00:22I can't believe we're about to start the house hunt. You can't believe I've been
00:26looking for five years. So are you excited? How are you feeling about all this? I definitely
00:31didn't think that the dream would come this soon. I thought this was something that we would have to
00:34wait quite a bit longer. I'm excited. I think this is going to be a beautiful new chapter and
00:38I can't wait for it. My name is Heather and I'm Erica. We've been together for two years. We are
00:44looking to buy our first home together on the East Coast. Between the two of us, we have one beautiful
00:49dog and two very needy boy cats. My whole family's from Newfoundland, so the ocean's always been a
00:56very big part of my life. I have a boat that I named after my grandfather who was from Newfoundland
01:00and worked on the ferry that we took every single summer to go visit family there. So I've been
01:04originally from Pictou County, right in Nova Scotia. I grew up surrounded by ocean. That's where all my
01:11greatest memories are. Those feelings have always left me with just such joy and such peace. And now
01:17moving into our adult life together, I want to constantly feel those emotions every time I open the
01:23front door. I found out that I had an issue with my spine a few years ago. I had a
01:28surgery on it and
01:29then I had a flare-up last summer and now I'm basically on a cancellation list for another spinal
01:32surgery. So about three years ago, all out of the blue, I got sick. In the last two years, I've
01:38had
01:38three brain surgeries. Every day is a struggle from just getting out of bed to lights to noise to just
01:46day-to-day living. It was actually almost a positive surprise that we were kind of both in a similar
01:51boat
01:51when it comes to health. That's a big reason why we're seeking that ocean lifestyle, to be able to just
01:56kind of interrupt our process and step outside and just relax and be still.
02:03Our dream would be to have a single-story home, although being near water is more important to us.
02:09I would like it to be at least ocean view, but water access would be great too.
02:13On the first level, it would be nice to have a separate bath and living space for those days where
02:20I just can't make it up to you.
02:22I'd rather not be more than 45 minutes to an hour outside the city. I definitely want to be
02:26close enough that I can get her to the city if there is an emergency. Renovating is something that
02:31I have a huge passion for, so I would like somewhere that I would have space to work on things.
02:36Another thing is just to have a nice-sized yard. We do own a hot tub, so it's important to
02:41have that
02:42space to ensure that it does fit in the yard somewhere. And I'd love to add like a sauna, cold
02:47plunge,
02:47kind of all the pieces to have sort of an all-encompassing spa of our own.
02:52The budget is in the neighbourhood of $600,000. There is some flexibility, but with both of us being
02:57semi-retired, we have to be careful.
03:00The last house I picked on my own, I decorated on my own, and she just kind of came into
03:03it and was stuck with
03:05what I had. So this is going to be nice, I think, to do it together.
03:09Our realtor is Margo. She knows Nova Scotia inside and out, and I think she's the right one to find

03:14exactly what we're looking for. We are in beautiful Blanford, and this is a really popular area.
03:19It has close access to so many beautiful other picturesque beaches nearby. Here you get the peace
03:25and quiet, but you're not far from amenities. We are so ready to buy a house. How are you, Margo?

03:36and I can't wait to show it to you. Today, I'm taking Erica and Heather to see a four-bedroom,
03:40two-bathroom home. There is 1,400 square feet of living space, and it's right on the water with
03:46direct water access just five minutes away, and it's listed at $590,000, just below their budget.
03:54I can see the gutters need some work and maybe some exterior paint, so I'm kind of excited at the
03:58possibility of that. And proximity to the city, what are we looking at? You're looking at just under
04:03an hour. Perfect. Let's go and see what you think. Okay, the view. Oh, wow. Can you imagine just waking
04:13up, drinking our coffee to this view? That could be pretty special, although I will say right off the
04:18bat, it is feeling a little snug in here. I mean, depending on what is on the other side of

04:50I don't love butcher blocks, so that is something I would definitely want to switch right away. I would
04:54like to have some stone in this kitchen. The number one thing on my wish list was a bedroom on

