00:01Hello, welcome to the CV's Flight Channel.
00:11Inside Ford Field, downtown Detroit, Michigan, 250A Group, qualifier number two is up next.
00:19They're on the line, going to drop the gate for this practice start.
00:23Cole Davies was your fastest qualifier earlier today.
00:25Seth Hammaker was second. We're fueled by Kroger as we get things rolling here in Group A.
00:31Qualifier number two AC for the 250s.
00:33That's one of my favorite parts of the day.
00:35And our statistician, Brett Smith, let us know the fastest times from 2025 came in section number two here in
00:43Weege.
00:44The track crew got in and groomed the whoops a little bit for this one.
00:47I don't know if they laid them down or what, but I think the times are coming from here.
00:50How bad were they in session one? Were they tough?
00:52They look tough. Yeah, once they got a little bit edgy.
00:57Here we go. A little practice start. See where the starts are going to come from.
01:01AC, you mentioned in the track map, unique first turn, a right-handed first turn.
01:06Let's see who gets there first. I know it's just a practice start, but these riders take a lot out
01:10of this.
01:13Daxton Benick with an amazing jump, but that inside, this inside is going to be at a premium here because
01:20you always got to look, as you say all the time too, J.B., you got to look at the
01:24second turn.
01:24The second turn also goes right, so you want to be on the inside going into that first 180-degree
01:30bowl corner.
01:31We'll say, Weege, this is maybe the best version of Daxton Benick that we have seen.
01:35Look, he's podiumed in every single first round that he's done.
01:38Yeah.
01:38Then injuries have plagued him in seasons past, but he's riding really well.
01:43Well, the whole key for him is to get it to happen on Saturday, and I know every rider says
01:48that, but Dax, maybe more so, right?
01:50How many times have we heard flying at the test track?
01:52Every year.
01:53From Benick?
01:54Yes.
01:54I talked to him this morning.
01:55He said, Moogies, I've been towing him around.
01:59Malcolm Stewart has been off of his pace because they're the only two riding right now, Aaron Plessinger banged up
02:05and R.J. Hampshire out.
02:06They're riding together at Baker's Factory.
02:08That's how fast he's riding during the week.
02:10They're just hoping it happens on a Saturday.
02:12Well, I will say, Dax and Benick, North Carolina kid, I went to his house when he was 14 years
02:17old and watched him ride Supercross,
02:19and I called Nathan Ramsey right when I was leaving that place, and I said,
02:22you've got to sign this kid to a long-term deal.
02:25This kid is special, and that was at 14 years old.
02:28Well, Nathan Ramsey's got him back, this Rockstar Energy Factory Husqvarna ride.
02:33I think they make a great team.
02:35And the dad, Todd, his dad is hoping they're trying to unlock that.
02:40Well, he got a podium.
02:41This is one of those tracks where he got one of those podiums years ago,
02:44so there may be tonight's tonight here in Detroit.
02:48Got Hamaker here.
02:50Yeah, and that's so tough.
02:51You see there's so much loose dirt on top of that tabletop right there.
02:55These 250s having to land and just super high RPM and pop the clutch.
03:00We saw Caden Dundee briefly on screen getting that off.
03:03It's going to be very important for these 250 guys to get that back tire over the off.
03:08All right, here we go.
03:09The number 10 of the Monster Energy Pro Circuit, Kawasaki.
03:12Seth Hamaker on a fast lap.
03:13He elects to go all the way around the outside, carries a ton of entry speed.
03:18And he got held up a little bit there.
03:19He's going to bork this lap.
03:20And any time you're able to change direction in the whoops,
03:24he started on the right-hand side, ended up on the left-hand side
03:27to have a little more radius for the turn,
03:29and to miss that extra whoop on the inside,
03:31any time you can move around a little in the whoops,
03:34you know that you're feeling confident in yourself and the bike.
03:38Interesting to see this section right here.
03:40On the inside, there's a little single before the tabletop.
