00:07Hello, I'm John Garvin, the writer and director, and I'm here with...
00:11Sam Witwer, I play Deacon St. John in Days Gone.
00:15Yeah, and we're here to talk about the Alternate Path demo.
00:19So we did two demos for you three this year.
00:23One you guys saw at the Media Showcase,
00:26and this one we showed behind closed doors on the floor at E3.
00:31And so for the first time we're releasing it online so that everybody can kind of take a look at
00:34it.
00:34And I thought I'd just talk a little bit about, you know, what the differences are,
00:38and just kind of like, just show you what we were trying to accomplish this year.
00:42Yeah, I mean, the most obvious difference so far is it's,
00:45the last one was nighttime during the rain, and this is daytime during the snow.
00:49Yeah, and that, you know, and it's not just cosmetic.
00:52And I think that's one of the things we really wanted to emphasize, you know,
00:54because this time we're showing sort of a day in the life of Deacon.
00:57You see he's on the drifter bike here.
00:59We wanted to show a little more of the bike riding and how the weather can kind of impact that.
01:04So we have this drifting mechanic, right?
01:05You see him kind of slipping and sliding around a little bit.
01:07Changes the handling.
01:10That's really interesting.
01:11Now, there were wolves there last time, John.
01:13And these wolves would pursue you down this road,
01:16and then Deacon had to turn his back, shoot a wolf, and he got clotheslined right up there, didn't he?
01:21Yeah, exactly. So this time you see that he wasn't being chased by the wolves.
01:24That's a dynamic event that can just, you know, that can happen or not.
01:29It just depends on when you're playing the game.
01:31Interesting.
01:31And this time Deacon saw the ambush, and he was able to avoid it.
01:34So he kind of comes up and around and behind them.
01:37So does weather impact whether these creatures show up or not in daytime, nighttime, all that stuff?
01:42Yeah, absolutely. So especially the Freakers, they come out, they're mostly nocturnal,
01:47but they will come out as the weather gets colder, they become stronger in the cold.
01:50Right.
01:51And so that will, you know, again, kind of change up the way the game plays.
01:54That's very, very... I kind of love that you decided to do this as a demo,
02:01to show two completely different iterations on the same exact mission in the game.
02:05Yes, exactly. So we wanted to have, you know, the job is basically the same.
02:10Deacon hears that his buddy's in trouble, rides out to save his life.
02:14And, you know, as you can see here, this is a completely different experience
02:17from what we showed in the first demo.
02:19In the first one, Deacon gets clotheslined, and it sounded very painful, by the way.
02:23Oh, that, speaking of painful, okay, so...
02:29The combat in this game is fairly brutal.
02:32John, you want to talk about that a little bit?
02:33Well, we just wanted to make it as, you know, as realistic as possible.
02:37So, yeah, we're not holding back on that at all.
02:39And, you know, Sam's done most of his own stunt work for this.
02:43And I can tell you that when we're on the performance stage,
02:45and we're capturing that stuff, we just try to keep it real, right?
02:48Right, right.
02:49Well, right, there was sort of a decision made at some point.
02:52What, we've been working...
02:54I've been on the project for, what, two or three years now?
02:56Yeah, I think three years.
02:57And so early on, I think there was a more...
03:00What were we...
03:01It was more Kurt Russell and sort of a two-fisted thing.
03:05And then it turned into, hey, let's take this quite seriously.
03:08And what that required is a lot more taking this combat stuff
03:14and showing the horror of the violence that happens.
03:17And it were this type of circumstance to take place.
03:21I mean, realism, weirdly enough, is the thing we keep going back to
03:24when it comes to the, not just the stunts, but also the performance style.
03:27I think, you know, it was very important that it doesn't seem like a bunch of actors, you know, saying
03:33lines.
03:34It was all very incidental.
03:36And, you know, we wanted the world to sort of reflect that as well.
03:38Yeah.
03:39So you saw there that, you know, Deacon broke into that emergency vehicle.
03:42What's this?
03:43And found some supplies.
03:44So this is what we're calling our survival vision.
03:45So you saw that earlier when he was looking at Manny's bike on the ground.
03:49And it's just kind of a way of seeing tracks in the world and sort of imagining what might have
03:53happened.
03:54And here I just wanted to point out that you're seeing in this part of the demo that there are
03:59freakers there.
