00:01Where are we going?
00:03And who are we killing?
00:09I'm Dari Sadegian, studio director at Rocksteady Studios.
00:16My name is Axel Whidbey and I'm the game director here.
00:20Eyes up people! Let's go!
00:22At Rocksteady, storytelling and character depth are the core DNA of our game.
00:26These are not features but Rocksteady fundamentals.
00:29With Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League, we wanted to tell a new story.
00:32We wanted to expand the Arkham version.
00:36Coming from Batman, whether it was just from his perspective, just from his lens,
00:41now getting to see the world through the villain's eyes was really the hook for us.
00:46Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League is a third-person action shooter
00:49that can be played solo or with your friends.
00:52It's a story-driven game that highlights Rocksteady's experience in bringing characters to life.
00:56As the Suicide Squad, you'll be forced to take on an absolute impossible mission.
01:01You must kill the Justice League.
01:06We want the mechanics of the game to really reflect the personalities of the squad.
01:10I'm always first on the trigger.
01:11We want their moves to be flamboyant, exaggerated, chaotic.
01:16Let's make life cheap chewing gum and not stick around!
01:20Now, our four members of Task Force X find themselves inside Metropolis.
01:24At twice the size of Gotham City in Arkham Knight.
01:28It's big, it's loud, it's a battlefield.
01:30It's a place built for verticality, mobility, a unique fusion of enhanced traversal, gunplay, and melee weapons,
01:38creating a supervillain empowerment that we think is a totally original gameplay experience.
01:44There was just an opportunity there to expand into co-op and have this dynamic world
01:48where friends can come together to share an experience.
01:51Or players can go solo, switching character members between missions while savoring each and every story twist.
01:56Do you feel it? The swell of pride for what we have accomplished together?
02:00We want to welcome you all to the first episode of our new series, Suicide Squad Insider,
02:04where we will provide a deeper look into Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League.
02:09Over the next few months, we'll be unpacking the game, answering your questions and sharing a few surprises
02:14as we move closer to our launch on February 2nd.
02:17We'll also cover how Rocksteady will continue to support the game and its players post-launch with a huge amount
02:21of free content.
02:22On this episode, you're going to hear from different members of the Rocksteady team
02:26as we explore more of the game's story, the world of Metropolis, and the core gameplay experience.
02:31The Suicide Squad. A fitting moniker.
02:34Let's jump into it.
02:43Normally, when you make a game in a superhero universe, the protagonist is the best person for the job.
02:50The squad are definitely not the best people for this job. They're the only people available.
02:54Hey, Suicide Squad!
02:57Fuck you!
02:59So, it gives the narrative and the gameplay a kind of frantic, slightly panicked feeling,
03:06where they aren't trying to figure this out as they go.
03:11The Arkham games weren't gritty because Rocksteady makes gritty, dark games.
03:16They were that way because that's what suits a Batman story.
03:21Every game we approach, we approach that with a similar mindset of just like, how do we enhance that experience?
03:26How do we excite players in new ways?
03:28Yeah, new criminal records!
03:31For the studio to try something new and stretch our legs with a shooter first and with the high powerful
03:35traversal elements
03:36was coming out of our comfort zone somewhat, but we wanted to see what we could do to put an
03:40Arkham spin on the action shooter space.
03:42Now get your damn gun out!
03:44In true Rocksteady style, the cinematics are kind of the heart of our story.
03:47It's the most cinematics that we've ever done, and every one of them is crafted to perfection.
03:51We're not just trying to do what we did before, we're making something which fits the source material that we
03:56think will make for an interesting story,
03:57but will feel different.
04:02To introduce you to our story, let's jump into an early part of the game.
04:07Amanda Waller, the director of the government agency Argus, sends the team behind enemy lines into Metropolis.
04:14Harley Quinn, should you not be more cautious?
04:18She ain't wired that way.
04:19Oh, dead shot.
04:21Hidden in an underground train station, the team finds a secret elevator.
04:28Until we figure out where the hell we are, let's play along with...
04:33Lawler.
04:34Oh, is this a superhero museum?
04:39Hate superheroes!
04:41And museums!
04:43I've seen it on TV.
04:45It's the Hall of Justice.
04:47So let's rob the place!
04:50Get down!
04:51Fuck!
04:52Idiot!
04:58Through these doors lies the inner sanctum of the Justice League.
05:02Sounds very grand, doesn't it?
05:04And it is.
05:06She is a dame who can almost make me listen to a boring PSA.
05:10Don't touch anything that's gonna set off an alarm.
05:13I ain't fighting any supers for you.
05:15I have read much about the Justice League.
05:17And still, they are larger than I expected.
05:21Those holograms aren't actual size, Shark Man.
05:25It's so true to the characters that they're in Hall of Justice and the first thing they think is, what
05:29can we steal?
05:36Hey, man, what's the-
05:37Ah!
05:38Shit!
05:39Glass.
