00:33with half that doesn't seem fair that's non-negotiable this is such a great start
00:38to transform your home and let the joy back in i'm speechless wow oh my that is going to change
00:50our lives it's the best feeling in the world oh mission accomplished
00:54all right come on you back to work oh it's good to be back eh yes it is man i'm
01:07so excited for
01:08this and starting in scotland i know right

01:46this is jerry and trish's house they've got three adult children two of which still live at home
01:51and one's just around the corner jerry had to retire for health reasons but trish and the kids
01:56all work shift work and keeping on top of the clutter is impossible that's where we come in
02:02good to go ready ready should we get in there yeah let's not waste any time the king's family home
02:08has four bedrooms an open plan kitchen diner and a living room oh i can see toilet roll i can
02:15see
02:15cat food there's a dryer down here utility slash hallway excuse the mess the children are making
02:21memories oh yeah yeah maybe on the kids wow okay okay it's busy in here oh look at the family
02:30photos
02:31oh this is full it feels like this counter here is just where they come in and chuck
02:37whatever there is a lot of post and letters there's so many little trinkets emma's hen do
02:44lots of knickknacks my favorite oh you'll love this delay it's the teacup with stones in it
02:48was there a plant in there there used to be it's dead now why they're so sentimental look at this
02:54the family tree oh at least all the pens are in the pen box i'm just putting them the right
02:58way
02:58around um there's a lot of arts and crafts around here more than just arts and crafts this is an
03:03artist look at this oh god i just organized those rob we've only been back together for 10 minutes
03:11bickering already guys come on sorry dill come on let's keep going gang
03:15the kitchen diner is joined to a living area toys down here i think there's some babysitting
03:21happening in this house oh my god look gerald king is that him they're the kings yeah this is his
03:27oh
03:28wow it's got like poems in it and stuff he's a poet i do feel like you can tell already
03:32they're a
03:32really warm family there's just yeah a lot going on boy i'm feeling this there's a diy in the building
03:39right day one people don't lose the energy now right rob and ewan check out the rest of the
03:45ground floor oh bedroom bedroom down here this is rather organized this room okay we've got some
03:52emergency gravy under the bed that's always handy emergency gravy i'm here for this guy i know
03:58right i'm liking this room but upstairs the master bedroom is less of a sanctuary okay okay oh god
04:07this feels a bit like a storage room with a bed in the middle this is a memory box this
04:14is the box
04:15you put it in look memories but the memories are in this box these are more trinkets oh i mean
04:21what
04:21are you doing you're getting out of bed and thinking right let's fix that wall finally why is
04:26there a mallet in the bedroom downstairs ewan and rob are finding more signs of home improvement in
04:32progress some diy has definitely gone on here you wouldn't normally have plumbing for a washing machine
04:37right here in the house this looks like a project that was not quite finished yeah there's cupboards
04:41beyond this but you're not going to get to them with the dryer being here you have to do this
04:45oh ewan
04:46i don't want to lose you can you just lower me down a bit further not too far i've got
04:53you look oh
04:54these are some oh photos hold my leg you and you're not light you know oh well this is definitely
05:00the
05:01daughter's room isn't it back upstairs there's signs of some diy success i like the shelves that
05:08looks organized to me but then this is a bit of a situation under ear dilly yeah i mean if
05:14this is not
05:15the sign of a 20 year old rosé in your room half bottle jeepers creepers outside there's a pleasant
05:22surprise everything that should be in a shed is in the shed this is one of the first times we've
05:27seen
05:27a shed that it's actually being used as a shed well that was interesting wow no matter how much stuff
05:33is in there there is so much love in that house their little trinkets their memories their photos it's
05:39just a shame when they're put next to the paint rollers and the there's a lot of takes the lovey
05:44dovin us out next to each other yeah there is literally not one system anywhere is there yeah
05:49oh well we've got our work cut out first game oh yes oh oh i'm hearing voices
05:53yay
05:58hi family hi hi hi we've been sneaking around the house having a little look who's the diy-er
06:06mum your tools are everywhere everywhere you see these beautiful like photo albums and then a mallet
06:11yeah i actually wondered where that was under your bed excellent
06:15so usually we would ask that you let go of at least 50 percent of everything that's in the house
06:21bye bye bye bye perfect see you later hi hello trish and jerry have been married for almost 30 years
06:33despite an unlikely start when i first met trish she didn't like me i was a bony boulder and a
06:42bouncer
06:42and a kissy dram he had nothing on apart from a like a leopard print thong i think he would
06:52describe
06:52it he completely loved himself and i thought yeah you're not really for me
07:00he kind of chased me back and forth for a wee while and he's a nice guy
