A priest was injured after a lift malfunction in a residential society in Gurugram, Haryana, triggering panic among residents and raising concerns over maintenance standards.

The incident occurred at Paras Irene Society in Sector 70A, where the lift reportedly dropped suddenly from an upper floor while the priest was inside. CCTV footage from inside the elevator shows the cabin jerking sharply and descending rapidly, causing glass panels inside to shatter.

The priest, who was alone in the lift at the time, sustained injuries to his head and body. After the lift reached the ground floor and doors opened, residents rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Residents alleged that this is not the first such incident in the society. They claimed multiple complaints about lift malfunctions had been raised earlier, but no effective action was taken by the management.

The incident has left residents concerned, with many expressing fear over using the elevators, especially for children and elderly family members.

Experts note that complete free-fall in modern elevators is extremely rare due to built-in safety mechanisms. However, sudden drops or abrupt descents can occur due to technical faults or poor maintenance.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Residents have demanded a thorough inspection of all lifts in the society and strict action against those responsible.
