00:09red wings have been a hot topic today we'll get back into him a little later as well as
00:12kevin mcgonigal great news there he'll make his major league debut tomorrow he made the club
00:17no service time manipulation couldn't even do it if you wanted like can't chris bryant him he
00:23played well on defense and he was great in the spring so we're excited and we'll talk more about
00:27mcgonigal as the show rolls john when i saw brad holmes was doing a long form 50 minute conversation
00:33i figured oh we we have some things to take from it and we do he was on the lions
00:39collective
00:40which features will birchfield from 97 won the ticket uh justin rogers as well as colton pouncey
00:46and um and jeff iefrady so those guys peppered him with questions for 50 minutes and i just want to
00:55start before we play the audio because we have a bunch of audio to play what was your biggest
00:58takeaway we'll get to some of the audio um that led to this but so the things that we've talked
01:08about talking about free agency's done they're going to add a whole bunch of one-year guys they're going
01:15to extend the 23 class and the term sustainable like they don't want to be that team that is is
01:26one one shot at the big dance the super bowl and then bad for a year or two after they
01:34he uses the term
01:35we want to remain sustainable and i get that but my takeaway was
01:45we just we want to remain a playoff team we want to remain in contention but we're never really
01:50going to go for it that was my takeaway yours very similar he used the word financial constraints
01:59from the jump and he repeated it a bunch and then at some point he tried to dive into deeper
02:03of what
02:04that actually means he wanted to stress you know we are spending everything but some of it is on
02:09future extensions we want to keep all these great players and the frustration then is
02:17you're right you're prioritizing the long-term balance sheet more than putting the best football
02:22team out there and you i thought made a great point earlier this offseason with the kansas city chiefs
02:27they also had an embarrassment of riches and so many players and they came to the conclusion
02:31we may have to move on from some of these guys and we're going to get compensated we're going to
02:35get first round picks yeah for these guys because we can't keep everybody they've moved on from a
02:40couple of corners they've moved on from guys that are on the verge of a big time payday and they've
02:49traded them for picks and and sometimes some players to help fill some spots but this is a team that's
02:55won multiple super bowls they've drafted well they've developed but instead of paying
03:01all of them they've they've chosen chris jones kelsey mahomes they've chosen some
03:11to extend and keep their core but not every single one of them this was the text i sent to
03:19birchie
03:19because i when i finished the uh the interview yesterday i gave him some thoughts i said my biggest
03:23gripe i guess is extensions coming before putting the best product on the field
03:28and it's it sounds like it's just a philosophical difference that they want to keep as many of
03:34their draft picks and the best way to do it is to lock them up early to get them at
03:37better deals
03:38but in doing so they have to earmark money they don't spend right now and then call it financial
03:42constraints right and and it's we're talking about the 23 draft and it's it's all four players and he
03:50talks about it where hey we had first round grades on all of them they've all produced well all of
03:58them
03:58that produced in the second round both of them laporta and branch are both hurt and he still included
04:09them in whether it's hey before the draft after the draft sometime in the summer sometime during the
04:16season like they're going to get extensions right and he's even asked about well even with their
04:22injuries and he seems comfortable navigating that and the guys like gibbs and campbell you can pick
04:30up the fifth year option and they're actually two years away from free agency three years with a
04:34franchise tag on a running back if you want to go that route it's a cost saver at the position
04:39the the urgency that we as fans feel is not felt by them or him specifically talking brad holmes i
04:49can't
04:49speak for everybody in the organization but when you publicly are prioritizing those guys extensions
04:54over yeah we could have freed up more money now but then we would be in what was his phrasing
05:01on it
05:03he didn't say it'd be catastrophic but it would make it very difficult for them we
05:08you know what's very difficult is missing the playoffs right not winning playoff games so
05:12you're sustainably not winning right and and he uses the term i think it was reward you remember
05:16here in regards to hey you you know you make the pick or you make the trade which you're at
05:21golf and
05:22you reward your franchise quarterback you reward pen a sewell you reward a mama amon ross st brown
05:29and you know aiden hutchinson and and these guys have earned it well has gibbs earned it
05:35i the answer would be yes and has jack campbell earned it yes but you don't have to reward
05:43all of those guys their reward may not actually come from you they're probably going to get paid
05:51whether it's you or somewhere else but you can actually trade them reward yourself by making a
05:57great pick and then getting some more draft capital and replace and getting cheap really good talent
06:04and they can get rewarded by someone else right it is a business let's play some of this for people
06:12okay so the one-year deals greg let's just start with the one-year deals handed out in free agency
06:18and why they went that route
06:21so
06:26you
06:27so
06:38you
06:39you
06:50you
07:21Can we use that? That's cut four, Greg. It just kind of layers that thought.
07:58Sustainable at a good level.
08:00Hey, just even keel, baby.
08:02Um, that, that's, that's the one quote really that kind of set me off last night is, yeah, do we
08:09always want to have a winner? Sure. But at some point, instead of a sustainably good level, we'd like a
08:17year of great.
08:19I don't get the rewarding and extending guys like Campbell and Gibbs at this point. I just, you have, you
08:26control them for three years if you want. Yes. At least one of them with the tag. Yeah.
08:33Why, why do you have to pay them now? You're going to pay them more later if they continue to
08:37do what they do. Yeah. That's the little downside. That's the risk. The cap is going up. Yeah. But what
08:41if one of them blows out a knee? Right.
08:45Or has a debilitating knee injury that won't, you won't be able to recover from.
08:49And I'm not saying that to put bad juju into their lives. I'm saying it because we've seen it happen.
08:54You, you picked up on it with Kirby Joseph and Aleem McNeil.
08:56Yeah. Yeah. It was pretty one obvious to pick up on. Just, you know, people are weird and they get
09:00defensive about stuff. And the other thing, not on the caliber of those players, but the Deckers and the Montgomery's,
09:06they made sure to rush out and give those guys extensions. Montgomery's extension never even kicked in and he was
09:12traded. So sure. Go ahead and reward the players. What are they going to do? Demand a trade if they
09:17don't get what they want. So it's a business is your word, John. Yeah. So then run it like a
09:21business. And the business, and by the way, the business, just so we're clear on this, is the business of
09:25winning a Super Bowl.
09:27Not the business of sustainably being relevant. You know, it's a little dirty to use the franchise tag. It can
09:33rub players and agents the wrong way, but it was bargained in, in the CBA. Right. To use it. It's
09:41a tool. And it's a strategy to use. Hey, you got to use them. Yeah. We got way more audio.
09:48I mean, it was 50 minutes. I mean, our, we have a sheet of all the different things we can
09:52play for you guys. Let's try to cycle through some of those next. Of course, want your feedback. Open lines.
09:56It's 248-539-9797. We'll get back into Wings Hockey. People want to vent today. I get it. I'm one
10:02of those people. And we'll get to McGonagall too. It's 97.1.
