00:30He's had such a crazy journey over the past few years, and we're going to get into that a little
00:37bit later today.
00:38But he's in podium form, JB.
00:41We've seen flashes of speed.
00:43He's been consistently in that 5-10 spot.
00:46But I think by watching him ride, just purely the eye test, I do believe he has a chance to
00:52get on the podium tonight.
00:54His starts are good. His speed is good.
00:56The setup's dialed. He's got that factory transmission now.
00:59So, all is pointing in the right direction for the 17.
01:02And finally, I could not leave out the technical conditions that we have here in Indianapolis.
01:08This is going to be extremely tough for these guys throughout practice, throughout the races,
01:14to not make the mistakes, to adapt to the conditions.
01:18It's a tough racetrack, JB.
01:19I don't know if we've said it so far today, but we're happy to be in the booth and watching
01:23these guys go to work.
01:25Absolutely happy to be here.
01:26And great job from our cameraman getting the ruts right here.
01:29It just shows you, brings you down to the track with these riders because this is very, very difficult.
01:34We can say it all day long, but it is absolutely very, very difficult.
01:38450 Group A, qualifier number one, gets rolling here.
01:41We're fueled by Kroger.
01:42Here's your championship points leader, Hunter Lawrence.
01:46Conditions like this, when you think about the course of the season, he's become quite a closer.
01:51The more the track breaks down, the better Hunter Lawrence gets.
01:54And Eli Tomac, with his eighth win in Daytona last weekend, he made all the passes, did all the right
02:00things.
02:00He was the best guy.
02:02But if you notice the last lap of the main event in Daytona, when the track was at its worst,
02:08Hunter Lawrence set the fastest lap time of the race.
02:11And I really think as we get into this East Coast portion of the championship, where these tracks break down
02:17so much towards the end of the race,
02:19I think that's what Hunter Lawrence, I think that's where he really excels.
02:23He really shines late in these races.
02:26So I think this condition for a technical closer like Hunter Lawrence, this is exactly what he needed to potentially
02:34get his second win of the season.
02:35Well, we're already seeing the 96 do different lines than anyone else did in that 250 Group A qualifier number
02:42one.
02:42He's wheeling into that rhythm lane.
02:44He goes 3-3-3 all the way through there, down the right side, drifts to the left to open
02:48up that turn.
02:49That was nice.
02:50It was, and it's so difficult.
02:51But you could technically be perfect on the bike coming into the whoops in the right gear, feet in the
02:57right spot, strong body position.
02:59As Hunter is trying to shorten up the track there, go way inside.
03:03But it is so difficult to not get the rear end to step out on you in the whoops.
03:08You're going to see those guys fishtailing the back end, going to the right, to the left all day.
03:13Absolutely.
03:13I love that line that Hunter Lawrence did going inside.
03:16You're not able to do that at most tracks.
03:17That just shows you how grippy, how soft the conditions are.
03:21I believe that's the number 32 of Justin Cooper on a fast stop.
03:23These conditions, they could suit the number 32 as well.
03:27They could, absolutely.
03:28The whoops here are definitely going to turn into jumpers.
03:31I would say 80% of the field is going to be jumping these whoops about halfway through the first
03:37main event.
03:38So be interested to see how Justin Cooper gets through that section here in practice like we're about to see
03:43right now.
03:43But this guy has some of the best corner speed in the class.
03:47And he's been riding well this year.
03:49You see him already working the jump line, 3-3-3.
03:53And that's going to take a lot of stress away from his race tonight to know that he can rely
03:58on that jump line every single time and it being a similar pace to skimming.
04:03That looked like a really fast lap.
04:05Let's see.
04:05He goes to the top, 45.9.
04:08First rider in the 45s in the 450 division here so far.
04:13And Justin Cooper, it's so impressive.
04:15Look, we talk about him skimming the whoops.
04:17He's not the best guy at skimming the 94.
04:19We could argue that one of the best guys at skimming.
04:21But the way he can jump when the whoops are fairly new like they are is just so impressive.
04:25As a 94, we talked about him off the top.
04:27Four wins here in Indianapolis just a couple years ago.
04:31Was able to get the win.
04:33That was when Kickstart Kenny was born.
04:35I remember I was in that race, gave him a big old hug when we were done.
04:39And I love Ken has some of the best technique in the game.
