00:00Welcome. Hello and welcome to our coverage of the Tamil Nadu elections. We're kicking things off
00:04from the beautiful, beautiful city of Madurai. It's called the land of temples. We've got so
00:10much to show you in our very first episode here of the Tamil Nadu elections. But why have we
00:15chosen Madurai? Yes, great people, beautiful temples. But beyond that, we're focusing on
00:21the political fight. Madurai district itself has 10 seats out of 234 seats up for grabs.
00:27And it's been equally poised. Five to the DMK, five to the AIA-DMK. There's been an interesting
00:32divide there. Urban seats largely have gone to the DMK. The traditional rural seats have
00:37gone the AIA-DMK's way. So things change this time around. What will Madurai deliver? That's
00:43what we're going to be talking about. Join us on this journey in the beautiful city of
00:47Madurai.
01:08Okay, so we've come to a bustling bustand here in Madurai. Because you guessed it, we want
01:12to hear from the people of Madurai and what they think. What change do they want? Are they
01:17happy with the current government? Are they happy with their MLA? We've got a bunch of reactions
01:21coming your way. It's interesting to see what people have to say and who they're picking.
01:24There are a few surprises as well. Join me. Let's talk to the people. Get their punks.
01:39¡Ack!
01:40¡Ack!
01:41¡Ack!
01:41¡Ack!
01:43¡Ack!
01:50¡Ack!

04:03This is not true.
04:08I will go to Vijayi and, if you don't do Vijayi and you have to come,
04:46Because if radicals may not be strong, they will not be strong!
04:51Why is it?
04:52The next generation is growing a lot, and we have to live there.
04:58The first voice I've heard said in BJP!
05:03$4,000 is the best sponsor.
05:05What are the ones that have worn the albums?
05:07They are the ones who did this.
05:09They are the ones who did that.

06:32Oh.
06:33Are you coming to Ajith politics?
06:37I'm not coming.

06:44Sorry.

06:47No.

06:49I'm not coming.
06:51I'm not coming.
06:52I'm not coming.

07:26You are coming here.
07:29No.
07:30Why come you once again?
07:33No.
07:35I'm coming here.
07:37What's your concern?
07:38You will find the birth of all the jurisdictions
07:41I know it's a bit of a problem
07:42I'm able to do this
07:46Just a bit of a problem
07:53I get the same problem
07:56I'm not sure if BJP is a problem
08:00They just have to try
08:01They keep the same problems
08:04And they don't work
08:05Can you get to the vessel and go to the CSK or Vijay?
08:07Madam, we are coming to the Vizayas.
08:10I'm coming to the Vizayas.
08:12I'm coming to the Vizayas.
08:14Where are you going to vote?
08:21Where are you going to vote?
08:23Vote, I'm going to vote for the Udhayas.
08:25What do you do?
08:26I'm going to vote for the Udhayas.
08:28What do you do?
08:29Do you have to vote for a few days?
08:31I'm going to get a bus,
08:53It's a hot day here in Madrid, but interesting voices, I think it was worth the effort here
08:59at the bus stand.
09:00And why, because this being a DMK stronghold, we've got such varied reactions, such an interesting
09:07mix of people and so many voices backing Vijay.
09:11Now, I don't know whether it'll translate to words, how many of them will actually go
09:15to the polling booth and choose the whistle symbol.
09:17But interesting really that what I've heard about so far is actually happening, that this
09:23is actually, actually a three-cornered contest.
09:26So very, very interesting this time.
09:53When we speak of ancient civilizational ties of Padre, what exactly am I talking about?
09:59We've traveled about 30 minutes away from the city.
10:01That's right, 30 minutes away.
10:02We've got evidence of the civilizational ties, of the history of Tamil culture here in Maduro.
10:08I'm at the Kiriti site.
10:10What has this got to do with politics in Tamil Nadu?
10:12I'll explain that to you in just a bit.
10:14But let me first show you why we've come here.
11:03So what you're seeing here is that the work continues at Kiriti.
11:08And that's because this is acres of land where they're still yet to really identify the full
11:14scale of the civilization that existed.
11:17What you see around me is bits and pieces, clay pieces, brick pieces that are being found.
11:21We still don't know exactly how much this dates back to.
11:25What we know of that setup in the museum is that it's about 2,500 years old.
11:29These discoveries still being made.
11:32And it'll go on for months just because of the sheer scale of what we're looking at.
11:36The archaeological work, trying first to find every bit of evidence and then testing it
11:41to see how far back it dates.
11:44There's remnants of construction.
11:46There's remnants of thoughts, which obviously again suggests that there was clearly an active,
11:52thriving civilization centuries ago.
11:56But like I said, this is still a civilization that's being discovered, that's being unraveled
12:01before our eyes.
12:05So deeper means more old.
12:38I mean, just seeing the sheer scale of what we're talking about, of the civilization that
12:44it dates back to about 2,500 years.
12:47I think for every Tamarim, for me particularly, to see this event, it's a sense of awe.
12:52It's a sense of pride.
12:53It's also a sense of shock that nobody's actually talking about this.
12:56I mean, forget Tamil Nadu and the politics, but across the country, across the world even,
13:01this should be a talking point that what they've discovered so far, they tell me, is about
13:054 acres.
13:05This actually spans over 100 acres.
13:08And so we've just touched essentially a bit of what's happening, the tip of the iceberg,
13:13if you will.
13:13But what's the politics about?
13:15The DMK says they are fighting to ensure that this site right here is recognized.
13:20It's recognized for its heritage, its history, and the due recognition for Tamil culture
13:25is given.
13:27So far, the central government has turned down reports that have suggested that this is as
13:31old as they say, over 2,500 years old.
13:34They're conducting their own verification.
13:36So at this point, they've essentially pressed pause on going ahead and giving it the credit
13:41at this point that the DMK says, this site and Tamil language, Tamil civilization and culture
13:48deserves.
13:49That's what the political flashpoint is.
13:51But what you see on your screens is evidence that yes, a civilization existed here in Kiradi
13:58centuries ago.
13:59And just imagine, you're getting a glimpse of what life looked like all that time back.
