What do you expect McGonigle to do in his rookie season with the Detroit Tigers?
Transcript
00:11and the booze
00:15gotta have a hockey game could have fooled me
00:17down 3-0 to a shorthanded
00:19Senators team on a second night of a back-to-back
00:22I don't really care about the half-hearted comeback
00:24that falls short too little too late
00:27or a fight with 8 seconds to go
00:28hey we stuck up for each other great
00:32no moral victories
00:33and if this team doesn't make the playoffs
00:35that's 10 years I don't care about
00:36well the points to get in were higher
00:39than they've been
00:40when you are competing you aren't competing in a vacuum
00:43you're competing with other teams and you have to beat them
00:47anyway we're going to move on from the Red Wings talk
00:49I said we'll get into it again later in the show
00:50give people a chance to vent but it's not the only headline
00:53in fact we have a great headline to discuss
00:55I was going to say before we get there you need to make sure you have
00:57that walleye drop ready
00:59because we may have to hit it
01:03let's just move on
01:05because we got great news
01:06Kevin McGonigal is going to make the big league club for the Tigers
01:08and I love that they're not playing any games
01:10there's no shenanigans about service time
01:12you're chasing a World Series
01:13you have the best team come north
01:15Kevin McGonigal is part of the best team
01:17and it's great that they have a guy
01:18John
01:20who provides that plate discipline
01:22that own the zone
01:24the own the zone philosophy has a face
01:27it's a guy in Kevin McGonigal who led the team in walks in the spring
01:30he earned his way onto the major league roster
01:33and he should give him a jolt this season
01:35yeah and if you go down the list of guys that have made that jump from double a not having
01:41to spend a day in triple a and they're right in the big leagues
01:44like there's some there's some big names
01:47and one that we've talked about most recently in the last couple of years
01:50is he going to be a Tiger is he not
01:51is Bregman
01:52and if he can if he could follow suit with a lot of those players that we've talked about
02:00I think the excitement level for Kevin McGonigal
02:03when people got that notification yesterday
02:08I think it raised the anticipation and excitement for opening day for the Detroit Tigers
02:14it clearly did
02:15there's already plenty of it
02:17hey Scoople's going to take the mound
02:18whatever your emotions are about him
02:21and his tenure here
02:22or how long it lasts
02:23you're excited to see him on the mound
02:25because he's two times Cy Young or a winner
02:28Framer Valdez
02:30and then you go to JV
02:32like you're excited about a lot of these
02:34and the one thing that there really wasn't much change in
02:38is the Pats
02:39yep
02:39the one
02:41I don't know if you
02:42I'm not going to sit there and say the big bat
02:44big bat potential
02:46is Kevin McGonigal
02:49he's going to be a rookie
02:50it's going to be
02:51there's going to be some rocky moments
02:54but
02:54there is a great excitement
02:57because it wasn't just
02:58oh well let's bring him up and see how he does
03:01this feels more like
03:02as you said
03:04he's earned his way onto the roster
03:06with what he has done
03:09yeah and they couldn't even do
03:10like a Cubs Chris Bryant situation
03:12where you say
03:13he's got to work on his defense
03:14right
03:15because he played well
03:16at two critical positions on the infield
03:18shortstop and third
03:19he was turning double plays
03:20he's making diving plays at the hot corner
03:22he left them
03:23no excuses
03:25he played so well
03:26he earned his way onto this roster
03:28and in terms of impact
03:30yeah they need a guy like this
03:32who makes hard contact
03:33there's not a big hole in his swing
03:35and he's got a good eye
03:36he'll draw walks
03:37he led the team
