00:01:05S&L had floundered a bit
00:01:08The head of the network was talking about cancelling the show
00:01:12As a last resort, NBC turns to the man who created the show and then left it behind
00:01:18One, Lorne Michaels
00:01:21If Lorne had not come back, was the show over? It was
00:01:26He came back to save his first love
00:01:29And so the fate of Saturday Night Live rests on the shoulders of season 11
00:01:34It's a spin of the wheel to see if the show is going to live or die
00:01:46You may be wondering why you've never heard this story before
00:01:49Perhaps it has something to do with this
00:01:54NBC has asked me to read the following statement concerning last year's entire season
00:02:01Ready?
00:02:04It was all a dream
00:02:06A horrible, horrible dream
00:02:10Some might say a nightmare
00:02:13But time and reflection reveal something else entirely
00:02:17Something strange
00:02:19Something singular
00:02:22Something weird
00:02:26Live from New York on Saturday night
00:02:29I mean, look
00:02:38I think you can make a solid case for season 11 being one of the most important inflection points in
00:02:45the entire history of SNL
00:02:47It occurred at the proverbial fork in the road, right?
00:02:51It could have been cancelled beforehand
00:02:54You had Lorne's return
00:02:55It was so bad that it could have been cancelled after season 11
00:03:00I mean, a lot of things come together in season 11
00:03:06In show business, they say don't ever quit a hit show
00:03:10Because it's very hard to crank it up again if you have to go back or if you want to
00:03:16start it again
00:03:17And, you know, it's one of those things where you can't get into the same river twice
00:03:25When Brandon was trying to get me to come back in 1985
00:03:28Hello, I'm Brandon Tartikoff, president of NBC Entertainment
00:03:34Someone said, you know, you've already done Saturday Night Live
00:03:37Somebody who wants to be you does Saturday Night Live
00:03:40And I thought, oh, right, well, I kind of enjoyed being me
00:03:46Back at the helm of the program is Lorne Michaels, the original producer
00:03:50Who left the show five years ago and told the press how he felt
00:03:54When I left, I wanted to die
00:03:58Now, Lorne, you know, it was a big gamble for him to come back
00:04:03Because if it didn't work, the phone's not going to rank for Lorne Michaels anymore
00:04:07So he took a big risk
00:04:09But because he's so smart, he mitigated that risk very well
00:04:13He put Al Franken and Jim Downey as the named producers
00:04:19Hi, my apologies for the lack of camera presence
00:04:24You know, I was more surprised that he wanted to do it
00:04:27Then I was worried about us being set up for a critical assault
00:04:33He asked me and Al Franken and Tom Davis to come out to Hamptons to have a meeting with him
00:04:39And I was in Lorne's pool
00:04:43And he said, you like working with Layla on a bull seat, right?
00:04:47And I said, yeah, you know, I love Layla
00:04:51Saturday Night Live had been my first showbiz job
00:04:54And then I was the president of the Blues Brothers
00:05:01And Lorne asked me if I would come and help him find the cast
00:05:05What about the three of you?
00:05:07Franken and Davison, the Bullse, produce the show
00:05:10And we'll just start all over again
00:05:12Yeah, I was thrilled
00:05:13I was very happy
00:05:14I said, all right, I'll do it
00:05:18I didn't know that it would be such a difficult year
00:05:25When they came around to do it again
00:05:28It wasn't easy to talk Lorne into it, by the way
00:05:31I mean, it just wasn't easy
00:05:34But he came up with a great idea
00:05:38Once he decided to do it
00:05:40I remember Lorne was on the phone and said
00:05:43Bernie and I have got some great ideas for the cast
00:05:47We should have a gay guy
00:05:49And we should have a black woman
00:05:52Okay, thank you
00:05:55Sounds great, you know
00:05:57It was a good choice, Lorne
00:06:00It's me, Terry Sweeney
00:06:01Oh my God, I bet you're so happy I'm back
00:06:05Lorne was actually visiting out in California
00:06:07Looking for talent
00:06:08So I sent flowers to him
00:06:11I said, so you're looking for talent
00:06:15This is your chance
00:06:16Don't blow it
00:06:18By the way, I'm going to be openly gay
00:06:21I'm not going to hide it
00:06:23I was the first person hired for that season
00:06:26Starting Barry Sweeney
00:06:27He was taking a big risk
00:06:31Lorne had already talked to Randy Quaid
00:06:34Randy had been in the vacation picture
00:06:37He was really funny in that
00:06:39Banks been after me like flies on a rib roast
00:06:43Well, I thought he's a serious actor
00:06:45Randy Quaid for the last detail
00:06:48But then he said, well, he could play Ronald Reagan too
00:06:51And I was like, oh, okay
00:06:53Randy Quaid
00:06:54I think I had something to prove
00:06:56Which was that it had more to do with talent than anything else
00:06:59I tried to find the people that I thought were the most talented
00:07:03And I was starting from scratch
00:07:07We went to Chicago
00:07:09Joan Cusack was the first person we saw
00:07:14Tom was smitten immediately
00:07:17I'm flattered
00:07:18Oh, this girl is great
00:07:21Joan Cusack
00:07:22We saw Nora Dunn
00:07:25I did Pat Stevens in my audition
00:07:29There's bad things happening in the world
00:07:31That was a character I created when I was in high school
00:07:33Racism and wars and terrorism and that kind of thing
00:07:36But I still, I love hats
00:07:40Laura Dunn
00:07:41I was in Chicago
00:07:45Oh
00:07:46Performing with a comedy group called All You Can Eat
00:07:50We're going to liven up the activity a little bit
00:07:52By adding defense to figure skating
00:07:55Franken was really nice
00:07:57He said, you remind me of a cross between Albert Brooks and Eugene Levy
00:08:02I was like, ah, so Jew
00:08:05That's accurate
00:08:08I saw some shows in Canada
00:08:09And brought Mark McKinney and Bruce McCullough down
00:08:13Ready for a story?
00:08:15I belong to a Canadian comedy troupe called Kids in the Hall
00:08:18Lauren said, are you doing anything in October?
00:08:21And I took him literally and said, well, we have a couple of shows booked
00:08:27We went to Los Angeles
00:08:29We saw Lovitz
00:08:31And a Grambling show
00:08:33Nobody was laughing
00:08:35Except for Al
00:08:36Like
00:08:38And I remember thinking
00:08:39Thank God that guy from Saturday Night Live is laughing
00:08:44And we're back
00:08:44Oh, what a game it's going to be
00:08:46I'm Vinny Barber
00:08:47The Voice
00:08:48He did this thing where he was a baseball announcer
00:08:50And then he goes
00:08:52Oh, I don't believe it
00:08:53It's over the roof
00:08:55Small moments really capture you
00:08:57And you realize somebody's really good on television
00:08:59And look at this
00:09:00Why, it's a mackerel with a ball in his mouth
00:09:03Well, who would have believed it?
00:09:05That's apparently what got me the show
00:09:08John Lovitz
00:09:11We had a good run at the Comedy Store
00:09:14Dennis Miller was that night
00:09:16Reagan's our president again
00:09:17I think Reagan's a nice man
00:09:18Good leader
00:09:19He's getting up there, though
00:09:20I said to Lauren
00:09:21He'll kill on Update
00:09:22I think when a man gets to be 70
00:09:23We ought to start voting on him at the end of each week
00:09:26Dennis Miller
00:09:27And then Damon Wayans
00:09:30Yeah, I got fired
00:09:32We gonna talk about it
00:09:35I felt like I was born to be on Saturday Night Live
00:09:39And so I was not nervous at all for the audition
00:09:45We have speed
00:09:47Oh, I was like, all right, bring it, let's go
00:09:50I had been working on characters
00:09:52Homey the Clown
00:09:53Good evening, Jakku
00:09:55Men on films
00:09:57Let's go out
00:09:58Anton
00:09:59How you doing there, Mrs. Wayne?
00:10:01It's a pleasure to meet your acquaint
00:10:05I laughed so hard, I embarrassed myself
00:10:08Featuring Damon Wayans
00:10:12We found Denitra working at Bloomingdale's
00:10:15Welcome to Bloomingdale's
00:10:16Won't you try our new liberated fragrance feminist?
