00:01by the way a couple early votes for kevin mcgonigal for champ of the weekend we don't
00:05talk enough about how good this kid is we don't no we don't okay yeah i think we should talk
00:11more
00:11about how damn good he is this kid's having an unbelievable rookie season an unbelief and
00:16even if we're talking about it a lot it's still not enough he is having such an incredible season
00:23how many guys in half a year has won you over to the point where he steps to the plate
00:27you
00:27expect him to come through how about the idea that that almost looks laughable in retrospect
00:33sure he can hit but can he play the field yeah apparently he's got that down uh that was
00:41some nice plays we've seen and he's just getting started just getting started so you know you know
00:50what it does he ruins it for every other rookie that's going to come come by on his team he
00:55ruins
00:55it he's ruining it for max clark right i mean you said you're setting a standard where as a rookie
01:03you hit the ground running like he has you know next year when we get after spring training and max
01:09clark is named to this this detroit tigers roster i mean we're all expecting the same thing yeah that's
01:15right hit 280 uh with an on base percentage around 400 and play play really well in the in the
01:23field and
01:24let's go yep have an ops over 800 it's unfair and he's he's been so freaking good 817 ops a
01:32395
01:33on base percentage his ops is only going to get is going to go up as he gets more mature
01:38at the plate
01:39uh and feels more comfortable when he starts you know hitting the ball out of the ballpark with
01:44regularity he's got seven home runs this year but you know he's it looks like he's got that swing that
01:49could get you more than that might might be a 20 home run guy um and then start hitting in
01:55the gaps
01:55for more doubles like the power numbers are going to get better as he gets older but it's already
02:01fantastic where he's at that 395 on base percentage is sick 57 walks to 52 strikeouts that's that's
02:09amazing more walks than strikeouts and we're past the halfway mark he's been phenomenal for this team
02:14and he's not the only one they've had all three all-stars the three guys that made the all-star
02:19team
02:19are so deserving and i'm glad that they got that recognition three tiger hitters
02:29right let's go back to the beginning of the season if i told you that where do you think this
02:34team
02:34would be if you'd be first place in the division this team has defied logic in so many ways and
02:43it is it is one of the more mysterious detroit sports seasons i can remember they have some
02:48characteristics that look like they should be an elite team three position players on the all-star
02:53team starting pitching has been dominant hell they probably won yesterday because their defense was
02:58better than texas's texas had pass balls catchers interference that helped lead the runs you got
03:03riley green and kevin mcgonigal laying out pulling hits away from texas like they were they won
03:08yesterday one of the nuances of yesterday's game was their defense out playing texas's defense
03:14and yet here we sit with a team that probably should sell 248-539-9797 mike in richmond hello mike
03:23hey mike mike are you there mikey uh we'll check back with mike mike uh let's go to anton
03:31and farmington hills you're next hello anton gentlemen good morning how you doing what's
03:36all right good uh my biggest problem with what's going on with the world cup is uh i think var
03:43has
03:44gotten out of control uh var is almost replacing the referee in its entirety the fact that the fact
03:52that a penalty that wasn't even called a penalty on the field itself at the next stoppage of time has
03:58the ability to go back taking a look and giving a straight red is beyond me i understand if it's
04:05called a yellow and time we lost you you understand if it was called a yellow and time we lost
04:12you
04:12you understand if it's called a yellow then what'd you say yeah if i understand if the penalty on the
04:18field is called a yellow and they go back and they check the severity of it and then they upgrade
04:23it to
04:23a red card that's fine with me no different than a flag or foul in the nba you know they
04:28check for it
04:28if there's no it's egregious if it could be controlled or whatever and then they upgrade it i get it
04:34but
04:34the fact that especially for our united states player the fact of the matter is it went from zero to
04:39red
04:39and then even last night i felt like even harry kane's tackle for england they were forced to give
04:45them a red and i wouldn't be surprised if uh if that gets taken back well everything's gonna get
04:51appealed now everything's gonna get a hundred percent and and red cards red cards have always
04:56been appealed in in soccer and fifa and to be honest i don't know the statistics but so many of
05:01them get called back because you know the governing body doesn't agree most of the time because the
05:07player who receives it but the governing body doesn't agree that it should have been called a red
05:11on the field i just feel there needs to be some kind of standards or stipulations to what var can
05:17look at and what it can't no different than the nfl imagine if the eye in the sky in the
05:21nfl could
05:22just tell the referees that was a hold that was a pass interference and there's no challenges wasted
05:27there's none of that and we're just overseeing what the referees should be seeing in the first place
05:32well a couple things first of all it wasn't harry kane that got the red card that was uh jarrell
05:36quanish or quansa uh that got it not harry um he's talking about last night's game yeah okay um
05:43because it was an english player that got the red card um which was strange because when you walk
