01:08and instead lead with heart, clarity, and purpose.
01:11So happy to have you with us today.
01:13Welcome to the show.
01:13Thank you for having me, Mason.
01:15It's truly an honor to be here with you.
01:17So before we get into the seven marks
01:19of leadership themselves,
01:21what inspired you to create this framework
01:23in the first place, was there a defining moment
01:25or experience that led you here?
01:28Yes, well, the seven marks of leadership
01:30came out of a necessity, I will say.
01:34You know, when I experienced this fast growth
01:37in my company,
01:38I knew I needed to create a system
01:41to replicate the things that I believed.
01:46So let me explain.
01:48When I first started,
01:49I started with a small practice.
01:51It was just, I had just had four employees
01:53and it was just me there.
01:55And I was able to influence the team
01:57and we had a very defined way or view
02:02of what we can do
02:04or how we should treat patients.
02:05But then as we grew,
02:07I realized, you know,
02:08I added locations
02:09and I realized that I could not be everywhere
02:14and influence the team
02:15the way I did with my first team.
02:16So I did create this,
02:19I knew I had to create leaders,
02:21more leaders,
02:22but not only people in leadership positions,
02:25leaders everywhere.
02:27I really believe that everyone
02:29has a specific set of talents
02:30and they are unique,
02:32that they can move using those talents.
02:35They can impact the world
02:36in a better,
02:38in a good way.
02:39The question for me was,
02:42how do we create leaders?
02:43And what are the aspects
02:44that I want to replicate
02:45and inspire people to follow?
02:47And I came up with this
02:48seven marks of leadership
02:49as a toolbox,
02:52as a way to achieve this,
02:56inspire people to step into
02:58the leadership role.
03:00So basically,
03:01I know that your principles
03:03are rooted in timeless
03:05leadership principles,
03:06but how did you translate
03:07things that are timeless
03:08into something practical
03:10and usable
03:11in today's business world?
03:12So, yeah, okay.
03:13So, well, the way you do,
03:15the way we use these values
03:17are like universal,
03:19universal values,
03:20I will call them, right?
03:21So they are not just applicable
03:22to the workplace.
03:24They are applicable
03:24to any part of your life,
03:26really.
03:27So what I,
03:29what I try to,
03:30to inspire people to do
03:32in my and my
03:33and our employees,
03:34basically,
03:35is to just see
03:37this as a tool
03:39that they can apply
03:40everywhere in their life.
03:41So these principles
03:43are there to first
03:44impact the life
03:45of oneself
03:46or of us,
03:47of the employee,
03:48so they can be
03:49a positive light
03:50in the life
03:51of the patients
03:52and the people
03:53that they encounter with.
03:54So this,
03:56I give a series
03:57of examples
03:58and they are all
03:59in my book.
04:00It's basically
04:01understanding
04:02that everything
04:03that happened
04:05in your life
04:06and experiences
04:07in the path
04:08that you went
04:10through
04:10are very valuable
04:13things that you
04:13can use
04:14to inspire others.
04:15You're in a special
04:16position
04:16and the world
04:17is in an incomplete
04:19place
04:19without your talents,
04:22right?
04:23So I encourage
04:24people to embrace
04:25these values
04:27for,
04:27to improve
04:28in their life,
04:29not only at the workplace.
04:30And we can go
04:31through all these
04:32values one by one.
04:34So, but yeah,
04:35I don't know
04:35if that answers
04:36your question.
04:37It's interesting
04:38you say that
04:39because this is years ago,
04:40but I had the opportunity
04:42to meet Reverend Sam Childers
04:43and they made a movie
04:45about him
04:45called Machine Gun Preacher
04:47and it was,
04:48the starring actor
04:49was Gerard Butler
04:50and I had the opportunity
04:51to actually meet
04:52Sam Childers
04:52and he was,
04:54by his own admission,
04:56engaged in criminal activities.
04:57I mean,
04:57he was,
04:58he lived a hard life.
04:59He grew up with
05:00bikers
05:01and drugs
05:03and alcohol
05:03and all kinds of things
05:04around him
05:05and I'm shortening
05:06the whole version
05:07and the premise
05:07of the movie
05:07but,
05:08and my conversation
05:09with him
05:09but the gist
05:10of what he conveyed
05:11to me
05:11was exactly
05:12what you said.
05:13He said,
05:13I had to live
05:14the life I did
05:15to become the person
05:17that I became
05:18so that I was capable
05:19of doing good
05:21in the world
05:22that I'm able
05:22to do now.
05:23That's right.
05:23And it was fascinating
05:25to hear him
05:26tell that story
05:27but you've said
05:28that in very eloquent terms
05:29and not all of us
05:30have to live
05:31that kind of life