05:01floor. Absolutely. Just right through there. Perfect. Okay. It's really cute. I do find this space a little
05:12bit small. And when I am sick and have my down days and can't make it upstairs, this is a
05:17pretty tight
05:18room to stay in. So I know that the bathroom is important and there's one just next door. Let's go

05:23it out. It's a four-piece, so you get a shower and a tub combo. Oh, this is a great
05:30bathroom.
05:30Wow. No, I like it. My only concern is that it is really bright. We can always soften up the
05:36light
05:37bulbs and frost the glass or whatever. Yeah, that is an easy fix. All right. I'm ready to see upstairs.
05:42Okay, let's go. I'm loving the open stairwell. Yeah, these stairs are great. And you said these
05:49are original. Yes, it looks like something they've originally restored. Yeah, it's beautiful. And is
05:54this the primary? So interestingly, it's not. And the one that is across the hall is the main primary,
06:00but this one is quite large. Let's go to the actual primary bedroom.
06:07So this is the primary. What do you think? Oh, wow, Margot. And you can see the ocean from both
06:13windows.
06:19Both of these bedrooms upstairs are just so big. I wish that bedroom downstairs was just a little
06:24bit bigger, though. Yes, this is very massive for its size, and I can see why they call this the
06:29primary. We could set this up as more of a living space for you, too, with the amount of space
06:33that
06:34we do have. We could always bring up a coffee bar up here for you. We could always, you know,
06:38customize the space to be a little bit more of your living and rest space.
06:41I do love that idea. We could do a lot up here.
06:44I'd love to see that outdoor space and what we can do with it.

18:49So the first house we looked at was Saltwind Cove.

18:53We would have to redo the gutters.

18:56The inside of the property is pretty turnkey.
18:58Like, I can't think of anything inside the house that I would need to change right away to make us
19:02comfortable.
19:03That downstairs bedroom, regardless of it being snug, we could make that work for the days where I'm really not
19:09feeling good.
19:09And having that bathroom right there, it just worked.
19:13Let's talk about Plum Point.
19:14I actually loved that house.
19:16All of the rooms were huge, except the kitchen.
19:19That was odd that the kitchen was so small in comparison to everything else, but everything else was so beautiful,
19:24it's almost hard to pick on the kitchen.
19:26I did love that on that main floor, there was the beautiful bedroom that had the bathroom attached to it.
19:32But then going upstairs, I don't know if I could climb them every single day.
19:36They were steep, and frankly, they were dangerous.
19:39Let's talk pink door.
19:40The pink hideaway.
19:41I loved it.
19:43I thought that had almost everything we could ever ask for.
19:47I did love the cozy wood floors.
19:49Even upstairs, the, like, differing wood floor was still really interesting.
19:52It only had one bathroom.
19:54Having to come down every single night to use the bathroom, that's not ideal.
19:59This was the only one with true water access.
20:01It was almost like this.
20:02I could just walk out, step in the boat, and take off, and that's been my biggest dream in this
20:06process.
20:07I think I know what house I want to start our healing journey in.
20:10And I think I know what house I want to spend our slow Sundays into.
20:19We bought our first home together.
20:21And we chose Salt Lake Cove.
20:22We are so excited to be here.
20:25As soon as we walked in the front door and we saw what we were working with, we knew right
20:29away it was the home for us.
20:30The house was listed for $590,000.
20:33We hit a counter offer really quickly of $580,000 and ended up settling at $585,000.
20:38And we had money allocated to the side for the Nordic Spa, which we were able to put together.
20:42It's been really special and wonderful to be able to throw that robe on and step outside and have the
20:46full spa experience right at our fingertips.
20:50When we open our front door, we don't hear sirens.
20:53We hear the sound of the ocean.
20:54This is our first house that we've ever bought together, and it will be our last.
20:59We plan on spending the rest of our lives here.
21:02We can't wait for in 50 years' time to be walking down that beach and still finding sea glass.