03:42Puts you in a totally different rhythm lane than going to the outside,
03:46jumping what they kind of have, a wall-like tabletop.
03:49Puts you in a totally different rhythm lane.
03:51You'll see Joe Shimoda nailing the whoops right there.
03:54Shimoda sits seventh overall so far.
03:56He's on a fast one right here, though, Weech.
03:58And as you folks mentioned at the beginning of the show,
04:01that's not normally what you see from Shimoda.
04:03Certainly not the first qualifier.
04:05Maybe a little better, as you were saying, Adam, as the track gets rougher.
04:07But you don't usually see Shimoda's best stuff, but he looks pretty good right now.
04:11He normally excels in the conditions that often when you try harder, you go slower.
04:17So that's why Joe is so good when the track breaks down.
04:20He relies on finesse and technique.
04:22But when you have a track like this with so much traction, not that technical,
04:26where you can just go out there and go 120%, and it translates to good speed,
04:31that is not what Joe does well.
04:33But I do love the intensity I'm seeing right now.
04:36Let's see what that lap time was from Shimoda.
04:3853.6.
04:41So far, the fastest here in qualifier number two.
04:44As Cole Davies goes to the top.
04:46He said a 53.
04:47Watch this.
04:4851.8 from the points leader, Cole Davies.
04:52Wow.
04:52And there is what we've seen with Davies.
04:55And we've all been talking about it behind the scenes.
04:57But Davies has been a little bit slower than this man on your screen on the rest of the track,
05:03besides the whoops.
05:04So, but Davies, he has the talent.
05:06He has the ability to figure out the turns, the other areas of the track.
05:10And so if I'm these guys right now, I'm not banking.
05:13I'm not banking on being faster than Cole Davies on the rest of the track.
05:17He's going to get it figured out in the turns.
05:20So, exactly what you were talking about, Seth, about if he can get a little bit closer in the whoops,
05:26I think that will be imperative to his championship hopes.
05:29Handmaker on a fast one right now.
05:31You can tell by the intensity.
05:33He opens up this turn right there.
05:35He goes on up and likes not to go off.
05:37That was smart because he landed kind of on the side knobby of the tires when he jumped up on
05:43that tabletop.
05:43And if he would have gave it a lot of glass, gas, and popped the clutch, he could have had
05:48that back end step out,
05:50and it would have been game over.
05:51So, not a bad play.
05:53Check out this entry speed right here.
05:55Pay attention to his left foot.
05:56Shifts up right there, and it looks like he shifts up again on the third or fourth whoop.
06:00I've never seen that before.
06:01I've never seen that.
06:02I was talking to New Jersey last year.
06:04Michael Byrne taught him that.
06:06Use that first whoop.
06:09As the bike is airborne, try to grab one more gear.
06:12That's crazy.
06:12That was unbelievable as he looked like he grabbed third gear out of the turn,
06:17and then he grabbed potentially fourth gear over that first or second whoop.
06:22Wow, that was special from Seth Hamaker.
06:24Yeah, I was talking about that.
06:26In New Jersey, he was hitting the whoops in fifth last year, but that is a split second.
06:30The amount of time that you have between hitting whoop the first time you hit and the second.
06:35And I can tell you what, you better be very confident that you get the bike completely into gear
06:41when you're shifting in the whoops.
06:43Oh, boy.
06:44That's high risk.
06:45That's a very high risk play.
06:47That's like shifting up like they used to do when they were riding 125s back in the day
06:51to get the triples back then.
06:53They used to have to shift from second to third on the face.
06:57That's about today's equivalent, sketchy-wise.
07:02Yeah, you better get that right.
07:03Yeah.
07:04How about this, man?
07:05The 25, Monster Energy, Yamaha Star Racing's Nate Thrasher.
07:10Look, he's won a race in basically every year that he's been a professional week.
07:13He's yet to win one this season.
07:15Looks like he has more pace today in Detroit than he's had all season long.
