We may have found a way to block certain brain functions to prevent memory loss.

00:00Typically Alzheimer's research focuses on amyloid protein buildups, but a new
00:04study is taking a completely different approach. So in the research the team
00:08focused on this toxic protein pairing and when these proteins are by themselves
00:12they're completely harmless but together they cause healthy brain cells to die off
00:16and they've been calling it a death switch which is really scary. To
00:21counteract this death switch or flip it off they developed this innovative new
00:25drug and it kind of works the way that a placing a paper between two pieces of
00:30Legos would. If something is between the Legos they wouldn't be able to snap
00:34together and the drug kind of counteracts the binding site of the two proteins so
00:39they no longer can form a connection. And it's really incredible because this
00:44isn't just hopeful for Alzheimer's research but it could be used for a
00:47myriad of other conditions like Parkinson's offering hope for tons of
00:50individuals who are suffering from these diseases.
