00:17and minnesota and i feel like this is the opportunity to establish themselves in this
00:22division and and re-establish some goodwill with the fan base and not that whatever i mean
00:29i think the fan base right now is uh tempered excitement about what happened yesterday is
00:34probably a good way to put it you know that it was it was good to see blowouts don't happen

00:40if you're grading on the curve hey this team played a one this arizona team played a one score game
00:45against san francisco let's all come back and score late i mean you know uh san francisco saw there was
00:51a close it was a three-point game going to the fourth quarter san francisco kind of had a kill
00:55shot touchdown uh arizona scored a kick the field goal rather to make it a one score game and you
01:01know late in the game and didn't get the ball back but anyway the point is you you know if
01:07you grade
01:08on the curve against the best teams in the nfc seattle did blow them out well san francisco's five
01:12and oh seattle's three and two right um those are the good teams that have played arizona so arizona
01:18can give you problems as can any nfl team which is why i don't dismiss what happened yesterday as
01:24nothing another reason i don't think we should dismiss what happened yesterday as nothing is
01:28because they tried something new defensively and it worked um based upon our conversations guys how
01:37often did you watch yesterday when they show a replay defensively and see a player wide open running
01:43wide open and notice and i hate to pick on chuck clark but it seemed like chuck clark was always
01:47running right past a wide open wide receiver that made you think is this exactly what they're talking
01:51about just be where you're supposed to be right yeah like yes the 100 there was the one deep pass
01:57that you're like what are you doing like why are you going where you're going when clearly there's
02:02a receiver going past you and you're the you're the last line of defense i just kept thinking of that
02:08i just kept thinking of that now the you it's easy to assume that the guy that was like in
02:14the in
02:14the vicinity last that it was his responsibility but we don't know that because we don't know the
02:20defensive play call but i imagine a safety isn't supposed to let somebody get past you
02:23under any circumstances uh no probably not um also good to see that uh keith abney played quite a bit
02:31of safety and did a real nice job got a pick at the end of the first half but uh
02:37seemed to help
02:38calm things down he says he feels comfortable back there playing it so that could be a blessing as
02:43well moving forward with this team abney played a season high in terms of number of snaps guys who
02:51played season highs defensively abney was one 59 snaps season high ns rake straw was one 35 snaps
02:58season high derrick more although many of them came in garbage time late uh season high 20 snaps so
03:04just something to pay attention to okay uh it is opening statement dan campbell put into perspective

04:42i'm sure everything's going to be evaluated but if this team looks so chaotic defensively in the
04:50secondary this season up until yesterday and then yesterday they show up they get five three and outs
04:58and guys look like they're where they're supposed to be doesn't that tell you that what they've been
05:04working on is is working well it doesn't mean they won't get beat but i mean i'm not the people
05:11that
05:12say no say it was arizona who cares it was jacoby brissette who cares and i i would argue that
05:18again i go
05:19back to grading on the curve uh and what arizona has been able to do what they did against san
05:24francisco
05:24you know what they did against the giants what they did against uh the chargers but most most
05:29importantly that you know they played san francisco much tougher than this so it shows that they are
05:34capable of better than they were against against detroit here's the caution i have moving forward and
05:42it's one i have to keep telling myself don't get too excited about brian branch coming back i want to
05:48get excited about it because i think he's an outstanding player but i also am trying to temper my
05:53enthusiasm by saying it's an achilles injury it should take a while to come back from he shouldn't
05:58be like rip roaring ready to go from day one and yet we've seen other players with the achilles like
06:04george kill just sprint like crazy and he's ready to go yep i want to make sure that i'm trying
06:11to
06:11curb that enthusiasm for getting him back and and put it in perspective and yet part of me can't help

06:18i i think that a healthy brian branch at safety is going to make this defense so much better and

06:25and at least they know where they're supposed to be well think back to what we just mentioned about
06:30chuck clark yeah is is brian branch the guy who who is in better position again i'm picking on chuck
06:39clark here because to the naked eye and and with the information we have available it looks like that's a
06:44safety that made the wrong read a couple of times now that's gonna happen like you're going to give
06:49up some yards you're going to uh have a missed assignment but is brian branch in better position
06:57just simply to make the degree of difficulty to complete some of those passes far more difficult
07:02than it turned out to be with receivers running wide open when they kept showing those like all 22s or
07:08you know what was going on in the secondary and there were at least two occasions yesterday where it was
07:13like where was chuck clark going now you know without knowing the defensive play call it's hard
07:19to know that it's 100 his fault sure but i i feel more comfortable knowing the branch is coming back
07:25with his knowledge of the defense and maybe it takes some of the pressure off of jack campbell as well
07:31that jack knows he's got his buddy back there you know they're the captain of the secondary you got
07:35the captain of the linebackers now these guys can work together and calm things down and the defense can
07:40can be much improved this defense is not going to be a top 10 defense they might be the best

07:46best defensive line in the national football in terms of getting after the quarterback they factually
07:52have more sacks than any other team in the nfl i think they have more pressures than the other team
07:56in the nfl i mean add five more to the total yesterday they got 20 sacks in five games that

08:03for a detroit lions team through five games in history which is saying something now i'm not sure when
08:10those stats start when they started keeping that um officially you know because you have those
08:15silver rush teams in the late 70s early 80s that were with with bubba baker and uh doug english and
08:22william gay they appear for you were outstanding defensive front quarterback sacks became an official
08:27stat in 1982 yeah i mean bubba baker on the football card had 23 and a half sacks in 1978