00:10:19She was in the lingerie department
00:10:21I'm working here at Bloomingdale's
00:10:22On a kind of a work exchange program
00:10:24With Bellevue Hospital
00:10:25I'm living in the intensive identity crisis wing
00:10:28Because I can't believe that I'm black
00:10:29And I said, Denitra, you're hired for the show
00:10:31You can quit your job
00:10:33She was like, no, I'm not quitting my job
00:10:39And then Lauren had the genius idea
00:10:42To take the cast of the breakfast club
00:10:47And try to do sketch comedy with him
00:10:51It's the shit, son
00:10:52I got the call
00:10:54I remember just being shocked
00:10:56I was going to be live
00:10:57From New York
00:10:58You know, on a show that meant so much to me
00:11:00As a kid growing up in New York
00:11:01You know
00:11:03I wanted to go younger
00:11:05I perhaps went too young
00:11:06But I think I wanted to go younger
00:11:08Anthony Michael Hall
00:11:11And his manager said
00:11:12You would probably want his best friend
00:11:15Well, I went, who's his best friend?
00:11:18Well, I'll see him
00:11:21How are you?
00:11:24Michael Hall said to me
00:11:27I'm going to go do SNL
00:11:28I'm going to get you an audition
00:11:29And I bet you're going to get yourself on the show, too
00:11:32So waiting for that pastor to repay a favor
00:11:34Forty years later
00:11:36I was just walking by
00:11:37The mic is on Jones
00:11:38Come on, Iron Man
00:11:39You got it in you
00:11:41Does the phrase chowder mean anything to you?
00:11:43Oh, yeah
00:11:44It says to me, fish
00:11:46Excuse me, I see that your boyfriend has showed up
00:11:49Well, mm-hmm
00:11:50Okay, hire him
00:12:00Live from New York
00:12:02The press conference
00:12:03To introduce the new cast members of Saturday Night Live
00:12:07Al Franken
00:12:08Not a cast member
00:12:10Randy Quaid
00:12:11A cast member
00:12:12Michael Hall
00:12:13A cast member
00:12:14Robert Downey
00:12:15A cast member
00:12:16Denitra Vance
00:12:17We were the cast that came back with Lorne Michaels
00:12:20And a lot was expected of us
00:12:23But Lorne's career was on the line
00:12:26Because he came back
00:12:29Hi there
00:12:30Thank you for coming
00:12:34The stakes were high
00:12:35But I think it started to feel weird
00:12:40Near the beginning
00:12:42It was not a cohesive kind of cast feel
00:12:46NBC is banking on the chemistry
00:12:49Between Randy Quaid
00:12:50Anthony Michael Hall
00:12:52Robert Downey
00:12:53One of the problems is that
00:12:54You have a lot of young people
00:12:56It was a young cast
00:12:57It's just something I really have always wanted to do
00:13:00And, uh
00:13:01As a teenager
00:13:02I honestly, I was very nervous
00:13:04Very excited
00:13:06I've really loved the show for a long time
00:13:08But, I mean, I don't know if I felt like I knew how to fit in
00:13:11Next thing you know, you're a 30 Rock with the team
00:13:13And Lorne
00:13:15Everyone was a newcomer
00:13:17And everyone was getting acclimated all at the same time
00:13:21Once you get to 8H
00:13:23You feel like
00:13:24Ooh, I'm walking in these hallowed halls
00:13:26This must be a dream
00:13:29But
00:13:29We hadn't worked together before
00:13:32And there was no clicking
00:13:34In the beginning
00:13:35That was hard
00:13:38I knew Eddie Murphy
00:13:40Eat a couple of bananas
00:13:41How much of that?
00:13:42Well, the buffet plate is $12.50
00:13:44And Eddie's advice to me was
00:13:45Write your own sketches
00:13:48Otherwise, they're gonna give you some black people shit
00:13:50To do
00:13:50And you ain't gonna like it
00:13:53Well, hey, take those bananas
00:13:56Remember that first show
00:13:57There really was
00:13:59A lot of rehearsal
00:14:00We had written
00:14:02Quite a lot
00:14:03Madonna will be the host
00:14:04On the November 9th season premiere
00:14:06And Madonna
00:14:07God bless her
00:14:08Agreed to do the first show
00:14:10Which gave it the right kind of style
00:14:11And
00:14:12And
00:14:13Um
00:14:14And
00:14:15We took off
00:14:19There were helicopters
00:14:20Around 30 Rock
00:14:21That week
00:14:22Madonna is a movie star
00:14:23A rock video sensation
00:14:25The world's most public woman
00:14:27D is Madonna
00:14:28Ow!
00:14:28It was a massive story
00:14:30It was two things coming together
00:14:31It was Lorne Michaels returning
00:14:32Lorne Michaels is returning
00:14:34After a five-year absence
00:14:35And Madonna had just married Sean Penn
00:14:37This was the wedding scene
00:14:38At the Malibu, California home
00:14:40Everybody was gonna be looking at the show
00:14:42Watch this Saturday
00:14:43When I host the season premiere
00:14:44Of Saturday Night Live
00:14:45It'll be hot
00:14:48It was just such an
00:14:49Eye-grabbing choice
00:14:51That people had to watch it
00:14:52Hi everybody
00:14:54My name is Madonna
00:14:54And I'll be your comedy love slave
00:14:56For the evening
00:14:59And it was exciting for me
00:15:01Harder than I'd recalled
00:15:03It was
00:15:04Um
00:15:09I had a sketch on
00:15:11I was
00:15:13Just
00:15:15Petrified
00:15:28In retrospect
00:15:29It doesn't make me laugh very much
00:15:30But
00:15:32I mean it was goofy
00:15:33You just had to go for it
00:15:34I was doing the salsa
00:15:35Like we're wearing tights
00:15:36I was actually an extra
00:15:38In it as well
00:15:40When I watch the show again
00:15:43What I'm not hearing is laughs
00:15:53It was very exciting
00:15:55But then
00:15:56Everything kind of
00:15:57I just knew the sense
00:15:59Was that it wasn't good
00:16:00Because it was like a funeral
00:16:01There was a lot of dark humor
00:16:04National Enquirer Theater
00:16:06Ended with Marilyn Monroe
00:16:08Being murdered
00:16:09Sweet dreams Marilyn
00:16:11It was mostly
00:16:13Strange conceptual ideas
00:16:16A little too much spice
00:16:18And maybe not enough
00:16:19Bread and butter
00:16:20Kind of sketches
00:16:21Yes you're going to hell
00:16:23For the life of
00:16:24False Mackey's
00:16:26We had this idea
00:16:28We would have a spot
00:16:29For different comedians
00:16:31Penn and Teller
00:16:32Took that spot
00:16:35My name is Penn Jillette
00:16:36This is my partner Teller
00:16:37We are Penn and Teller
00:16:39The first thing we did
00:16:41Was the water tank
00:16:42We didn't know how to do that
00:16:44And we didn't even get it right
00:16:46For the show
00:16:47He has sworn
00:16:48That he will not breathe again
00:16:50Until I find a card
00:16:51Selected freely
00:16:52By a member of this audience
00:16:53Lorne never knew this
00:16:54But we worked very close
00:16:56To the trick
00:16:57Not working at all
00:16:58I was going to
00:16:59Open that valve
00:17:00And it would have destroyed
00:17:02Studio 8-H
00:17:05And that would have been
00:17:06The end of our
00:17:06Career in show business
00:17:08Ladies and gentlemen
00:17:10Teller
00:17:10Ended
00:17:13You feel the nervousness
00:17:14With everybody
00:17:16Producers
00:17:17The writers
00:17:17The cast
00:17:20Because the show
00:17:21Wasn't funny
00:17:23We knew
00:17:24We all knew
00:17:25Well we've come to the end
00:17:27Of our show
00:17:28And I don't think
00:17:29The cast was featured
00:17:31Much
00:17:32It didn't introduce us
00:17:34Thank you for coming
00:17:37I don't know why
00:17:38It works this way
00:17:39But you can more quickly
00:17:41Damage the reputation
00:17:42Of the show
00:17:43Than you can rehabilitate it
00:17:46Like one bad show
00:17:47Can sink you
00:17:48And then
00:17:49Takes you almost a full season
00:17:51For people to start to go
00:17:52Hey you know
00:17:52It has gotten better
00:17:54But I think
00:17:55I think
00:17:56The critics had a lot to do
00:17:57With colouring
00:17:58The perception of the show
00:18:07A Saturday Night Live
00:18:08Now a theatre of cruelty
00:18:10Hold up the tent
00:18:11And let the series die
00:18:16The new Saturday Night Live
00:18:17Is for people
00:18:18Who get their kicks
00:18:23Tearing wings off flies
00:18:28Flush it
00:18:29Trash it
00:18:29Kiss it goodbye
00:18:31Because it was
00:18:32Lorne Michaels' return
00:18:33So it had more attention
00:18:34Than usual
00:18:36Struggles at the new
00:18:38Saturday Night
00:18:39Tasteless and witless
00:18:56When I think back on it
00:18:58I think that the viewers
00:18:59Had some questions
00:19:01Why did Lorne leave
00:19:03Why did he come back
00:19:04And where were all their
00:19:06Favorite funny people
00:19:08From the previous season
00:19:09Like Martin Short
00:19:10And Julia Louis-Dreyfus
00:19:12And Billy Crystal
00:19:15How did we get here?