05:31to be able
05:32to provide value
05:33to others
05:34and his
05:35was a very
05:35dramatic change
05:36and his circumstances
05:38were severe
05:39by anybody's definition
05:40but he
05:41at some point
05:42acknowledged
05:43that that's what
05:44I had to go through
05:44to become the person
05:45that I am today
05:46which is very capable
05:48of helping others
05:49in ways that
05:50the normal person
05:51couldn't.
05:52Yeah,
05:52that's right.
05:53He has a special position
05:54and his path
05:55is a very valuable tool
05:57that he's now using
05:58to make a difference
06:00in people's lives
06:01and that's why
06:02Very much so.
06:03Yeah.
06:03People don't know.
06:05Yeah,
06:05but go ahead.
06:05Of the seven marks,
06:06which has been
06:07the hardest one
06:08for you to live out
06:08personally as a leader
06:09and what did that
06:11growth process look like?
06:12Yeah,
06:13well,
06:13believe it or not,
06:14I mean,
06:15I would say
06:15that the hardest
06:18to live out for me
06:19was the concept
06:20of teamwork
06:21and it is because
06:23I was always
06:24trying to control things,
06:25right?
06:25Like,
06:26so I was in charge
06:26of everything
06:27and to me
06:29what I,
06:29when I talk about teamwork
06:30I say,
06:31well,
06:31it is the capacity
06:33of trust
06:34in other people's capabilities
06:35and just invest
06:36in other people's talents
06:38and believing
06:38in other people's,
06:39in other people's
06:40ability to solve problems
06:42and for me
06:43it was,
06:44it was hard
06:45although it's something
06:46that it comes
06:46very natural now
06:48because obviously
06:49running a
06:50way bigger organization
06:52that at the beginning
06:53is impossible
06:54without trusting
06:55in other people's capabilities.
06:56One thing that
06:57when I went through
06:58this quest
06:59of trying to find
07:00this,
07:01this attributes
07:02of a leader
07:03when I thought
07:04of teamwork
07:04is I thought
07:05of the people
07:06that really
07:07made a difference
07:08in my life
07:10by believing
07:11in me
07:12so I realized
07:13that at some point
07:14I didn't believe
07:14in myself
07:15and,
07:15and
07:17there were
07:19a couple of
07:19occasions
07:20where someone else
07:21invested something
07:22in my life
07:22and made me
07:23believe in myself
07:24and that is
07:25the whole concept
07:26of teamwork
07:27is,
07:28you know,
07:28the most powerful
07:30thing you can say
07:31to someone
07:31I say that
07:32all the time
07:33is I believe
07:34in you,
07:35right?
07:35So just knowing
07:36that people
07:37don't believe
07:38in themselves
07:39and that is
07:39the greatest
07:40attribute of a leader,
07:41right?
07:41To just understand
07:42that everyone's unique
07:43and seeing the value
07:45of someone else
07:45before they even
07:47see it sometimes
07:48make them believe
07:49in themselves.
07:49So teamwork
07:51is important
07:52because that
07:52empowers other
07:53people
07:53but,
07:56but so it's,
07:57it also allows
07:58you to achieve
07:59greater things
08:00because now
08:01you have more,
08:02more capabilities
08:04and people,
08:05at least in my team,
08:06I've been blessed
08:07to have so many
08:08talented people
08:09join our,
08:10our,
08:10our group
08:11and I now
08:13enjoy seeing
08:14how,
08:14you know,
08:14they grow and flourish,
08:15they do their,
08:16the work way better
08:17than I could ever do.
08:19So,
08:20but it was struggle
08:21at the beginning.
08:21So I know that
08:22integrity is the first mark
08:24and in a lot of organizations
08:26integrity gets tested
08:27particularly when
08:28there's extreme pressure.
08:29How does a leader
08:30build and protect integrity
08:32when the stakes are high
08:33and temptations are great?
08:35That's an excellent question.
08:37Is this,
08:38I will say
08:38you protect integrity
08:39by understanding
08:40at all times
08:41the importance of it.
08:42Integrity is the first mark
08:43because it is necessary
08:45to build trust.
08:46We,
08:47and trust is key
08:49in every relationship
08:50and if you think about it,
08:51everything we do
08:52as leaders
08:53is building trust
08:55and building relationships.
08:56I have in my case
08:58with my company,
08:59I have to,
09:00I build relationships
09:01with my employees,
09:03with vendors,
09:04with doctors
09:04that are transitioning
09:05their practice to us
09:06and with our patients
09:08and that relationship
09:10is based on,
09:11has to be based on trust.
09:13So without integrity,
09:14it is almost impossible
09:16to build trust, right?
09:18Every decision you make,
09:20even if it's to feel tempted
09:21to just potentially do something
09:24or cut corners
09:25or,
09:25or,
09:26or,
09:27I don't know,
09:28and hence your,
09:29your point by adding
09:31some sort of lie
09:32or something like that
