00:02The decades the big-name supermarkets have dominated the high street a weekly
00:07shot for us is like way more than it was last year but now the game has changed
00:14while it's a shrinking do you like a bargain like it's not a question that
00:18anybody needs to seriously answer and prices are soaring it's scary when I'm
00:24walking up to the tools enter the discount disruptors we take on the
00:29supermarkets by removing the friction it's Christmas
00:34cost-of-living crisis it's affecting everybody and we try and make it a
00:38little less painful it's all about being cheaper than everyone else
00:44they're making your shopping seductive we'll take it to marketing and they will
00:49start to sexify it catching your eyeline by line this is what's known as a shopper
00:53and tantalizing your taste buds with the latest trend jacking we sold 30,000
00:59last week finger on the buzzer
01:05I order from here from budget brilliance see these milkshakes for the kids
01:10they're a bargain to next big things this one is an all-time cracker they're
01:16taking us beyond the shelves unlike the supermarkets we're no fancy shelving we're
01:20no big signs there's no frills of us and behind the scenes this is where it all
01:24happens
01:26it's a box of six bars for a panic yeah I like it to reveal the secrets of super
01:33cheap shopping the bigger the sign the cheaper the price the more it's gonna sell
01:39you can beat the supermarkets
01:47coming up a bulk buying warehouse where best before means bargain not bin it I love it for me it's

01:54thrill in the chase of the next product can I get that product cheaper can I get a bargain for
01:58our
01:58customers can I put a smile on someone's face and the discount retailer with plenty to say about his
02:05latest giveaway keep filling up your basket get to the 75 quid and you'll then hit the next freebie
02:11just keep on going basically the more you spend the more we'll give it with living costs at an
02:23all-time high everyone's looking to save a buck or two it's difficult expensive life yeah people
02:30don't go out much money to spend a lot when I go in with like about 40 pound a lot
02:36I don't come out
02:37with my fair but it's not just us shoppers who are feeling the squeeze I feel like the items are
02:42getting smaller and you're paying more money so yeah I don't think there's value much value for money
02:50with operational outgoings like wages rent and shipping costs on the increase retailers have
02:55to work hard to stay ahead but one crafty company is breaking the mold
03:07in Stockport one retailer is taking on the supermarkets by using a variety of clever tactics
03:14to keep their outgoings low Rogers Wholesale have a no-frills approach and flog best-before
03:20delight at a fraction of the cost welcome to Rogers Wholesale right here in Manchester if you've never
03:26been to the UK's biggest gone past us for warehouse before where have you been get down and see us

