Is McGonigle the best athlete in Detroit right now?
Transcript
00:00In the 8 o'clock hour, sports fans are threatening to boycott something.
00:05We'll get to the Nothing Ever Happens update desk.
00:07There are a few reports involving the Red Wings and the Pistons.
00:12Minor trade and a little update on Larkin.
00:15We'll do that at 8.02.
00:17Kevin McGonigal, hell of a story this guy's become.
00:1921 years old, Stoney.
00:21He had two hits last night in a Tiger win.
00:23He now has 53 games where he's been on base multiple times.
00:28It's the most for a rookie before the All-Star break in MLB history.
00:33Right.
00:34He passed to Aaron Judge who did it his rookie year.
00:36May have heard of him.
00:37Yeah.
00:39So that's a little cookie cutter when you break that.
00:41Before the All-Star break as a rookie multiple times.
00:44They find stats on everything.
00:45But don't let that get in the way of it just continuing to pump the tires of a great story.
00:51He's 21 years old, Stoney.
00:53And now, as of this morning, he has the best war, wins above replacement, in the American League.
00:59Not rookie.
01:00Not rookie.
01:00Yeah.
01:01Let's cut out with a full moon on a sunny day in July.
01:05Just for the season, the highest war of anybody in the American League is Kevin McGonigal.
01:09And he impacts the game in so many ways.
01:11So what we'd like to ask, where does he rank among Detroit athletes right now?
01:17And is he the MVP of his team?
01:20Of course, Dingler would be the other consideration.
01:25So, I don't want to call it a Mount Rushmore, but are you going to rank how many are we
01:30doing here?
01:31I just, where does he stack up?
01:35Um, I think he's third.
01:39Okay.
01:39So, Cade won?
01:40Mm-hmm.
01:41Who's two?
01:42Sewell.
01:43Sewell's two.
01:45In my mind.
01:47But, you know, it's shades of difference.
01:50I think Cade has to be one.
01:51Cade finished in the MVP voting the last two seasons.
01:54Cade had some postseason moments.
01:55He was first team NBA this year.
01:57Yeah.
01:58Cade is the number one.
01:59Yes.
02:01I love Sewell.
02:03I get put in him number two.
02:06Any consideration to Amon Ross St. Brown?
02:08Multiple All-Pros.
02:09By the way, congratulations to Amon Ross.
02:11He got engaged.
02:12Oh, congrats to him.
02:13Yeah.
02:13I think when we get to this season, Gibbs is going to put up such a monster year that he
02:17could enter this conversation.
02:20Where'd he put Sider?
02:21I'd say Sider actually got not only Norris votes, but MVP votes on a team that didn't even make the
02:26playoffs.
02:30I'll start with this.
02:31I think McGonigal's the MVP of his own team, ahead of Dylan Dingler.
02:35That's very close, but the reason, because their wars are similar, correct?
02:40The reason I would put McGonigal as the MVP ahead of Dingler, and it's tough because Dingler plays a tougher
02:47position when he's playing.
02:49He can also DH, but I think the fact that the versatility of Kevin McGonigal playing different positions puts him
02:59at the top.
02:59And the more positions he can play, the less we have to see of people like McKinstry and those type
03:06of players.
03:06What's funny, defense isn't what tips the scale for me, because I think Dingler's a fantastic defender at a premium
03:12position.
03:13But then you think about it, shortstop in a minor defender position either.
03:18No, I know.
03:18He's playing the hot corner, and he's playing shortstop.
03:20Defense isn't the separator to me.
03:22No, it's that he can play anywhere.
03:24Yeah, it's, to me, it's what he does offensively.
03:29Dingler has the homers, but McGonigal gets on base.
03:33Right.
03:34What's the whole ethos supposed to be of this baseball team?
03:37Who do they want to be?
03:38They want to be a team that owns the zone.
03:40I am going to scream it from the rooftop because it's a crazy statement, but it's true.
03:45Kevin McGonigal has the best eye in baseball at 21 years old.
03:48Kevin McGonigal, in his first season, never played college baseball, never played AAA, has the best eye in Major League
03:54Baseball.
03:55There are only so many guys with more walks than strikeouts.
