Von der Leyen clinches Australia trade deal

The European Commission clinched a trade deal with Canberra on Tuesday, liberalising flows of goods while keeping quotas on sensitive EU farm products and leaving Australia’s luxury car tax largely intact.

00:00European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday sealed a free trade agreement with Australia
00:08in a deal that slashes tariffs on most EU goods and farm exports.
00:13The pact will save the EU 1 billion euros a year in duties, the European Commission said,
00:20with exports projected to climb as much as 33 percent over the next decade.
00:27So what I have seen with a growing unpredictability and uncertainty worldwide
00:33is that countries are longing for stability and predictability.
00:38And this is what the European Union is offering.
00:42Tariffs will eventually fall to zero on products including cheese, wine, some fruit and vegetables, chocolate and processed foods.
00:50A safeguard mechanism will allow the EU to shield sensitive sectors
00:55if a surge in Australian imports harms the bloc's market.