03:31tapping into the power of social media and word of mouth they have grown to become the largest wholesale
03:37of their kind in the UK and MD Mark King has even more plans of fault to bulk up his
03:43brands
03:45this is our brand new warehouse this adds to our other three warehouses that we've got obviously in
03:50Poole Plymouth and Wolverhampton and the King's Empire seems to be growing and growing we are looking
03:57to open another two warehouses hopefully in within the next six months with the cost of living crisis going
04:02on and again harder and harder for people more and more people need these places thank you I'll bet
04:08you any money these are about 80 pence in the shops all right not with Rogers don't forget ignore the
04:11date
04:12grab a bargain that's what it's all about all right basically I used to work for somebody we used to
04:18sell
04:18cheese and we used to go out and buy cheeses from different places we would go to them and they
04:24would
04:24basically look up and say well look I've got this fantastic cheese and it's 18 months past mature
04:29now so it's basically a vintage cheddar have a try we would try it and it'd be absolutely fantastic when
04:35we then took it back to our facility and then started cutting it up the law states obviously that
04:39once you then put it down we could only put three months date on it so it was really really
04:42frustrating
04:43because often what it meant was there was a lot of wastage around now and a date driven discounting
04:48empire was born what it did make me think was well hang on if this is how this this is
04:53now on this
04:53product what about all the other products especially products that are ambient and things
04:57like that then this this whole thing's a bit silly it's all about the APs that's ambient products you
05:04know they're the cool kids of food they can sit in your cupboard and chill till you need them
05:09Mark's built a business that aims to fight food waste champion common sense and help customers snack
05:15smarter so my philosophy with um obviously uh best before is the three e's so it's educate
05:23so we're educating people about the product and then it's obviously to eradicate so we're obviously
05:28trying to stop this from going to landfill and then enjoy because it's such a cheap price why
05:32wouldn't you then enjoy it it's quite catchy that mark but it's not just traditional dry cupboard
05:37staples that are safe beyond their best before date so this is a really interesting one with mayonnaise
05:42in terms of education because people get really worried about this kind of product because of
05:46obviously having eggs in it so this actually though is a pasteurized product and because it's an ambient
05:50product it can effectively last weeks months past its best before date so even though it contains
05:56eggs it can last up to a year after its best before date and it's not just food that's packed
06:01onto pallets what's the use by on water well of course when water comes out the ground the spring
06:08i believe and you might have to fact check me it's about four million years old when it comes out
06:12the ground but when we put it in a bottle it's only got like six months best before date
06:19does it sound mad it does to me
06:24but as mad as it may seem it's the way it's packaged rather than the product itself that
06:29dictates the best before date whilst in the early days mark catered mainly for large families looking
06:35to buy in bulk in recent years he's noticed a shift in the type of shoppers seeking a snip
06:41and he calls them jams and i don't think he means the kind you spread on toast one of the
06:47biggest
06:47customer that we have is the jam so they're just about managing people so these are generally
06:51people who have a job two kids really really struggling at the moment not really getting
06:57help with benefits can't use places like food banks and things like that but the great thing
07:02about rogers is anybody can come and shop here so they can come and shop with us they can still
07:06be
07:06able to pay things like their mortgage their electric bill their ever-growing council tax bills and
07:11things like that and that's the feedback that we're getting all the time
07:2160 quid and you've got like one and a half carrier bags and you're like what have i got for
07:2560 quid
07:26i've got nothing it's just impossible to live you know for heating and electric and all that
07:32for many buying in large quantities is the perfect solution well we've seen the kenko coffee
07:42oops careful larry here's what we've come for six of these i think
07:48i drink loads of this cappuccino you'll be dancing on the ceiling with all that coffee
07:54cost you what that could cost yeah that would cost me a tenner i'm saying at least four quid
08:00so it's like half price isn't it but these bulk buy bonanzas weren't always a big enough draw
08:06in the early days no one would come anywhere near us you know i was seen as a bit of
08:10a maverick and a
08:11nutcase you know and then now people trust and know the brand how you doing now you're all right
08:15morning how you doing you're right there how's it going seems like mark's charm and discount food
08:21eventually won the naysayers round these customers they they come to me they know me
08:26they even stop me in town they stop me in coffee shops that used to happen to me all the
08:30time when
08:30i was in corrie how you doing folks all right morning we're good yeah not bad not bad i love
08:35it
08:35for me it's a thrill in the chase of the next product can i get that product cheaper can i
08:39get a bargain
08:40for our customers can i put a smile on someone's face i think that that's a thrill for me