00:19:17To answer that
00:19:18We must travel
00:19:19Back in time
00:19:22So there's two paradigms
00:19:24To casting
00:19:24Saturday Night Live
00:19:25One is you go out
00:19:27And you hire
00:19:29Basic unknowns
00:19:30And you develop them
00:19:32The second was what
00:19:34Dick did in season 10
00:19:36He put together
00:19:37A murderer's row
00:19:39Of people that
00:19:40We knew
00:19:42Billy Crystal
00:19:43Chief among them
00:19:45Oh
00:19:45Do I still look marvelous?
00:19:49Season 10
00:19:50Just a thrilling year for me
00:19:53We weren't coming to it
00:19:54As young fresh-faced
00:19:55Kids right out of
00:19:57You know
00:19:57Second City
00:20:00We were older
00:20:01We were seasoned
00:20:03The only drug we did
00:20:04Was Malox
00:20:06Officially it's got
00:20:07Like zero acceptance
00:20:10I don't swim
00:20:13Marty
00:20:13Bill Crystal
00:20:14Of course
00:20:15Chris Guest
00:20:16And Harry Shear
00:20:18They were all people
00:20:19That I suppose
00:20:20Could have been
00:20:21In the original cast
00:20:22Which I mean
00:20:23In the best sense
00:20:26You know when you laugh
00:20:27Your little things
00:20:28They go
00:20:28Bambi-bambi-bambi-bambi-bambi
00:20:35And at the end of that season
00:20:37This rap party
00:20:38Here at Rockefeller Center
00:20:39Celebrates not just
00:20:41The end of a season's work
00:20:42It also celebrates
00:20:44A ratings upswing
00:20:45Brandon Tartikoff calls me
00:20:47And asks if I would become
00:20:49The permanent host
00:20:50But it would be only
00:20:52On once a month
00:20:53Would you be interested?
00:20:54I said
00:20:54Well let me call everybody
00:20:56And make sure
00:20:57And then he never
00:20:58Called me back
00:21:00And so what happened
00:21:01Was in the interim
00:21:02Dick left
00:21:03And Lorne came back
00:21:06And wanted to
00:21:07Reinvent the show
00:21:08With a whole new cast
00:21:09Wanted to start from scratch
00:21:11Didn't want anybody
00:21:12Back
00:21:13Good night everybody
00:21:15My year was done
00:21:17You know I was
00:21:18That was it
00:21:21The show is
00:21:22About people at the
00:21:23Beginnings of their careers
00:21:24And the baby boom
00:21:25Generation had dominated
00:21:26The show
00:21:27For ten years
00:21:28So I decided
00:21:29To clean house
00:21:32But I don't think
00:21:34That the audience
00:21:34Understood
00:21:35Why they were seeing
00:21:36All these new faces
00:21:37Just a complete
00:21:38Wholesale changeover
00:21:41And so
00:21:42You take this group of people
00:21:44The cast
00:21:45And the writers
00:21:46Who have just been
00:21:47Through the dark side
00:21:49In episode one
00:21:51With Madonna
00:21:51They're looking for
00:21:53Love
00:21:54Enlightenment
00:21:55Some great material
00:21:58So they can say
00:21:58Okay we're back
00:21:59Ladies and gentlemen
00:22:01Chevy Chase
00:22:05He will help us
00:22:07He's the godsend
00:22:09Thank you very much
00:22:13You know that expression
00:22:15Never meet your idols
00:22:17Mr. Chase
00:22:18The cast wanted me to ask you
00:22:19If you could give us
00:22:20Any words of advice
00:22:21Or anything
00:22:21You know something
00:22:21That would help us
00:22:22In the Chevy
00:22:22Is kind of mean to us
00:22:24Certainly
00:22:24When you're having a barbecue
00:22:27Never pour the charcoal fluid
00:22:30Right on the charcoals
00:22:31After they've been
00:22:32Always wait till
00:22:33You know
00:22:33And then light the charcoals
00:22:34Because it would
00:22:34Boom like that
00:22:36He would say
00:22:37Well
00:22:38It'll never be
00:22:39What it was
00:22:39In the beginning
00:22:40Can I ask you
00:22:41One more question
00:22:41No I'm afraid
00:22:42I don't have any time
00:22:42Oh
00:22:42Thanks Marge
00:22:44Oh
00:22:45Good for you
00:22:45Yeah
00:22:48After the debacle
00:22:49Of the Madonna episode
00:22:50It turns out to be
00:22:52Just as bad
00:22:53If not worse
00:22:59The old ways failed
00:23:00But new signs of hope
00:23:03Emerged with a twist
00:23:04Of the truth
00:23:06The following
00:23:07Is a public service message
00:23:08From Pathological Liars Anonymous
00:23:11Hello
00:23:12My name is Tommy Flanagan
00:23:14And I'm a member
00:23:15Of Pathological Liars Anonymous
00:23:17In fact
00:23:18I'm
00:23:18I'm the president
00:23:20Of that organization
00:23:21Well
00:23:21I did my liar character
00:23:22The second show
00:23:23You'd be surprised
00:23:24How many famous people belong
00:23:26Well
00:23:26In fact
00:23:27At one of the meetings
00:23:28I met my wife
00:23:29Morgan Fairchild
00:23:33Yeah
00:23:34That's it
00:23:34Ticket
00:23:34I didn't know what to do
00:23:35With the character
00:23:36After the first time
00:23:37I didn't have a clue
00:23:38So then Lawrence said to me
00:23:39You should write it
00:23:40With A. Whitney Brown
00:23:42Oh Whitney Jesus
00:23:43Let himself go
00:23:46Give me a big hug
00:23:47You beautiful man
00:23:48Thank God you showed up
00:23:49Now I have to mention you
00:23:52I mean
00:23:52I mean Lovitz
00:23:53He is a ham
00:23:55And that opens up
00:23:57So many great possibilities
00:23:58For writing
00:23:59Yeah
00:24:00That's
00:24:01The
00:24:01Ticket
00:24:03Whitney said
00:24:04Why don't we make the lies
00:24:06Just
00:24:07Ridiculous
00:24:08So what are you in for it Tommy?
