00:00What he did, what makes him great, you said this during the break,
00:04it's not like, we live in a world good-bad.
00:07Well, I don't want, use an example, I don't want C.C. Malinoa.
00:12I want C.C. Malinoa, but okay.
00:14Why not? He's bad.
00:16I don't want Ty Simpson. He's bad.
00:17He doesn't look at it that way.
00:20What are you looking for?
00:21And then what can that player do to help fit what you're looking for?
00:25Plus, how good is he?
00:26There's varying degrees of that.
00:28I think you're right about that.
00:30I think Brian Baldinger's right about that.
00:31I mean, what he said also about Caleb Downs.
00:35Like, if you're on YouTube Live right now, or you're not on YouTube Live,
00:38get to YouTube Live.
00:39You can always rewind it, go back, watch it.
00:41What he said about Caleb Downs, that was eye-opening tone.
00:45Like, some of the stuff that people see, or don't see, I should say, about Caleb Downs
00:48is like, well, you got Sonny Stiles there, you got Arville Reese there,
00:52you got a decent offensive line.
00:55Like, there's plays that he would make if he were in a different defense
00:58that he can't make because he has so many good players around him.
01:01I think this is important, and it's one of the things, I think, as I've gotten older,
01:05I've tried to become more and more open-minded
01:07because I used to come on after the NBA and NFL drafts
01:11and just blast away at, you know, decision-makers
01:15if they didn't take the guy I wanted.
01:17But the pool was small, right?
01:20Like, there were only, like, two guys I wanted in every draft.
01:23And if they didn't get them, I was losing my mind.
01:25And it's like, well, that's silly.
01:26If you're an NFL GM, you can't just like two guys.
01:29You have to like hundreds of guys.
01:32Well, no, according to media, Patriots only had 30 guys every year.
01:35Well, then, that was a very specific situation for them.
01:38Things got out of hand.
01:39It worked out until it didn't, and then when it didn't, it was a...
01:42But also, the league kind of passed them by when it came to those evaluations.
01:47And I also think even the guys you don't want in the draft,
01:49you have to find good things in them
01:51because when you're up, you're up.
01:53You have to take somebody.
01:55And, you know, later in the draft,
01:56you start really asking your assistant coaches questions
01:59and, hey, who could you work with?
02:01And you get those guys.
02:02We've heard those stories, too.
02:04Like, all right, fine.
02:05I trust you on this one.
02:06We've all been in the war room together.
02:08I might not have the same thought on a player you do,
02:10but it's later in the draft, right?
02:11There's not as much...
02:13The stakes aren't as high, right?
02:15Unless you're the Browns, you take two quarterbacks
02:17in the third and fifth round.
02:18But either way, in this case,
02:20I do think the question a lot of Browns fans have to think about
02:23when it comes to offensive line,
02:24do you want a guy that's ready day one?
02:27Or is it more important to see who has a greater potential
02:32to be really, really, really good?
02:33Because those might be two different guys.
02:36I mean, I want a guy that's going to be really, really, really good.
02:38And if I've got to go through the arguments of...
02:42If I've got to go through the early season arguments,
02:45we'll bust, not bust, whatever, I guess I have to do it.
02:48I can't just avoid awkward conversations with fans.
02:51I mean, there are players that you take
02:53and you avoid them for the most part,
02:55but there's a lot of guys that we're going to have to argue it out about this.
03:00And I think there are a lot of people trying to...
03:02I think they're trying to find the perfect prospect at number six,
03:05and it's frustrating because there is not.
03:08The last couple of drafts,
03:10there hasn't been that perfect prospect that we wanted to get into.
03:14Like, yeah, the Jaguars, they ended up going to the playoffs.
03:17Yeah, they took Travis Hunter.
03:19Travis Hunter got hurt.
03:21And I still want to know what they're going to do with the guy.
03:24Like, are they going to put them offense, defense?
03:25Like, we got solid Mason Graham,
03:29but I think Mason Graham, I think his best years are to come.
03:32You know, you only get half a sack in that first year or whatever it was.
03:35Your best years, I think, are years to come
03:37because I think that defensive linemen age gracefully, usually.
03:41They get into a rhythm as older, off a defensive lineman.
03:44They get the tricks.
03:45They get bigger.
03:45They get stronger.
03:46They get faster.
03:47I think that Mason Graham will be able to take advantage of that.
03:49What I think that he kind of threw cold water on
03:52was some of the big projects that we've been discussing.
03:55You know, Ty Simpson, when your answer starts with,
03:58eh, that I'm sorry it's a red flag
04:01when I'm trying to change my franchise in the first round.
04:03Right.
04:04And when it came to Monroe Freeling,
04:06when he says all this, it makes you think twice.
04:14I like Monroe Freeling.
04:16I mean, I actually watched him quite a bit this week.
04:19You know, he's got the size.
04:20He's almost 6'8", and he ran really, really well.
04:22He's on his feet at Georgia.
04:24He's just not very strong.
04:26I think he's only 21 years old.
04:28I mean, he's going to get a lot stronger.
04:29If you're willing to be patient with him,
04:31I think he has the chance to be really good.