08:53another discount disruptor has devised their own ways to sidestep soaring costs
09:01online retailer discount dragon deliver delicious deals to bargain hungry families across the country
09:09they keep prices low by buying in surplus and end-of-line products
09:14that might otherwise have ended up in landfill saving waste as well as our wallet what's not to love
09:22rule number one it's got to be a major brand do i think that would work as a special offer
09:27yes
09:27absolutely every household needs it probably what five six quid in the supermarket they're coming on
09:33website they've seen it or spend 40 quid and get it for free
09:42unlike many discounters the company have no physical stores and all the sales are done through their
09:48website every week it's down to md wayne to pick the offers that will hit his online shelves
09:57and one of his secrets for stealing supermarket customers is spaving that's a new one for me too
10:04so one of our regular offers is the spend and gets that we do i believe this is often referred
10:09to as
10:09spaving we call it spend and get it does what it says on the tin you'll spend to get there
10:14absolutely
10:15but then you're going to get your freebie these are to encourage a bigger basket make the average order
10:21value bigger and i just think it has a generally a feel-good factor you know who doesn't like
10:26something for free you've definitely caught my attention there's actually three live at any one
10:31time so the first one will get your free delivery the second one we bring in at 40 quid spend
10:3640
10:37quid and get your beauty set worth 13.50 then we have a higher tier one spend 100 quid at
10:42the moment
10:43is this whiskey gift set worth 48.25 so all in all if you're spending 100 quid with us right
10:50now
10:50you're hovering around 68 69 pounds saving that that's your spaving for today you're spending and
10:57you're saving but even at bargain basement prices some customers aren't always happy with what they get
11:06so zara has been brought in to oversee returns and she's heading up her very own department of one
11:13hi there my name's zara i'm giving you a call from discount dragon you recently made an order with
11:18us i'm just making sure you get what you want you're part of the bargain and then we make sure