07:05he made me laugh
07:07yeah yeah gerald is really fun and vibrant
07:13originally my favorite dream was to be a pop star i played in a number of bands when i was
07:17younger but
07:17that just wasn't going to happen so i was always good at drawing and i wanted to be a cartoonist
07:22he loves art he loves to draw trish is very kind and generous we're stronger together there you go
07:31the couple still live in their very first home where they brought up their free now adult children
07:37growing up we never had very much but we never really noticed because my mum and my dad would give
07:44you the last pound out of their pocket if they could when the kids were young we couldn't really
07:51afford much so we used to apply for the son's nine pound fifty holidays uh and it was like caravan
07:57holidays all over the uk the way we raised our kids uh it wasn't about uh spending money it was
08:03about spending time with them and making sure that they had uh the best life like that we could give
08:07them like two of their three kids still live at home but it's more than four fully grown adults
08:12fill in the house ma'am why is there a screwdriver set in the bedroom's room so many people come
08:20in
08:20and out of the house and they all leave things and the cupboards get fuller and fuller until eventually
08:25you've got no cupboard space to put it in for god's sake i always used to think that trish was
08:31the
08:31messiest because even when we first met you'd see a trail of clothes from the front door to the bedroom
08:37but i think nowadays it's me that's that's the messiest one managing their full house has become
08:44harder since a life-changing diagnosis at the beginning i thought it was just getting older
08:48you tend to forget things yeah i had to to check him really into going to the doctors because he
08:54wouldn't accept that there was anything wrong at the age of 55 after 18 months of poking and prodding
09:00i was diagnosed with young onset alzheimer's disease within weeks of the diagnosis i was retired
09:08through ill health i also had to hand in my driving license and that was a huge loss that's all
09:14my
09:14independence gone at the age that he was never expected it's going to be dementia kieran you seen
09:21the tv remote he picks things up and he puts things and we're not allowed to move anything where would
09:26you have put it i know what everything is well i maybe don't remember a few hours later right but
09:33yeah or the bin i'm not bin raking oh we banter a lot yeah about you forgetting stuff and i
09:40i think
09:40that's what uh helps everybody cope it's my choice this time you play rubbish you play rubbish the house
09:47has always been yeah full of laughter full of laughter and full of life and full of love
09:54i just need the house to be more organized and safer for gerald this is the time to do it
10:00because i think if we were doing it any later he wouldn't be able to cope with any change
10:08right we know that this process is a really important one so you don't have to let go of half
10:15the kids but definitely half the clutter do you feel ready for that yes absolutely let's just get on
10:20with it ready come on we've got 12 hours to completely empty the king's home you've got packing
10:30to do yeah boy let's do this and i'm helping trish pack up hers and jerry's memory filled bedroom oh
10:37trish are you excited to do this i am are you excited yeah how do you relax in here trish
10:42i don't relax
10:44much at all so you're are you a nurse no i am our care worker what are your shifts usually
10:49like i do
10:50day shifts and back shifts oh blimey yeah trish there is so much sentimental stuff i keep packing
10:56away you have kids and you sort of try and keep on top of everything and then since his diagnosis
11:02i don't know what to throw out because i don't know what he's going to need to prompt a memory
11:07we
11:07won't let go of anything that you feel is gonna bring happiness to gerald as things progress although
11:13to be fair probably we do need to be forced that's her job that's where she comes in let's go
11:20in here
11:20and pack up this room we've taken as much advice as possible from experts because with jerry's diagnosis
11:28we know that he might struggle to make decisions really quickly so we're just going to go at his
11:34pace we're going to follow his lead and just be completely led by him oh so you sit there i'm
11:40going to start putting in all the arts and crafts he's got the most incredible support from trish the
11:45kids so i feel like together we are going to get this done when do you think you last sat
11:49at the
11:49table together a good maybe a couple of years how have you found living in the house as it is
11:54been quite difficult actually yeah because my dementia affects my visual awareness i can't judge
11:59distances and there's so much junk i've fallen over a few times okay i do attempt to try and make
12:05tea
12:05yeah but the last attempt was a coffee chicken casserole what is coffee chicken casserole instead of using
12:12gravy granules i use coffee granules and i didn't realize until i've actually i was actually serving it
12:17up oh my gosh disgusting oh bless you i have now been living with dementia for
12:26seven years unfortunately probably over the last year or so it's uh things are starting to progress
12:30it's not just my memory it's all my abilities i've lost or i'm losing if any was even done uh
