Shan, RJ, and Bobby broke down the first offseason power rankings, reacting to where teams landed after free agency and debating some of the biggest surprises across the league. They discussed the dominance at the top, teams they felt were overrated, and where the Cowboys ultimately landed.
Transcript
00:00Let's get to our first offseason power rankings now that we're week two into free agency.
00:06Yeah, we got NFL.com's power rankings from Eric Edholm, and so he's got a reshuffling of the deck after
00:13everybody's made some of their moves.
00:15Just before we get started, where would you say roughly, because obviously it's, you know, they're back behind several teams.
00:22Where would you say roughly the Cowboys were at the end of the season, and do you think they're any
00:26different today?
00:27Okay. Roughly. I mean, they had to be in the 20s. Yeah, I would have guessed 23, 22.
00:35Yeah, I was thinking 22 to 24, somewhere in there, probably.
00:39And now I would go probably three or four spots higher.
00:47Okay, so as high as 18, maybe somewhere in there. I don't think I'd get higher than 18.
00:5521 was where they were, I'd say, at the end. And I would guess 18 now.
00:59Okay. All right. Very good. Well, we'll go down the list. Do you want me to just jump in, Cowboys?
01:02Or do you want me to go top? How do you want me to do this?
01:03Top to bottom.
01:04Okay. Number one team in the NFL is...
01:07RJ's Rams unseating the Seahawks?
01:10No.
01:11Seattle.
01:11It is the Seattle Seahawks. Even with the departures, all these different departures that they've had, they're still big on
01:18the Seattle Seahawks.
01:19Number two.
01:20Rams.
01:21You don't even have to leave the division. It is the Los Angeles Rams that are number two.
01:25In fact, we don't have to leave that specific type of division. We just got to leave a conference to
01:30find number three on the list.
01:32Denver?
01:32The Denver Broncos are ranked third.
01:36They're up a spot from where they previously were to end the season.
01:39This is after the Waddle trade?
01:42Yes. Yeah, so this is after the Waddle trade, and they've got them at number three.
01:45Now, they had them at number four at the end of the season.
01:48Who's y'all's three?
01:50Who?
01:52Are you putting number one Denver over New England?
01:55No.
01:56You're not putting Denver over New England?
01:58Mm-mm.
02:00Are you putting Denver over Buffalo?
02:03Yeah, yes. For now.
02:05Are you putting Denver over Baltimore?
02:07Yes.
02:08Yeah.
02:09That was quick.
02:10I might have, the highest team I may have here, and it's, I've been burned by being high on them
02:17in the last couple years,
02:19but Houston's so good. It's just I don't know about Stroud.
02:22But I don't know about a lot of the AFC quarterbacks.
02:24Yeah, that's a stupid take.
02:26Yeah, I don't know if I can get Houston.
02:28I don't think, if I were picking right now, I think I would,
02:31I don't think I'd pick Houston with a division.
02:33I think I would pick Houston to beat Denver eight times out of ten.
02:36Whoa!
02:37No, I disagree.
02:39It's one of the only teams they can play where the quarterback's even more of a question to me.
02:43Ooh, all right.
02:46Number four on the list.
02:47Next, we've done Broncos, Rams, Seahawks, and these are Eric Edholm's NFL power rankings after free agency.
02:55First week.
02:57To me, a lot of these rankings pay homage to the people.
03:00Were you about to say Panthers?
03:02No, Patriots.
03:02Oh, I thought you were going to say Panthers.
03:03I was like, my goodness, you're really high on Jalen Phillips.
03:06Patriots.
03:07No, not Patriots.
03:08Patriots might be getting a little disrespect here.
03:10Buffalo, it is the Buffalo Bills.
03:11They actually move up a spot on this list.
03:14Number five.
03:19They are going to put New England.
03:23Nope.
03:24Baltimore.
03:25Nope.
03:28Are they going to put Chicago?
03:31Nope.
03:31Philly.
03:32Nope.
03:32Green Bay.
03:33Nope.
03:34Jacksonville.
03:35Nope.
