00:21A 39-year-old Mondesir contractor was shot dead on one of his construction sites along the Orupuch main road
00:27this morning.
00:28TV6 News understands Shandon Arjun, a father of one, was standing near the site around 11.20am when a gunman
00:36of African descent with a long raster hairstyle walked up to him and fired several shots in his direction before
00:45fleeing the scene.
00:46Arjun, after being shot, stumbled back and fell to the ground where he died.
00:50Speaking to reporters at the scene of the murder today was his uncle and president of the Faisabad Chamber of
00:56Commerce, Clint Arjun.
00:57Arjun says the family believes the killing is linked to a property dispute as the victim previously mentioned a series
01:03of death threats.
01:05He did mention to me that there were some threats on his life. He did make several reports to the
01:14Lavery Police Station. I'm not sure to what extent they did anything, but the result would have shown that probably
01:22little have been done.
01:24So, this was the outcome from those threats.
01:32He says it is unfortunate such a brazen midday highway murder can occur amid a state of emergency.
01:40The shooter being able just to walk across a busy street next to the highway and be able to shoot
01:49and also get away at this point in time where we have a state of emergency.
01:59The question begs how effective is the state of emergency and what difference it is making. In my eyesight, what
02:09I'm seeing, I am not seeing a difference yet because that hit home for me.
02:17And I think that there is a lot more that has to be done.
02:23That story takes us to tonight's PeopleMeter. We ask, should the government come up with a new crime plan to
02:29deal with the current spike in murders?