00:24:10Yeah I used to rob
00:24:10Five banks a day
00:24:11Six days a week
00:24:12Then on my day off
00:24:13I was a pickpocket
00:24:13Yeah that's it
00:24:14Ticket
00:24:15Within that format
00:24:16You can do almost anything
00:24:17Oh I went to Rome
00:24:19You see
00:24:19To convert the Pope
00:24:20And uh
00:24:22I was kidnapped
00:24:23By uh
00:24:23By uh
00:24:24Hare Krishna
00:24:25Yeah
00:24:26Yeah
00:24:26Hare Krishna
00:24:26Yeah
00:24:27You know
00:24:28The whole country
00:24:29Was imitating my character
00:24:30Like everybody
00:24:31That's the ticket
00:24:33Biggest catchphrase
00:24:34Yeah
00:24:35That's the ticket
00:24:36It came out of the show
00:24:36I think ever
00:24:37You know I built this studio
00:24:39Yeah
00:24:39My name is uh
00:24:40Tommy Flanagan
00:24:41See Tommy Flanagan
00:24:43People were starting to come up
00:24:44Under me on the street
00:24:45And say my wife
00:24:46Morgan Fairchild
00:24:46How do you like that
00:24:47My wife
00:24:48Bade my bell
00:24:48Yeah my wife
00:24:49Morgan Fairchild
00:24:52Yeah that's the ticket
00:24:54He was like the hero
00:24:56And like me and Robert Downey
00:24:58Be like
00:24:58What the
00:24:59This liar character again
00:25:01What's going on
00:25:04When someone starts
00:25:05To really shine
00:25:06Like Lovitz
00:25:07We had to keep
00:25:08Using them
00:25:09You know
00:25:10But
00:25:10You're not introducing
00:25:12New actors
00:25:12You're not introducing
00:25:13Your new players
00:25:14So
00:25:14Hey what are you doing
00:25:15What does it look like
00:25:17I'm doing
00:25:17I can't take it anymore
00:25:20I was always
00:25:21Getting on top
00:25:22Of the writers
00:25:23Like you have to like
00:25:24Get to know these guys
00:25:25And showcase them more
00:25:27But the relationship
00:25:29Between the writing staff
00:25:30And the cast
00:25:31Was the issue
00:25:34When I look back
00:25:35I have some memories
00:25:36Of it being difficult
00:25:37I think for a lot of writers
00:25:38To figure out
00:25:38How to write for this kid
00:25:40I think it was
00:25:40A big challenge
00:25:42Really
00:25:44Sorry
00:25:45I mean okay
00:25:47I could feel
00:25:48Something was wrong
00:25:50And that's why
00:25:51I was like
00:25:51Hey give me the ball
00:25:53I know what this needs
00:25:54But
00:25:55They would shoot
00:25:56My ideas down
00:25:57Could you wrap
00:25:58This present for me please
00:25:59I brought
00:26:00Al Franken
00:26:01A sketch
00:26:01Called
00:26:02The Gifted Rapper
00:26:03See I'm the Gifted Rapper
00:26:05And this is what I do
00:26:06I wrap your package
00:26:07While I rhyme to you
00:26:08And he read the sketch
00:26:10And was like
00:26:13I just don't get
00:26:14The rap thing
00:26:15And I was like
00:26:16Yeah but 50 million
00:26:17Other people do
00:26:18Yeah
00:26:19Ha ha ha
00:26:21I had a real thing
00:26:23About the writers
00:26:23Because I didn't go to college
00:26:25How's a guy from Harvard
00:26:27Gonna write for me
00:26:29But I never had trouble
00:26:31Writing my own material
00:26:34You know Mr. Minister
00:26:35It's ironic
00:26:36That you're here today
00:26:37Because Chaka Khan
00:26:39Will be here tomorrow
00:26:42Nora did write for herself
00:26:44Nora created the
00:26:45Pat Stevens character
00:26:46Which was hilarious
00:26:47Muslims denounced
00:26:48The names we had
00:26:49Because they were
00:26:50Branded on us
00:26:51By the white slave master
00:26:52Such as Malcolm X
00:26:53Muhammad Ali
00:26:55Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
00:26:56Mr. T
00:26:59No I
00:27:00I know exactly
00:27:00What you mean
00:27:01Because some
00:27:01Some people call me
00:27:03Patty and it
00:27:03Drives me bananas
00:27:05Um
00:27:06I had written
00:27:07My material
00:27:08But we didn't have
00:27:10Just comedians on there
00:27:11We had actors
00:27:12People that I
00:27:12Recognized from film
00:27:14They needed a script
00:27:15They needed a character
00:27:19That's just not
00:27:20What's internet life is
00:27:23My first hosting job
00:27:26For SNL
00:27:28In only like
00:27:29The fourth episode
00:27:31Of this brand new company
00:27:34I remember having
00:27:36The feeling
00:27:37That everybody
00:27:38Was trying out
00:27:39Their own material
00:27:40Basically
00:27:41It's a career move
00:27:42It's finally my chance
00:27:43To prove once and for all
00:27:44That I'm more than
00:27:45Just another teen actor
00:27:46Young actor
00:27:46Brat Pack Dookie
00:27:48They were trying
00:27:49To make their own identity
00:27:50Rather than
00:27:51The identity of SNL
00:27:52I think that was
00:27:54The whole problem
00:27:58But I do remember
00:28:00Doing Master Thespian
00:28:02With John Lovitz
00:28:02I'm awaiting the arrival
00:28:04Of my mentor
00:28:05And acting teacher
00:28:06We gelled beautifully
00:28:08Oh
00:28:08Your majesty
00:28:09I am honored
00:28:10By your presence
00:28:11Thank you
00:28:11We did the whole
00:28:13Acting thing
00:28:14I mean people are still
00:28:15Yelling that phrase
00:28:17At me
00:28:18Acting
00:28:19Acting
00:28:21There was this feeling
00:28:23Oh yeah
00:28:24Thank God
00:28:25We got a sure thing
00:28:26At last
00:28:27With Lovitz
00:28:30Lovitz was the breakout
00:28:31But Dennis did great
00:28:33Thank you
00:28:34These little points of light
00:28:36Started to emerge
00:28:36Dennis Miller started
00:28:37To like cement
00:28:38President Reagan
00:28:40Has ordered lie detector tests
00:28:41For all government employees
00:28:42With access to top secret information
00:28:44Pretty much the most tart
00:28:46And cynical
00:28:47Of their political commentators ever
00:28:49Reagan answered
00:28:50I don't know
00:28:50To all 15
00:28:51And the machine said
00:28:52He was telling the truth
00:28:55Weekend Update was like
00:28:56This little island of success
00:28:58All the way through
00:28:59I'm just gonna have to
00:29:00Take a look-see
00:29:01I remember the John Lithgow show
00:29:03Being very strong
00:29:04It puts all the other problems
00:29:06That fell in perspective
00:29:07When something like this happens
00:29:08Makes you kind of want to
00:29:10Partly because John Lithgow
00:29:11Was a really great
00:29:12Live performer
00:29:18My God
00:29:19That's the biggest bug
00:29:19I've ever seen
00:29:23But
00:29:24They're digging themselves
00:29:25Out of a
00:29:26Really, really big hole
00:29:27From the first two weeks
00:29:35The season was approaching
00:29:37A tipping point
00:29:38But
00:29:38Nothing turns around
00:29:40A bad week
00:29:40Quicker than a good host
00:29:42Just ask anyone
00:29:43Who is there
00:29:44For the next episode
00:29:47Any questions?
00:29:49And I have to say
00:29:50I don't know how many
00:29:51Times I've done the show
00:29:52But it's still
00:29:53How many times?
00:29:54Have I done ten?
00:29:55That's ten hosts?
00:29:56Yeah
00:29:56Ten hostings
00:29:57Yeah, okay
00:29:58That's a big deal, man
00:29:59That's a big deal
00:30:00Four
00:30:02Three
00:30:03Two
00:30:03One
00:30:05You don't get to ten
00:30:06Unless you have one
00:30:07Joy to the world
00:30:10The Lord is come
00:30:12They lit the Rockefeller Center
00:30:14Christmas tree
00:30:16That Monday
00:30:19And I'm on SNL for the first time
00:30:22It is the single most exciting thing
00:30:26That has happened in my career
00:30:29You meet everybody on Monday
00:30:32They write
00:30:33All Monday night
00:30:34And all Tuesday night
00:30:36And I had never been in a writer's room
00:30:40There's no way you were going to tear me out of there
00:30:42It's like it was just too fast
00:30:43I had tickets to the inner sanctum
00:30:46Tom Hanks sat in to write a little bit
00:30:49I'd never had a host before sit in
00:30:52Today's my first day
00:30:54I know
00:30:58Al and I had written this sketch called Quirky
00:31:00Oh, Quirky
00:31:01We had had it at read-through
00:31:03Three or four times before Tom Hanks
00:31:05To this day
00:31:06When I see Al Franken
00:31:08I always go
00:31:08Do you think this week
00:31:09We'll get Quirky on?
00:31:11And then Tom Hanks read Quirky
00:31:16Oh
00:31:16Tell right away that he was just made for this
00:31:19Made for this job
00:31:22Ladies and gentlemen
00:31:24Tom Hanks
00:31:30The cliche of saying it was a dream come true
00:31:33Doesn't do it justice
00:31:34It's a fantasy made real
00:31:37Every Saturday night I watched the show
00:31:39And I'd sit there and think
00:31:42Someday
00:31:44Someday
00:31:44Someday
00:31:44I'm going to watch this show on my own TV
00:31:49I was amazed because
00:31:52Everything got laughs
00:31:53This edition of Entertainment Tonight
00:32:00Al and Tom
00:32:01They said, can you do that thing?
00:32:03Can you make the sound of Entertainment Tonight?