07:21Third so far, 53.5.
07:23Let's see what this lap time is.
07:25That time around was a 53.5.
07:28So 53.0 is his best around the track.
07:34Can Thrasher get one, AC?
07:35Can he get a win this year?
07:36Not with what I've been seeing as of late.
07:39I know he's been struggling with the shoulder injury, and I think he just needs, just like
07:43Caden Dunney, he needs a decent one that he can build on, kind of freeze him up a little
07:48bit.
07:48But he hasn't been anywhere near race-winning speed as of late, dealing with the shoulder
07:54injury.
07:54We know he has the talent to do that.
07:57He just needs to get the ball rolling in the right direction.
08:0053 of Henry Miller on screen right here.
08:05His teammate, Derek Kelly, in the top five right now.
08:08So shout out to the 77 of Derek Kelly as Joe Shimoda's on a fast one.
08:12Shimoda's seventh right now.
08:14Can he better his time?
08:15He's got a 53.6.
08:17It's so interesting watching Joe Shimoda ride, because whether he's on the top of the board
08:23or whether he's in seventh, he always looks the same to me.
08:27Like his riding, whether he's comfortable, uncomfortable, tired, injured, whatever, it's
08:33like his technique, the way he rides the bike, it stays the same.
08:38It's so hard to know actually how fast he's going, because sometimes he is the fastest guy
08:43on track, but he makes it look so easy, you can't tell.
08:47How about the 89 of Devin Simonson at Club MX Yamaha Wheats?
08:51He's having a career year, and now look at that qualifying time, 52.9.
08:56He's third.
08:56I was talking to Brett Smith there, our statistician, and as much as the results at the end of the
09:02night have improved this year, the qualifying has been even a bigger problem for Simonson
09:06in the past.
09:07So being up there, top five early, now third, this is a massive improvement.
09:11And he's going for it again.
09:13I love that he's third.
09:15Look at the speed around the corner there.
09:17The fact that he's in third and he still wants more, that says a lot about where he sees
09:23himself fitting into this class right now.
09:25In years past, he goes up there, puts it in third place.
09:28He probably is like, man, this is awesome.
09:31Let's go back to the truck.
09:32But the fact that he thinks he left some speed on the table says a lot about what he's been
09:37able to do this season.
09:38He is fast right now.
09:42Looking so good.
09:4352.9.
09:45Look at that gap.
09:45But look at the top two guys.
09:4651.6, 51.7 from Davies and Hamaker.
09:50Simonson and Kelly.
09:51Derek Kelly.
09:52Quarter speed there from Simonson.
09:54Just laying that thing over.
09:56Let's see what this time is.
09:58Can he better his 52.9?
10:01Goes across the finish.
10:0352.4.
10:04So he does.
10:05He gets another fast one.
10:06Wow.
10:08This guy's for real, Weege.
10:10Hey, it's all about discipline.
10:12We may or may not have been invited to a dinner.
10:14The Club of X team last night.
10:15Simonson was there.
10:17Dessert plate came around.
10:19Did not indulge.
10:20So it's all about the discipline for Devin Simonson right now.
10:23I mean, what a massive improvement that he has done with that Club of X team.
10:28Third basket.
10:29Yeah, he looks incredible right now.
10:31Daxton Benick on screen.
10:32And we're going to get into it at some point, AC.
10:34But you owe Devin Simonson a jersey, I believe.
10:37There you see Daxton Benick.
10:38Very frustrated.
10:39Must have been on a really fast one.
10:43Dudney goes to fourth.
10:45As Seth Hamaker on screen.
10:48Looks like he's aggressive, Weege.
10:49He's on a fast one.
10:50He needs one-tenth of a second.
10:54Definitely feels he can do it.
10:55That was the point I made at the top of the show.
10:56He has been right behind Davies going across the line the last couple of races.
11:00Certainly still feels like it could be his year.
11:03Oh, Cody Shock.