03:37San Fran.
03:38The top three teams in the NFC, according to this list,
03:41are all in the NFC West, the San Francisco 49ers,
03:43after they say you get the ever-reliable Mike Evans,
03:46you've cleaned things up after the bizarre Brandon Ayuk situation,
03:50you get Oso Digizua, so they're high on the 49ers.
03:52Number six on the list.
03:55Up nine spots from where they finished the season.
03:59Up nine spots, so this still is not New England.
04:03Not Houston.
04:04Not New England.
04:05AFC, though.
04:06Baltimore.
04:07Baltimore.
04:08And they haven't made a whole bunch of moves.
04:10That, to me, is just your pay and respect back to,
04:12well, they finished the season crappy,
04:13but we're going to assume Baltimore's good again.
04:15And I would do the same thing.
04:16Number seven.
04:18Down four spots.
04:19New England.
04:20The New England Patriots.
04:22Saying that there's some health risks about their biggest offseason additions,
04:26and saying that they added some age as well,
04:28so they don't know how much better they got compared to everybody else.
04:30Number eight on this list.
04:31AFC.
04:36One, two, three, four.
04:38Jacksonville.
04:39Nope.
04:40Houston.
04:41The Houston Texans.
04:42So you've got in the top eight the only representatives from the NFC are all the NFC West teams.
04:47Wow.
04:48Sounds like a vulnerable conference of sorts, if Dallas would be on top of things.
04:52Number nine.
04:53We've only given another NFC team, and no, it's not the Cardinals.
04:57Philly.
04:58Nope.
05:00Chicago.
05:00The Chicago Bears.
05:01Saying that it's been a mixed free agency for them.
05:04Won some, lost some.
05:05Number 10.
05:06And this team is up a spot.
05:10Pack.
05:11Nope.
05:13You know, I'm.
05:15You asked for the buzzer back.
05:16I know, I'm regretting it.
05:17I'm regretting putting that buzzer.
05:21Philly?
05:21Philly.
05:22I don't know how you can say Philly's up.
05:23Hey, give me my ring.
05:24Yeah.
05:25Just don't buzz me.
05:26I don't know how you can say Philly's up with everything they've lost, and they've just replaced it with, like,
05:31some gambles.
05:32Right.
05:33So, I don't know how.
05:34Unless you're just saying everybody else that's moved in the shuffling has been worse, and you like their core better.
05:40Well, they got re-quilling, unlike you.
05:41I liked it.
05:42Number 11.
05:46We're.
05:46I love.
05:47AFC.
05:48West.
05:51Chargers?
05:51Chargers over Jaguars, who are 12.
05:54Woo!
05:55Disrespecting RJ's team.
05:56Not a lot of people buying in on the Jaguars.
05:58It doesn't feel like high.
05:59Did they lose?
05:59Did they lose, guys?
06:01The Jaguars?
06:03No.
06:03Not really.
06:04They lost.
06:04They lost.
06:05They lost A-chan.
06:06A-chan and a linebacker, right?
06:07Chris A-chan.
06:08Yeah.
06:08And Devin Lloyd.
06:09Yeah.
06:09Just go through the rest.
06:10Yeah.
06:11People in Jacksonville were not happy with that.
06:12This seems really high.
06:1313.
06:14The Pittsburgh Steelers.
06:1514.
06:16They added a lot, but they don't have a quarterback.
06:1814.
06:19The Kansas City Chiefs.
06:21Without a quarterback.
06:2215.
06:22The Green Bay Packers.
06:23I think that's some disrespect.
06:25Like, I don't think Green Bay is, like, top of the league, but that feels a little disrespectful.
06:28Look at his stank face.
06:3016.
06:31The Lions.
06:31Aiden in his Packer hat.
06:3217.
06:33The Carolina Panthers.
06:34We're still not to the Dallas Cowboys yet.
06:3618.
06:37The Indianapolis Colts.
06:3919.
06:40The Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
06:42And at number 20, one of the only teams who has not moved up or down, basically, according
06:47to these rankings since the end of the season, the Dallas Cowboys.