11:23doing our job no worries thank you take care bye-bye positive outcome but customer satisfaction isn't
11:31zara's only motivation yeah please and then just let me know i've got this job because i've got
11:37responsibilities now i'm in my motherhood era i'm a bunny mummy this is brambo um and then that's elvis
11:53she's a female called elvis because she's got a quiff oh lovely hair see what i did there
12:01on the factory floor wayne's checking out the latest stock and deciding what might tempt customers
12:06to part with their pennies in this week's spaving promotion all right half walk all right
12:13right all right now it is the spending get at 40 pounds generally does the best for us and now
12:18what
12:18we've also started doing is layering on another one at 75 so spend your 40 quid get the beauty bundle
12:24whatever it may be on offer that day and setting thresholds like this is known as anchoring because
12:30given the option we feel anchored to spend 50 quid to save a tenner be a waste of money not
12:35to uh
12:36keep going keep going keep filling up your basket get to the 75 quid and you'll then hit the next
12:42freebie
12:42just keep on going basically the more you spend the more we'll give you
12:48we might be sick of seeing easter eggs in january halloween spooks in june
12:53and christmas biscuits in august but wayne's team buy and sell seasonal goods all year round to save
12:59their customers money ironically we're in the middle of summer it's a festive mix pack and you might say
13:06well will people buy christmas beer in the summer let me tell you yes they do you can see here
13:11there's
13:11really only one heavily featured christmas item but what would happen to this if we weren't buying it
13:17well i think there's a high chance it's getting poured down a sink basically i believe they are
13:22earmarked to go on a spend and get in the next few days uh and i would expect that once
13:27that comes
13:28and goes these are all gone but if shoppers don't go for it wayne could be stuck with a warehouse
13:33full
13:34of unwanted christmas cheer coming up the daddy of discount is branching out i still get a buzz out
13:44of seeing this new store operation and in my lifetime i probably opened at least 400 stores
13:50wayne's wish list of boozy bargains we've got vodka one vodka two then on the bench we've got the
13:57prosecco and so only alcohol yep and the cup price king shares his secrets of the super cheap keep it
14:05simple keep it so that the customer gets it keep it so the customer can understand and they know what
14:10they're going to get for their money keep it simple stupid across the nation baskets are getting smaller
14:23but shopping bills bigger just uh astronomical honest to god it's it's going up every week uh you
14:31go in prices are changing all the time it's just getting to a point where you can't afford half the
14:36stuff the traditional multiple retailers are quite expensive so if you shop around you can save quite
14:41a lot of money opening at a rate of roughly 19 stores per year since they launched in 2019
14:53one beyond have become the uk's fastest growing retailer of their kind
14:59and over at their barnsley warehouse preparations are in full swing for the launch of their latest branch
15:05in bellevale near liverpool all what you see here is going to a shop one shop and it gets put
15:11in a row
15:12ready to go but no shop is profitable without customers
15:25so local printer neil ebbage are we filming now yeah are we
15:32going to have to go to the shop one shop is helping create a buzz with some in-store collateral
15:38that's flyers to you and me so this will make an a3 sheet and then once it goes into the
15:42folder
15:43it'll fold it in half into an a4 sheet if you saw it you think oh yeah it's quite nice
15:47is that
15:47instead of like a dull color flat color you know because that's quite a distinctive blue
15:51and it's got a bright yellow so it stands out it punches out how are you so quite glossy quite
15:57bright and it just draws attention and there's a paddling pool up that page nine pound 99 28 degrees
16:04bargain unfortunately we've got no spike band on so i don't know how you're going to fill them up
16:10and whilst he cracks on with spreading the word one a3 sheet at a time chairman chris edwards is
16:17overseeing the new shop fitting plans at his 250 000 square foot distribution center
16:24just had leaflets guys new store open it hot off the press the new marketing materials have arrived
16:32this is just one of the leaflets that we do for every every new shop and this is one that's
16:37in
16:38belvale near liverpool and what we've got is just a very broad section of what we sell a lot of
16:45stuff
16:45is a is just for a pound and we hand these out in in the system in the shopping center
16:50where the
16:51store is and very rarely do we ever not open a store with a queue you know people are curious
16:56because
16:57of the kind of store that it is which is a mixed bag and the hope is that by tempting
17:01customers in
17:02with discount deals their average basket spend will increase which helps cover the costs of their
17:07cheaper items a lot of this on this leaflet a lot of it is food and sweets but we do
17:13obviously that's
17:14only a small proportion and while they're in there buying this sort of stock they're in there buying
17:19a charger or batteries or all the other stuff we sell so it's it's all just part of what we
17:25do
17:26i still get a buzz out of seeing this new store operation and what we've done and in my lifetime
17:32i probably opened at least 400 stores maybe nearly 500 stores but it's still seen when you see the
17:38new leaflet you see the date on it and you're here again you're still doing it it stops you getting
17:43bored supply chain coordinator philippa has been charged with sorting the ffe that's fixtures fittings
17:51and equipment hiya you're all right just looking for stock as it's any stock being picked for bell bell
17:58here yeah this is all your pos bits um see till rolls and stuff like that headers just everything
18:04you need for the shop that's not the sellable bit so some of this is your shopping baskets your shelving
18:11then the delivery of the stock starts and they probably will need about five or six deliveries