11:06Almost went down.
11:07Did mess up Hamaker's momentum a little bit.
11:09He goes a little long on that triple.
11:12What's he able to do?
11:14Last up.
11:1552.4.
11:1651.7 is his best.
11:19But I think even with Shock getting in his way a little bit like that,
11:22I'm not sure that was going to be faster than his best time.
11:26Joe Shimoda back at it.
11:2711th right now.
11:2853.5.
11:30Don't be alarmed.
11:30He will absolutely be in the mix tonight.
11:32Qualifying not his forte.
11:34And you saw that coming out of the corner.
11:36Going into the whoops.
11:37Just didn't carry enough speed into the whoops to make it to the end.
11:42You saw his rear tire.
11:43He started to spin.
11:44And often you want to get on the gas harder in the middle of the whoops on these 250s.
11:49But you get on the gas harder.
11:50The tire spins more.
11:51And you go down.
11:52It was an okay pass.
11:54But not a qualifying P1 pass, I would say.
11:57So he comes up just a little bit short on that on-off.
12:00Cole Davies, bottom right of your screen, just threw down a 51.8.
12:03So just two-tenths of a second off of his fast lap.
12:06It's always nice to see his second best time.
12:09Let's see what Joe Shimoda's time is.
12:11Can he better his 53.5?
12:12He does.
12:13He goes 53.1.
12:15A little bit faster for the number 30 Honda HRC Progressive ride.
12:19See Caden Dudney working the left side of that option.
12:22Going double onto the tabletop.
12:24Seems like most of the fast guys are cutting down in that turn and going three on.
12:29I like to see him getting a little creative out there.
12:31It's a good lap so far.
12:33I think this is where a lot of time is coming from.
12:35That on-off, if you can get it clean like that, then go triple.
12:38That's what Cole Davies and Seth Hamaker are both doing.
12:41I think Caden Dudney was able to nail it as well.
12:4452.8.
12:45Can he better that time?
12:47Nice in the finish.
12:49Oh, that was so cool.
12:50The way that he landed standing up still.
12:53It's important in that little 90 before the finish line there.
12:56It's important off the triple to make sure you land with your back tire kicked out to the right a
13:02little bit.
13:02Angled with the turn.
13:04You can see Seth Hamaker frustrated right there.
13:06Wasn't able to get that on-off of the table.
13:09A guy was in his way.
13:10He's still elected to stay in the lap.
13:12Let's see what it is.
13:14Last lap around 52.6 for Seth Hamaker.
13:17He's on another fast one.
13:18Oh, and that was a great pass right there.
13:21Weegee said he's going to work on the whoops.
13:23And so far today, JB, I don't know.
13:24You're the whoop guy.
13:25But tell me.
13:26Looks like a lot better passes.
13:28More momentum to me for Seth coming in.
13:30Look, if you're trying to search for more speed and you're shifting up in the whoops,
13:35I'm saying you're pretty confident.
13:37You're feeling pretty good about it.
13:39Now, Seth told me the problem for him, he's found, is trying to find that balance in the early laps.
13:44He's very pumped with how the last five minutes of these races have been going.
13:47He's really tried not to throw it away, not be too aggressive early, not dig a hole.
13:52Happened again.
13:53That section has been tough.
13:55I think it's worth three or four tenths, I think, right there.
13:58Just that section, if you could get that clean onto the table, off, triple into the turn, it's worth a
14:03lot of time.
14:03And that'll be on his mind, too, going into tonight.
14:06Because you want to do the fastest line on the track, of course.
14:10But if you're not confident that you can do it every time, if you do that and you make a
14:14big mistake,
14:15it could be, you know, it could be a big hit in the championship.
14:18So that will be a little added stress for Seth going into the night program.
14:23How about that man right there in his sophomore season?
14:26Cole Davies will get his second career fast qualifier win.
14:31His first was last year in Arlington.
14:33This is his second here in Detroit.
14:3551 points.