12:37in in
12:37in the house or the garden it was me that would do it any hand for heavy lifting that would
12:40be right in
12:41there uh no problems whatsoever now i'm lucky if i can lift a knife and fork again it's it's been
12:48very
12:49frustrating and what is this big bit of wood it's my piece of wood it's your piece of wood yes
12:54i always
12:55wanted a bit like a like a big chopping board just needs a good clean doesn't it i think so
12:59yeah don't
13:00tell trish that because she's going to get thrown out so what have you done to the house since you
13:06got
13:06here i built these shelves and things gerald just to do a lot of it he can't now so i
13:12kind of started
13:13taken over and find i really really enjoyed it what does life look like now for jerry with his
13:19dementia he's getting worse and he needs a peaceful house you know his brain can't shut off because
13:26there's so much stuff it's like sensory overload yeah it's just everywhere the clutter in the house
13:32really upsets me and i think the diy is my way of trying to make it better clearly it does
13:40not make
13:40it better just gives us more places to hide things until it doesn't oh my lord i hate that
13:48it's got like this and i hate that i've let it get like this this is all down to me
13:52this is my fault
13:54i should be able to have a nice house
13:59it shouldn't it shouldn't be hard i just need to do better i just feel like a failure you're not
14:07a failure to be fair no i i am this is not failing this is a really difficult situation
14:13to manage on an emotional level let alone a physical level you're still working as a carer
14:19caring for your grandkids your children caring for your husband then coming home and trying to do all
14:23your diy and feeling at that no i'm not failing look at your wardrobe look at the wardrobe you're
14:29smashing it we can't just go in all guns blazing and say you don't need that you don't need that
14:34let
14:34it go because there'll be sentimental items in this house that trish and the kids think will
14:41trigger memories for jerry in the future thank you and we're just going to try and lean into what jerry
14:48thinks is going to help him moving forward an anti-fatigue daily moisture just in case you was like
14:55you never know you might get fatigued such a hard-working person that i am halfway through and
15:00this family are flying we're getting through it that's what i like to see come on i forgot how easy
15:05it is to pack up a house when you're dealing with five adults i think this is pajamas i've seen
15:11pink
15:12it's no mine hopefully no breakables are in there they know that this is essential otherwise dad's not
15:20going to be able to manage in this situation so they're just cracking on right come on set let's do
15:26it
15:27do you love living at home yeah i absolutely love living at home like it's just so joyful
15:33i honestly regret moving out i don't think i'll be moving out anytime soon anyway just with like
15:38helping with mom and helping with dad and oh yeah and like it makes me happy knowing that i can
15:44be there
15:44to help them the worst that my dad's obviously getting the more challenging it is for my mum i'd rather
15:51make things easier for her i've got a responsibility of being here and helping out
16:00because at the end of the day he's looked after me growing up for my life now it's my turn
16:05to do
16:05it for him and i would never not do that do you have your friends in that over not very
16:12often obviously
16:13with the more clutter and because obviously i don't go out as much anymore to look after my dad it
16:18would
16:18be nicer to have people come over yeah you just feel like you can't no just yeah it's a bit
16:25too much
16:25sometimes i think hey put that with the um umbilical cords no it's not it's a sandwich bag the clamp
16:33it's a belly button clamp it's not you're holding one of her kids belly buttons stop it stop it
16:38catch oh you're just an hour left to get every single item out of the house
16:44i look at the stuff in the van i don't think i can reach oh there they go thank you
16:53thank you
16:57oh my god what an echo oh my god it looks huge i could actually cook where's my block of
17:06wood oh no
17:09my block of wood what we said how are you feeling i am nervous you're nervous yeah i've got nervous
17:19belly mainly than a nervous poo yeah stephanie hi hello this is the scottish summer i was expecting
17:29hello hi sorry do you know what let's save the hugs for inside i am really excited are you yeah
17:36this is like the moment of choice now here we go oh my god how does that all fit in
17:45the house
17:46welcome home out of the 350 boxes unpacked from the king's home we counted 1 296 greetings cards
17:58762 knick-knacks and 106 electronic instruction manuals
18:06why do you think you have held on to so many things memory stuff i think is hard for me
18:13and
18:13more recently i struggle to know what to get rid of because i don't want gerald to lose that memory
18:19we don't want you to feel like you're losing in fact what we want to do is bring you back
18:23yeah your life and bring you back space and time which are more important than the stuff
18:28i mean you had a something like 762 trinkets like um 33 of which were pigs oh yeah yeah
18:37that's cute yeah i collect because they were cute right do you all feel prepared do you all feel
18:44ready yeah absolutely yes to the kitchen let's go let's go let's go we counted 112 random items on
