02:03In Barlini, prisoners can be locked behind the door for up to 23 hours a day.
02:12But in an effort to get them active and engaged, the prison offers various work opportunities.
02:19From fixing computers or bikes that will then be donated to charity.
02:24Setting on somebody's chopper in Barlini.
02:28To jobs painting or cooking in the kitchens.
02:33Earning them a wage of between £11 and £23 a week.
02:38But the most trusted positions are the past men.
02:43A past man is a prisoner that works in the hall.
02:47His door's open most of the day.
02:48He'll do things like cleaning, collecting all the laundry, even dishing out the food.
02:53He'll be in for that, and then it's 25th of May.

03:1451-year-old Alan is serving 29 months for fraud and theft,
03:18while his friend Jim was sentenced to 23 months for assault.
03:23They usually get the past man's job as soon as they return to Barlini,
03:27which, for both of them, has been a regular occurrence since they were young.

03:33Where I came in here at 21-year-old? I'm 51.
03:36Oh, I've done a five and a four back and back and umpteen freeze.
03:41So, hang, I've done a fair power at a time.

04:10as Alan and Jim are both due to be released soon.
04:14However, there's a steady stream of new, younger prisoners coming in,
04:18ready to take their place.

04:22and if you think they're a steady enough person,
04:25you know, we'll give them a chance.

04:42First-time offender Billy is in for drug offences.
04:45He was made a passman in his first week inside,
04:48but he too is hoping to leave his position soon,
04:52as he's applying for a transfer to the open prison, Castle Huntley.
04:57So you serve half before you're due for parole,
05:00so I think it's two years, eight months for me.
05:03And then I can get to the castle, so Castle Huntley at some point,
05:08which is the open prison.
05:09So that's the kind of goal we work towards,
05:11getting to the open prison, and that would include home visits,
05:14so getting back to staying in my own house with my family.
05:17Being away from my family, being away from my kids,
05:20it's the most difficult thing,
05:22but I'm fortunate enough to be part of loads of programmes in here
05:25that get me to see them as much as possible.
05:31Outside of normal visits, the prison offers dads the opportunity
05:36to spend time with their children through various parenting workshops.

05:43Like today's Healthy Dads, Healthy Kids class.

05:51Billy's kids are regular visitors to Barlinny,
05:54but aren't fully aware of why he's here.

06:00My kids think I'm at work.
06:02They think that I'm working away,
06:04but that's something that I'll explain to them when they're old enough,
06:08but at the moment they're just not old enough to understand
06:10that I'm where I am,
06:11so in the meantime, Daddy's at work.
06:16They still kind of want to come and see me.
06:19They're still asking when I'm coming home all the time to my wife.
06:22And what's it been like for your wife?
06:24Difficult.
06:25She's managing a job and two kids,
06:28so it's going to be difficult, obviously,
06:30so that's the big issue,
06:32that your family are kind of suffering with you.
06:36You're being punished,
06:37but I'm pretty certain that I'll be able to make up
06:40to them in the future.
06:41In the meantime,
06:42I'm doing everything that I possibly can
06:44to try and get myself to the castle as quick as possible.
06:50Castle Huntley, just outside Dundee,
06:52is designed to better prepare prisoners to rejoin society
06:56by gradually allowing them more freedom.
06:59But with only 184 spaces available,
07:03only the most trusted, low-supervision prisoners
07:06from across Scotland can apply.
07:12Billy's friend, Junior, serving 20 months for assault,
07:15has already been accepted to the castle
07:17and will be going there in a few weeks.

07:22This is Junior's first time in Barlini.
07:24He gained his place at open conditions,
07:28partly because he has the most trusted job of all,
07:31the governor's past man.

