00:00Hello, welcome to the CV's Flight Channel.
00:30You said it, you said it yesterday when you saw the bigger whoops, this is, it's amazing
00:35that it's a strength for Prado at this point.
00:38This is where we are, yes.
00:39The rider with the least experience through whoops is automatically one of the best, and
00:44it didn't take long to get there.
00:46I think the one challenge for him that I've heard is, I want to see it as the race goes
00:51on, as those whoops break down.
00:53That is probably where the experience is going to pay off even more, and that's what he's
00:56always told me.
00:57It's not really the obstacles, it's learning how the track breaks down and adapting to
01:00that, and there's really only one way to get it.
01:02You've got to race.
01:03I think the biggest thing for you folks at home watching right now is you can really tell
01:09by someone who's comfortable in the whoops if they're trying to create as much speed as
01:13they can from the middle of the turn to the first whoop.
01:16If they're trying to look for as much speed as they can possibly get, like this man, Will
01:19Ken Rockson or Jorge Prado was just doing, or Cole Davies in the 250 class, let's watch
01:23this whoop speed from the 94.
01:25Let's see this turn speed right there, and if he can create some speed from there to
01:29there, he's trying to get as much as he can get.
01:31Look at that whoop speed.
01:32And sometimes we talk about being neutral on the bike, and that is the best way to hit
01:37the whoops, but you saw Ken just ever slow slightly, getting a little bit further back
01:42on the bike because the whoops, they're starting to break down, it's starting to get a little
01:45slick, they have a hard base to them.
01:47So just a little, little technical change there going through their back, and you saw
01:52that just driving forward with the momentum.
01:55Electing to go on the inside option lane right there, goes over the tabletop, triple, triple,
02:00then he goes double, single, on, off, comes up a little bit short.
02:03That's worth just a couple tenths right there when you short that, just that little bit.
02:08Kenny was your fastest qualifier earlier today with a 51.803 to Chase Sexton's 51.897, so
02:16it was really tight at the top as he does a 52.1 to start this session off.
02:23Malcolm Stewart, second, 52.7, Jorge Prado.
02:28This man, Hunter Lawrence, eighth overall.
02:31Not typically what Hunter does, but AC, you talked about it a lot with Hunter Lawrence.
02:37He loves when the track breaks down a little bit.
02:39He doesn't do his best work even at the beginning of the main event sometimes.
02:42When it's so smooth, he really comes alive in the second half of the race.
02:46You mentioned his bike setup and such, but just when the track breaks down, you know Hunter
02:51Lawrence is going to be one of the best.
02:53Oh, there's no doubt.
02:53And he, at this year, he's shown he can adapt and be fast in any condition.
02:58You know he's going to figure it out in the night show as he starts the lap right here.
03:03Let's check his line out compared to Kenny here in the whoops.
03:05A lot of these guys cutting down a little bit, but just goes right through the middle, carries
03:10good speed through the turn.
03:12It's a good pass.
03:15Double, triple, looked like there was a rider down.
03:17He comes up short right there.
03:18This one's not going to be his best of the session.
03:23Kenny's still on top in this session with a 52.1.
03:26Guys throwing down times.
03:27I love this part of the day weave where these guys, the intensity just starts to ratchet
03:31up.
03:31You know these guys are going to carry some confidence from this session into the night
03:36show.
03:36Yeah, and then you couple it with this track condition.
03:38I feel like some years in Detroit, and maybe it'll get there later, it gets pretty hard and
03:43slick.
03:43But right now, it is full send mode as you watch Christian Craig on the quad lock Honda.
03:49And it's just a pleasure to watch Christian Craig ride a dirt bike.
03:53He's got such a good style.
03:55So fluid.
03:56Talk about technique all the time.
03:58Some of the best technique in the game.
04:00And really, the game for Christian, to me, is just confidence.
04:04When he's confident, he can be a 5-10 guy in this class every day of the week.
04:09He's had a couple top 10s so far this season.
04:12Take a look at the 4 at Chase Sexton.
04:14I mean, to me, everything I've seen with Chase tells me he's here to play for the win tonight.
04:21Really?
04:21Yeah.
04:22Right out.
04:22I mean, that's what I'm seeing.
04:23Right out the box.
04:24Yeah.
04:24Because just in those few races before he had the injury, before he missed some time,
04:29he just didn't look like himself.
04:30He didn't have this level of aggression.
04:32There was a big pause in the middle of his turns, and he just looks like the old Chase Sexton
04:36to me.
04:37I could be wrong.