18:54the king's kitchen island so i'm kicking off the salt in the heart of this family's home
19:01this is your kitchen island none of this belongs on a kitchen island absolutely so anything you
19:09want to keep you've got to try and find the sections it lives in and then let go of the
19:13rest
19:13yeah well that's broken so that can get put in the band do you want to fix that what with
19:17a bit of
19:18tape that is effects but yeah that can go in the band oh is this like from that was from
19:23the
19:23wedding so you're keeping this yeah this weird flower pot my mom and dad brought me that back
19:28from their holiday children's stories yeah that was mums and dads and we use that to be to the kids
19:33at night these oh my god you found it that was a christmas present from my dad and i couldn't
19:39find it
19:40it was right in front of you mum keeps hold of everything i mean she's got stuff from our birth
19:47old photos old bears just stored in boxes in the attic and under the stairs she's got teeth hair
19:54yeah some of the stuff that she's kept is wild wild she's one of those people that take their placenta
20:01what was the dream for your kitchen island it would be completely empty yeah and we could chat and
20:07have cups of tea and that was did that ever happen never once oh because he put that big old
20:12solid
20:14disgusting block the wood at it so nobody would it's ginormous repulsive i'm pretty sure that
20:21can go every now and again i sand it down because it's moldy i just thought it looked fantastic on
20:26the end of the the the kitchen bunker but that's been the bane of my life since it went up
20:30there
20:30it's all moldy yeah yeah thank you for okay it can go
20:35yeah we need to get a move on so while the kids sort through the perishables i suppose i can
20:44let go
20:44of my wine i need jerry and trish to get cracking with the crockery there's over 50 mugs here i
20:50think
20:51we can definitely reduce it down to 16. right let's go so if we keep the ones i think you
20:57should keep
20:57the set i'm gonna keep them for soup i think so how many is that three six mom what are
21:04you keeping
21:04these so we use them a lot eh they're nice ones i think they're all finding it more difficult than
21:11they've all especially trish keep that one i think jerry's nervous about letting something go and then
21:17forgotten he's letting it go but if jerry wants to bring something home it comes home they can definitely
21:23go but i think he's actually quite ruthless that one can go this one trish she is very sentimental
21:30and nervous to let go of absolutely everything even if jerry's like i don't even know what that is
21:36stacy yeah if something's like a soup bowl rather than a mug all right so get rid of some of
21:43the regular
21:44mugs and keep your soup mugs that doesn't seem fair are you finding this super goal i am that's
21:49ridiculous it's not ridiculous just tell me why so my friend gave me that but you never drink out
21:55of it no you need to have a space in your house so that you can have exactly one day
22:00that'll happen
22:01if you can let go of enough yeah you will have space yeah this is from edinburgh christmas market
22:07are you keeping that one no oh well done right that could go out because nobody uses that right that
22:14can go away edinburgh science festivals that can go that could go out yeah this has been a long time
22:22coming actually yeah that's all chipped you get the other one then dan well done aye well go on muscles
22:29right let's go down to the piles guys jerry don't forget your wood slab oh my wood yeah
22:36do you reckon we sell this or donate it do you think someone else don't think i don't think anybody's
22:42going to be grateful for that no i know hello in the king's kitchen the team have plans to keep
22:51the space permanently clear jerry said it's everything is a trip hazard yeah it needs some really clever
22:58storage so that all of those arts and crafts things can go away did you just say craft are you
23:03feeling
23:04all right this morning i know maybe it's a song yeah i think you've got sunstroke i just love jerry
23:09and
23:10he loves crafts so i'm all about just giving him storage what i'm thinking is to build a massive
23:16storage unit but incorporating joey's artwork how you know sliding screen yeah well how about
23:22this whole sliding piece be the area for his artwork oh nice oh nice okay and that there will keep
23:29this
23:29entire space neat and tidy lovely that's what we want with four days to pull off his big build rob
23:36straight on the tools so i'm making the first part to the living room unit the base just like when
23:45you're building a house if your foundation isn't right then everything else in the house is going to
23:50be off once all my screws are in i'll be able to take it inside and fit it oh boy
24:04i'd like to see you just doing some work thank you very much it's mid-morning at the warehouse and
24:09amateur artist jerry has a job to do in the stationary section how many pins do we need just a
24:16couple
24:16really three brand new packs of pencils which one do you prefer we'll keep that one when did you get
24:21into art uh primary school yeah i wanted to be a cartoonist actually when i left so is that how
24:26you ended up in architecture yeah because it was still something to do with drawing again which is
24:30what i loved oh i love that so you've got to turn your passion into your job yeah so have