03:59There weren't there before.
04:00Yeah.
04:00Because it wasn't snowing.
04:01It was, you know, and it was getting lighter out.
04:03It wasn't getting darker like it is.
04:05And so, you know, it changes up the way you can play through the level.
04:09And what is this?
04:10We call this the meat wall.
04:12The meat wall.
04:13Yeah.
04:13And it's not just there, you know, to, you know, make the guys who put them up to seem evil.
04:17They're there for a purpose because, again, freakers are living creatures.
04:20They eat.
04:20That's their primary thing.
04:22They want to eat.
04:23And so you hang these dead freakers up.
04:26And it, you know, and anybody, any freaker, rather than coming into their camp, like you see here, they would
04:30actually stop.
04:30Will stop and snack.
04:31Yeah, exactly.
04:32Yeah.
04:33And then the same thing with this freaker that they've hung upside down.
04:36Mm-hmm.
04:36There's a bear trap underneath it.
04:38And they use that because a freaker will come, be attracted to the meat, and then hit that trap.
04:43Interesting.
04:43Another thing you just saw, by the way, is that tin can.
04:46The tin can trap that you stumble over.
04:48Yeah, that's an alarm that the marauders will put up.
04:50And this is, again, some of the things that marauder camps just do.
04:52And you find these marauder camps throughout the world.
04:53You'll find traps like that.
04:55And then if you're careful and you're paying attention, you can avoid them.
04:58Because in the first demo, Deacon didn't avoid it and he set off that alarm.
05:01Right.
05:02Now, this is the same tactic you could have used last night.
05:04He throws the rock to get someone to lure him over and have him step in the bear trap.
05:09But this one plays out a little bit differently than last time.
05:11One of the things that struck me, and we've talked about this obviously as we've shot,
05:15but there's an effort of the other marauders to get this guy to shut up and he won't.
05:22Yeah.
05:23And so in the first demo, Deacon's heading on down the trail and you can hear that happening behind him.
05:28Right.
05:28And this time we're showing what happened.
05:29So, you know, he's watching everybody react to this poor guy trapped in the, you know, in that bear trap.
05:34And she just is like, shut up, shut up, shut up.
05:37And then just loses it and shoots the guy.
05:38Right.
05:39Right.
05:40And of course, in the meantime, Deacon, you know, is crafting a Molotov and just takes them all out.
05:43Right.
05:45Oh, boy.
05:46Ow.
05:47Ow.
05:50So, yeah, so again, it's like in the previous demo, Deacon would have gone off to the trail down to
05:55the right.
05:55This time, he's going to head this way.
05:57He follows the tracks and comes under a sniper attack.
06:02Now, let me ask you something about the survival.
06:04Okay, there's a sniper attack coming, but the survival vision.
06:09If you don't, say, upgrade your survival vision, can you miss clues?
06:13I mean, are there things that you would get if you upgraded your survival vision that would help you complete
06:18the mission better?
06:18Exactly.
06:19And you have to, you know, we have a whole skill tree and it's all tied to the experience that
06:24you can earn as you're just playing through the game and then you can upgrade those things.
06:27And what's happening here?
06:27We got a Freaker tied to a tree.
06:29Yeah, so this is another type of trap that Marauders will set. They will set, you know, they will basically
06:34chain Freakers to the perimeter of their camps and they use them as kind of an alarm system.
06:38Mm-hmm.
06:39And then that, you know, you saw that Marauder there, he was just tormenting the poor Freaker and then so
06:43Deacon kind of takes advantage of that.
06:46Well, and you think for a moment that Deacon is the guy, he's sort of helping the Freaker by, you
06:51know, getting the guy that taunted him.
06:53No, no, and then he's going to take the Freaker out right afterward.
06:55Exactly.
06:56And this is a bit of a silent sniping using the crossbow?
07:00Yeah, so this whole sequence at the end plays out very differently.
07:03In the first demo you saw Deacon use a swarm.
07:05He weaponized a swarm, lured them into the camp and then they kind of did the work for him.
07:10There's no swarm in this run through.
07:11Right.
07:11So the player really has to go in and use what we're calling our strategic sandbox combat.
07:16And that's just, you know, stealth mechanics and setting and using traps, whole arsenal of weapons.
07:21You see there's a variety of weapons that Deacon's going to use through this, including the crossbow.
