00:0137-year-old Tristan Harry Bunkle was first arrested and charged by police yesterday afternoon around Mareeba in relation to
00:09the death of a 70-year-old man in Dimbeulah.
00:12Now he's facing one murder charge and another charge of misconduct with a corpse by interference, both of which police
00:20say are domestic violence charges.
00:22Now police first launched an investigation after they were called to a property in Dimbeulah, about 100 kilometres west from
00:28here in Cairns, to conduct a welfare check on the 70-year-old man.
00:32It was on arrival at that property that they discovered human remains. Here's a bit of what they told us
00:37earlier.
00:37When police attended there on Tuesday the 24th of March on that evening, there was a fire burning on that
00:43property and police saw what they felt was human remains.
00:45They took immediate action to attempt to recover them and to extinguish that fire.
00:51So that's when the investigation really fully picked up and kicked off from there.
00:57It's certainly one of the more confronting I've heard of and I've seen obviously the images from there.
01:01So I think that they reacted superbly on the night.
01:05Police say they'll be alleging Mr Bunkle killed the 70-year-old man before setting fire to his body after
01:11his death.
01:12They'll also be alleging the two men who they say lived together at the Dimbeulah property were known to each
01:17other.
01:17Not directly related but through marriage.
01:20And that an altercation took place between the two men on the night before police were called to the property.
01:26Now Mr Bunkle had his case before the Mareeba Magistrates Court this morning with his lawyers appearing for him.
01:32They made no application for bail and he's been remanded in custody until his next court appearance in June.