05:49watching slow motion it's a slide tackle and he hits the ball first and then his other leg
05:54goes a little bit high up on the shin of the player and that's why he was kicked out because
05:59the
05:59leg went too high which i thought wow that's weird because he i thought growing up playing soccer as
06:04long as you got the ball first before the body that you were fine but apparently it's not the
06:08case and i don't know anything about soccer so there's that uh the the comparison the nba don't
06:16they do that in the nba if they they if they don't call it a foul but they're the way
06:21in it there was
06:21something maybe we should take a look at this play well they they can upgrade yes fouls to
06:25but not just ones and twos but plays that weren't even you can call you can go repeal a play
06:30and say
06:31that that was a foul yes yeah and it's you know it's the problem with replay is and i i've
06:39struggled
06:39with replay over the years because i feel like replay coming into effect we all expect perfection
06:45and we're still complaining about calls just as much as we did before in which case i'm like just
06:50get rid of the damn thing because we it feels like we're no more satisfied and games take longer
06:55but it leads to more controversy i i don't think that there's i mean for me as a as a
07:01casual viewer
07:03the the amount of times they go to var i don't think it's a great it's not bothering you it
07:09doesn't
07:09bother me at all i was amazed when i was because i was asking people on friday i wanted the
07:14soccer
07:14elite i wanted those people to tell me what it is that i need to shut up about or what
07:19it is more
07:19importantly what that i need to learn about and i was and what it is they love about the sport
07:25what
07:25they would also change about the sport and some of the things i got in that the people were saying
07:29like the the soccer elite don't like the hydration breaks they don't like var they just want the game
07:37played straight through with without any of that stuff and i thought well that's interesting because
07:42what's wrong with getting some water here and there you know and it's code for tv commercial
07:46of course it is but they have like one per per half uh let's get to our champion champ nominations
07:53my champ of the weekend is casey mize uh for another outstanding outing worked into the seventh this is
07:58my crusade re-sign casey mize last year with the tigers he gave up 21 home runs so far this
08:04year he's
08:04given up five he gave up his fifth last time out uh casey mize has been outstanding and uh i'm
08:10a big
08:10fan and i want him back in the tiger old english d on a longer term contract my champ is
08:15riley green
08:16tigers outfield that went six for 13 over the weekend with a double triple two home runs six
08:20rbi a couple of gems on defense including the one last yesterday was spectacular if you haven't seen
08:27it and the game was on peacocks maybe you didn't i mean going to his left on a full sprint
08:33diving up
08:34in the air and and laying out to stop this line drive from going into the gap it was a
08:39fantastic catch
08:40all that while being named to his third straight all-star game becoming just the second tiger in
08:45history to do so right next to al k line amazing for for riley green okay i'm gonna do something
08:55i
08:55don't do very often but it's because i don't very often rely so much on this particular this who i'm
09:02about to chump i'm gonna chump the media to cover soccer okay the reason i am is because we need
09:08you
09:08now more than ever we need you desperately we were told there was no mechanism for reinstatement with
09:15balligan which apparently wasn't true we were told that calls don't get overturned it hasn't happened
09:21which now media members are citing all kinds of times that it's happened that red cards one has
09:26happened in the world cup others happened between qualifying and leading to the world cup that red cards
09:30but over term additionally i mean belgium immediately filed their appeal this morning nothing is final
09:37like uh so balligan may not play but i i have relied heavily on on soccer media to help us
09:46learn and be
09:47able to embrace all this and i feel like they've let us down scott that we we're if we knew
09:52right away
09:53that he could appeal it we would have just followed the appeal process and and the u.s guarding body
09:58put
09:58together an appeal and reading for the athletic today it's based upon the use of still frames in
10:03var which i guess they use too much or aren't supposed to use which helped lead to this balligan
10:08red card so you know there could be grounds for it but i you know what i do see is
10:14the rest of the
10:15world screaming i mean i made sure i got coverage from around the world and got opinions from other
10:21places europe is not happy about this at all no and it you know it being their sport they're probably
10:28right on this one but again there was an appeals process that we were told couldn't happen and it
10:35happened so uh i'm gonna jump the soccer media i'm gonna jump the florida marlins manager miami
10:42marlins manager uh clayton mccullough he pulled the starting pitcher yuri perez after he had thrown
10:51seven perfect innings on just 92 pitches took the ball from him said thanks a lot did a great job
10:59at the time the marlins led eight to nothing takes them out oakland scores five runs in the bottom of
11:11the eighth inning and scored three more in the bottom of the ninth inning they ended up losing the game
11:1598
11:15because nine to eight because miami scored in the top of the ninth but you pull the guy
11:21six outs away from a perfect game perfect games do not happen in major league baseball there are very
11:27few that have happened in major league baseball he had only thrown 92 pitches and get pulled him