07:25You know, he crafts his own bolts.
07:28And, you know, he's got to figure out how to get up to Manny just, you know, using his combat
07:32skills.
07:33Right.
07:33Instead of doing it strategically.
07:34So straightening out, those bonfires, were those there in the previous demo?
07:38No, they weren't, right?
07:39So that's another big difference is that if you come here during the day, you know, it's like in the
07:43Media Showcase demo there was like kind of a fight club thing going on.
07:46Right, they were.
07:47They were punching each other and everybody was just sort of getting into it.
07:49Nobody's really paying attention to what's going on.
07:51And now it's getting dark and it's cold out.
07:53So, you know, they've built these bonfires.
07:55So, you know, and again, it's just, it's not just a cosmetic change in the way the.
07:59Well, it's cold, right?
08:00Yeah, it's because it's cold.
08:01You have to build some.
08:02So it changes the way the Marauders behave in the level.
08:07Mm-hmm.
08:08That's very, again, this is part of the reason why I love that you did this as a demo because
08:12the behavior of all of these things, not just the Freakers, but the Marauders, everything, there's a logic to it.
08:19You can track why they're doing the things that they're doing.
08:23And you can use it to your advantage in the gameplay.
08:26That's kind of what I like about this so much.
08:29And that's really what we wanted to showcase this year is that it's an open world game.
08:34And, you know, everything you see around here, and again, we're only playing this two different ways.
08:39You saw that waterfall way up there off in the distance.
08:42There's a bridge that goes in front of that.
08:43If you had a sniper rifle and enough ammunition, you could have driven your bike all the way up there.
08:48There's trails that go all the way up there.
08:49And you could have used your sniper rifle to take out this entire camp because it would have taken them
08:53a while to figure out where the shots were coming from and to get to you.
08:56So, you know, that's a different way to play.
08:58There's another way to play it, by the way, where you could have just stealthed in through the entire camp
09:02if you had the skills to do it.
09:04And you could have just taken everybody out silently or almost everybody.
09:08And then you could have gotten up to where Manny's being held using a different route and, you know, just
09:13stealth killed that guy.
09:14There's no reason that you have to come in and run and gun it like Deacon is doing here.
09:18Hey, how scarce is ammunition? Because I see him switching from a bunch of weapons.
09:23And I, when we saw this demo, when I, when I came in and saw 83, one of the things
09:28that I, that I really enjoyed was I was sitting next to you and the driver was playing the game.
09:34And at some point I saw you shift in your chair and you leaned forward and I heard you say,
09:38oh man, uh oh.
09:39And I'm like, whoa, what's going on? He's like, he's gonna get killed.
09:41I'm like, whoa, oh!
09:42And I leaned forward and I was like, oh, I guess there's some real danger.
09:46And one of the things was that he was running out of ammunition.
09:49And he was trying to go pick up ammo from the dead marauders.
09:52He was looking for ammo, yeah.
09:54But he was under fire.
09:55I've seen, so when we were in E3 we had a whole team with us and everybody played it slightly
09:58differently.
09:59So it just shows you that it's not scripted at all.
10:00Yeah.
10:01Um.
10:02And then this rager bear.
10:04Oh boy.
10:04Yeah, the infected bear.
10:05The infected bear.
10:06That's, yeah, yeah.
10:09That's not what you want to see.
10:11Well, that, we thought that would be, we thought that would be a good way to end the demo is
10:14to show that it's just one, for Deacon's life, it's just one darn thing after another.
10:19After another, yeah.
10:19Right?
10:19You're going to save your buddy, you get clotheslined, you get attacked by wolves, or, you know, you think you're
10:26finally done, you rescued your, you know, you've gone through all this stuff and then suddenly
10:30rager bear.
10:31Right.
10:32Well, as, as you've said to me, it's not just about exploring an open world as it is the open
10:37world coming after you.
10:39The open world seeking you out, trying to.
10:41Yeah, exactly.
10:42That's our tagline.
10:44Um, in Days Gone you don't have to go seeking out trouble, the world comes before you.
10:48Trouble's looking for you.
10:49Alright, Sam, thanks a lot.
10:50Thanks, John.
10:51It's been fun.
10:52And, uh, I hope you guys enjoy the demo and, uh, we'll talk more about it soon.
10:57Uh.
11:05PlayStation.
11:06Grazie a tutti.
