00:00Hello, welcome to the CV's Flight Channel.
00:30He's got to be better about planning his passes, being decisive, and getting it done.
00:34It's just too close at the top to leave that area with some to be desired there.
00:40And for Caden Dudney, he was so good to start the year in SMX Next.
00:45Everybody agreed he was ready to go to the next level,
00:47but so far hasn't really had a breakout moment in his first professional season,
00:53whether it's been crashes, bad starts, mistakes.
00:56He just needs a little something to build on, a top five, a good practice, win a heat race.
01:03He needs something to start building and getting it in the right direction.
01:06We know how much talent this kid has.
01:09And finally, for Cole Davies, at 18 years old,
01:13he came in to the professional ranks last year with not a lot of pressure.
01:17It was his rookie season, but we know how that went.
01:20He won a couple races. He looked so good doing it.
01:22He's so talented on the bike and truly has the chance to be a superstar in Supercross.
01:28But this is a new position for him, and it can be tough as a young racer trying to manage
01:33the championship point lead.
01:35We saw how frustrated he was not getting the wins at the first couple races.
01:39So for him, I'm looking for him to mature and manage these expectations to avoid the big mistake down the
01:46stretch.
01:47This guy has so much talent.
01:49It's been a great season so far, but it's a new position for Cole Davies.
01:52Cole Davies, six points over Seth Hamaker and nine points over Joe Shimoda.
01:58And, folks, I'm sure you guys at home are thinking, look at this soil as we get this 250 Group
02:03A qualifier,
02:04number one underway, refueled by Kroger.
02:06But, Adam, we cannot stop talking about this soil here in Detroit.
02:10Just several years ago, it was really hard packed as Davies makes a little mistake right there.
02:14But there's traction for days here today.
02:16I remember my first trip to Ford Field here in Detroit, and it was so – it reminded me of
02:22old-school Supercross in the early 2000s.
02:25It was very dry, very slick, and I'm not sure where they found this dirt, JB,
02:30but I know this is actually a day where you and I want to be down there riding.
02:35This track looks so good.
02:37We have a nice, pretty big set of whoops as well.
02:40So, I like this layout, and as a rider, you cannot ask for anything better than this dirt right now.
02:45It's like Velcro in the turns.
02:47Absolutely.
02:47There's going to be a lot of aggression, especially in these first qualifiers.
02:51There you see the number 10, Monster Energy Pro Circuit, Kawasaki, Seth Hamaker.
02:55He's on a four-session win streak right now.
02:58Six of eight sessions this year.
03:00He's been fastest.
03:01Speed has not been an issue for the 10.
03:03And it says a lot in going to Haley and Weege's report a little bit.
03:08Cole Davies, everyone knows, everyone in this class knows they cannot hold a candle to Cole Davies in the whoops.
03:14He is that good in that section of the track.
03:17But I've been surprised that both Joe Shimoda and Seth Hamaker have been making up a little time on Davies
03:23on the rest of the track.
03:24And I point to Seth Hamaker's turns, specifically the middle of his corner.
03:29He's so consistent, so balanced on the bike, carries so much speed through the turns.
03:34To me, that's where he's making up the time on Davies.
03:38Absolutely.
03:39Here's that big whoop section right here.
03:40Tons of speed between that berm and the first whoop.
03:45You're able to create a lot of speed with a big gap right there.
03:48Just talk about how important that is with a big set of whoops.
03:50It's extremely important, especially on a 250.
03:54The corner before the whoops is going to either set you up for failure or success.
03:59And the whoops right now aren't too technical.
04:01But we walked down there yesterday, JB, and we both thought they're a little bit more spaced out than they
04:06normally are.
04:07They're a little bit bigger than they normally are.
04:09So if it does break down and start to get edgy, I believe the whoops are going to be a
04:14section of the track, of course, as always, where we're going to see a lot of mistakes, a lot of
04:18passes.
04:19But right now, early in this session, they're not super technical yet.
04:24Big triple, 90-degree turn into the finish line right here.
04:28And then they have a double.
04:29You're going to shift up.
04:30What are you on a 250?
04:31Are you fourth gear in the whoops or are you clicking fifth?
04:32I would be clicking into third gear on that double going into the left.