03:37and walks and walk great in the spring
03:39he belongs on this club
03:40and I love that they're not running any games
03:42and we'll see him in two weeks
03:44and he's here
03:45they're in this
03:45they're competing for a world series
03:47this is a move you make
03:48if you're trying to win a world series
03:49how big of an impact can he have
03:51well John you mentioned some of these guys
03:52who have skipped triple A
03:54and there's Trout
03:55there's Soto
03:56there's Jose Ramirez
03:58Machado
03:59Bregman
04:01and instantly those guys made impacts on their team
04:04instantly
04:05I'll give you
04:05he might challenge for the American League Rookie of the Year
04:07he's currently the betting favorite
04:09the last three batters to win the AL Rookie of the Year
04:13were five and six war players that season
04:15now that's a lofty bar to set for McGonagall
04:19but those are the type of things that he's capable of
04:23well I guess I
04:25so we have our expectations
04:28I want to know from Tigers fans
04:31what are the expectations that you are putting on Kevin McGonagall
04:35his rookie season
04:37are you going to
04:38is there any semblance of reality
04:43or
04:45like
04:46because we do know
04:47every baseball player
04:49and it doesn't matter if your first year
04:50your tenth year
04:51you're going to go through slumps
04:52and I mentioned it yesterday
04:53I think from hearing what we have heard from AJ
04:55and everyone else that is watching him
04:59prepare for games
05:01learn and grow from game to game
05:03has said his process
05:04they've talked about
05:06and I'm you know
05:07it's not the trust the process type of conversation
05:09but it is
05:11if he has a slump
05:13how quickly can he come out of it
05:15what does that look like
05:17because there were times in the preseason
05:19where yeah he's still gaining walks
05:20but he wasn't making contact
05:21he was able to come out of it
05:23and I think
05:24if we're looking at those guys
05:26that have come up more recently
05:28in regards to Spencer Torkelson
05:30and Colt Keith
05:32like we saw
05:33we saw Spencer Torkelson basically go
05:35an entire season in a slump
05:36right
05:37and he was sent back down
05:38and you know
05:39first of all
05:40he had to sit next to AJ
05:41then he was sent down
05:42and brought back
05:43but
05:44okay but I guess what I'd like to stress to people
05:46Torkelson was the number one overall pick
05:48McGonagall's the better prospect
05:50there's no question
05:50yeah so but just so people understand
05:52like just because a guy's number one
05:53coming out of college
05:54it's a journey to get to the bigs
05:56and McGonagall rose up to as high as number two
05:58in all of baseball
05:59from the prospect pool standpoint
06:01and again not playing at all in AAA
06:03you are in a different caliber of prospect
06:06the guys we're talking about
06:07who skipped AAA
06:09are rookie
06:11best bat on the team kind of guys
06:13what I'm trying to do is
06:16the guys that have come up
06:18even though they've been in AAA
06:19all right
06:19McGonagall's not that
06:20yeah
06:21but
06:21Colt Keith
06:22like when are we going to see
06:25what the Tigers saw
06:26by giving him that contract
06:28that minor league contract
06:30so that he
06:31you know
06:31hey
06:31six year deal
06:32all of a sudden
06:33we had the expectations
06:34like and
06:34and are
06:35are we eventually going to see
06:37that player
06:40out of Keith or McGonagall
06:41Keith
06:41oh well
06:42I mean
06:43I think this year
06:43the plan is to give him a home
06:44at third base
06:45and better find out
06:46it'll be his third year
06:47in the bigs
06:47right
06:48right
06:48and so
06:49I think
06:50in having said that
06:51like that's the floor
06:54for McGonagall
06:55throughout the course
06:56of this year
06:57the ceiling
07:00the ceiling
07:00is as you mentioned
07:01it's rookie of the year
07:03it's matching
07:04all of those other guys