04:38Big changes to the engine there.
04:40Now, Chase said yesterday on press day, he kept saying it is a stock engine package.
04:44I talked to Dan Fahey, the team manager.
04:45He's like, I wouldn't use that term.
04:46It is definitely different than what they were racing on earlier.
04:50What you can actually see as we go back to Hunter Lawrence, Sexton had this gigantically long header pipe on
04:55the engine at the beginning of the year.
04:57A lot of low-end power.
04:58It was so violent.
04:59Brock Tickle said, man, I wouldn't choose that, but that's what Chase wanted.
05:02Now, Sexton is back to the shorter exhaust that Garrett Marchbanks uses.
05:06A little less power off the bottom.
05:08Maybe that will solve some of the problems.
05:10Hunter Lawrence, he just solved some problems.
05:11Yes, he did.
05:12He absolutely did as he goes to the top, 52.0.
05:16Eli Tomek fourth right now, and you saw what Eli just did.
05:20He made a little mistake in that corner because he came into the turn.
05:24Sometimes when you have so much traction on a racetrack, that's the trap you can fall into is rushing your
05:30entry into the turn a little bit.
05:32He just got in there a little too quick, had to check up,
05:35and it killed his momentum in the beginning of the whoops, but he's Eli Tomek.
05:39He's going to figure it out.
05:40This line starting to come into play right here.
05:42A lot of guys in the first qualifying session going around that single before the tabletop.
05:47This puts you three into the turn.
05:49On, you go on, off from the outside right there.
05:52I love how these guys are playing with different lines, different options.
05:56The track crew has done an amazing job.
05:57As Ken Rockson goes to the top, 51.565.
06:02That's his fastest lap of the day.
06:03Here goes Eli Tomek.
06:05Going to tee it back up again.
06:07Let's see.
06:08I bet he'll come into this turn just a tiny bit slower.
06:11Carries some good speed.
06:13You like that?
06:13On the feet, on the foot pegs, all the way through.
06:16I love that.
06:18Let's see what he does in the option lane after this right-hand turn.
06:22He goes double, triple, double.
06:24Let's see what he does right here.
06:25Chase Sexton going double on-off.
06:27Tomek and Lex still looks like somebody must have been in his way right there,
06:30but I love that option lane.
06:32Some guys going square off, wheelie over that triple onto the tabletop,
06:35but guys like Sexton are going outside double on-off.
06:38I think in the beginning of the first practice, that inside option worked a little better,
06:43but right now you see because guys are wheeling over that little single,
06:46getting on the gas very hard at the bottom of the face.
06:49It's kind of creating a steep transition,
06:52so you can't carry a lot of speed over the roller to do the three onto the tabletop,
06:57so I would imagine Eli is going to go double on-off next time around.
07:01Guys, we are seeing some new guys at the top, in the top five.
07:06Jordan Smith has entered the chat.
07:08Justin Hill has arrived here today.
07:10We just, and Tomek's down at eighth.
07:12Prado's Cooper Webb is 10th right now.
07:14Woo, and I think you might see more from Chase Sexton to see him in the bottom box.
07:18He's second quickest right now, but he's logging another flyer right now.
07:22So cool to see guys like Jordan Smith,
07:25highly capable of throwing down some fast laps.
07:28First year in that 450 Premier Classes, Chase Sexton is on a heater right now.
07:36Inside right here, on, off.
07:37Does he get it clean?
07:38He does.
07:39Perfect.
07:39Chase Sexton is so strong.
07:40He's able to really use his legs and get off of that tabletop.
07:45And I like that he got back to the right-hand side of off the table.
07:49The single is a little bit lower on the right-hand side.
07:52Can he better?
07:53Is 51.8.
07:54That last lap around was a 51.9.
07:56Still not as good as Ken Rocks with a 51.5.
08:02Eli, you see him, you get on the gas so hard in that turn.
08:05You saw the back-end get low.
08:06The front-end got a little bit high.
08:08Just a small mistake for Tomac.
08:11And on this style of racetrack,
08:13I did not have Tomac being in ninth on my bingo card in this session.
08:18Hunter Lawrence looks like he wants more.
08:20He's got a 52.0, sitting sixth right now.
08:23Like I mentioned, Justin Hill, the top five of the 51.9.
08:27Justin Hill can do that any time he wants.
08:30If he wants to turn it on, he can be a top-five guy.
08:33Yeah, you're waiting for it.
08:34You know you're going to get a couple in a given year.
08:36It's going pretty deep now into the second half.