03:58You can count them on two hands.
03:59He has the most walks of anybody in that group.
04:02He has become an elite table setter.
04:05He's the best base runner on this team.
04:07He leads them in stolen bases.
04:08His contributions are immense in all facets of the game.
04:13Is he going to hit 40 home runs?
04:14No.
04:15Dingler's going to lead the team in homers.
04:16But I think McGonigal is their most valuable player.
04:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:19I mean, McGonigal may end up with 20 this year.
04:21Right.
04:21He could be a 20-20 guy who plays plus defense and has a 400 on base.
04:27Stoney, he's pacing to have one of the greatest rookie seasons of all time.
04:32He's got speed, too.
04:34He can steal bases occasionally if you need him to do that.
04:38He's such a smart base runner.
04:41I mean, man, he's incredible.
04:44That's why I put him as the head of Dingler's for MVP.
04:46So you and I would have him ahead of anybody on his own team.
04:50Yes.
04:50And then you put him third for the city.
04:52And I don't think I'm really going to fight you on it.
04:53I mean, people can get in on the comments, call us up, 248-539-9797.
04:59But we're choosing this to be a day where we talk about how great this guy is because
05:02I don't think we've given him enough love this season.
05:04No.
05:06And the Tigers themselves, look, I mean, they're still nine under .500.
05:09They didn't make up any ground in the wild card.
05:11But Nettie, I thought, was pretty fair when he said they got to win five of six on his
05:14homestand if they want to be taken seriously as a wild card team.
05:17Historically and statistically, that is correct.
05:20But I'd rather than do this never-ending Tiger conversation.
05:24Right.
05:24Talk McGonagall.
05:24Right.
05:26The fact of the matter is, when you're ranking guys in this town, playoffs should count.
05:34But, I mean, it's tough to judge Panay Sewell by his, quote, playoff performances.
05:41You know, they didn't have any this past season, but he's been in three, four playoff games.
05:47And I would say-
05:48Cade was pretty good this playoff season.
05:50Cade has the Pistons playoff scoring record.
05:52He said it last season.
05:53He has the playoff performance.
05:54On Sewell, you have to geek out.
05:56But watch, go back and watch when they played their Rams playoff game and how the offensive
06:01line dominated.
06:02Look at the, specifically when they jumped the Niners, how dominant the offensive line
06:05was, Panay specifically.
06:07He showed up in the postseason.
06:09Yeah.
06:12Yeah, I think the only other consideration would be like a St. Brown.
06:17Yeah, because-
06:23And I know Doug normally gets in right around this time.
06:26He'll make a case for Jack Campbell, I'm sure.
06:28Yeah.
06:29Yeah, look, you can, some people could make a case for golf.
06:31I mean, statistically and, you know, completion percentages and accuracy and all that.
06:37It's right up there, but he, I, no.
06:40Those are my top three.
06:43Yeah.
06:44Montero has been the best this year for the Tigers, unnamed texter.
06:48I think he's unheralded.
06:50He's not good, but he's not the MVP.
06:52No.
06:53McGonagall's not the MVP of this team.
06:54It's Dingler, but he will be the biggest and best Tiger since Mickey.
07:00So he's saying will be.
07:01Yeah.
07:01He's only 21.
07:02I mean, he's crazy.
07:03I mean, we'll play a Dickerson highlight at some point and it's McGonagall delivers.
07:07We're going to hear that for 15 years.
07:09It's going to be great.
07:11McGonagall over sliced bread.
07:13Perfect combination of Chuck Norris and Jesus.
07:192, 4, 8, 5, 3, 9, 97, 97.
07:23I can't wait to get some of this feedback on it.
07:26Kevin McGonagall is such a great story, especially given that he's going to an all-star game as a rookie.
07:29That all-star game will be in his hometown.
07:31That's amazing.
07:32And he's playing his hometown favorite team this weekend here, though.
07:37In the run-up.
07:38Yeah.
07:38Yeah.
07:40All right.
07:408.02, we'll get to the Nothing Ever Happens update desk.
07:42We have something to update you on with Larkin and the Pistons.
07:45It's 97.1.