06:50It says, what?
06:51No spending spree?
06:52Some fans might have been disappointed by Dallas' quiet start to free agency.
06:55After hearing Jerry Jones casually hint the team could spend more.
06:58I don't know how casual it was.
06:59But it follows a pattern that we've seen before.
07:01Remember the 2024 offseason when the Cowboys were supposed to be all in?
07:04Next season, Dallas is switching to a 3-4 scheme on defense, and there are parts required
07:08on all three levels.
07:09Linebacker looks pretty bare with the injury-prone DeMarvin Overshawn and not a lot else.
07:13But cornerback and edge rusher aren't too far behind on the needs list.
07:16If the Cowboys went all defense with their eight picks in the NFL draft, including their
07:20two first-rounders, I probably wouldn't hate it.
07:23This is the sort of class, rich with edge-rushing talent, that should encourage a team to at least
07:27be open to such an idea.
07:29I can get them ahead of Tampa.
07:32I don't feel great about it, but I could talk myself into it.
07:35Get them ahead of Indy.
07:37Same.
07:39I think that's where the line is.
07:40Now, I don't agree.
07:41I think Pittsburgh's too high.
07:42Now, can you get teams behind them ahead of them?
07:45Because they've got the Bengals directly behind them.
07:47You could.
07:48The Falcons.
07:50No.
07:52Now, there's just too many questions.
07:55The Saints, 23?
07:56No.
07:57The Commanders at 24?
07:59No.
07:59Could you put the Vikings ahead of them?
08:01Yeah.
08:01I mean, it depends.
08:02The Vikings being 25 seems really low.
08:04They were about a 500 team last year.
08:05Super Bowl champs, man.
08:07And you're saying Kyler's starting, right?
08:09Yeah.
08:10I would.
08:10Yeah.
08:11I mean, I get it.
08:12I mean, unknown with Jaden.
08:14Unknown with Atlanta quarterback.
08:15They dropped Minnesota four spots.
08:17Unknown with Minnesota quarterback.
08:18Like, three unknowns.
08:20But, yeah, they could beat the Cowboys.
08:21But can you get them ahead of Carolina?
08:22I don't know that I can.
08:24I mean, Carolina beat that ass last year.
08:26Detroit.
08:27But they lost the Cowboy killer, Rico.
08:29Detroit is going to be the value.
08:32The value possibility.
08:33I would bet on the Detroit bounce back.
08:36They lost a lot of guys.
08:37Yeah.
08:38Like, if they played tomorrow, I'd pick Detroit.
08:40Yeah.
08:40Green Bay?
08:40Detroit feels like a team that's going to either...
08:42They worked us.
08:43Detroit feels like a team that will, like, either make a bunch of people a lot of money
08:47or lose people money because they are just in the middle of a rapid crumble because
08:51of stuff.
08:51You can't pick the Cowboys over Green Bay right now?
08:54No.
08:55KC?
08:56Pitt?
08:58I mean, Kansas City, you could.
09:00Yeah.
09:01You could.
09:01Kansas City, Pittsburgh, I think I can.
09:02Other than that, I definitely can't get them over.
09:04There's nothing more depressing than being a Steeler fan heading into this season.
09:07Yes.
09:08It's like...
09:08It sucks.
09:09What is it?
09:10How do you get excited?
09:11What are they doing?
09:12Like, that front office, that ownership, I know they get, you know, all the credit for
09:16stability.
09:16How can you go into a season if Aaron Rodgers is the quarterback?
09:20You're locked.
09:22Like, the ceiling...
09:22Will Howard, man.
09:23Huh?
09:24Will Howard.
09:24I'd rather Will Howard.
09:26I would, too.
09:26I'd rather some mystery, some intrigue, than Aaron Rodgers.
09:32Come on.
09:32It honestly feels like, yeah, like, being a Steelers fan feels like maybe what it was
09:35like to be, like, over the last 15 years, like a Jazz fan, where it's like, they're
09:40okay.
09:40Jazz went to two finals.