18:17to to fill a shop up i think this is going out on tuesday so later this week this will
18:22all get
18:22moved on to dispatch ready to go onto a wagon straight down to bellevale in in the main we can
18:27take the keys of a shop get it shot fit get it filled up with stock in opening within somewhere
18:32between two and three weeks and with hundreds of shops under his belt the process of opening shops is
18:39easy peasy do we just it's just an event we just get on with it and it happens and i'm
18:45i'm good to
18:46say i'm on the outside looking in and say oh it just happens people like this work their heart out
18:51to
18:51make it happen and philippa's not the only one working her heart out back in wigan wayne's crunching
19:01the numbers and working out which products they can afford to feature in this week's spaving promotion
19:10obviously when you're giving an item away for free you know there's um there's a cost involved
19:14that to the business we don't get these items for free we we buy them in the same way that
19:18we buy
19:19any item on the website we'll have a planning meeting which i'm going to have shortly and let's
19:23get the next seven days plan together and whilst he's preparing for his meeting rookie sara is still
19:31finding a way around the cavernous 40 000 foot warehouse and it's stacked to the rafters with bargain
19:39bounty this is all the stock all the pickers the packers i've done like stock taking and stuff but
19:46i've never worked on this scale yeah it seems absolutely massive to me there's just pallets
19:53and pallets of items and products and everything known as mass procurement the huge variety of stock
20:01sometimes tempts the staff as well as the customers i mean i do want to try that new mayonnaise what
20:07i've
20:07just seen uh monster munch i'd like to try that there might be a huge warehouse to choose from but
20:15for
20:15wayne and tom deciding which items to promote in their spaving deal takes careful consideration
20:22right i just wanted to see the uh plan for the spending gets this week obviously we need one at
20:2740
20:28quid and then 75 to 100 because the whiskey did really well at 100 didn't it yeah higher-end spaving
20:35products create the free effect and feel like a bargain that's too good to miss but if the freebie
20:42doesn't land with the punters all the planning and marketing is wasted manpower we discussed on the
20:48call this morning the marmalade vodka yeah where's it go yeah we've got the marmalade vodka um i don't
20:55know what else we've got it's the high end it's so hard to fill you got that vodka there yeah
20:59that's
20:59a good one my only concern is that when it's two vodkas if it fails do you want to put
21:06another vodka
21:06in there knowing that the first one failed we've still got the prosecco in there on the uh subs bench
21:13no yeah are they warming up are they warming up some prosecco's been warming up for a couple of
21:17weeks now warm fizz oh that'll never catch on wayne just can't get a game can i know yeah he's
21:24trying
21:24his hardest i'd go with the marmalade vodka if if that flops i'd bring that off the bench before the
21:30other vodka that's 75 pound throw yeah yeah just to wrap it all up and sum it up we've got
21:35vodka one
21:35vodka two then on the bench we've got the prosecco so only alcohol for now i think with that plan
21:42with the stock levels as well that should cover us for the for the rest of the week you might
21:45want
21:46to add some paracetamol to that list meanwhile in stockport rogers have a totally different approach
21:55to discount dragon instead of marketing and sexifying goods online their warehouse is open to
22:02buyers who can come and grab what they want but this is not your usual supermarket shopping experience
22:08we're no fancy shelving we're no big signs it's no frills of us it's literally left on the palette
22:14products are actually made to sit in warehouses for quite a long long time that's why we can
22:19manage to keep it cheap keep it simple um and also still pay the overheads we have no music playing
22:25so we because we don't want to pay for an expensive prs license keeping costs low is music to my
22:30ears
22:31well not in this case we don't have any heating so in the winter you need to wear your coat
22:36but the good
22:36thing is the drinks are chilled for free and obviously in the summer it can be quite warm
22:40and here we don't have air conditioning here presentation is more gritty than glossy so
22:46there's efficiencies in if we think we do because if you had to put this out on the shelf you're
22:50going
22:50to be taking this out you're going to be paying a member of staff to shelf stack this we don't
22:54bother with any of that we literally push the product into place and this srp that shelf ready
22:59packaging to you and me offers a cheap and cheerful way to present their wares we take out a couple
23:04so
23:04the customer can see what they're having and it's as quick as setting the product out showing
23:09you what you got and then we move on by keeping out going slow his back to basics approach helps
23:14keep prices low see these milkshakes for the kids they're a bargain yeah we've got cupboards full
23:20of it kids come around we don't give them a milkshake we give them a bag of it take it
23:23home and do it
23:23yourself keep it simple keep it so that the customer gets it keep it so the customer can understand and
23:30they
23:30know what they're going to get for their money keep it simple stupid simple as that and whilst
23:36customers appreciate the simple approach his competitors have got different ideas i don't
23:42think we necessarily liked in wholesale industry because we're not like other wholesalers in respect
23:46that we don't need to know anything about our customer we're not asking to be a member we're not
23:51asking them to shop at certain times and you know and with us the price you see is the price
23:54you pay
23:54all i want to know is you come in and you've got a means of payment and that's all i
23:58require by
23:59tearing up the rule books mark is able to compete with the supermarkets whilst others have failed
24:05have i broken the mold well if i have i don't know whether that makes me a genius i don't
24:09know i don't
24:10get it but personally it works for us it works for our customers and that's what it's about we're