04:37I'd probably keep my feet on the foot pegs because there's so much traction in the turn, and I would
04:41shift fourth coming out of the turn.
04:44I believe a lot of these guys are going to be in fourth gear.
04:46You see Cole Davies cutting down in that 180-degree turn and going triple onto the tabletop.
04:51Here's a little option section right here as he stands all the way around that, gets stood up a little
04:56bit, triple, triple.
04:58Then this next section right here, section, this is difficult.
05:00Guys are going onto that tabletop, and they're trying to get off and clipping that.
05:04You've got to really use your legs.
05:05We watched the guy Chase Sexton yesterday, one of them that was able to get off of that tabletop during
05:10our press ride.
05:12Triple right here.
05:13Davies fastest so far with a 53.5.
05:16Let's see what this lap time is for the number 37.
05:20That time around was a 53.5 as well, so pretty consistent.
05:25And there's that section right there, him in the whoops.
05:27We were talking with him yesterday, and he was telling us a story of him getting ready when he was
05:34in America for the first time, coming over here, getting ready for SMX next.
05:37He said his riding coach at the time, Ben Townley, he was not committing to the whoops at the practice
05:43track.
05:44And Ben Townley, he said he was about to pack up, head back to New Zealand.
05:47And so, Cole Davies, I'd asked him, has he always been this good in the whoops?
05:52And he shook his head, said absolutely not.
05:55But he has turned into maybe the best whoop rider not named James Stewart I've ever seen.
06:02Absolutely.
06:03He's absolutely incredible in the whoops.
06:04And it all comes down to that entry speed into the whoops.
06:08The more speed you carry in, the faster you're going to go through him right on top.
06:12We see the number 65 right here.
06:16Marshall Welton making it happen.
06:18Local boy, Michigan guy right here.
06:20So it's always fun to come back home and do some racing.
06:23No doubt about it.
06:24Looking at Seth Hamaker right here, just sliding out a little bit up the inside, but goes to the top.
06:29First man in the 52s.
06:33Hamaker has had so much speed this year so far.
06:38And interesting what Jason Wygant said off the top of talking to Seth.
06:41He's like, look, I don't need to be as fast as Cole, nor will I probably ever be as fast
06:45as him through the whoops.
06:47But I need to be a little bit better.
06:48And if he's even a little bit better in the whoops, seems like he has him covered everywhere else.
06:53There's no doubt.
06:54But I do think that Cole Davies, with what we've seen, just the eye test, how much talent he has
06:59on the bike, he can rely on the whoops.
07:02He knows he's going to be faster there.
07:03But if he's able to get a little bit more consistent in his turns, just a little bit more consistent
07:09in his corners, he's going to be very tough to beat.
07:13When you have a section of the racetrack like that, you know you're going to put some time into your
07:17competition.
07:18Kind of frees you up a little bit, allows you to relax on the rest of the track.
07:22But I have no doubt Cole's been going to work, specifically working on the middle of those turns.
07:27And if he's able to tighten up that area, it's going to be very tough for Joe Shimoda and Seth
07:32Hamaker to do battle with him.
07:35But, you know, these guys are the best in the world.
07:36They're going to figure it out.
07:38Just showing the number 22 of Cody Shock.
07:40That Club MX Yamaha went into the top five.
07:42He's a 54.8.
07:44Joe Shimoda on your screen.
07:46He's 11th right now, 55.3.
07:48But we touched on it a lot last week in Birmingham as Cole Davies is down in that left-hand
07:52turn.
07:53Shimoda, typically not your qualifying guy.
07:54He comes alive when the main event starts at night.
07:56And I trained with him a lot the latter portion of my career.
08:00And he was never very good on a track like this that's not super technical yet.
08:05The conditions are nice and smooth.
08:08There's not too many ruts.
08:10He really does his best work when the track breaks down, gets very difficult and very rough.
08:15I never understood it, but he loves it.
08:18He loves when he has the most fun when the track is beat down and rough, like the end of
08:22a main event.
08:23So this is not really his wheelhouse.
08:26But so far, top three in qualifying for Joe.
08:28Can't be mad at that.
08:30Absolutely.
08:3053.7.
08:32But still, look at Seth Hamaker on top.
08:34I mentioned it just a little bit ago, but he's got a four-session win streak.