00:32:05You mean like
00:32:05Boo, boo, boo
00:32:06You mean like
00:32:07Yeah, do that, do that
00:32:08Died today at the old Washtabacker's home
00:32:10In Van Nuys
00:32:11Boo, boo
00:32:14Tom Hanks' first time hosting
00:32:15And I'd written a piece about two fishermen
00:32:18Talking about how they love and hate the sea
00:32:21I hope that today our catch will be good
00:32:24At some point, Randy's mustache gets wet
00:32:28And for the first time, my sketch gets laughs
00:32:37So, quirky
00:32:44A married couple go out to dinner
00:32:46And they talk about how close they are
00:32:49I don't think that there is anything in your innermost thoughts
00:32:53That could surprise me or shock me
00:32:55Because we know each other so well
00:32:56Well, here's something
00:33:00You know, sometimes I have this fantasy
00:33:02That you'd die
00:33:05Just has it very detailed, worked out
00:33:10The only solution, of course, is one of those 18 or 19 year old au pair girls from Sweden
00:33:16Does she cook?
00:33:21Oh, sure, great cook
00:33:22Oh, what does she cook?
00:33:24Uh, spetzel
00:33:25It's this noodle dumpling kind of thing
00:33:27Oh, the kids love it
00:33:28You should see them
00:33:28More spetzel, more spetzel
00:33:30More spetzel, more spetzel
00:33:33My sister?
00:33:35That's the magic elixir
00:33:36Everybody hopes for
00:33:39Come on
00:33:40Here's your steak knife, sir
00:33:41Oh, my God
00:33:43I stabbed
00:33:44Lauren Michaels said
00:33:45It's a pretty good show Saturday
00:33:47Nice, good show
00:33:48Pretty good show
00:33:48Good efforts
00:33:49Good efforts, everybody
00:33:50Any ideas for this week?
00:33:51Anybody?
00:33:51Anybody?
00:33:52Good night, everybody
00:33:53Thanks
00:33:55The fact that they just put their head down and plowed through it was actually a bit of a life
00:34:00lesson for him
00:34:01Don't read the bad reviews, because someone out there is just going to hate your guts
00:34:10We needed time to gel
00:34:12Find our strengths and find our voice
00:34:16But I'll tell you something about 8H
00:34:24It was such a big deal that Terry Sweeney was cast as the first openly gay cast member
00:34:32I would say not only of SNL but like in TV and I feel like he doesn't get the credit
00:34:39that he deserves for really being the first and breaking that mold that was a big deal in a very
00:34:46closeted Reagan era world
00:34:49Give me a baby
00:34:50Miss, I'm gay, a homosexual, a screaming man, a screaming queen, a miss, help lady, please
00:34:57What are you trying to say?
00:34:59I'm a fag lady, fag with a capital S
00:35:02I remember telling a friend of mine, I got SNL and I'm going to be openly gay about it and
00:35:07he goes, wow, you're so brave, I could never throw my career away like that
00:35:151985, there were thousands of people dying of AIDS
00:35:19If you were gay, you were in your own horror movie
00:35:22And now in 1985, Hollywood again is gripped by paranoia, this time provoked by the tragic AIDS outbreak
00:35:29So pink listing, we took it on
00:35:31Pink listing
00:35:32All right, roll it
00:35:34Speed
00:35:35Sound
00:35:37Angel, I want you to know, I'm not just doing this for the money
00:35:44Wait a minute, you're gay
00:35:48Yes, I'm gay, and now you all know
00:35:51The bravest thing we could do was to go straight and to go, there's AIDS, people are hiding about being
00:35:59gay, people are dying, this exists
00:36:03Glenn, I admire your guts, and I think you should know that I'm gay too
00:36:13Living out this little charade, you know, was not our choice, it was a matter of survival, but I suppose
00:36:19you wouldn't know anything about that
00:36:20I got letters from people who said, I'm here with my parents who are laughing at the show
00:36:25And they don't know I'm gay
00:36:29And, um, I saw another gay person on television
00:36:34That changed my life
00:36:48The weird year is the polite way to put it, right?
00:36:50Most people say to me it was the bad year that we were on
00:36:55It was a whole new thing
00:36:57Lauren was coming back in after the dark years of someone else
00:37:01And he was just exploding with ideas
00:37:03I remember, we didn't think we belonged there
00:37:05We were just weird, weird guys
00:37:09Who did this weird little show
00:37:12That we really, really liked
00:37:16And then, because of Lorne Michaels
00:37:19The Saturday Night Live changed everything
00:37:21One card, no threads, no wires
00:37:24It rises right out of the frame
00:37:28The Upside Down bit is probably the best TV bit we ever did
00:37:32Are we live?
00:37:34Yeah!
00:37:35First of all, it completely fucked us up
00:37:37We were Upside Down in the rehearsal for an hour and a half
00:37:41All the veins in our face broke
00:37:43And they had a ton of makeup on
00:37:45It would make us look okay
00:37:46I think we've shown that Penn and Teller don't need gimmicks
00:37:49We don't need punchlines
00:37:51We are indeed the best magicians working today
00:37:55We are Penn and Teller
00:37:57No longer comedy magicians
00:37:59But rather real magicians
00:38:05I remember Lorne Michaels saying to us
00:38:08You can write a 7
00:38:11You can push your way through to an 8 or 9
00:38:15But you don't get a 10
00:38:17Unless there's a lot of luck involved
00:38:22That's the only 10 we've ever had on this show
00:38:30That 11th year was probably the biggest risk
00:38:33Where the division between what worked and what did not work
00:38:37Ooh, that was painfully obvious
00:38:41We learned that stuff, even if it looks very promising
00:38:45Doesn't always fly
00:38:46It's a little bit like those old films of airplanes
00:38:49Before the Wright brothers trying to take off
00:38:52And you go, hey, that one looks pretty good
00:38:53It's kind of flapping along
00:38:54And then all the wings broke off
00:38:58If it didn't pop
00:38:59That was running a risk
00:39:01That the critics would say
00:39:03This whole format doesn't work anymore
00:39:12Anytime it seems easy
00:39:14And flowing and inevitable
00:39:16There's danger at the door
00:39:19Control!
00:39:21I'll tell you what happened
00:39:22I don't know what story you heard
00:39:23But this is what happened
00:39:24What happened was
00:39:27Everything Eddie said came true
00:39:30They started writing me in their sketches
00:39:32And there was one sketch in particular
00:39:54And I'm like, hell no
00:39:55I said, listen, my mother gonna watch this show
00:39:57I can't do this
00:39:59I won't do this
00:40:03Well, he was mad because he felt like
00:40:05He couldn't be funny the way he's funny
00:40:07But, you know, we were very young
00:40:08And there was a lot at stake
00:40:10Is this on?
00:40:11No!
00:40:12We get this sketch
00:40:14Where John Lovitz
00:40:16Is playing Mr. Monopoly
00:40:18Yes
00:40:19He wrote the Mr. Monopoly sketch
00:40:22I think you left out the word classic
00:40:23The classic Mr. Monopoly sketch
00:40:25Who's that fellow in the big top hat
00:40:28Buying up the real estate
00:40:29Just like that
00:40:30Mr. Monopoly
00:40:33Griffin Dunn was hosting
00:40:36Griffin Dunn is arrested by these two sheriffs
00:40:38Hey man, watch the suit
00:40:40Shut up before I kick in your little puny behind
00:40:43Oddly enough, that was a sketch
00:40:45I thought went the best during dress
00:40:47You know, I'm playing a
00:40:49A sort of Scarface-y kind of guy
00:40:51We've got the whole transaction on videotape, Carrasco
00:40:54We've got three eyewitnesses
00:40:55That saw you kill that undercover car
00:40:57Good afternoon, gentlemen
00:40:59I believe you're detaining an angel Carrasco
00:41:02I'm representing him on this matter
00:41:05Get out of jail free
00:41:08You're that guy from the game
00:41:10So we did the sketch
00:41:11And then after dress rehearsals from 8 to 10
00:41:14Lauren and the writers go over the show
00:41:17They'll maybe do 14 sketches
00:41:19They cut 6 and that leaves 8
00:41:20Yes, come, come to A.D.
00:41:24Damon was unhappy
00:41:25And he had his history with sketches getting cut
00:41:27Come on, what are you, chicken?