24:34you drawn
24:35everything here i have yes yeah wow this itself is a um with a group and we write all our
24:41own original
24:42soundtracks oh yeah yeah and we've got two albums out just now and that's a cover you're incredible
24:47cherry not at all yeah you are do you want to keep any of these i don't even know where
24:52that's
24:52come from to be honest and that's the sad thing is uh you don't remember half the stuff what was
24:56it
24:57like when you first found out about having alzheimer's like most people you think that uh that uh
25:02alzheimer's is an old person's disease you don't think that people that young can be affected by it
25:09but i've met people in their 40s when you first got told it was alzheimer's what did that feel like
25:14i was all right i think but the world totally changed yeah i had to retire from work i had
25:22to
25:22surrender my driving license your whole life just changed overnight like that but i got into poetry
25:27through the dementia it's my thoughts and my hopes some dreams it's also my medication it lets me put
25:33down on paper how i feel about my dementia and what it feels like to live with dementia and now
25:37that's
25:37another form of therapy yeah that's what i find here yep i think it's very important to be involved
25:42in things like art poetry writing things that it keeps my brain stimulated i'm convinced it slows down
25:51the progress of the alzheimer's i enjoy my heart i would love to leave that as a kind of a
25:57legacy
25:59for my wife and my children so they can remember me for for who i was not who i'm going
26:06to be
26:08what's this one this is the poem that i wrote for trish has trish ever heard it no you should
26:13tell
26:14her it babes yes want to come over a minute oh okay uh this is a wee poem i've had
26:19a wee time to have a
26:20look at it so i've uh oh lord it's so romantic i cup your heart as if my own to
26:29carry you wherever i go
26:31there's no place i'd rather be than here with you just with me oh unfold your wings my angel on
26:38earth
26:39embrace me with the warmth of your love my own sweet angel sent from high to comfort me when i
26:45stumble
26:45and cry anything oh that's lovely it was beautiful yeah it can be a little romantic sometimes i think
26:56and it's it's special because he writes these things down but he doesn't say them so we find out more
27:06about how he's feeling about things when we read his poems than we ever do with him telling us how
27:14he's
27:14feeling about things so it is it's really it's really special pad looks like it's a seen better
27:18day okay so they can go and then i think jerry yes we're there we're done thank you the team
27:28a
27:28mid-bedroom swap at the kings and the biggest room is now up for grabs steph's long-term plans are
27:34to
27:34look after dad okay so i feel like we need to give her the biggest space she's in her 20s
27:39you know she
27:39wants to have pre-drinks here she wants her parties we could almost give her two space in here it
27:43could
27:43be sort of bedroom and then something a bit more entertainment vibes i'm excited for this room
27:47i can't wait to have a little toast with her at the end of it with a bottle of rosette
27:51oh i'm sure
27:52you're ready for that this is gonna be a fab pad trish trish come on come on trish trish trish
28:03in the memorabilia section do you want any of your birthday cards no no that was amazing while
28:09it's proving easy to let go of some family heirlooms steph do you want your umbilical
28:14cord clear absolutely not get rid of that somebody's tooth in there you want it no it's fine others
28:20are prompting more treasured memories anniversary cards maybe we'd keep one or two and just what do
28:25you do for your anniversary i'll sing to it every year what do you sing darling happy anniversary
28:33another year of love has gone by i think i'll know when he doesn't sing that that i've lost him
28:40oh
28:41that'll be when i know he's gone gerald is the most amazing husband he's not perfect neither am i and
28:51i
29:01i mean you just never know with dementia i mean he could wake up tomorrow and not know who we
29:08are
29:09you just don't know and i i feel sad i think sad for him and sad for me but sad
29:19for him
29:20do these help you jerry like if you look at these do they trigger a memory or not really actually
29:26i don't feel
29:27like i used to feel yeah it's just the outside was taking bits and pieces away like again so yeah
29:32but is it helpful to have these things around i like the photo albums i'll keep them
29:38i married trish for trish i didn't marry trish so she could become my care uh we're still really close
29:44but romance wise it's probably there isn't much there like because um the dementia has taken my
29:50feelings away i try to be as supportive as i can with trisha and with my children so that part
30:00of
30:00me hasn't gone yet like which is great hi baby hey i was uh always quite an extrovert got on
30:07really
30:07well with people uh and that's going to be changing sometime in the future uh and i'll be unrecognizable
30:14as a person the guy that she married was um hot to trot like yeah we were young and uh
30:22i'm not the
30:23same man trish married that's for sure who's that that's kieran is it yeah you need to have these
30:33accessible yeah oh god i was not ready for that i can't even look at it i'm never gonna get
30:44you
