Agricultural market analyst, Matt Dalgleish from Episode 3, looks at how lamb prices tracking across the globe.
Transcript
00:00This week episode 3 has been looking at sheep prices or lamb prices specifically around the globe.
00:05In Australia we've seen lamb prices just creep above $1,100 on a carcass weight basis.
00:12If we compare that to New Zealand, New Zealand are sitting at about $8.69 if we convert it into
00:17Australian dollar terms.
00:18So they're quite a bit below us.
00:20Australia is sitting at about a 35% premium to the New Zealand lamb pricing.
00:25So it keeps New Zealand exports quite competitive presently.
00:28If we look across the Northern Hemisphere, in the UK and Europe, prices there are a bit over $1,500.
00:35So they're sitting at the moment, Australia is at about a 24% discount to the EU and the UK
00:40pricing.
00:41So that's keeping us reasonably competitive into those markets.
00:45But the big move has been the US.
00:47US price is at $2,120 in Australian cents terms.
00:51And in the last year it's risen about $0.61.
00:53So a really strong rise in pricing for the US lamb producers presently.
00:58At the moment, Australian prices are 46% below the US.
01:03So again, another market that's key to us in terms of our exports and the Australian product is fairly competitive.
01:09So hopefully, even despite the 15% tariff that Shiba Lama are attracting into the US,
01:15we should still see some good flyers going there as we progress through this year.
01:19So that would be good for the Australian producer.
