00:15In the Rhone Valley, they found a jaw and a tooth belonging to a figure that they are calling Thorin,
00:20named for a Lord of the Rings character,
00:22who existed at the tail end of the Neanderthal's entire time on this Earth as a species.
00:27And what they found by looking at not just the genome that he had, but the tools around him,
00:33is that Thorin really did not want to keep up with the times.
00:36The tools were not as up-to-date as the tools found with other groups in the area,
00:40and his genome suggests no interbreeding with what we would call the ancestors of modern humans around that time.
00:47So, in effect, his extreme isolation may have helped wipe him out entirely.