30:44out with suspenders on my head now speeding through the third and final section of the day
30:51you don't need all these drill bits and sets no you only need one pair of pliers yeah we're knocking
30:58trish's diy section on the head maybe all the manuals can go yeah and racing towards the finish
31:03line we have got 15 minutes till they shut the doors on this warehouse i feel like we really need
31:10to get as much in those piles as possible let's do it let's go go go go go come on
31:18come on some of
31:21the teddy bears definitely that was from when um get ready right two minutes family jerry i think
31:33that can go as well yes go go go go come on girls last chance everyone to the pile to
31:43the pile
31:44oh god day one in the warehouse is done i really enjoyed today i think they all know the importance
31:55of doing this process right now and it has to be done we have to get back to that house
32:00with 50
32:01less if we can and change their lives
32:09day two in the warehouse and while the king family are in full clear out mode
32:15i've been in my tissues for because you've got loads dilly's entered the building good morning
32:22everybody oh no run and she is not mucking about first of all we are going to start with clothes
32:30everyone has too many clothes now you only had about a meter each of hanging so this is what
32:38you've got right to hang your clothes on okay at least try and get it god loves a trier god
32:45loves a
32:45trier god loves a trier keep keep that that's just that one yeah i'll keep that because i wear it
32:54as a
32:54jammy top yeah i've got my benadorm top yeah will we keep in the benadorm top i do love it
33:00if you
33:00love it then it stays we're going again this year so are you oh my gosh it was that good
33:05yeah it's
33:06amazing i've never actually wore them ever oh why i don't really like them on so why didn't you return
33:13them i'm a bargain hunter when it comes to all this stuff so i'll buy all in the sales and
33:17then i put
33:17them on my vintage you need to get in the habit of trying to sell it while it's still got
33:21you know newer tags was this sequin number staying or going well that was my 21st birthday dress
33:26okay but i would get rid of it you're not going to wear it i won't wear it again okay
33:30right donate
33:31that can donate donate don't like them is this your rail this is my real yes i mean look at
33:38this
33:38that is a jacket isn't it and a half i bought that for stephanie's 21st better pockets
33:45you don't think it fits me yeah i'll tell you what we'll go with this my winkle pickers we know
33:50i love
33:50a bit of leopard they're brilliant aren't they i feel like the penguins oh my god i can't even walk
34:00properly in them dilly might be larking about but at the kings it's all work and no play with the
34:08living room build here's the first section of the big mega unit in order to make sure i get these
34:15all
34:15lined up top nice and flush i'm clamping them up and once i have this base all screwed into position
34:23level all off beautifully that's when i can then build up and ewan is tackling a pet peeve
34:31if you haven't got any household lubricant which is the best thing to use for your hinges the alternative
34:36is to use some cooking oil so i've got some olive oil here and i'm using this little pipette and
34:42what
34:42we're going to do is give the hinge a quick wipe just to remove any dust and then we want
34:48to get
34:49this oil into the hinge so we can slowly move it as we drop some of the oil into the
34:58moving parts
34:59and give it a little wiggle and there we go the squeaking has gone
35:08at the warehouse the penguins vanished and dilly is back there is a lot of fun happening in this
35:14warehouse and not enough sorting ready to rattle through jerry's records how often do you listen
35:20to those never we don't have a record player i'll be quite happy to donate them if you sold them
35:24all
35:25as a collection the money you get from that you might be able to put to charity yeah that'd be
35:29good
35:29good and turn our attention to trish's knickknacks one of the things that i sometimes make me a little
35:35bit itchy the amount of trinkets that people have in their house and i think you had 762 trinkets
35:44i mean what is this that's elvis elvis the pig got that one when i was pregnant so these pigs
35:50are
35:50staying yep do we need a benedorm boat that could go for sure what about these for me they all
35:57have a
35:57memory behind them okay what's the memories gerald's bought me them on anniversaries that was
36:01when stephanie was born that was when we had both of the boys i think my mum bought me that
36:07one so i
36:08would like to keep some that one can go that one i'd like to keep because i quite like that
36:13one this
36:14one's staying yeah i don't know if i'm keeping it because i'm just being sentimental or what do you
36:18feel when you look at that peaceful like it reminds me of us two hugging and he doesn't really hug
36:24me
36:24very much so now really do you miss that yeah he does sometimes but it's you know he doesn't and
36:31do you think that's because of his illness yeah before that he was really tactile and you know
36:36we would sit together and he'd cuddle me in but now it's kind of a forced thing i'll give you
36:42a hug
36:45they say that dementia is like christmas lights you know when you bring your christmas lights out of
