00:00the best off seasons in the national football league yeah this is from ted win uh our good
00:05buddy over from the athletic and ted is somebody who is i i love reading the way that he views
00:12these sort of lists because typically who won the off season when those sort of things are
00:17done by analysts they're going to be done a lot of times with just like this player was good yeah
00:21they spent the most money had the most draft picks the same thing with like the giants thing
00:26the giants and jets draft or the browns like where it's like yeah of course they got a bunch of
00:29picks
00:30so so what are we really saying ted likes to look at specifically like do study into what is their
00:35scheme let me see how the scheme fits with what this player does and where i've seen so very very
00:41brainy with the way that he approaches things so this is good news for the cowboys on this list and
00:46there is potentially bad news on this list so the way that he breaks this up he takes a look
00:51at the
00:52teams that have the best nfl off seasons based on the tiers of where he believes they currently are
00:57so the first one that he has here is he has title contenders which are like who are the teams
01:02that
01:02have continued to arm themselves for the future he's got the rebuilding teams the teams who are not going
01:07to do anything in the immediate future they're just trying to build a foundation for getting better
01:13and competing probably next year and then he's got the teams that he says are on the brink the ones
01:18who
01:19are kind of teetering around 500 and it's like all right this is your off season to really potentially
01:24push yourself up and that's the one where it's probably going to make the most difference in
01:29terms of how you're able to improve your football team so we'll go down the the tiers list really
01:33quickly and we'll see how long it takes to get to the cowboys we won't read through all the
01:37evaluations as deep as they are the number one team in the title contender section as or the first
01:42listed at least under title contenders as best off seasons the philadelphia eagles people keep
01:49putting the eagles on these lists what and i don't know why so he said the biggest needs heading into
01:55the off season were wide receiver corner edge and free safety they acquired jonathan grenard makai lemon
02:01they went got reek woolen he said that the eagles finished fourth last season in past defense dvoa
02:06despite having some of their weaknesses at corner opposite quinnon mitchell but he thinks that
02:10they're probably going to lose aj brown that'll probably change some of this but he thinks that
02:16they've gotten enough pieces in place to kind of sustain the core that they've built and be able
02:22to continue to have success in the future well i think when you're making a list like this
02:25you can just do it off of on paper editions and take the emotion and the drama of the hurts
02:34thing out
02:35of it i think you and i are thinking about philadelphia because of that quarterback cloud hanging
02:40over their head and ted is like all right let's look on paper about what they did i mean can
02:46you
02:46at least give it up that you do you really like what they did in the off season i know
02:50you're not
02:51a big fan of uh reek like i was you not sweating their grenard i like grenard i don't like
02:59grenard for
02:59what they gave up okay um and lemon was my least favorite of the top receivers yeah so to me
03:05i don't love
03:06it but i mean the way other people view those guys i understand why they would like it and think
03:11that the off season was good but man it's i i don't know that reek woolen is a total scheme
03:16fit
03:17um given their depth at corner he's probably somebody who can just play a little bit more
03:21just in his comfort zone and when they're going to be in other coverage looks they can just take
03:25him off the field and not have to worry about it um but mckay lemon if people are right about
03:30mckay lemon that's a huge acquisition if people are right and i'm wrong which very well could happen
03:34i'm wrong a lot and i own it every time that i am um if they if they're right about
03:40that
03:40evaluation then that's a that's a smash that's a huge home run for them uh next on the list and
03:46this is ted win's list of the best nfl offseason split up by tears i'm worried that mckay is going
03:50to be like that that third and six converter he's gonna you're gonna see him like those tough
03:57grind it out the stop they need and then there's some replay of like oh look how cleanly he shook
04:01the
04:02corner at the line of scrimmage and it was just done instantly yeah he's he's gonna see his sway
04:07he's got a chance that's the thing nobody knows where he's going because that head they just they're
04:11just swinging it everywhere uh number two on the list this is the top contenders what if he does
04:16that one day where he runs around it's like that he breaks into the route it's it's mental warfare
04:23mental warfare uh number two on the list i'm like dizzy after doing that the san francisco 49ers which
04:28you don't love hearing that um but it said that talked about their big acquisitions he likes the
04:33mike evans deal he really likes the dijon stripling pick which a lot of people did not i i liked
04:38it but
04:38it was it was a little earlier than i thought he'd go he was like mid second round late second
04:42round
04:42i thought uh but then he also lists osa odigizua oh and he says the 49ers finally found a penetrating
04:51three technique defensive tackle who is perfect for their scheme and trading for osa odigizua uh he said
04:57that mike evans coming there he's still a good receiver said christian kirk is still a good slot
05:01guy who should thrive with what kyle shanahan does they were able to get dre greenlaw to come back
05:06even with their injury risks if he's healthy that's an upside starter right there he likes
05:11stripling he said he's considered to reach by some but his potential to be a supercharged version of
05:16what juan jennings did for this offense will bring much needed big playability on the perimeter he also
05:21liked the romello height pick as an edge rusher and then the third team he listed here as
05:25helping their offseason the most probably not as much for the draft but the los angeles rams dang
05:31all nfc all nfc as the contenders that most improved uh mainly just pointing to the fact
05:37that they went out there and really spent money on the cornerback now think about that he has them
05:41number three for the offseason for this year's contenders while using pick 13 on the future