04:34But if you're saying we're going to take him number six
04:35and play him right away,
04:36I think Myles Garrett might destroy his confidence.
04:40But, I mean, I do like him.
04:42It seems awfully rich, though, at six.
04:45And I do, I think too much about the conversations that we have.
04:49I'm guilty of what I just accused everybody of.
04:52I get too worked up about the conversations that we have.
04:54But I remember sitting there with Deke
04:58and seeing Myles Garrett in his rookie season
05:02get to that plane where he was like eight inches off the ground,
05:07chest completely horizontal with the ground,
05:10getting around everybody,
05:12making better linemen look not too great,
05:16making guys who have been better linemen looking not great.
05:19And I'm thinking about that going,
05:21man, Myles Garrett's at the peak of his powers right now,
05:23and I can already hear,
05:25I can see the tweets about Monroe Freeling
05:27struggling against Myles Garrett,
05:29and a lot of us going,
05:29yeah, well, one guy's a two-time NFL MVP,
05:31a defensive player of the year,
05:33and he's going to be a first-bought Hall of Famer
05:35and could be the best to ever do it.
05:36The other guy's a rookie.
05:37I think a lot of us will take that,
05:38and then a lot of us will go,
05:39yeah, Andrew Barry doesn't know how to draft offensive linemen.
05:42And we got ourselves another Jed Wills on our hand,
05:44and people are going to be freaking out,
05:45and we're going to have to have that fight.
05:48And I still can't be afraid of that
05:49because they could go ahead
05:50and they could take Spencer Finneau,
05:52and they could put him someplace
05:53and move people around,
05:55and we could be having the same argument.
05:56So I can't be afraid of the guy.
05:58I have to see how he's going to project.
06:00But when you're mentioning patience,
06:02I go, man, we live in an impatient world here.
06:04This is an impatient city,
06:06impatient franchise when it comes to this.
06:08We are trying to get this thing started now.
06:10You've got two teams
06:11that have been good at being competitive very quickly.
06:15We have another team here
06:16that really tried to light that fire.
06:18It completely blew up in their face.
06:20We're trying to save it with Myles Garrett's career.
06:22Just mentioned him.
06:23Denzel Ward.
06:24We've got to get this thing going immediately.
06:26And when you say offensive linemen,
06:28people fart at it.
06:29And then when you say offensive linemen,
06:31impatience?
06:33I'm not going to...
06:34Well, that's why...
06:35Again, you're giving me something
06:36that's impossible to sell.
06:37Fans do not have watch parties
06:39for offensive linemen.
06:41No.
06:41To get excited about.
06:42And then if you tell them,
06:43hey, that offensive lineman's not going to start week one.
06:45He's not ready.
06:46Oh, you're talking about the worst...
06:49You're talking about the worst...
06:50We just had what record?
06:52At six overall.
06:53We just had a scratching claw
06:54with two wins at the end of the year.
06:55And got out of the Fernando Mendoza sweepstakes
06:57for an offensive lineman.
06:59I understand that's going to be the sentiment
07:01from a lot of fans.
07:02I look at these guys.
07:03I look at CeCe Malinoa.
07:05I look at Spencer Fanoa.
07:06And I say each of these guys started three years.
07:09They got experience.
07:11They've been through the slings and arrows
07:13of guys who,
07:13when they started out their careers,
07:15bigger, faster, stronger than them,
07:17they met that.
07:18They exceeded that.
07:19They became better football players for it.
07:21Yes, they each have their little things.
07:24They each have their little problems that they have.
07:26You know, like one of the things
07:27you're going to hear about CeCe Malinoa
07:29is that, yeah, he leans too much.
07:31One of the things about Spencer Fanoa,
07:33one of the things that they say about him
07:35is he's a little too lean in the chest.
07:36Whatever that means.
07:37I think they want more of a barrel-chested
07:39offensive lineman.
07:40They all have their little bugaboos.
07:42But when I look at those guys,
07:44I go, man, I got experience coming out the wazoo.
07:46I got guys who know what to do with their hands.
07:48I got guys who know what to do with their feet.
07:49I got guys who are fast enough with it.
07:51And maybe Monroe Freeling will get there,
07:53but he's so damn young.
07:54And when you're saying,
07:56oh, Miles Garrett could destroy his confidence.
07:58Like, no, I don't need that.
07:59I don't want that.
08:00I don't want that to happen right now.
08:01If you wanted to take him later on, fine.
08:04And I hope that we're talking about him
08:06in the same sense,
08:06because I'm telling you right now,
08:07maybe I would kick it around
08:09if he ended up being there at 20
08:11and you wanted to make a move.
08:13I could kick it around
08:14if he ended up still there at 24.
08:16But when you take a guy at number six,
08:17it's like, that guy's going to start week one.
08:19Okay?
08:19No matter who you're playing.
08:20That guy's going to play.
08:22And if he plays,
08:23and you set him up for disaster,
08:25considering how we're seeing
08:26offensive linemen right now,
08:28it's going to be hard to get him back
08:30to where I want him to be
08:32in a bronze uniform.
08:34That's my fear.
08:35So I do need to mix that
08:37with guys who are more ready to start now.
08:39Or maybe you just think
08:40I'm talking out of my ass.