00:41:32And I snapped
00:41:34I just did not care
00:41:37Hey, easy on the suit
00:41:38Go shut up and sit down
00:41:40Damon starts doing his lines
00:41:41Like a very effeminate gay guy
00:41:44Yeah, you're going to jail for a long, long time
00:41:47I wouldn't be so sure about that
00:41:48My lord's gonna be here any minute
00:41:50I don't think you get the message, Carrasco
00:41:52We got you cold
00:41:53I purposely did that
00:41:56Because I wanted him to fire me
00:41:58Yes, we've got the whole transaction on videotape
00:42:01We've got three people that saw you kill that undercover cop
00:42:05I thought it was weird
00:42:06But people still laughed
00:42:09And then Lauren fired him pretty much as he walked off the stage
00:42:15Having not fired anybody for the first five years
00:42:17It was really, really hard
00:42:20But it had to be done
00:42:25Damon broke the ultimate golden rule
00:42:29Which is no surprises
00:42:32You cannot go rogue
00:42:34You cannot try to steal a sketch
00:42:37You know, a lot of people don't know this about Saturday Night Live
00:42:40But the actual amount of improvisation on that show is minuscule
00:42:45Maybe one line a year
00:42:47I would bet one line every five years
00:42:50Good night, everybody!
00:42:52After the show, I said, that was career suicide
00:42:56Tom Davis said, no, no, no
00:42:59We are all going to be standing in line within three years
00:43:03To see a Damon Wayans movie
00:43:05You know, that was not career suicide
00:43:09That was a career move
00:43:12See, now what we have here is a failure to communicate
00:43:19I think when Damon got fired, I think that shook people up
00:43:22Because it just was like a schism, you know
00:43:27Yeah, at some point there was kind of a chill
00:43:29It's like, we might not finish the season
00:43:31I mean, that definitely happened
00:43:36Doing Saturday Night Live is a difficult task
00:43:40You guys had better quit doing this
00:43:42You're going to hurt yourself one of these days
00:43:44And if it's not clicking
00:43:47What?
00:43:48It's an impossible task
00:43:52Stay with me
00:43:56I need you now more than ever
00:43:58There was another dip for a while
00:44:03Successive shows that just...
00:44:07Because the show was a little in disrepair
00:44:09It was hard to get hosts to want to be on the show
00:44:12I don't mind making a fool out of myself
00:44:14I mean, I don't think I'd be here tonight, otherwise
00:44:19And I asked a few of my friends to do the show
00:44:21Can you give me a light?
00:44:23No, I don't smoke
00:44:23No, I mean a bud light
00:44:29It was just enormously frustrating
00:44:32And I remember George Meyer going
00:44:35Show dying
00:44:39Show dying
00:44:41And I'd go
00:44:43Okay, George
00:44:47Hard to believe
00:44:48But I think the boys wrote that themselves
00:44:51At the time
00:44:52It almost seemed a little shameful
00:44:53Oh, no!
00:44:55Oh, wow
00:44:56It's some sort of malfunction here
00:44:58Shameful for the show
00:44:59To have to find its way again
00:45:01You know
00:45:01Um
00:45:05Yeah
00:45:07And then there's the reviews
00:45:09Why, they've all been
00:45:09And we have a new cast
00:45:12Yes
00:45:13Yes
00:45:14Are you going to talk to Lorne
00:45:15Season 11?
00:45:16Gee
00:45:16Ask him if he ever got scared
00:45:20Lorne, were you ever really scared?
00:45:21I can't
00:45:22He's such a master at this stuff
00:45:24But I cannot imagine that he knew
00:45:26How it was going to play out
00:45:30Yeah
00:45:31Um
00:45:31I think the 85 season
00:45:33It was two steps forward
00:45:35One step back
00:45:36Somebody would be brilliant
00:45:37And then
00:45:38But I realized that it was
00:45:39It was not meshing
00:45:44Look, you gotta feel
00:45:45For everybody, right?
00:45:46Because
00:45:47Al and Tom
00:45:48Are really in charge
00:45:51I mean
00:45:51Who's really in charge?
00:45:53There was
00:45:53A lot of gray
00:45:58Lauren asked me and Tom
00:45:59To produce
00:46:00And Lauren
00:46:01Was the executive producer
00:46:03I guess
00:46:04And
00:46:04He was the boss
00:46:07We were trying to get things done
00:46:09In the morning
00:46:11But when our executive producer
00:46:13Lauren
00:46:14Came in
00:46:15At 4 or 5 o'clock
00:46:16He would change
00:46:17Our decisions
00:46:20And
00:46:21So
00:46:23Eventually
00:46:23Nobody did anything
00:46:24Until Lauren
00:46:25Came in
00:46:26One of the legacies
00:46:28Of season 11
00:46:28Is that
00:46:29Brandon
00:46:30Calls Lauren
00:46:32Well into the season
00:46:33And says
00:46:34You gotta run this show
00:46:36Like
00:46:37You're the boss
00:46:38And so
00:46:39That constant came back
00:46:42And I knew
00:46:43The direction
00:46:44I wanted to go
00:46:47I started to go back
00:46:48To
00:46:49Well I might as well
00:46:49Do a show
00:46:50That
00:46:51That
00:46:51I'd like to see
00:46:54We began taking
00:46:56Bigger chances
00:46:57I think
00:46:58He's putting up
00:46:59A brain front
00:46:59Hi
00:47:00Can I get your attention
00:47:02Just for a second
00:47:03As you all know
00:47:05The network
00:47:06Has decided to bring in
00:47:07Francis Ford Cobb
00:47:08To direct tonight's show
00:47:09This means that he has
00:47:11Complete creative control
00:47:13The conceit was that
00:47:14Coppola was directing the show
00:47:16It created a nice
00:47:18Kind of surreal
00:47:19Meta effect
00:47:20I want you all to go out there
00:47:22And do the best show
00:47:22You can tonight
00:47:23We've got George Wendt as host
00:47:25From Cheers
00:47:25And it could be a great show
00:47:27Hey you want to host
00:47:29Saturday Night Live
00:47:29Francis Ford Coppola
00:47:32Is going to direct
00:47:32And I was like
00:47:33Yeah
00:47:34I'm a huge fan
00:47:37Huge
00:47:37I wasn't expecting
00:47:39Him to really direct
00:47:41But
00:47:47This was the only time
00:47:49Ever
00:47:50They didn't play
00:47:51The theme song
00:47:52From Saturday Night Live
00:47:54But they had
00:47:55Musical guest
00:47:56Fill of glass
00:48:00Excuse me for asking
00:48:01But is it true
00:48:02You're the boss now
00:48:03Well yeah
00:48:04I'm directing the show
00:48:05Thank God
00:48:07Finally someone
00:48:08Who knows what they're doing
00:48:10You're the only one
00:48:11That can save this
00:48:12Sinking ship
00:48:13Thank you Terry
00:48:14But I've really
00:48:14Got to go along
00:48:15This show tonight's
00:48:16Going to be my ode
00:48:17To live television
00:48:18Oh brilliant
00:48:20Lord
00:48:20Never would have
00:48:21Thought of that
00:48:26To walk out to home base
00:48:29Place New York City
00:48:31Time now
00:48:32Eerie Philip Glass music
00:48:40That's daunting
00:48:41Thanks very much
00:48:46I have to say
00:48:47This has really been
00:48:48A hectic week for me
00:48:49Quite a contrast
00:48:50From the past few months
00:48:51You know
00:48:51When I've basically
00:48:53Just been sitting around
00:48:54On a bar stool
00:48:54Drinking beer all day
00:48:56And of course
00:48:57Before that
00:48:58I was working very hard
00:48:59On cheers
00:48:59Alright cut
00:49:00Great
00:49:00Great
00:49:02Why are we stopping now
00:49:03Well don't worry George
00:49:04You were great
00:49:04But I want to get
00:49:05One more take
00:49:05You know
00:49:06Just to be sure
00:49:07Well
00:49:08That was
00:49:09It was kind of a joke
00:49:10Francis
00:49:10I don't know
00:49:11If they're going to
00:49:11Laugh again
00:49:12Don't worry about it
00:49:13You stand by
00:49:15I would say
00:49:15A lot of times
00:49:16I go
00:49:16You know
00:49:17We're live
00:49:17But we're not
00:49:18Taking advantage of it
00:49:20You know
00:49:21And Francis Ford Coppola
00:49:22He used the show
00:49:25So when he says that
00:49:26I want you to react
00:49:27By laughing
00:49:28But if you don't
00:49:29Feel like laughing
00:49:30I want you to go back
00:49:31And remember something
00:49:32From your childhood
00:49:35Francis was one of those shows
00:49:37You just knew right away
00:49:38That it was going to work
00:49:40Quite a contrast actually
00:49:42From the past few months
00:49:43Where basically
00:49:43I've been sitting around
00:49:44On a bar stool
00:49:45Drinking beer all day
00:49:50And then before that
00:49:52I was working on cheers
00:50:08And when Francis came
00:50:09He brought the whole cast together
00:50:13It was the first time
00:50:15That that happened
00:50:32We wanted to do the whole show
00:50:34As a single piece
00:50:35Francis has found himself
00:50:38On this failing show
00:50:39Going through this crisis
00:50:41Of confidence
00:50:42Maybe I have lost it
00:50:45Maybe I never had it
00:50:46Maybe I just got lucky
00:50:48With The Godfather
00:50:49And Godfather 2
00:50:50The conversation
00:50:52And Apocalypse Now
00:50:53Which was exactly the same
00:50:55As the cast
00:50:56Do you see what I'm up against?