09:41But, like, I'm talking about the last, like, 15 years, like the Donovan Mitchell runs, where
09:45it's like, we have some good players, but, like, it never feels like we're ever going
09:48to break through.
09:49That's a good one.
09:49It's like, like, the rest of the list, 26, the Titans, 27, the Giants, 28, the Browns,
09:5329, the Raiders, 30, the Miami Dolphins, 31, the New York Jets, and last place, despite
09:58owning the top three spots in the NFC, is the Arizona Cardinals as the worst team in the
10:03national football league.
10:04I am, dude, like, the fact, there are two teams ahead of the Jets that are worse than
10:09the Jets.
10:10They need to have, they need to clean house.
10:12They need to clean house.
10:14A lot of people with the fan text, who is Travis Achan?
10:17Because I was in part of here.
10:19Natatolo.
10:19Detroit plays a last place schedule.
10:21The over wins is one of my favorite bets of the offseason.
10:24That's true.
10:25877-881-1053 to weigh in on the Franklin Frankel fan text and to win the tickets.
10:33We're about to hook you up with here on DFW Sports Station.
10:36How long do you think the Barnwell contender thing will take?
10:39Short or long?
10:40I could make it short.
10:42Yeah, I could make it short.
10:43So he did the weaknesses, the contender weaknesses.
10:47So the big remaining issues for the 20 contending teams.
10:52Again, the 20, 20, 20 contending teams.
10:56I was like, all right, let's just go.
10:57I want to see.
10:57I did my old Rangers trick.
10:59Control F, type in Rangers with the S because Rangers Suarez screws
11:02everything up.
11:03So I just typed in cow.
11:05Cow, right?
11:06And then it put the B and the O and the Y and didn't even pop up.
11:10Did not pop up.
11:11So he is not having them among their 20 contenders.
11:15Look, that's fine.
11:16They have a lot of holes.
11:17But, I mean, he's got teams.
11:20He has 5 and 12 Washington in here.
11:23Who was it?
11:24Was it Tannenbaum that we saw at the end of the season
11:25in their year-in-advance predictions?
11:27He picked them to win the Super Bowl next year?
11:29Washington?
11:29Yeah.
11:30Yeah.
11:31So, like, the teams he has on this are Baltimore, Buffalo, Carolina,
11:35Chicago, Denver, Detroit.
11:36Carolina's a contender?
11:37Yeah.
11:38Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Green Bay, Houston, Jacksonville,
11:42Kansas City, Chargers, Rams, Minnesota, Pats, Eagles,
11:47Pittsburgh, San Fran, Seattle, Tampa, and Washington.
11:52It's just, like, are we...
11:54Yeah.
11:54Okay, you're right.
11:55This doesn't have to take long.
11:56I can see, like, San Fran, they don't have a ton of holes to fill, right?
12:00I've been winning you over on him.
12:01Yeah.
12:01The Cowboys' biggest issue to me outside is simple.
12:04It stacks health.
12:05That's the biggest question mark.
12:06That's not a hole to fill.
12:07So, is he either saying the Cowboys have no holes to fill
12:10or they're that far away?
12:13I mean, you get the defensive plays halfway decent.
12:15I don't know what he means by contender.
12:16Does he mean that's a team that could, like,
12:18by the craziness of the NFL, win the Super Bowl?
12:20Or is he saying, like, these are teams that could potentially compete
12:22for a playoff spot?
12:24I think he's talking about competing, like, for...
12:28You could see it.
12:29As the year goes on, if they end up at the NFC Divisional Round,
12:33you're not stunned.
12:34Well, then it's insane to put the Chiefs in there right now.
12:37Well, yeah, because the Chiefs couldn't end up in the NFC Divisional Round.
12:40Because of Mahomes, the team, or everything?
12:42I mean, it's a brutal football team right now outside of Mahomes.
12:46And even still, like, Mahomes, like, there's no telling
12:48how much availability we're there.
12:49I don't think you can, like, reliably project them and say,
12:51that's a team that could reasonably be a contender.