07:05Soto
07:06and Bregman
07:07and
07:08it's
07:09it's matching
07:09those guys
07:10and being a
07:11five war player
07:132-4-8-5-3-9-97-97
07:16in terms of where he slots in
07:17he's a shortstop
07:19he can play some third
07:20he shows that
07:21but this team's weakest spot
07:23is shortstop
07:24right
07:24so I would imagine
07:26he plays predominantly
07:27at that spot
07:28yeah I think so
07:29yeah
07:29I mean
07:29when you look at the roster makeup
07:31it's
07:31he's going to be the shortstop
07:32there's a lot of guys
07:33that can play third
07:34and there's a lot of guys
07:35that can play center
07:37it's Javi
07:37and kind of McKinstry
07:39that can play shortstop
07:41McGonagall's going to
07:42log a lot of time there
07:43where does he fit
07:44in the lineup
07:44I would imagine
07:45they will keep the pressure
07:46off of him
07:47early
07:49why
07:49and he would
07:50be near the bottom
07:51because he's not
07:52been a big leaguer before
07:54but I could see him
07:55he's making that jump
07:56but I could see him
07:56very quickly ascending up
07:58the lineup
07:58AJ doesn't strike me
07:59as someone who's going to say
08:00he's leading off
08:01on opening day
08:03maybe I'll be wrong
08:04maybe they are
08:05I mean they're high enough
08:06that he skipped triple A
08:07but
08:07do you think he's
08:09going to be in the top five
08:10or the bottom four
08:11I think his first game
08:12he'll be in the bottom four
08:13I don't think it'll be very long
08:14he should rise up quickly
08:16now I know Evan Petzold
08:17of the free press
08:18has his opening day
08:19lineup projection
08:20yeah
08:21in order
08:22and it's in one of the
08:23many pieces of paper
08:24I have here
08:24here you go
08:26he has Cary Carpenter
08:27leading off
08:28as the DH
08:28they're going to face
08:30a righty
08:30they've done that before
08:31Cary Carpenter
08:32in the lead off
08:33Gleyber Torres
08:34in the two hole
08:35profiles
08:35his number two hitter
08:37Kevin McGonigal
08:38number three
08:40playing shortstop
08:42do you expect that
08:44I kind of do
08:45do you really
08:45yeah
08:46I kind of do
08:47if he is
08:57if he's the prospect
08:58and the player
08:59you think he is
09:00and he's got this process
09:01he's going to
09:02be able to make contact
09:03he's going to get on base
09:04if he's one of the guys
09:06that you think
09:06is going to be on base
09:09then you want him
09:10to be at the plate more
09:11he profiles as a top
09:12of the order guy
09:13I mean plate discipline
09:14get on base
09:15knock guys in
09:16I mean ideally
09:16why wait to bring him up
09:17why wait to put him
09:19at the top of the lineup
09:20do I think he's already
09:21Mike Trout
09:22no I don't
09:23do I already think
09:24he's Juan Soto
09:25no I don't
09:26I mean I
09:26can a guy get
09:27a couple weeks
09:27under his belt
09:28I mean if he goes
09:29sure you can baby him along
09:31oh that's what this is
09:32babying a guy
09:33is putting him in the bigs
09:34without hitting in triple A
09:36without seeing any triple A
09:37pitching
09:37that's babying a guy
09:39I'm not going to be mad
09:40if they have him lead off
09:42or bat first
09:42second
09:43third or fourth
09:43my read is
09:45he would start
09:47his big league career
09:48near the bottom
09:49of the order
09:49and work his way up
09:50and if and when
09:51he performs as well
09:52as everybody anticipates
09:54yeah
09:54worth pointing out
09:55by the way
09:56grew up in a similar
09:56part of the country
09:57as Mike Trout
09:58Mike Trout
09:59was a 10 war player
10:00in his very first season
10:01okay so let me ask you this
10:04if
10:04I tell you what
10:05I'll ask you this question
10:06when we come back
10:07you do see
10:08we have some angry
10:09Red Wing fans
10:09who are still waiting
10:10on hold
10:10they want to still
10:11get their
10:12they want to get
10:13their pound of blood
10:14exactly
10:14so we'll do that as well
10:1597-1
10:16what