00:50:58You know
00:50:58I mean I've been here for five months
00:50:59All I've played is supporting roles
00:51:00And now it's like
00:51:01I have six shows left
00:51:02In which to emerge
00:51:03I mean
00:51:03Absolutely
00:51:04I just feel
00:51:04I hear you
00:51:05I hear you
00:51:05I'm lost
00:51:06He just gave everybody
00:51:10Renewed energy
00:51:11To go out and try
00:51:12And do the show
00:51:12And that was the theme
00:51:13Of that show
00:51:14Well you know
00:51:16Improvise
00:51:16Or do something
00:51:17Really unusual
00:51:19Let them see you
00:51:20Shake them up a little bit
00:51:21God you're showing the money
00:51:23Man I've been playing it
00:51:23Much too safe
00:51:24Thank you
00:51:24There you go
00:51:25Alright
00:51:25Who was that?
00:51:27Everybody was in the show
00:51:28And everybody had more to do
00:51:30Than they ever did
00:51:31Okay
00:51:32Cue to art card
00:51:34How did he do that?
00:51:35Guess who's going to be
00:51:36The new sparkled in girl?
00:51:38Denitra really loved that episode
00:51:40Francis Ford Coppola
00:51:41Comes in and goes
00:51:42The scene doesn't seem
00:51:43To have anything to do
00:51:44With the black experience
00:51:45Don't you agree?
00:51:46Um
00:51:47I guess so
00:51:48Can I see the writers?
00:51:49Writers get in here!
00:51:51She loved that
00:51:56Well why aren't there
00:51:57Any black women writers
00:51:58On this show?
00:51:59She was just like
00:52:00Letting go all that
00:52:01That was underneath
00:52:02They don't know me
00:52:05They don't know the real me
00:52:07This isn't me
00:52:09I am somebody
00:52:12Never seen an episode of SNL
00:52:14That looked like that
00:52:15Never
00:52:16It was groundbreaking
00:52:18I thought
00:52:20Were the ratings good?
00:52:22I mean did it
00:52:22No
00:52:23For that episode
00:52:24It didn't move the needle
00:52:27You know unfortunately
00:52:28The show was not popular
00:52:29At the time
00:52:30So it didn't get
00:52:32The positive attention
00:52:33That I think it would have
00:52:35If you know
00:52:36The show had the wind
00:52:37At its back
00:52:43The Coppola episode
00:52:44Was great
00:52:46But there was so much
00:52:47Toothpaste out of the tube
00:52:48On the season
00:52:50That you just couldn't
00:52:51And shove it back in
00:52:52I see a new horizon
00:52:56And life has only begun
00:52:58I mean that
00:52:59It was so experimental
00:53:00And it was so reimagined
00:53:02You can't do that
00:53:03Every week
00:53:04So how'd you like
00:53:05Doing the show?
00:53:07The horror
00:53:08The horror
00:53:10How do you think
00:53:11We feel
00:53:11We're the producers
00:53:23So there had always been
00:53:25Part of the Lorne mystique
00:53:27That he didn't like
00:53:29To fire people
00:53:29It was difficult
00:53:30For him to do that
00:53:32So the last show
00:53:34Of the season
00:53:36Lorne had Damon
00:53:37Come back
00:53:39And do stand up
00:53:40Ladies and gentlemen
00:53:41Damon Wyand
00:53:42Thank you
00:53:45Lauren is a very
00:53:46Forgiving man
00:53:50And I think
00:53:50He just wanted
00:53:51To let me know
00:53:52That he believed in me
00:53:54Your sister's so black
00:53:55Every time she go
00:53:56To night school
00:53:56The teacher's
00:53:57Mark her absent
00:54:04But so much
00:54:05Was going on
00:54:07SNL was
00:54:07On the verge
00:54:09Of being cancelled
00:54:14I think everybody
00:54:15Was just waiting
00:54:16For what the verdict
00:54:17Was going to be
00:54:19You wanted to know
00:54:21What was happening
00:54:21But Lorne was usually
00:54:23Playing it close
00:54:24To the vest
00:54:25There was so much
00:54:26Pressure
00:54:27That it wasn't working
00:54:28They needed to see
00:54:30Some sort of
00:54:31Radical bloodbath
00:54:32You know
00:54:34No
00:54:35I didn't think
00:54:36We were going
00:54:36To be fired
00:54:38We'll get a chance
00:54:39To work this out
00:54:42I just didn't think
00:54:43That we were that bad
00:54:47I mean look
00:54:48There was such doom
00:54:49And gloom
00:54:50At the end
00:54:50To the last episode
00:54:52They decided
00:54:53To do what
00:54:54They're paid to do
00:54:55Which is make fun of it
00:54:56See if we can get
00:54:57Even a laugh out of it
00:55:03Angelica Houston
00:55:04Was hosting the show
00:55:06And Billy Martin
00:55:08The manager of the Yankees
00:55:09Was hosting too
00:55:10Is she the host?
00:55:11I thought you were Billy
00:55:11Well they kind of both are
00:55:13I guess
00:55:15Billy Martin was like
00:55:16This loose cannon
00:55:17Famous baseball manager
00:55:20I mean that's it
00:55:21You can't do live television
00:55:23You've been blowing cues all night
00:55:24You're fired
00:55:25Out of here
00:55:25Good, good
00:55:26So I tied that in
00:55:28With this idea
00:55:29Of a cliffhanger
00:55:30That Billy Martin's
00:55:31Bitter at Lorne Michaels
00:55:32The hell in here
00:55:34And he ends up
00:55:35Setting the studio on fire
00:55:40Hey, hey, hey, hey
00:55:41Good show everybody
00:55:43Nobody knew how bad it was
00:55:46Until the table read
00:55:48Where there was a fire
00:55:51It's hard to believe
00:55:52We're not going to be back here
00:55:53Until next October
00:55:54Wow
00:55:54But in a table read
00:55:56Like nobody has the balls
00:55:59To say fuck
00:56:00I don't know about you guys
00:56:02But I am pumped
00:56:04For next year
00:56:04Yeah
00:56:05Yeah
00:56:05Yeah
00:56:07Dinitra and I went
00:56:08To a huddle
00:56:09And we both
00:56:10She went
00:56:11We're not going to get
00:56:12Out of that fire
00:56:13Alive
00:56:14Hey, hey
00:56:15Does anybody smell gasoline?
00:56:19Nobody was happy
00:56:20With that fire
00:56:22Billy, what are you doing?
00:56:24I'm setting a room on fire
00:56:25That's what I'm doing
00:56:26What do you mean?
00:56:28Lorne played it
00:56:28So perfectly too
00:56:31Bill, are you crazy?
00:56:32If you set the cast on fire
00:56:35They won't be able
00:56:36To come back
00:56:37To the show next year
00:56:41I've got to go in there
00:56:49What are you doing?
00:56:50I've got to wave goodbye
00:56:51Don't ask any questions, John
00:56:52Just go downstairs
00:56:53To my limousine
00:56:53And wait for me there
00:56:56Reuters, Reuters
00:56:57Yes, Reuters
00:56:59There's some candies
00:57:00And chocolates
00:57:01In the dressing room
00:57:01Go on in there
00:57:02Help yourself
00:57:03Oh, God
00:57:03It was misery
00:57:04I remember watching it
00:57:05On a monitor
00:57:06Up on 17
00:57:07I was just kind of like
00:57:08You know, in a blanket
00:57:09Shivering
00:57:11Like a rescue dog
00:57:12Help yourself
00:57:17They had a cannon fired at them
00:57:37Just the very fact
00:57:38That they could do that
00:57:41That's a pretty powerful statement
00:57:43About their insecurity
00:57:44The instability of the show
00:57:47And
00:57:49They might as well have put
00:57:50A question mark
00:57:51Next to the three initials
00:57:53SNL
00:57:55What have we done
00:57:57That's so horrible?