09:33is a,
09:34is,
09:34you call it,
09:35is a temptation,
09:36right?
09:36But we have to understand
09:37and remember all the time
09:38that this little win
09:40that you could win
09:41by not acting
09:43with,
09:43with integrity
09:44is not a good investment
09:46for the future.
09:47So to me,
09:48you know,
09:49it is important
09:50to build a great reputation,
09:51but more than building
09:52a great reputation
09:53is building
09:54a great character,
09:55right?
09:55So it's,
09:56so reputation
09:57is what
09:58the world perceives,
10:00but character
10:00is who you are.
10:01And by building
10:02a great character
10:03with great integrity
10:04that will eventually,
10:06naturally,
10:06will build a great reputation,
10:08which is,
10:08you know,
10:09I'm going to,
10:09I'm going to piggyback on that.
10:11For those listening,
10:12I,
10:12I've been very fortunate
10:13to have good mentors around
10:14and one of them
10:16explained to me something
10:16I've never forgotten
10:17and I'll share
10:18with those who are listening,
10:19but as leaders,
10:19our decisions are only as sound
10:21as the facts
10:21in which they're based
10:22and we can't see everything,
10:25hear everything
10:25and know everything.
10:26We have to rely
10:27on other people.
10:28And you said
10:28the word trust.
10:29And if they,
10:31people that we
10:32as leaders rely on
10:33don't trust
10:34that they're protected
10:35and that they have
10:35an open place
10:36to speak truth,
10:37then they're going
10:38to exaggerate good news
10:40and cover up
10:41or distort bad news
10:42for fear of consequences.
10:44And by default,
10:45I don't have,
10:46as a leader,
10:47don't have the information
10:48I need to make good choices
10:49because I don't have the truth.
10:51And whose responsibility
10:52is that?
10:53That's mine.
10:53If I've created
10:54an environment
10:54where people don't trust
10:56and can't share
10:57what they see,
10:59hear,
10:59feel,
10:59can do
11:00with me,
11:01then by default
11:02I'm incapable
11:04of doing my best.
11:05So I love what you said
11:06about trust
11:07and I couldn't agree
11:07with you more.
11:08Yeah.
11:09It is important to,
11:10and I tell this
11:11to my staff all the time
11:13and in general
11:13for myself,
11:14is embracing
11:15and acknowledging
11:17our imperfections.
11:18So,
11:19and that's something
11:20that I struggled with
11:21too before.
11:22Like I always had
11:23to be excellent.
11:24I always had to
11:24just because of my,
11:26you know,
11:27my path.
11:27I grew up poor
11:28and I always,
11:29I had to just
11:30be excellent
11:31at everything
11:32to gain scholarships
11:33to just get,
11:34try to get out
11:35of that reality.
11:37And at some point
11:37I realized
11:38that I wasn't
11:39comfortable
11:40with my mistakes
11:41or my imperfections.
11:42I felt like
11:43they were weaknesses.
11:44So I now realizing,
11:46embracing this imperfection
11:48and see it
11:48as a great opportunity,
11:50right?
11:50So we have
11:51unlimited potential.
11:52We're never going
11:52to be perfect.
11:53The goal is
11:54not to achieve perfection,
11:55but understanding
11:56that every day
11:57you have to improve
11:58and you improve
11:59by acknowledging
12:00your imperfections.
12:01And that's why
12:01I try to tell
12:02my team
12:03and encourage them
12:04to see them as,
12:05you know,
12:05this is an opportunity.
12:06You made a mistake.
12:08Yeah.
12:08Now,
12:09what do you do with that?
12:10How do you prevent
12:12this to be,
12:12you know,
12:13that this is the very thing
12:14that can make you greater.
12:15Today we have to be
12:16better than yesterday
12:17and tomorrow
12:17we have to be better
12:18than today.
12:19That's the goal.
12:20It's interesting
12:21you say that.
12:22You talk about imperfections.
12:23I think a lot of times
12:24people assume that,
12:25oh,
12:25I'm the manager
12:26or I'm the leader.
12:27I'm supposed to have
12:27all the answers
12:28and it's nice when you do,
12:30but it's not realistic.
12:32And I'm thinking back
12:33to the time
12:34I was a young second lieutenant
12:35in the Missouri Army
12:36National Guard
12:37and we were,
12:37our unit was activated
12:39for state flood duty
12:40and they sent us
12:41to St. Genevieve, Missouri,
12:42which was on the Mississippi River
12:43and there was a town
12:44that was on the verge
12:45of being washed away.
12:46And the mayor
12:46was a gentleman
12:47by the name of Bill Anderson
12:48and he was an older guy,
12:50but he had wisdom.
12:51And I remember him
12:52sitting in a meeting
12:53with the city leaders
12:54and just said,
12:55I don't know what to do.
12:56I'm conflicted
12:57between this,
12:57this and this.
12:58I think we have
12:58all bad choices.
12:59I think we have to pick
13:00the least bad choice here.
13:02I'm not sure