24:46his decades of discount dealing i came across this this picture that's the original market stall where
24:55it all started getting your five a day from the big name supermarkets doesn't come cheap with the
25:07average brit spending over 400 pounds a year on fruit and veg all the prices are going up a tin
25:14of sweet
25:14corn it's two pound and it like you could use to be able to get that for 60p price supermarket
25:19vegetables is it's too high you're trying to encourage them to be healthy but you're making
25:24it a little bit inaccessible the price of them is slowly increasing and these are stuff that you
25:30know we need to eat to be healthy and to have balanced diets but we can't
25:39growl one solution growing in popularity is gleaning
25:46and clubs are springing up across the country which help connect people like me and you with farmers
25:53like chris molyneux it must be at least 10 years we've been cleaning now it just helps everybody
25:59he'll let you have his surplus crops for free as long as you're happy to get down and dirty and
26:04pick it yourself it's a way to use surplus product it would go to waste otherwise
26:13jay godden is the coordinator of a gleaning club in lancaster so we've seen demand kind of been
26:20steadily increasing since 2021 really we're not a food bank we run a membership model so people pay
26:26a weekly fee to access and what we do but it's it's cheaper than the supermarket the idea is that
26:33a lot of the kale that we've got here is not going to be harvested there's too much of it
26:39so we bring
26:39some volunteers in we pick as much as we can and then we redistribute that into the community
26:46he organizes teams of volunteers to collect kale both for themselves and their fellow members
26:54we'll be going for this curly kale we can be pretty picky about what we're getting obviously we've got
27:00like a whole acre here and we're not going to be picking all of that so something that sort of
27:05size
27:05is probably fine at the small end maybe that kind of at the larger end okay fab let's do it
27:15it's estimated that over a million tons of fruit and veg is wasted each year on uk farms i think
27:22there's about an acre and a half here we've had to leave which i think it's bad really considering
27:26we've had some decent weather now and we've got loads of crops so and so it's so you have to
27:33plan
27:33assuming that the weather's going to be bad because you still need to be making a living even if it's
27:37a
27:37bad year don't you you just gotta weather's good you just don't know you just don't know you can get
27:4250 cent more or 50 percent less or just nothing yeah i mean last year we didn't have a crop
27:47so you
27:47make sure you've got enough to cook yourself and of course guaranteed nature's gonna go do you know
27:51what we're gonna loads this year which is where you guys come in yeah well we appreciate it yeah
27:58for volunteers like cath going field to fork isn't just about filling her plate i love coming for the
28:05greens because it's fun to be outside and doing something useful and there are a lot of people
28:09who don't have access to good quality food for various reasons despite today's kale force wins
28:16the volunteers have been outstanding in their fields it's been a really good day today we've already
28:23got about 30 or so crates like this 30 40 but the sun's out so we're going to have our
28:28sandwiches and
28:29then back to it finish filling up the van whilst chris's kale was fresh from the field back at buck's
28:40mill it's freebies of a different kind on offer ai novice nile has been charged with designing the
28:47online promo so i'm just doing a vodka marmalade promotion so this is going on the free on us when
28:55you spend 85 they might have 200 000 website visitors a month but it's all about the purchase
29:02not the ponder so it's down to the marketing team to make those click rate conversions create an image
29:10similar to this please always use your manners with ai because you don't know when it's going to come