05:40I'm okay.
05:41What the hell you got there?
05:42Thought this baby was a myth.
05:45Speed Force Gauntlet.
05:47Back when Doc Savannah tried to lift Flash's gimmick.
05:51Multiple responding walks-
05:52Ha-ha!
05:59Myth you read.
06:07Godday!
06:08Um!
06:09Still I-
06:10Mip!
06:10heritage open walks thing-
06:16Somali-
06:17Baby!
06:29You found the Riddler's Hat of Invisibility!
06:41Where'd the shark go?
06:44Children.
06:45Ooh, nothin' says International Assassin like a frickin' jetpack.
06:51Shit. I'd break my damn neck.
06:54You're probably right. Jetpacks seem more like a Deathstroke thing anyway.
07:07Mine.
07:14Shit.
07:31That, uh, hat's not gonna get you vertical, Jacques.
07:36I can make my own way up.
07:51Well, tickle me stupid. Sharks can fly!
07:55All right. New toys, load of guns. Let's get up on that roof and get our freedom back.
08:12So here we're taking these iconic characters who don't typically traverse the way they do in our game, but that's
08:17the beauty of our storytelling. We've managed to take these unique abilities and make that an extension of their personalities.
08:23Our power is undeniable!
08:29We loved working with Gotham and making that a world for players to experience. And we wanted to do that
08:34with a new location.
08:51We felt that Metropolis was the natural next step to extend that. And what better way to introduce it than
08:58through an invasion from Brainiac with no Justice League to save them.
09:06Just checking. We're all seeing that thing, right?
09:10The entire game is about fighting behind enemy lines.
09:13Oi, Wally! What the hell have you sent us into? It's a bloody war zone out here! There's a giant
09:19skull in the sky!
09:20Congratulations, Task Force X. You're the first assets to make it into Metropolis alive. We're sending a signal transponder to
09:28your location.
09:29So you're essentially bringing X back your arm.
09:32Your orders are to activate that transponder.
09:46What the hell are those things?
09:48I mean, there's no civilians left. Brainiacs killed them or made them into soldiers to do his bidding.
09:53And through this corruption, the people of Metropolis have become extensions of Brainiac.
10:10What the player knows from our title, and what the Suicide Squad is about to find out, is that here,
10:14the Justice League are the bad guys.
10:16They've been corrupted by Brainiac, and over the course of the game, your mission will be to kill them.
10:20Green Lantern! Nice! Hey, your face always looks so... what?
10:27Harley doesn't have any innate superpowers, so to go up against these beings that have incredible strength, it's a challenge.
10:35I'm in the middle of a recon for Brainiac. Let's walk and talk.
10:39You're talking about, you know, the all-star team of superheroes here.
10:42I want you to see this. Pay attention, Floyd.
10:45Let me go home! Please!
10:49Get it off! Get it off!
10:51Looks bad, feels worse.
10:54But once you've been enhanced, there's no going back.
10:59Outstanding!
10:59When you face off against the most iconic characters in all of superhero-dom of Justice League,
11:04it's, by many people's definition, an impossible task.
11:07You're searching for stragglers, augmenting Brainiac's army.
11:13The shard gets it!
11:14The stakes that Rocksteady sets, the challenges they heap upon you as a player.
11:19Time to rally up with Brainiac. Ready to make the leap?
11:22You know immediately, like, this is the tallest task I will ever take on in a video game.
11:30Flash! Brainiac wondered how you got off the ship.
11:33Speedster's secret. The League doesn't leave anyone behind. Let's make you right, buddy.
11:39You know, that's just what I was gonna say.
11:43You're gonna be fighting the Justice League.
11:45Hey, Metropolis!
11:46There's nothing more high stakes than the boss battles we have in this game.
11:50These are gods like Green Lantern, Batman, Superman, The Flash.
11:57So, what's the plan?
11:59That point the game really opens up. We start to see players look at their weaponry and really ask the
12:04question, like, how am I gonna kill the Justice League?
12:07Yeah, looking forward to killing the Justice League and all, but, ah, well, you know, these guns are a bit
12:13shit.
12:14Oh, no offense.
12:16Then head northwest. That's the last known of a Gotham arms dealer who's dug into Metropolis. Oswald Cobblepot.
12:24Freakin' Penguin!
12:26You wanna last more than ten seconds against the League? Cobblepot's been running anti-meta weapons for years. I want
12:32him recruited and brought back to the Hall of Justice.
12:37Oh, I'm gonna recruit the shit out of him.
12:40Since Batman Arkham Knight, the Penguin is no longer confined to Gotham City. He's made a name for himself in
12:46Metropolis as the authority on anti-meta human weapons. Now, Waller wants the squad to recruit him for Argus.
12:53I see you've already stolen traversal equipment. You'll need it to stay off the streets. Setting a new recon point.
13:01Go.