13:02what we should do.
13:03And as opposed
13:04to a false sense
13:06of importance
13:07or I'm in charge,
13:09I've got this,
13:09we're going to do this.
13:10He was just humble
13:11and honest
13:12and imperfect.
13:13And I watched
13:14the faces
13:16in the room.
13:17I felt the mood
13:18in the room
13:19shift
13:19and it was just like
13:21everyone just wanted
13:22to hug him
13:22and say,
13:23we're in this together.
13:24What about this?
13:24And what about that?
13:25And they were
13:27invested
13:27in coming up
13:29collaboratively
13:30with an outcome
13:30that could work.
13:32That's right.
13:33And I contrast
13:34what I saw
13:35and what I felt
13:36and what I heard
13:37with what I think
13:38would have happened
13:39if he would have
13:40been the answer man
13:41like, well,
13:42we'll just do this,
13:42this, this, this
13:43and it's going to work
13:44just perfect
13:44and everyone knew better.
13:46But it was,
13:47he was comfortable
13:48being uncomfortable
13:49and he,
13:50there was perfection
13:51in his willingness
13:52to be him perfect.
13:53Yeah.
13:54It's just one of our,
13:55one of our,
13:56of the marks
13:57of leadership
13:58is humility, right?
13:59Look,
14:00that's the,
14:01what I call
14:01the king of all virtues.
14:03Without humility,
14:03you can't,
14:04you can't really lead
14:06or lead right,
14:07right?
14:08Lead correctly.
14:09You are inspired
14:10if you think about your,
14:11you want to follow
14:12a humble leader,
14:13someone that can,
14:15you know,
14:15acknowledge their mistakes,
14:17but also knows that,
14:19that is full of gifts.
14:21Like I,
14:21it's okay for me to say,
14:23you know,
14:23I have a lot of gifts.
14:24I am,
14:25I am great,
14:25but it's humility
14:26is about knowing
14:27that you're not more important
14:29than anyone else,
14:30right?
14:30So everyone is unique
14:32and everyone is valuable
14:33and everyone has something
14:34to add to the table
14:35that you don't have,
14:37right?
14:37So I don't know it all,
14:38although I have great,
14:39great talents
14:40and virtues,
14:41but I'm not perfect.
14:43So let's talk a little bit
14:44about positivity
14:45because I know
14:46that can be misunderstood
14:47in leadership
14:47and sometimes
14:48there's that false
14:49sense of positivity
14:50where people are like,
14:51oh,
14:51that guy's just full of it.
14:52He's always saying stuff.
14:53He doesn't believe any of that
14:54and there's the genuine type.
14:56How do you differentiate
14:57true positivity
14:58from people
14:59who try to fake it
15:00till they make it?
15:01Yes.
15:02So,
15:02well,
15:02positivity,
15:03first,
15:04I always make the clarification,
15:05right?
15:06So positivity
15:06is not pretending
15:08that everything is fine
15:09or everything is good
15:10or just ignoring
15:11the bad.
15:13It's just understanding
15:14that even the most negative thing
15:16in your life
15:17can make you better,
15:18which we're just talking about
15:20this example
15:20of the life
15:21of this man
15:22that now is leading,
15:24is doing something
15:24with that.
15:26Even though it was
15:27a negative experience,
15:28now he turned it
15:29into a positive thing
15:30that is impactful.
15:31And so those scars
15:33are very valuable,
15:34you know,
15:34like the wounds
15:35that we have
15:36and that we can use
15:37to inspire other people.
15:38So that is
15:39what a positive leader
15:41is.
15:42But,
15:42you know,
15:43my favorite,
15:43my favorite,
15:44one of my favorite quotes
15:46is,
15:46it's better to light a candle
15:47than to curse the darkness.
15:49Say it and complain
15:50about the darkness
15:51or we can choose
15:52to do something about it.
15:53So that's another,
15:54that's what a leader does,
15:55right?
15:56So inspires people
15:57by lighting up
15:58a candle.
15:59You inspire other people
16:00to light up candles
16:01and then eventually
16:02that room that was
16:04in darkness
16:05is now full of light
16:06because everyone
16:07is lighting up a candle.
16:09So in the teams,
16:10in the practical way,
16:11I say,
16:12I,
16:12at the practice level,
16:14so the,
16:15we as an organization
16:16want to build
16:17great environments,
16:18great workplaces
16:19and great,
16:20like,
16:20attractive environments.
16:22Patients can feel
16:23if there is conflict,
16:25if there's something
16:25going on
16:26in the team
16:27and if there is
16:28a disgruntled
16:29employee
16:30or something
16:30like that.
16:31So for us,
16:33that reflects
16:33on patient experience.
16:35So having a great environment
16:37and great environments
16:38start with positivity
16:39with,
16:40because we know
16:42that we don't have
16:43a perfect organization.
16:44So that's first
16:45acknowledging that,
16:46right?
16:47So,
16:47but then
16:47what do you do
16:49to change