08:38But there is no doubt the talent, the speed.
08:40So Justin Hill fifth, that's not really a surprise,
08:42even if he hasn't done it all year.
08:45Let's see if Hunter can get on to this.
08:47And does he get off clean?
08:48Pretty clean.
08:49Comes a little bit short, but that's solid enough.
08:51Clean enough.
08:53Gets the triple, gets back to the left-hand side of the track.
08:56Carries speed all the way around the top of the turn there.
08:58He's going to race this last section.
09:02Does he beat his...
09:03Oh!
09:03Wow!
09:04He does!
09:0551.547 and tops the 94.
09:09Ken Rockson.
09:11Wow, that was a fast lap from the 96 of Hunter Lawrence.
09:17I love Hunter's angles on the track.
09:20The way that he connects the track.
09:21He really doesn't leave a lot of speed on the racetrack with his line selection.
09:28And I always go back to the throttle control.
09:31On a track like this, it kind of baits you into wanting to get on the gas so hard in
09:36the
09:36middle of the turn because there is traction.
09:39Hunter Lawrence very disciplined with rolling on the gas in the middle of the turn.
09:43And I love that because it doesn't upset the balance of the bike.
09:46You don't see his back end getting super low, his front end getting tall.
09:49He's so light on the gas and the brakes.
09:52I'm curious on this lap time.
09:54Chase Sexton on a fast one right here.
09:57Oh, he overjumps that a little bit.
09:59Red cross flags are out, so he has to roll.
10:01What's that lap from Chase?
10:03Last lap of rounds of 52.3.
10:06So doesn't better his 51.8.
10:12Not sure what happened there off the finish line, but the red cross flag was out.
10:16So it looked like somebody was down.
10:17Malcolm Stewart messing around with the whoops.
10:19He's top three right now.
10:20Third in this session right now.
10:22Justin Hill fourth in this session.
10:24We do have a Cooper Webb sighting.
10:26Top five in this session so far for Cooper Webb.
10:2952.0 is his best.
10:32I'm going to go back to it.
10:33I think we got deep field back again.
10:34Oh, yeah.
10:35I think so.
10:36Enough riders have returned.
10:37Other riders have stepped up that have been here.
10:39And just like that, Eli Tomac, ninth quickest.
10:45And there are a lot of guys.
10:47Justin Hill, Jordan Smith.
10:48There are a lot of these guys, Malcolm Stewart, that can go out there
10:53and be the fastest guy for a lap.
10:56And I love that parody.
10:57Of course, it's different getting into the main event, being up front,
11:01executing all the little things you have to do to actually win a race.
11:05But we have a lot of guys that aren't talked about a lot that can go as fast as anybody.
11:10Speed is only one part of the equation.
11:12Let's see the speed from the 27.
11:15Malcolm Stewart.
11:16You know he's going to be fast through the whoops.
11:18Third overall right now, the 51.8.
11:21Just needs a few tenths of a second.
11:23And he would qualify.
11:24Oh, mistake right there.
11:27Stood himself up in that rut.
11:29Sent him off almost into the tough blocks.
11:32And what makes this track technical is how much intensity and aggression you have to have
11:38to be competitive.
11:39It's not necessarily the obstacles themselves.
11:42It's just how fast and intense you have to ride these obstacles.
11:47Justin Cooper on your screen right here.
11:49He's fifth right now.
11:50He's in the 51-second range.
11:52He's 51.9.
11:55It's going to be a good track for Jacob.
11:57A lot of turn speed.
11:58He's got great angles as well, like we were talking about with Hunter Lawrence.
12:03Looks like Hunter Lawrence.
12:05There's a few guys out on track still, but looks like that man right there, the 96.
12:10Honda HRC Progressive Rise going to qualify fastest here today.
12:14Chase Sexton still on one right here.
12:16No, no.
12:17He's not on a real fast one that's going to top Hunter.
12:22So that man right there, wow.
12:24Weeds, what a way to start the day for Hunter Lawrence.
12:27Yeah, firing on all cylinders, and this is another type of thing.
12:30You two have mentioned how much better he has gotten at the beginning of the races.
12:33I don't think anyone was thinking Hunter Lawrence has a one-lap qualifying speed demon either.
12:39He's fixed that part too.
12:41Hunter Lawrence, his third career fast qualifier.
12:44Second this season.
12:45He was fastest at Daytona earlier this year.
12:48He has got a ton of speed here in Detroit.
12:50Ken Rockson as well.
12:51Malcolm Stone.