29:26look the detail the water yeah yeah actually on an angle yours isn't yeah and the hand might have

29:47designs into disasters so you've got to keep an eye on the wording really ai can mess it up a

30:07the problem with ai it's um it's lacking in the real hand i'm happy yeah i'm gonna go with mine

30:24whilst nile is relying on ai to get product out the door over in liverpool one beyond accounting
30:31on customers coming through theirs they've been popping up on our high streets and retail parks
30:36since 2019 i'm doing well we only came in here for one thing and we end up with half a
30:42shop
30:44and whilst most retailers are closing their physical stores chairman chris edwards is expanding
30:51opening about two new shops a month
30:55we've got 100 and odd shops now and we're just making the decision should we go forward with more
31:00shops or should we stay where we are or should we pack it in and uh my boat was we'll
31:07carry on
31:07opening shops that's the only thing i know i haven't had no plan to retire i couldn't think of anything
31:12worse you've got to keep the brain cells working otherwise you'd get all too quick he's been brought
31:19up around his family's market stall since he was eight it's safe to say discount dealing is in his blood
31:26that's uh the original market stall where it all started chris's discount i'm very proud of that
31:32name he looks a bit ragged i mean a lot of stuff on there which you can't really make out
31:36is is
31:37is still in our shops to this day the sellotape 13 amp plugs buckets bowls umbrellas double adapters
31:44kettles and bear in mind that was a probably the early 70s still selling the same bloody stock
31:50that's how much imagination we haven't got whilst chris reminisces about the past
31:5760 miles down the road in liverpool it's all about the future as chris's latest store is just
32:03hours away from opening you want to just concentrate on tidying all the station view for me all the way
32:08down for us if you would just make sure it's all as it was all the way down yeah they've
32:14only had
32:14two weeks to make sure the store's customer ready chris is coming uh so yeah it's a bit of pressure
32:21but it's it's one unwelcoming with everything to consider from merchandising to staff badges
32:28retail rollout is a massive job right unfortunately this is our office it's not the best but hey ho at
32:38the back of the house assistant manager jackie has been charged with training the 15 new starters
32:44everyone got one got an induction pass before we get started i want to say welcome to one beyond
32:51absolute brilliant company to work for somebody's after a pay rise do more tool training now so you're
32:59waiting for yeah okay it's all hands on deck known as snagging in retail there's no room for hiccups
33:06the smoother the prep the slicker the launch we've got more tool training going on and then we've got
33:11more inductions being done downstairs so by 10 o'clock we'll be absolutely ready
33:17and with chris arriving any second and scarcely any customers outside kev's feeling the heat
33:24it's only early though isn't it school hold it where's everybody else
33:29it's all the girls just run downstairs in the canteen all the toilets are the till coats working
33:35yes i don't know to be honest i look just what i need there's a few people here now
33:4312 o'clock it'll be round yeah it will with the kids being on holiday there's a lot of families

33:48the area isn't there so everyone's going to sort of be up later and then they'll come out shopping in

34:21and nerves are running high at the liverpool launch day yeah we're all ready to go looks

34:42it's been a 40 mile trip for the kale that's been foraged by the lean mean gleaning machines on the
34:48molyneux farm now it's finally arrived at the lancaster larder food club we're currently setting up
34:56tables so that our members can all sit together we like to make it an informal place and we provide
35:04cheap accessible healthy food for members of our local community managed by mighty matriarch catherine
35:12it's one of several food clubs across north lancashire our muscles packed by the end of tonight
35:17with up to 70 people expected through the door she relies on her army of volunteers

35:27theresa boz can have a couple of empty green trees please so what's on the menu today
35:35kale for everyone this week we have kale which has been gleaned we also have mushrooms and peppers
35:43potatoes lots of things will make good healthy food the kale that we have is much better valued
35:48than supermarkets because here people take exactly what they need it's often wonky but it's always
35:55fabulous and fresh thanks to jay and his glean team the food club never quite know what fresh produce will
36:02arrive next every week it changes so when the food comes in everybody has no idea what they're going to
36:08so it's always a really big surprise we have fresh tomatoes we have celery the club collects surplus
36:16food from local food businesses such as supermarkets food manufacturers and wholesalers just all sorts of
36:22things it's different every week and a pick and mix of ingredients results in some inventive outcomes
36:29we share recipes between each other lots of people come up with lots of ideas including chocolate avocado
36:35cake which went down quite well um with a good use of avocados yes your paper this week the center
36:43operates on a membership basis and all for a bargain price of a fiver a week it's much expensive for
36:52me
36:52in the supermarket but here everything is very cheap the value we get for our money is absolutely
37:00ridiculous to be honest i mean it's enough for me to live on for the week which is just amazing
37:05and if you fancy getting involved organizations like family action coordinate food clubs across
37:12the country but it's not just a bargain members come for you like you can socialize with everybody
37:19you can get a cup of tea and a piece of cake and sit and talk
37:25we'll start calling people up so they can come and choose from what we have got this evening