17:35ask different
17:37questions
17:37because it redirects
17:38focus and attention
17:39towards something
17:40more positive
17:41and productive.
17:42For example,
17:42if something bad
17:43comes,
17:43something bad
17:44happens,
17:45he might encourage
17:46people to ask
17:46a different question
17:47such as,
17:48what's great
17:48about this problem
17:49or what's not
17:50perfect yet
17:51or how can I
17:52use this
17:52and that opens
17:54up the brain
17:54to all kinds
17:55of different
17:56positive possibilities
17:57where something
17:59that someone
17:59could view
18:00as a negative
18:00experience
18:01produces a positive
18:02outcome
18:02and sometimes
18:04obstacles create
18:05the greatest
18:06opportunities
18:06and I agree
18:08with everything
18:08you're saying
18:08about the positivity
18:09thing,
18:09it's huge.
18:10So let's talk
18:10a little bit
18:11about empathy.
18:11People talk
18:12about that a lot.
18:13Can you share
18:14perhaps an example

18:15moment where
18:16leading with empathy

18:49because to be

18:51is not treating
18:51you necessarily

18:53it's the way
18:54you want
18:55to be treated.
18:55That means
18:56that I have
18:56to understand
18:57what are
18:59your talents
19:00who you are
19:01and you are
19:02I say
19:02well people
19:03are like gifts
19:04right?
19:05In order for
19:06you never
19:06someone hands
19:07you a gift
19:08you don't
19:08just set it
19:09aside
19:09you open up
19:10the gift
19:11and see
19:12what's in
19:12there.
19:13So an
19:13example
19:14of this
19:15has been
19:16one specific
19:17example
19:17was
19:18understanding
19:18so there
19:19was this
19:19employee
19:20that
19:21had
19:22like
19:22we were
19:23hiring
19:23for a
19:24very

19:34although
19:34everyone
19:36encouraged me

19:44thinking of
19:45the path

19:46this can
19:47make a

19:57of empathy

20:11feels
20:12like