09:38isn't just about giving prisoners more freedom.
09:41It's intended to gradually bridge the gap
09:43between their life inside
09:45and their new life in society
09:48because the change can be difficult.
09:50So, what is self-management?
09:53That's why the prison offers various classes
09:56to better prepare prisoners,
09:57from managing finances...
09:59So, we just try and upskill people.
10:02...to employability...
10:04Rock in motion.
10:05No fingers in the way whatsoever, OK?
10:09...and even life skills like cooking,
10:12as some prisoners who've been inside most of their lives
10:16struggle when they're released.
10:21We've seen guys now in their 50s and 60s
10:24who've been in and out of prison their whole lives.
10:26Sometimes their life's easier in here
10:28because the regime and the routine is done for them.
10:31There's not a lot of thinking for yourselves,
10:33there's not a lot of decision-making
10:34and responsibility.
10:35So, they seem comfortable in more environments
10:37where there's less decisions to make
10:39and prison is one of them.
10:44I'm not scared to get now, but I'm nervous.
10:47It's hard to explain, I'm really nervous.
10:49I just see me going better in prison.
10:53But I'm getting too old for it.
10:55Once you're in your, say, late 30s,
10:58it just seems to fly by.
11:00And you start thinking,
11:02I'm getting too old, man.
11:03I wish it would slow down a bit.
11:05And you just wish it would slow.
11:07And I'm 51 now, you know what I mean?
11:10Most of my life in prison.
11:13So, hopefully, things change.

12:46This gives them that opportunity to come away from the table,
12:48play with all the bits and bobs.
12:49And it keeps them occupied, keeps them busy,
12:51while obviously their loved ones can have more of an adult conversation.
12:55So it's important that this is secure, happy,
12:57and a safe place for everybody.
12:59But ultimately, it's not always a happy place,
13:02and sometimes it's important that we identify it as well.
13:06Staff in the visit room need to be vigilant,
13:09because it's one of the most common ways drugs enter the prison.
13:19What we're looking at here is the end of a visit.
13:23And if you pay close attention to this area here,
13:26you can see this gentleman here picks something out above his shoulder,
13:30makes a quick pass to the prisoner in question.
13:33The officer has noticed that.
13:36So then that's him.
13:37He'll be going away now.
13:41In these situations, the suspect is taken to be searched,
13:45and any drugs found are sent to the police to be destroyed.
13:50Potentially, if we miss that,
13:53that can just go right into the regime
13:57and cause all sorts of trouble, depending on what that is.
14:04Drugs are a serious problem in Barlini,
14:06and the number of prisoners with addiction issues is increasing.
14:10But to help those who want to get clean,
14:13the Recovery Cafe, run by Cisco,
14:15offers a weekly group session of support.
14:18As soon as I get out, do you have a wee something, something?
14:20And today, group leader Amanda
14:22is talking about her own experience of leaving prison with an addiction.
14:26So I'm walking down the road and I get to the boat on the street
14:28and I'm like, oh, do you know what?
14:31I'm doing a wee something, something there.
14:32Just something.
14:33Maybe I'll get a wee half bottle,
14:35and then I'll only take that half bottle,
14:38and I swear to God, I can control this.
14:40You're on the bus, you've got a half bottle,
14:42you're like, oh, maybe a couple of wee Valium.
14:46How are you going to change it?
14:47My way of changing it was going to a rehab.
14:51Go to the gym.
14:5145-year-old Bobby, sentenced to 27 months for assault,
14:56has struggled with addiction for most of his life.
14:58But with the prison's help, he's been clean for several months.
15:05He's leaving prison later today
15:07and will be picked up from the gates and taken to Abbeycare,
15:11a three-month residential rehab,
15:13to continue to work on staying drug-free.
15:16Go into Abbeycare, mate.
15:18I cannae wait.
15:19It's one of the five-star ones.

16:26The prison and rehab scheme is a good initiative
16:28and it allows people that can't cope
16:31with getting out straight out and dealing with life.
16:34This is a kind of halfway house where they'll get direct support.
16:38It's probably an easier and safer and better process
16:42to rather than getting put straight out the door.
16:46Alan is also being liberated later today.
16:50He's struggled with alcohol problems on the outside
16:53but has been completely sober for the duration of his sentence.

