Agricultural market analyst Andrew Whitelaw from Episode 3 warns of a spike in the cost of imported chemicals and machinery parts.

00:00Okay, as we all know, we've got issues getting fuel into Australia, we've got issues getting
00:04fertiliser into Australia. One of the next issues we're going to have is actually our shipping
00:09freight for everything else. So as we know, everything comes by a container or bulk,
00:15but we're starting to see a bit of a rise in shipping rates for containers. This is because
00:21things like bunkers to fuel boats is going up, but also just because of logistical constraints
00:26caused by the issues in the Middle East. So over the next couple of months, we expect
00:32to see the cost of importing things into Australia to increase a little bit, and that could be
00:37our chemicals, our machinery parts, basically everything else, even our agricultural, veterinary
00:43chemicals could be impacted by that. However, we may actually see that our freight rates and
00:50container rates actually drop as we come into sort of later half of this year into next year.
00:56year because of the fact that we do see this sort of thing where global growth may be
01:02calms from. And if global growth drops, then there'll be less demand for all these type of
01:06products coming out of China as an example. And we saw this in a GFC where we had a really
01:13strong rise in container rates up to almost record levels, followed by a smash where actually
01:18a lot of container boats got just parked up because there wasn't enough demand, because just
01:23there wasn't stuff moving. So that's kind of what I expect to see in the next year is that
01:28we may see global growth starting to stall, a drop in demand for products, and then freight
01:35rates starting to sort of fall back down again. But I expect we'll see a bit of a jump up
01:40in
01:40prices for container rates in the next, basically the next couple of weeks to a couple of months.
01:46months. Not good news, but it is what it is.