00:57:59You can fire me
00:57:59Do you have to actually
00:58:00Set fire to me?
00:58:05Who was the audience
00:58:06For that sketch?
00:58:08It meant nothing
00:58:09To the audience at home
00:58:10It was
00:58:11It was to the network
00:58:14It was a declaration
00:58:16We had to clean house
00:58:23It was a hard year
00:58:25You know
00:58:25And I
00:58:27I didn't
00:58:28Nobody knew
00:58:29If the show
00:58:29Was going to get picked up
00:58:30You know
00:58:31It was
00:58:32I think up to
00:58:33Brandon Tartikoff
00:58:34President of NBC Entertainment
00:58:39At the end of that season
00:58:42Around April
00:58:42Brandon Tartikoff
00:58:44Who was head of NBC
00:58:45Called me
00:58:46And they never call
00:58:48The manager with good news
00:58:50Brandon
00:58:50Yeah Brandon
00:58:51Brandon told me
00:58:53After 11 years
00:58:55Saturday Night Live
00:58:57Was over
00:58:59There's Nibino next year
00:59:01And you know
00:59:02I didn't argue with him
00:59:03At that time
00:59:04Honest
00:59:05I'd like to say I did
00:59:06But though I knew
00:59:07Everything that was going on
00:59:12I had a kind of
00:59:13Existential
00:59:15Moment
00:59:19Should it exist?
00:59:22Was it worthwhile
00:59:23That it existed?
00:59:26Was it just
00:59:27Habit?
00:59:31Maybe it was time
00:59:35And I told my wife
00:59:36And she said
00:59:37How dare you
00:59:39Let this happen
00:59:43I said
00:59:43What do you mean?
00:59:44She said
00:59:44You can't just
00:59:45Let them do that
00:59:46After 11 years
00:59:47And what Lauren's done
00:59:52Now I'm not married
00:59:53To her anymore
00:59:54But that's the best thing
00:59:55She ever did
00:59:57So I called Brandon back
00:59:59And I said
01:00:00We have to talk
01:00:01You can't cancel it
01:00:02You gotta give Lauren
01:00:03Another year
01:00:06When push came to shove
01:00:09When push came to shove
01:00:10Brandon Tartikoff
01:00:11Decided to give
01:00:12Lauren Michaels
01:00:13Another chance
01:00:14He believed in Lauren
01:00:22To put a finer point on it
01:00:24Season 11 may have been
01:00:25The gut check
01:00:26That NBC needed
01:00:28To realize
01:00:30This thing is bigger
01:00:31Than just
01:00:32A bad episode
01:00:34Or a bad season
01:00:34We can ride it out
01:00:36Thank you
01:00:37And we'll be
01:00:37Right back
01:00:40I knew
01:00:42After having been
01:00:43Beaten up
01:00:44For a year
01:00:46I was completely
01:00:47Determined
01:00:48Now I had something
01:00:49To prove again
01:00:50The only thing
01:00:51That was wrong
01:00:52We had no cast
01:00:53Except for Lovitz
01:00:57I mean they asked me
01:00:58Who do you work
01:00:59Well with
01:01:01I love a set heart
01:01:02Level with me
01:01:04If you're unhappy
01:01:05With my work
01:01:05Tell me now
01:01:06Alright
01:01:06Everyone says
01:01:07You're the worst
01:01:08Doctor in town
01:01:09Don't leave me
01:01:09Hanging by a thread
01:01:10If you're unhappy
01:01:10With my performance
01:01:11Just give it to me
01:01:12Straight
01:01:12Alright you're through
01:01:13Do you hear me through
01:01:14You'll never work
01:01:14In this town again
01:01:15I kept
01:01:16John and Nora
01:01:17Dennis and Whitney
01:01:20Oh no no
01:01:21No need to overreact
01:01:22Please
01:01:22I vouch for Dana
01:01:24This is my impression
01:01:26Of a very pretentious
01:01:27Rock star
01:01:29I think all of us
01:01:30At one time
01:01:31In our lives
01:01:31Wanted to be a rock star
01:01:32The next season
01:01:34Was experienced writers
01:01:37Writing for experienced
01:01:38Sketch performers
01:01:40Dana Carvey
01:01:41And Jan Hooks
01:01:42Jan Hooks
01:01:43Hello
01:01:43Hi
01:01:43These are all time
01:01:45Sketch performers
01:01:47She's cold as ice
01:01:50We started to get people
01:01:53In again
01:01:54Whose one focus
01:01:55Was to be funny
01:01:57Paradise
01:02:00And the feeling
01:02:03Look
01:02:04It's me
01:02:05Can you imagine that
01:02:06Oh who would have thought
01:02:08We're so nice
01:02:11Lauren
01:02:12Pulled it out of the fire again
01:02:16People were doing bits
01:02:18That they had brought
01:02:19To the show
01:02:19Well isn't that special
01:02:23The performers
01:02:26Were completely in the zone
01:02:27And I remember Jim Downey
01:02:32Saying
01:02:32The audience feels safe
01:02:39The cast had arrived
01:02:41That second season
01:02:42Well geez
01:02:43Now there's something
01:02:43I don't hear often
01:02:45There'd been
01:02:46A codification
01:02:48Of a right way
01:02:49And a wrong way
01:02:49To do Saturday Night Live
01:02:50And I think it had
01:02:51To be blown up
01:02:52And the 85 season
01:02:54He allowed it
01:02:54To be blown up
01:02:55Judges
01:02:57And it worked
01:02:59We had one of the best casts
01:03:01We ever had
01:03:01For the next five years
01:03:12But I like to think
01:03:13That the seeds
01:03:15Of that
01:03:16Were sown
01:03:17That year
01:03:18Of going like
01:03:19What are we doing
01:03:20Wrong here
01:03:20And figuring that out
01:03:22And going back
01:03:24Really probably
01:03:24To what the old
01:03:26Show was
01:03:29The imagination
01:03:31In this wondrous landscape
01:03:33Of the mind
01:03:34All things are possible
01:03:36Until we reach
01:03:38The limits
01:03:39Of the imagination
01:03:47Now you've seen how close
01:03:48We came to a world
01:03:49Without Saturday Night Live
01:03:51What we learned
01:03:52In season 11
01:03:53Opened the door
01:03:54To a whole new dimension
01:03:56The one we know today
01:03:57Where SNL endures
01:03:59But it wouldn't have been possible
01:04:01But it wouldn't have been possible
01:04:02The weird year
01:04:03The weird year
01:04:05The weird year
01:04:06Okay
01:04:08Just suspend your imagination
01:04:10For a second
01:04:11As I say
01:04:12Hi
01:04:13I'm Madonna
01:04:15I said Madonna
01:04:16I said Madonna
01:04:18I can get the applause
01:04:21She wanted
01:04:21Thank you
01:04:23It's more like it
01:04:26As you may recall
01:04:27One year ago tonight
01:04:29I hosted the premiere episode
01:04:30Of Saturday Night Live
01:04:31Therefore NBC has asked me
01:04:33To read the following statement
01:04:34Concerning last year's
01:04:36Entire season
01:04:39Are you ready?
01:04:41Ready?
01:04:42Ready?
01:04:43Ready?
01:04:44It was all a dream
01:04:46A horrible
01:04:47Horrible dream
01:04:49Wow
01:04:52Well, it sounds like us
01:05:00It was a great experience
01:05:03For all the wrong reasons
01:05:06Remember, don't hold a grudge
01:05:07A grudge is very heavy
01:05:08It doesn't have a handle
01:05:09Um
01:05:11What is life without lessons?
01:05:13And the lessons bring the blessings

01:05:32Whether you
01:05:32Are any good or not

01:05:38I'm proud to be a part of it
01:05:40It was like out-of-body experience

01:05:45Allowed Lauren to keep going
01:05:47Live from New York
01:05:48It's Saturday
01:05:49Season 11
01:05:50It was like
01:05:51The fuck-up year you needed
01:05:53To get back on track
01:05:56They reached too far
01:05:57For a star
01:05:58That was too far away
01:06:00And got their arms
01:06:01Lopped off
01:06:02But then the arm grew back
01:06:03And then they seized the star
01:06:05The end
01:06:09And now to confuse you even further
01:06:11Live from New York
01:06:13Live from New York
