was so important in this game that he was good for Bayern.
00:52:55He's been exceptional this season. And the full-back Carreras for Real Madrid,
00:52:58he didn't know whether he was coming inside or outside.
00:53:00But at least I knew the quality is there. And that ball to Harry Kane, it looks simple because
00:53:04he makes it simple with real quality. Again, getting a chance to go down the line here.
00:53:08A left footer coming inside, going outside. And here, staying patient,
00:53:12biding his time, and just slowing down the full-back. Sometimes it's quick, sometimes it's slow.
00:53:16A stab, a fake, and then a coming side. And before you know it, the speed is there.
00:53:20Always looking to end with a positive action. And here, we see him have a shot,
00:53:23and we're disappointed that he's not done better with that. But I thought he was excellent in this game,
00:53:27and it never stopped. It never allented. A different player for Real Madrid this time.
00:53:31But inside, he goes, and he finishes again with a shot. And he'd be disappointed to not hit the
00:53:34target with the quality that he has. And here, he's come a bit more central. And he takes his
00:53:38time, steps back. We've seen him out wide, but now he gets the ball, looking for a good pass.
00:53:43This is a great ball into the box. The type of ball that maybe he sees and others don't.
00:53:48And I think he was absolutely magnificent in what, for me, was one of the best games in the Champions
00:53:52League this season. And I think for Michael Alisse as well, the player with the most assists in
00:53:56Europe so far this season, it's a very, very impressive market that he's put down.
00:54:00We expect to see a lot more from him in the coming games as well.
00:54:04Thank you so much, Nadem. Let's have a quick look at the European papers after that colossal clash.
00:54:09Contra las cuerdas, or against the ropes, is Mundo Deportivo's headline after Bayern's 2-1 win
00:54:15in Madrid, with an image of Vinicius Junior with his head in his hands.
00:54:19The AS front page is slightly more optimistic. They say a goal that brings hope after Kylian Mbappe's
00:54:25second-half effort halved the deficit. And, of course, the mood was quite different over in Germany,
00:54:30with Bild's match report carrying the headline,
00:54:32Buenos Dias, Bayern conquers the Bernabeu.
00:54:38Nadem, 49th goal of the season for Harry Kane. Thomas Tuchel, as we've mentioned a little bit earlier on
00:54:43the programme, was there watching that one. I mean, he knows what his player can do, but he'd just be
00:54:48happy to see him on the pitch, scoring and fit. Yeah, absolutely. I think, given the fact that he
00:54:52didn't get any minutes in this last international break, to see him back and being fit and, you know,
00:54:56doing what he's done so, so well this year, it's a great omen for, say, Kane, for England and what
00:55:01could potentially happen this summer. I don't think he was at his absolute best, in my opinion,
00:55:04but the fact is, when the moment was there for him, lo and behold, he did exactly what he does
00:55:08as well.
00:55:08Yeah, there's been talk of, like, a minor ankle problem. So, he didn't start the away game against
00:55:14Atalanta in the last round. He missed the game against Freiburg at the weekend. He's been in
00:55:19and out and, obviously, the England camp he didn't play. Bayern are clearly managing the Harry Kane
00:55:24fitness issue. I mean, this is like, what, three months before a World Cup? This all feels very
00:55:27familiar. The England captain's got an injury to manage. But Bayern, I think, need to, no, they need to
00:55:34manage it, but you saw at the Bernabeu how important he is to Bayern. He is their cutting edge. He's
00:55:38a player that kind of makes the difference for them. It suits England that Bayern are managing
00:55:41him well, though, as well. Yeah, it's synergy. Everyone's sitting in from the same him sheet.
00:55:46It's nice. And on more England news, a more England watch for Thomas Tuchel. Of course,
00:55:51he'd had his eye all over Trent. What did you make of his performance? Yeah, I mean,
00:55:55one thing we know about Trent is he divides opinion. And Thomas Tuchel is, at the moment,
00:56:00saying that he's not in his plans for England. And what we'll see is the bad side of Trent,
00:56:05which is the defensive side. He sees where Luis Diaz is here. So he's got an eye on him.
00:56:10Then he doesn't get back in quick enough. This position now, when you watch Unai Emery
00:56:15talk about his defenders, he spins them around the other way. So they actually see the man. If
00:56:21you can see the defender's number, you're in trouble as a defender. And Luis Diaz can make
00:56:27that run at any time he wants, because he can set off. And Trent does not know what he's doing.
00:56:32But this is the other side of Trent. This ball is unbelievable. It just puts it into an area
00:56:38where Upper Meccano is thinking, if I touch this, it's going into my own goal. The goalkeeper's
00:56:44thinking, if I go out and push it out, I'm going to push it into Prangar Series running anything.
00:56:49Or it's Brian Diaz, sorry. And there's an opportunity. So it's such a difficult ball. But we know that
00:56:54quality he possesses. That wasn't the only ball he played in the game. His influence when he's in
00:56:59possession is huge. I mean, personally, I would be taking him to the World Cup because I just think,
00:57:05even in games where you need that quality, something to happen, whether you do push him
00:57:10into a little bit more of a midfield role or somewhere, I just think there's got to be a
00:57:14place for him. That wasn't Bappe's 14th Champions League goal this season. Even if they don't go on
00:57:19and progress through this tie, he's likely to finish top, isn't he? Because I think he's about four or
00:57:23five goals above the next player down. But anyway, Jude Bellingham also came on. And that was positive
00:57:30news for Thomas Tuchel. Yeah, he was really influential when he was on the pitch. I think
00:57:33there was a little bit of controversy over the fact that he didn't start. It seems relatively
00:57:36obvious to me. He's clearly not at full fitness yet. I don't think Alvaro Abaloa prefers an 18-year-old
00:57:42midfielder over Jude Bellingham. But he did kind of do enough in those 30 minutes to suggest that when
00:57:47he's in the team in Munich next week, which we presume he will be, it does kind of change the
00:57:52balance of
00:57:53the tie a little bit, I think. Alvaro himself, you mentioned him there, and he's never been told
00:57:58he's got the job permanent. He's always been kind of an interim. But that defeat means that his win
00:58:03percentage is only just below Alonso. But actually, he's lost more games. Sorry, he's lost as many games
00:58:10in less time. So it's taken him less time to lose as many games. It's incredible, isn't it? And this
00:58:16is
00:58:17going to be an issue for Real Madrid. But when you look at Real Madrid with Mbappe and the team,
00:58:21I think they're less of a team. And I think it's a problem for him. He's got big calls to
00:58:26make for
00:58:27the next game. He certainly has. OK, let's have a quick look at the quarterfinal ties and how they
00:58:32stand after those first legs. According to Opta's supercomputer, Arsenal have a 92% chance of reaching
00:58:39the semis. Bayern have an 87% chance. Atletico are 75% likely to progress. And Liverpool have been given
00:58:46a 13% chance of overturning their first leg deficit to hold as PSG. Before we go,
00:58:52some alternative sights and sounds from this week.
00:59:00the last five years.
00:59:02I think that's what's going on.
00:59:04I think what's going on, we're all around.
00:59:13They've got to be here.
00:59:16And the last eight years, there's a lot of times we're all around.
00:59:22The last eight years have been used in his new plan.
00:59:24And it's been a well-to-one.
00:59:36Thank you so much to Nadem Stephen and Rory safe journeys home to all of you
00:59:40Liverpool with it all to do on a big sporting week PSG proving when it comes
00:59:44to the Champions League they are still the Masters good night
01:00:00They are the champions
01:00:09Dear life's man, dear best man, dear brothers in the King