04:43And if you guys will notice, pay attention to Ken and how quick he gets his feet, both feet, back
04:48on the foot pegs on exit of these turns.
04:51Very difficult on a 450 when you have this much traction.
04:55The bike feels like it's 200 horsepower.
04:57So getting your feet back on the pegs early is key to control the bike on exit.
05:01You see Eli Tomac taking a little break right there.
05:04A little balance.
05:04You know, he's got some balancing skills on the number three.
05:08He's sitting fourth overall here so far as Ken Rockson trying to set up a fast lap.
05:13There's that triple out of the corner.
05:14Now, 450 is no problem at all.
05:16250, the more the race goes on, especially later on tonight.
05:20We're talking race number two, maybe even race number three.
05:23The more they cut down, that's going to get really, really difficult as the night goes on.
05:27And when we talk about technical racetracks, we've got to mention the 46.
05:31And he's been good lately.
05:33He's been quietly getting better.
05:35A top ten in Daytona last week.
05:36You see him make a mistake trying to go low in the corner before the finish line.
05:41But still goes to second even with that mistake.
05:44He probably lost two or three tenths of a second just in the last turn.
05:47But I called this before we came on air, JB, the 46, ninth last weekend in Daytona,
05:53his best finish of the season.
05:55And he's had great results here in the past.
05:57I remember racing him here.
05:59And he is one of the most technical riders we have on the track.
06:03But, Justin Hill, you never quite know what you're going to get on any given Saturday.
06:08But it looks like he came to play.
06:09Absolutely.
06:10He's as good as anybody when he shows up, wants to race at the front.
06:14Hunter Lawrence on your screen right now.
06:16He's fifth with a 46.5.
06:18Still on top, Justin Cooper with a 45.5.
06:22Still the only one in the 45.
06:23Now, he's got two times in the 45 second range as Hunter Lawrence takes a little break.
06:27Checks up at the big screen.
06:29I'm sure there's some times up there.
06:31Cooper Webb second right now.
06:32Cooper Webb, your winner here one year ago.
06:3520 points down in the championship.
06:37This is a big race for the number one.
06:39It is.
06:40I mean, it's like I said at the top of the show.
06:42It's DEFCON 5 for Cooper Webb.
06:44He's 20 points down.
06:45And if he is somehow able to pull off this championship from the place he's in right now,
06:51it would be the greatest thing that he's done in his career.
06:56And that's saying something.
06:57Three times Supercross champ.
06:59Watching Eli Tomac there through the whoops.
07:01So good at controlling the power with the clutch through the whoops.
07:05He puts so much weight on the back, keeps the back weighted down so it doesn't go side to side.
07:10It's not the fastest thing that you'll ever see.
07:13But Tomac's technique in the whoops allows him to skim cleanly lap after lap on technical racetracks like this.
07:19Tomac goes to second.
07:2145.8.
07:22Just a few tenths off of the lead as Cooper Webb is on a fast lap right now.
07:26He's a 46.2.
07:28Cuts down.
07:29We talk about that a lot with Cooper Webb.
07:31He's starting to jump those whoops right there.
07:323-3-3 sets himself up for this turn right here.
07:36And watch this.
07:36He's going to pop out and get back to the right.
07:39Oh, Vince Freese in his way right there.
07:41But guys are getting back to the right because there's really no ruts over there yet.
07:44And really, if you stay in the main line, the way the jump forms with how soft it is,
07:50the main line will end up shooting you higher in the air than if you were to cut back to
07:54the right.
07:55So you'll see guys experimenting with that all day.
07:58But the angles of these faces change so much with the ruts.
08:02You always have to be looking out for a better line.
08:05Look how good the number 32 of Justin Cooper looks right now.
08:10Watch him jump through here.
08:11Backsides all of them.
08:13Perfect.
08:14That is so...
08:15Some would argue, and I bet you would agree with me here,
08:17that jumping them like that when they're still this fresh is probably more difficult than skimming.
08:22Absolutely.
08:23Absolutely.
08:25Let's see what this time is.
08:26Can he better his 45.5?
08:3045.9 there.
08:32Good backup time from the 32.
08:34And really, he's making his money right now in the corner.
08:36So much roll speeds.
08:38Never too hard on the gas or too hard on the brakes.
08:40It just allows him to connect the track and flow through it.
08:46Number 62, Grant Harlan on your screen.