13:02At the heart of each character's playstyle is their traversal. Traversal gives the player total freedom. Every character has their
13:08own way of getting around that determines how the player moves through this world.
13:13Don't like to bust, but how great was I?
13:19Controlling a superhero character is fundamentally a power fantasy for all players. We wanted movement through the city to be
13:26fun. Just existing and moving around in Metropolis is a good time.
13:30Metropolis is quite a normal city. Well, as normal as a city can be in the DC universe.
13:38We spend a lot of time trying to get that art direction correct, trying to get the feel for it
13:43correct. You get to see all the kind of DC lore that builds this space.
13:50Let me do the talking with Penguin, okay?
13:53Not just a building, it's a daily planet. You know, there's a lot we can inject into the city that
13:59makes it more than just a city.
14:02Penguin is not truly a penguin.
14:06Yeah, mate. And I'm not a boomerang.
14:09It is known for its size, its scale. Anything from the DC lore, you look at Metropolis as the city
14:16of tomorrow.
14:17When did Penguin get out anyway?
14:19Out. He was barely in. Money talks creeps walk, you know?
14:24I hear that.
14:27It's just a great way for players to experience Metropolis in a new way.
14:44G'day, Pengo. Remember me?
14:49No. Ain't this a right rose gallery? Who's the big pleader? Think his cousin used to work for me.
14:58Ooh. Which one?
15:00Let's get him out of a circus. We're getting the hell out of the city before Argus finds us. You
15:05in?
15:08But we are working for Argus.
15:11You bloody what?
15:12Real slick, Shuck.
15:15Good talk. Nice catching up. Give my regards to the locals.
15:26Traversal is at the very core of our game. You will need to be on the move and master each
15:30character's movements if you want to succeed.
15:34Harley's grapple is made to let her take advantage of the environment to quickly get out of troublesome situations.
15:39Or she can use it to quickly close the distance to introduce them to her baseball bat.
15:46Swinging from the background lets her circumvent the trooper's shield and flank them.
15:55It can also let her catapult herself into the air to shoot the corrupted from above.
16:00Now that you've seen some of Harley's combat in this scene, let's explore the rest of the squad's unique playstyles
16:05in other encounters.
16:06Captain Boomerang uses a mix between sniper rifles, SMGs and shotguns.
16:10What's cracking?
16:11Each character has an iconic melee attack that can be used to create what we call juggle kills and also
16:16break enemies' shields.
16:17Juggling an enemy with a melee attack means they take guaranteed critical hits from all the guns for a short
16:22period after.
16:24Shoot enemies in their legs and then close the distance to do a shield harvesting strike to get some shield
16:28back.
16:32Let's shift focus to King Shark.
16:37King Shark is literally death from above, which he gladly shows with his Atlantean drop attack.
16:43He's the character that can take the most punishment.
16:46Heavy weapons, assault rifles and shotguns and his trusted cleavers, sickles and combat knives for some brawling action.
16:52For the bigger enemies, each character gets a super powerful single target attack.
16:57The suicide strike.
16:58This one shots any enemy hit, but it takes longer to recharge, so it's important to use it tactically.
17:04Finally, Deadshot.
17:07His traversal is made to let him create his own vantage points.
17:11This works great with his weapon loadout with sniper rifles, assault rifles and pistols.
17:15For more up close action, Deadshot relies on his iconic wrist cannons.
17:19One thing we really wanted to bring into this game was a reimagined version of the Orc encounter system.
17:24And mix that with our traversal and shooter gameplay.
17:28Introducing, Countershot.
17:29Each enemy has a different reaction to the Countershot.
17:31Some will be stunned, some will take damage, some will be interrupted and then get really annoyed.
17:37Now let's take a look at Harley absolutely demolished Brainiac's forces with all these tools.
17:46My shows all knock them dead material.
17:59Oswald Cobblepot. My man. Do we have a job for you? Tell him, Quinn.
18:05You're making guns for us now, bird brain.
18:09Thanks for joining us for episode one of Suicide Squad Insider.
18:13What?
18:17I'd already started, so I followed through.
18:20In the months leading up to our launch on February 2nd, 2024, we're looking forward to showing more details and
18:25insights about Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League.
18:30In our next episode, we'll be deep diving into more gameplay, combat mechanics and how to take a fight to
18:35the enemy in your own unique style.
18:38I want to show you what happens next. Let's call it a sneak preview.
18:43We really want players to feel like they explored all these characters that we bring to life in this DC
18:48universe.
18:49I am going to enjoy this.
18:51You're starting with characters who aren't very powerful and through the story, you're learning how to use their skills and
18:58become powerful.
18:59We really want to take a deep dive into the RPG system.
19:01You have your enhanced traversal, you have gunplay, you have weapons, there are upgrades and unique talents.
19:09And all of that stuff fusing together to create this kind of unique experience.
19:13Together, we are unstoppable.
19:17Join me!
19:18I'm flying a lot.