36:49the box so you never know which lights are going to be on i miss gerald's affection most he used
36:57to
36:57be like cuddly and he doesn't really reach for my hand anymore he's lost that okay yeah okay yeah good
37:07a thousand losses when you're a partner of somebody with dementia we lose him in a different way
37:18every day it's a lot to get used to isn't it i know but i've had years to get used
37:23to it so i know
37:24but still it's also that reminder isn't it that things have changed yeah because you change every
37:28day so and how are you coping with that you just do yeah you just you just have to you
37:34don't really
37:34have a choice so long as he's happy then that's fine because he's the one that's living with it
37:40yeah you've got a good good support network around you i have a a group of my people good well
37:46it's
37:47important so with that i feel like we should keep that that's a good one yeah we'll keep those we'll
37:55reduce the other little bits okay life's changed for trish the guy that she married is now changing
38:00and so i think that must be impossibly hard and those conversations stem from what you may deem as a
38:05silly little ornament you have to make sure that we're keeping the things that do mean something
38:09but yes we're letting go of the elvis the pig for example do we definitely need all these candles
38:14they can go right ma'am what's a tornado scrub it could go out it's rubbish that can go that
38:21can go
38:22that can go i've never used them for years a ceramic and induction hob hygienizer i don't even know that
38:31it's the other final five minutes this is your last chance to go through this whole warehouse that's
38:40an old one well do you need it no not really that can go that can go yes let's go
38:52i need to get back to the gem
38:58that's it well done oh i'm good go go go go last 30 seconds
39:04what let's go let's get it on the piles quickly great are you well done good job well done
39:17after two long days at the warehouse the family have managed to reduce a massive two-thirds of their
39:23belongings well done well done yeah it is 9am and we need to get the king's possessions back in the
39:42house this is looking good isn't it i had such a good warehouse day you really do appreciate adult
39:51children extra muscle we're at such a crucial time in this family's life yeah that we have got to get
39:57this right right let's do this come on rob your tools are everywhere yeah well because i'm still
40:03working on first up rob's in the entranceway reconfiguring the family's utility yes this is an
40:10unconventional place for a utility room but jerry needed an accessible toilet so they had to move
40:17the utility room from that side out here but you really couldn't store much yeah i think the one
40:22thing i need to do is strengthen this up because of this age all of this has come a bit
40:27loose so just
40:28reinforcing it before i go and put everything back
40:34just like that it's back in place simple upstairs i'm bringing some bling to steph's new long-term
40:41lodgings this little alcove to me screams bar stepping up fun with her friends up here and get ready to
40:49go
40:50out one last finishing touch these are just really simple cheap led strips it's as bright as a benedon
40:57strip i reckon remove the bit of sticky back and then i'm just gonna go and follow the alcove ready
41:08benedon time baby downstairs ewan's got a bright idea jerry's told me that with his alzheimer's he can
41:17struggle with his spatial awareness and now that we've moved the bedroom down to the ground floor
41:22here there's the bathroom that he'll have access to just across the corridor so i've picked up some of
41:28these motion activated lights they have a little magnet that's peel and stick so i'm going to pop the
41:34magnet on like this and then this will come on automatically to help jerry find his way to the
41:40toilet in the evening time outside rob's got an artistic take for his living room unit this panel
41:48is the bit of the pièce de résistance not only is it the sliding panel that hides everything but it
41:55also
41:56doubles as a display for one of jerry's amazing bits of artwork i'm having to stick two pieces together
42:01because they just don't make sheets that wide to keep steph's close shopping passion in check
42:08dilly's creating a clever sorting system what i thought is i'll grab one of these drawstring bags
42:14and leave that by the front door so steph reminds herself every time she walks out the door she's got
42:20to return those things you know when you buy something if it doesn't fit return it if you don't
42:25like it return it but as well as having that drop bag what you need is a clear plastic file
42:30to keep our
42:31receipts in it's always worth taking a quick snap of it just in case you lose that snap it before
42:36we
42:36stash it the family let go of so much in the warehouse that i got soft and i fished out
42:43a
42:43beloved item from the donate pile i rescued jerry's wood from the pile because he loved it so much
42:50instead of being a useless training board i'm going to turn this into a letter ledge and jerry can forever
42:57keep his random piece of wood it's a little bit too rustic for my liking at the moment so i'm
43:03gonna
43:04sand it down because then i can get all the like tea stains and really deep marks off now i've
43:11got
43:11these little file holders that i'm gonna attach them to the underside of this shelf and the letters will