08:48There's Ken Rocks.
08:49Remember, the top 18 go directly into the races.
08:53The rest of them go to the last chance qualifier, which we'll have here in just a few hours on
08:58Race Day Live.
09:00Setting the stage for tonight.
09:01Ken Rocks is fourth right now.
09:0245.8 as the ET3 goes to the top of the 45.4.
09:09And that's pretty difficult to do.
09:12Right now, late in this session, only two minutes to go.
09:15Eli must have found something, but let's see if the 96 can put it on top.
09:19Here he goes, able to get that inside right there.
09:22And this is where he's doing something a little bit different.
09:23He's going triple, going to the outside.
09:25He's going to three out of this turn as well.
09:27And let's see if he wheelies this first one.
09:29He doesn't.
09:30He just goes double.
09:31He's been wheelieing that first one and then getting his triple.
09:34That was a good line as well.
09:35It was.
09:35And I love how patient Hunter is in his corners.
09:39It's so difficult to remember.
09:40A lot of times here in Indianapolis, from the beginning of the rut in the corner,
09:45it will go from the beginning of the corner all the way off the face of the first jump.
09:49So if you get on the gas a little too hard early in the rut, it's very difficult to remain
09:54balanced.
09:55But you see the 96, his head is always perfectly center over the bars, which helps him a lot in
10:00these conditions.
10:01Let's see what this time is.
10:02Can he better his 46.1?
10:05He does not.
10:06He goes 46.4.
10:08So just a few tenths off of his fast lap.
10:10Still the fastest on track.
10:12Eli Tomac, 45.4.
10:14We talked about it off the top.
10:16Eight races into this championship.
10:18He's got half of the wins.
10:20He won his eighth career Daytona Supercross a week ago.
10:25And like we say, I see the three, he just continues to impress week after week.
10:29He's 33 years old.
10:31One point behind this man on your screen in the championship.
10:35It's good to see Jorge Prado back.
10:37Good to see him back.
10:38He's qualified fastest twice this year.
10:40Look, I don't think anyone really expected that.
10:43But it's been a lot of fun to watch the 26 and how great he is at Supercross.
10:46It really is.
10:48And the transformation from 2025 to 2026, obviously very comfortable in agreeing with the setup on the Red Bull KTM.
10:57And I don't know what they found over there this year, but these guys look so comfortable.
11:01There's been no complaints about the motorcycle.
11:04They don't look like they've been being held back at all.
11:07And you see Jorge just put up a good time already, P3, and just kind of experimenting with some different
11:12lines.
11:13Absolutely.
11:15Third fastest, out with a shoulder injury for a couple weeks.
11:18And I have to really give him and the team a lot of kudos for – there's that line I
11:22was talking about the Hunter was doing that Cooper Webb does.
11:24But back to Prado just quickly.
11:26Shout-out to Jorge as he almost gets in the side of Justin Hill.
11:30Look, we have a weekend off next weekend.
11:33Kudos to him coming back this weekend on a very difficult track, difficult format with a triple crown.
11:38So I applaud him for coming back.
11:40He could have easily waited as we see Hunter get a little out of shape there in the whoops.
11:45He just hit an edge, got a little off balance, got his body weight to the left.
11:49And he knew a lot of these guys in this class, not named Ken Rockson, keep their finger on the
11:55clutch going through the whoops.
11:57So it kind of acts as a safety measure.
11:59When it starts to get a little out of control, you just gently pull the brakes in, pull the clutch
12:04in at the same time.
12:05And most of the time, you can keep it on two wheels.
12:07But good save from the 96.
12:10ET3 looks like he's going to qualify fastest.
12:13This would be his 98th A-group session win.
12:16And can you believe that, I mean, the numbers that Eli Tomac is putting up.
12:21Justin Cooper with a fast one as well.
12:22Jorge Prado, once again, kudos to him and the team for getting back out here in Indianapolis
12:28and getting some more experience underneath his belt.
12:30Ken Rockson fourth.
12:32And how about that top five leaderboard?
12:33And there's Hunter Lawrence in sixth.
12:35Malcolm Stewart seventh.
12:36I cannot wait to drop the gate.
12:39Live on Peacock, 7 o'clock Eastern time tonight.
12:41But we're just getting rolling.
12:43Eli Tomac, fastest, Group A.