17:14But the prison will help to organise temporary accommodation

19:24to the open conditions at Castle Huntley.
19:27But due to an incident yesterday,
19:29he's lost his place.
19:33One minute I was at my work,
19:35I was doing fine,
19:36saying, you know, I'm trusted,
19:37I'm going about to jail,
19:38getting the milk for the governor.
19:39And then they're like,
19:40I'll come down for a drug test.
19:42I'm thinking,
19:42oh, it's a drug test, it's fine,
19:43it's because I'm going for a transfer.
19:45So I was quite happy to go for the drug test,
19:46just to, you know,
19:47prove that I don't take drugs and stuff.
19:49And then they take me into a back room
19:50and it's not a drug test.
19:52And they pull out all these sheets of paper
19:53that they've collected from, like,
19:55in the drawers at my work.
19:57And we have, like, a little room that we sit in,
19:59just, like, sheets of paper with, like,
20:01doodles on it,
20:02some have got menchies on it,
20:03some, like, gang menchies,
20:04like, little swastikas,
20:05like, all this different mishmash of stuff.
20:07And then because my rap name's there,
20:09they went and Googled it
20:10and they've seen this logo
20:11that looks like a terrorist organisation.
20:14Let's just be blunt.
20:17So it's been seen to possibly have in this possession
20:20just paperwork that's got kind of graffiti on it.
20:22It's a bit controversial.
20:26They basically need to look into it
20:27and see if it was his.
20:29He suggested it's not his,
20:30so it'll be looked into.
20:31My crime is doodling beside other people's doodles.
20:34And then they're all getting thrown on me
20:36and then because of some graphics

20:39that isn't, that I don't run,
20:41that I've not made.
20:43In the south side of Glasgow,

20:47has got back to his manager, Matthew,

20:51that's landed Junior in trouble.
20:54From what I understand,
20:55a social worker saw this website
20:58and thought we were maybe promoting Boko Haram.
21:02It all just seems very silly.

22:01And then I'm on their investigation,
22:04apparently, by the police.
22:05I don't know.
22:06They said they were going to report me to the police
22:08so the police could investigate
22:10because they said it's pretty serious.
22:11Yeah, it's all happened a bit soon.
22:16Places at Castle Huntley
22:18are like gold dust to prisoners,
22:20and the smallest infringement or misunderstanding
22:23can get a place taken away.
22:26That's why Billy has been trying his best
22:28to keep his nose clean
22:29while his application is being processed.
22:33Billy's been doing everything he can to get accepted,
22:36but that still may not be enough.
22:38It's not an easy process.
22:39People in the community think,
22:41what, so they come to custody
22:41and they're just progressed.
22:43That's not the case.
22:44You know, there's risk assessments that gets done.
22:46There's supervision levels that gets done,
22:48and continuously monitoring getting done.
22:50It's not just a tick box.
22:53There's loads of factors.
22:54Prisoners kind of realise now
22:55they need to come in
22:56and reduce the risk of he offended.
23:00Billy's one of these guys
23:01that come along every so often
23:02you can just kind of get that general feel
23:04like the good guy made a bad decision.
23:11I had a really kind of normal life
23:13compared to some of the people in here.
23:14I've always worked quite successful
23:17on the outside with my work.
23:19I'm a personal trainer.
23:25I got caught up with drugs.
23:28Caught up with drugs,
23:30made a big mistake
23:32and paid the price for it.
23:36It was a difficult point in my life.
23:39I got diagnosed with ADHD
23:40and then I got put on ADHD medication
23:42and it just didn't agree with me.
23:44Stopped working
23:45and then just get caught up
23:48in something that I shouldn't have been caught up in.
23:51Just make some money
23:53to help me through that difficult period
23:54that I wasn't working.
23:57Despite a prisoner's good behaviour,
24:00the seriousness of their crime
24:01has to be considered
24:03in all applications to the open prison.
24:06Billy was found guilty
24:07of being in possession
24:08and couriering
24:09one million pounds of cocaine.
24:13A crime that resulted
24:14in him being sentenced
24:15to over five years.

27:00which is very difficult for some people.
27:05If they don't have the support
27:06on how to run a home,
27:08how to deal with their benefits,
27:09how to budget,
27:10they're just going to come
27:11straight back here
27:11because we do
27:12practically it all for them.

56:10I've had enough of jail to last me forever.
56:24Alan has been out of prison for six months, one of the longest periods in his adult life.
56:32He left the supported accommodation and is now staying with a friend instead.
56:37He still struggles to get by on his benefits.
56:42In Ayrshire, Bobby is two weeks into a college course for adults who want to improve their
56:51employability and life skills.
56:56As Bobby's goal is to work in addiction support to help others with their recovery.

57:08I thought I was a down and out, nobody liked me and all that and no, I couldn't have been

57:19But it wasn't for them, I'd probably be back in the jail, that's the truth of it.

57:25It's managed to bring my life together again and realise there's something else out there,