43:17go inside you either file it because it's an important document shred it because it's a piece of junk or
43:26action it okay you ready for this file it shred it action it in this family they've got as many
43:38pets
43:38as they have humans so i want to differentiate their sponges and a really simple way you can do this
43:46is to cut your sponges into different shapes there we go you need to trim a bit off we have
43:52bone for
43:53the dog's bowl fish for the cat's bowl regular rectangles for human bowls it's good isn't it
44:01what are you doing i'm cutting these sponges into shapes don't look at me like that mate you have got
44:08way too much time on your hand this is i'm sure i'm sure we need to prioritize the fur babies
44:13i can't
44:14entertain this this guy do you like it meow
44:20i am creating these lovely little labels that i'm gonna put on every single cupboard every single
44:27container i've put a bit of a stripe border around this because i just think it highlights a little bit
44:32more and hopefully that will help jerry oh god i'm putting less on the end come to this box for
44:37some
44:38spice outside i'm organizing a unique retreat for trish when most people think sanctuary they think spa
44:46but when i was talking to trish she told me when she does diy she finds it really relaxing really
44:53therapeutic so i thought that's it we need to make a diy den pig balls come with little attachments
45:00that you can add to the holes inside the board and then you have got a tub for all your
45:07spanners
45:08somewhere to hang your hammer i'm gonna cover the walls in these so i can hang all of trish's
45:14tools up and she can get to them anytime she needs
45:19oh there you are and where's stacy stacy come on come i feel like i haven't seen any of you
45:27all day
45:27because i've just had my head down trying to get stuff done so i have just been to pick up
45:31some
45:32photos which i had printed oh these are photos with jerry oh cute and i thought we could do a
45:38little
45:39scrapbook oh god i did not picture you as a scrapbook girl dilly that's because i'm not so there you
45:45go
45:45you're not gonna be that joke why can't you make the scrapbook you've done so well you're ahead we're
45:51ahead for now but this is the time of day when we relax into it and we start slowing down
45:56we cannot
45:57lose the pace yes i'll do your scrapbook am i happy about it no right hurry up keep up the
46:02pace let's go
46:06she tasked me with it like it's a piece of cake and it's not i want it to be in
46:11order i want to label
46:12them a scrapbook is something you spend years making jerry told dilly that photos really helping
46:19with his memory so hopefully he'll always remember this process oh look at that i mean it's not my
46:25best work but i'm giving it a good guy they're gonna love this all these memories i love this family
46:30i love this family too with the living room unit fully constructed i'm just fitting the track system
46:40for the sliding artwork that's going to run across the face of this unit and a super-sized replica of
46:46jerry's poem painted and dried a piece of artwork that's on this sliding panel is inspired by jerry's
46:52artwork rob's vision is sliding into place this is the part of the build i was most worried about yes
46:59you've got tons of storage out here but this here is what makes this unit unique i'm proud of this
47:08whoo next door i'm sorting the lighting in the brand new master bedroom trish and jerry really
47:15wanted to move to the downstairs room where daniel was but they'd never gotten around to it so we've
47:20flipped the rooms and now i am putting some floating lamp chains here these little screws are always a bit
47:29fiddly but okay make sure i'm all lined up oh no why are there have to be the smallest screws
47:40in the world
47:42so now here's the easy bit put the lampshade on screw the light bulb in and bob's your uncle now
47:49let
47:50them be light in the newly completed utility ewan strikes while the iron's hot when irons build up
48:01a scorch mark like this i've got a really good little trick this packet of paracetamol cost me
48:07only 39p you want the iron hot enough that it melts the paracetamol tablet and then using a pair of
48:14tweezers i'm going to gently rub it over the scorch mark the active ingredients in the paracetamol are
48:21combining with the scorch mark to lift it off and remove it without doing any damage look at that
48:29it's kind of acting like a little baby rubber and then using a damp cloth i'm just going to quickly
48:34wipe off anything that's loosened as i go i'm delighted with that look at it certainly cheaper
48:40than buying a brand new iron as rob puts the final touches to the living room unit my drawer fronts
48:46are on i'll put the handles on three more to go and ewan perfects the beds that looks so much
48:53better
48:55there's just time to put the last pieces into place whoa let's go guys come on last room how amazing
49:02would it be on our first week back finish on time come on let's do it we can do it
49:08oh here placemats yeah
49:11is that really necessary right here oh what we've left the floor stuff down oh no
49:20pull it up pull it up pull it up rob stop cleaning oh my god what is this table made
49:26of
49:26it's not a light come on guys this is heavy i got it i got it i got it i

50:25now it's an inviting space with sleek storage and hidden functions how fantastic behind this lovely