05:47quarterback yep yeah imagine how much better it could have been if they would have just done that
05:51uh now the rebuilding teams which we can blow through really quickly uh number one las vegas
05:56raiders they obviously just had a ton of money to spend yeah so they were able to add a bunch
06:00of
06:00capital they drafted some nice pieces in there they get fernando mendoza's their future tyler
06:05linderbaum's a great center uh they obviously won the bidding war to go get nicobe dean they were able
06:11to stack some of those georgia defenders together on their defense uh number two the cleveland browns who
06:16everybody universally loved their draft and what they were able to do to move back pick up extra
06:21picks still get guys with big value where they did and then number three on this list the guy the
06:26team
06:27that i have said i don't necessarily think they're they are going to be good this year but i'm saying
06:31if there's going to be a they came out of nowhere playoff contender it's the saints and he's got the
06:38saints is number three saying loves jordan tyson they obviously added uh travis a chan uh junior who
06:44we've now corrected his name they helped their offensive line with david edwards uh he likes
06:49noah fant being a potential fit with what they try to do in the offense we've seen how kellen likes
06:53to
06:53use tight ends for vertical seam stuff before now the team's on the brink and the number one team
06:59listed in tedwin's rankings over at the athletic of best off seasons of the nfl
07:05he says the biggest needs heading to the offseason edge defensive tackle cornerback linebacker literally
07:12the entire defense uh the key acquisitions caleb downs malachi lawrence jay sean barham he lists
07:18their draft class as their key acquisition but he says the cowboys look like they are finally putting
07:24together a team i think it's important this write-up nobody knows this scheme as an analyst i don't think
07:30better than maybe cody alexander match quarters is up there but ted winn is going to know this scheme
07:35better than a lot of people who cover the nfl and him talking about the moves that they make i
07:41think
07:41is important when you think of it through the lens of christian parker he said the cowboys look like
07:44they are finally putting together a team that can contend in the aftermath of the micah parsons
07:49trade players have responded well to coach brian schottenheimer and the hiring of offensive
07:53coordinator clayton adams was inspired former coordinator matt eberflus's defense was too predictable
07:58and exacerbated a lack of talent the cowboys are attempting to rectify that by replacing eberflus
08:03with christian parker from vic fangio's eagle staff to modernize the unit the front office fulfilled
08:08much of parker's checklist of needs through the draft getting a dynamic nickel was the top item
08:13on parker's list and they get caleb downs who's going to be their the leader of their secondary
08:17they also get edge help with their second round pick malachi lawrence third round pick jay sean
08:22barham perfectly fits the zach bond archetype that is key into to a fangio influence system he can play
08:28off ball but can also move up to the line of scrimmage and play the run when they stem their
08:32fronts
08:33he says cornerback is still a major concern they obviously brought in a dory jackson recently and you've
08:37said that's your number two worry in terms of just roster building these days corners but that
08:43should be partially mitigated by the two deep safety shells that parker will deploy owner jerry jones has
08:48paid the premium for dragging out negotiations of waiting to play pay players but i think franchise
08:53tagging george pickens was the right move pickens had one great season after years in which effort was
08:58a legitimate issue on tape seeing if he can achieve consistency before giving him a lucrative contract
09:03is wise it's a win for the cowboys that pickens signed the tag keeping his lethal partnership
09:08with cd lamb alive for another year the offense still can win shootouts and the defense should be
09:14a much feistier unit he is a big fan of the fangio scheme i know he's a big fan of
09:18how schottenheimer
09:19designed the offense last year he thought that there was a lot about that that was really modern and
09:23forward moving but for ted win to look at that it's hilarious we go through that and the only things
09:30he mentions to give dallas a win for the offseason their draft picks and then the decision not to
09:35give the extension to pickens didn't even there was not even a mention there of gary rashaun gary
09:40not a mention of jaylen thompson who i think are good players and they're still going to contribute to
09:43that durant but that's how much durant that well i mean there's a lot of cowboys fans who won't put
09:47durant on there anymore i know because he won't give caleb downs number two caleb downs switching
09:53to number 13 so this is to me one of the more encouraging write-ups you see we see these
09:58lists all the
09:59time of people who like dallas's offseason don't like dallas's offseason we go through the draft
10:04grades and things and more it's i feel like we take it as a chance to react to like how
10:09we we feel
10:10about their analysis to me ted writing this is impactful because he knows what those players
10:17need to look like and i think there was a sense from a lot of people of you're not getting
10:22the big
10:22name stars you're not doing this or that in the offseason additions i think this is so clearly
10:28keys to the car given to christian parker to be able to build this the way he wants build the
10:33staff the way he wants we played those clips earlier this week of brian schottenheimer talking
10:36at length about how cool it was to watch them work um but i think that this is a a
10:42really encouraging
10:42write-up because nobody knows what fits that defense better from an analyst perspective than ted
10:47and he thinks the cowboys knocked it out of the park uh the last two on this list the minnesota
10:51vikings
10:52he likes the kyler murray addition he likes caleb banks as a fit for what they're trying to do over
10:56there uh and then the last one again within the division three of the top nine being in the
11:01division the new york giants loved their draft liked the isaiah likely addition thinks harbaugh is
11:07going to be impactful for them but that's the nine best off seasons from the athletic and ted win and
11:12the dallas cowboys are in there along with a lot of their rivals