08:37He's been fastest six out of eight sessions this season.
08:41Have we seen this much speed from Seth in the past?
08:43I mean, in 2026, he's been incredibly fast.
08:45I think once he got that win at the East-West Showdown in Indianapolis last year,
08:50we saw him unlock a level of speed that we haven't seen before.
08:55As you see, Cole Davies there using that inside option where they laid that single down,
08:59going three onto the tabletop.
09:01But it just seems like Seth has all the intangibles.
09:05It's difficult to watch him ride and figure out what exactly he's doing better than his competition.
09:10But it's all the little things.
09:12And like I said, I think the middle of his corner, I think he's the best in the class in
09:17that area.
09:18And how does a guy, let's just say Seth Hamaker is the fastest through the middle of his turn.
09:22If you were racing him, how would you work on that during the week?
09:25Is it just a roll speed thing?
09:27Is it entering the turn?
09:28How would you actually implement that on a Saturday night?
09:30And when you want to make big changes like that, I would always like in training to break down the
09:36track in sections.
09:37So you could put a little bit more emphasis on what exactly you need to work on.
09:42And if it's a technique issue, a lot of the time you have so much muscle memory of the way
09:47that you ride the bike.
09:48It's hard to change.
09:49So for me, when I wanted to make a big change, I would slow things down, work sections at 70%,
09:5580% and be very focused on, you know, my outside elbow in the corner, where I'm getting off the
10:02break, how hard I'm getting on the gas, things like that.
10:05When you want to make big changes, you got to slow it down a little bit and repeat it over
10:11and over and over again.
10:12But 91 of Isaiah Clark, just on your screen, Cole Davies to the top, 52.1, three-tenths of a
10:18second better than Seth Hamaker.
10:20And how about Caden Dudney?
10:21You said he needed to show us something.
10:23That's a little something right there.
10:24That is absolutely something.
10:26And this class has thinned out a little bit.
10:28We lost some riders.
10:30Jalik Swole at our last East-West Showdown in Birmingham.
10:33So for Caden Dudney, he just needs to get a good start, be up there somewhere in the top five.
10:40I just don't think we've seen his talent level in this season so far just because of mistakes.
10:48But it doesn't mean it's not there.
10:49But as a young rider, you're getting your first shot in the pro ranks.
10:53Every weekend you don't perform to your expectations, to the team's expectations.
10:57It's more pressure and more pressure.
10:59You put so much pressure on yourself more than anything.
11:02So that's why I say if he can just get a decent result, I think it'll kind of free him
11:07up a little bit
11:08and allow him to show us what he's capable of.
11:10Well, he's got some speed here today.
11:12And you and I were talking to him yesterday as he throws a huge whip off the finish line.
11:16Caden with some style.
11:18But he was talking about how different the track conditions were compared to the SMX Next races
11:23and just how much he had to change his bike as he goes.
11:26Oh, no.
11:26Over the bars in the whoops.
11:30That's always tough.
11:30He just finished up a lap.
11:32A nice whip.
11:33You're having fun.
11:33You're feeling it.
11:34And just like that.
11:37Wow.
11:38Down he goes.
11:39Looks like he's okay.
11:40Walk us through this AC.
11:41Just got him on a roll lap.
11:42He's on a roll lap and decides.
11:44He's obviously feeling confident in the whoops.
11:46Decides to go for it.
11:47But you see he's back in, stepped out a little bit.
11:50Got a little bit off balance.
11:51Then the front wheel gets low.
11:54And that's all she wrote.
11:55We did see these whoops yesterday.
11:57They're a little bit further apart than what we've seen as of late.
12:01So it just caught him off guard a little bit.
12:03And if you're not completely focused, even on roll laps, Supercross, it's so technical.
12:09Demands all your attention, all your focus.
12:11If your mind wanders a little bit, it's easy for something like that to happen.
12:15Remember, we were talking about that commitment from the exit of that turn to the first whoop
12:19and what Cole Davies has worked on so much.
12:21Even on the roll lap, if you take the focus away just that little bit,
12:24those whoops are that difficult as Cole Davies.
12:27His first session being fastest here on the East this season, 52.1.
12:32Seth Hamrick are bringing some speed once again.