38:33so we brought the marmalade vodka in at the 85 pound threshold so we took whiskey off and we
38:39brought marmalade vodka in and we saw on the 8th of july when we brought it in that our average

38:45over 100 pound were four and a half percent and compared to our average orders over 100 pound with
38:50the whiskey which was eight percent uh so we quickly took the the marmalade vodka off and put
38:55the whiskey back on because we found it was much more effective not a wasted exercise if we were
38:59continuing with the spending gets i don't think that would feature again you know we're putting our
39:03necks on the line giving away a high cost item we're respecting the item but i don't think the
39:08item showed us any respect back you know it didn't say i'll go i'm going to go out there and
39:12get you these

41:17opening in less than an hour danielle's going outside to the front entrance now yeah danielle's
41:22doing leaflets everything's finally in place after a hectic two-week turnaround
41:29but they're bracing themselves for the arrival of their meticulous chairman chris edwards
41:34very very detail centric so i think as he's going around he really has got that key knife
41:39for detail he wouldn't be where he is without that um without that skill so i'm really looking
41:43forward to hearing his feedback as well looking for anything that we can obviously improve on but
41:48i'm relatively confident we've we've nailed this one today and having opened over 400 shops in his
41:55time he knows exactly what it takes to get it right when you're in a business like this you've got
42:00to be on the ball with everything that's just running a business and there's nothing new yeah

42:27new stores so i really like this from the obviously the latest promotion we've kind of
42:32pushed all these one pound products in front of the store we're absolutely lovely and full tidy
42:37fully priced lovely and clean i think it's the range on like every day essential products
42:44and using economies of scale chris sources products at the lowest possible prices
42:50how they're going oh that's absolutely sensational all the competitors are more expensive it's lovely
42:54chocolate as well has anybody actually counted how many items i know we've got seasonal items that
43:01come in due course and all that stuff but today when you look at a shop like this how many

43:06will we have talk about putting them on the spot has anybody thought how many thousand yeah seven
43:13thousand and maybe eight thousand seven thousand nailed it yeah that's nice so far yes it's looking
43:20looking good yeah we're very proud you can never tell whether it's going to be a good shop or a

43:27shop until you actually get open get over the first two or three weeks when the newness wears off
43:31and see what you're taking to see whether we've made a good choice or not you know it's a bit

43:36because we're in a different shopping center it'd be buzzing outside by now but it's uh half past nine
43:42and it's a bit quiet you know so uh it'll all come together hopefully it amazes me how we can

43:50standard you know in such a short time and uh we're just ready to go and it looks good to

43:56but you need good people like we're talking here with these two fellas you know there um you know you
44:02need good people behind you you can't do it all yourself this is what we will aim to look like
44:07every day now when i come back in two weeks will it still look the same well that's the challenge
44:11isn't it i think obviously the manager's challenge yes that is always looks like smiles all round
44:18they're filling me with a lot of confidence as far as management's concerned they haven't got one

44:52or walk through the doors and that's our customers thank you like any new store their success is
45:00determined by the ring of the tills and a healthy crowd has finally formed awaiting the grand reveal
45:07so we don't have to try that'll be great okay we're now open
45:14a surge of savvy shopping scouts is hoping to bag a bargain or two
45:22great yeah it looks nice yeah yeah we need to fight for every penny really you know there's a lot
45:28of competition around we just need to keep it going and you know make people feel welcome every time
45:33they come in this is another example of an old customer coming back not old old i mean ex-customer
45:43need a spade kev every penny counts now every penny counts i mean everything's you know so expensive but
45:52when you've got a store like this it's worth coming into finally kev can breathe a sigh of relief really
45:59good response of people uh they're happy with the range of lines we've got in store um and they've
46:06been making quite a lot of purchase been been nice and steady all morning like chris is even doing a
46:10bit of merchandising there yeah since we've reopened after pound world the high street is definitely
46:18different it's a lot more low-key it's not the same but it's customers out there if you're giving them
46:24value for money and cheaper prices mean happy customers at the moment i've only picked a dog
