Demo per l'E3 2018 di Concrete Genie.
Trascrizione
00:00Welcome back, everybody. PlayStation Live from E3 2018. Justin and Meredith here, along with Dom, Jeff and Arjun from Pixel
00:08Opus. Thank you guys so much for being here.
00:10It's good to be here.
00:11Thank you.
00:11So we are here to take a look, a new look, at Concrete Genie, which got announced a while ago.
00:17We haven't seen a ton of gameplay yet. We've seen a lot of cool video clips. We've heard some beautiful
00:21music coming out of it.
00:23But now we are here to do a gameplay demo. Let's hop right in and take a look.
00:28Start it up.
00:30So would one of you like to just give us a quick explanation of what we're seeing here as we
00:35come into this demo?
00:36Well, so Concrete Genie is a game about a boy called Ash who can bring his paintings to life. I
00:41think we talked about that at PSX back in December.
00:43And we did a bit of the demo for how the painting works. And at E3 here, we're going to
00:48start showing how more of the gameplay loop is coming together.
00:52And so you're trying to revitalize this town called Denska that's had an environmental disaster before it.
00:58And your magical paint can actually bring it back to life and bring the light back to this town.
01:03And so that's what we're going to see after this little cutscene introduces the bullies.
01:08Okay, great. Let's take a look.
01:13I love the depth of the color in it. I mean, I know there is a painting element to it,
01:16but it really does look like an oil painting in a lot of ways.
01:20Wow. Thank you.
01:21Oh, great. Yeah, we really want to make sure that everything feels like it's handcrafted.
01:26We put a lot of attention to detail in everything in the world.
01:30Yeah, it shows.
01:31Great.
01:38So these guys are going to be coming back later to make it difficult for you to paint throughout the
01:43town.
01:45Making a daring escape.
01:46Yeah.
01:54So now this is the bit that we've built in to kind of show how the painting mechanics work.
01:58Okay.
01:59And so Arjun's going to just kind of take us through the tutorial.
02:02So use the motion controller on the DualShock.
02:04Oh, okay.
02:04So it's super intuitive and really easy to use.
02:07And then the R2 trigger paints whatever you have selected.
02:11It looks magical already. Look at that.
02:13Yeah, we've worked really hard to make it as intuitive and as fun and as joyous as we possibly can.
02:19And we want to make sure that anybody who plays it feels like they could be an artist with this
02:23game because that's like a really important part.
02:25I definitely am not. I'm not an artist.
02:27So I will put this to the test.
02:29Well, and the really fun thing as well, just in this morning seeing people play the game for the first
02:34time,
02:34which is, you know, obviously a scary moment for us because we've been working so hard to kind of deliver
02:40that promise that anybody can make something that looks great with this game.
02:44And sure enough, you know, everyone's painting very differently, but it always looks beautiful and they feel like they did
02:49it, which is really, really important.
02:50So good reactions so far.
02:52Yeah, so far really good reactions.
02:53Yeah, we want every paint stroke to feel like it's almost like hand animated and comes to life.
02:59And Arjun's one of our engineers, so he's not part of the art department, but a very creative guy.
03:06But you can see he's able to paint with ease.
03:10Yeah, yeah.
03:11And it's fun to see people paint in different ways.
03:13Sometimes they want to paint by, you know, putting a hundred suns or rainbows or so you can paint in
03:20a very abstract way or be very delicate about your paintings also.
03:26Yeah.
03:27And this is another key component.
03:29So it's not just making landscapes.
03:31You can make your own creatures as well.
03:33Okay.
03:33And they have a lot of gameplay purpose depending on how you paint them.
03:37The color gives them innate abilities as well.
03:40So the red creatures have fire abilities and they can help you solve puzzles.
03:43And we're going to see a bit of that coming up later as well.
03:45And then depending on all the attachments that you add on to them, it gives them different personalities as well.
03:51Oh, okay.
03:51And so that's a kind of fun thing to discover.
03:53Kind of like those antlers that he's putting on.
03:55Yeah.
03:56And you can, again, you can add on to it however you want to.
03:59And then you get to bring them to life.
04:03And start making this cast of friends to kind of explore the world with you.
04:09And once the creature is brought to life, you can no longer edit him or he's really alive within the
04:16game.
04:16Ah, okay.
04:17Good to know.
04:18And these lights that you see on the walls, this is how we kind of quantify painting in the world.
04:24Because we don't want to judge what you're actually creating.
04:28So there's no, the game doesn't sit there and say, hey, you're painting well, you're painting badly.
04:32We just have these lights up.
04:34And as you paint, it turns the lights on.
04:37And so when you've brought all the lights back to life, that's when you've completed this section of the world
04:41as well.
04:41Okay.
04:42So you kind of have an idea instead of just being set loose in this giant empty world and not
04:46really knowing where to go.
04:47It gives you a little bit of direction that way.
04:49Now, can you paint on any of the surfaces in the game or are there only specific surfaces where the
04:53paint will work?
04:54You can paint on any of the walls anywhere in the world.
04:57Wow.
04:58And, you know, that was another hope was that everybody's game would look different, which is really important.
05:03So you have this kind of more custom, unique experience.
05:06And sure enough, you know, everybody's games that we've seen playing the demo today, completely different.
05:11And all the creatures are completely different as well.
05:15Even how you paint the creature changes their animation.
05:18So if you paint the creatures horizontally, they act more like animals.
05:22They'll howl and scratch at the ground.
05:25Wow.
05:26Yeah.
05:27And this is how they communicate with you.
05:29So we wanted to make sure that the relationship that you have with your creature has some depth to it.
05:33Yeah, yeah.
05:34And they'll ask you for things.
05:35In this case, he wants a fire pit.
05:37And as far as the creatures are concerned, you're just making a home for them whenever you're painting these landscapes.
05:42And so now he wants some dandelions.
05:44And once you do the things that they ask, they'll start giving you things in return as well.
05:49And so when the creatures are happy with you like this, they can actually charge up your brush.
05:53Super paint.
05:54And give you super paint.
05:55Yeah.
05:56Thanks, pal.
05:58So what's the super paint do?
05:59Well, so as I mentioned earlier on, there's this environmental disaster that's kind of befallen this fishing town,
06:05which is why everybody's moved away.
06:06And this darkness that covers the walls can only be burnt off by your supercharged paint.
06:12Hmm.
06:13And it clears it off in this very magical fashion.
06:16Wow.
06:16But super paint is also kind of painting writ large.
06:19So it's kind of overcharged.
06:21Everything's bigger, brighter, larger when you paint with super paint as well.
06:24Okay.
06:24So since we've completed one out of three zones, is that kind of what the progression is going to look
06:29like?
06:30Yes.
06:30Per level.
06:31And then you move to a different level.
06:32Absolutely.
06:33Gotcha.
06:33And when you've finished all the different zones in the level, the masterpiece beacon is illuminated.
06:39And there's a special location with each level where you get to go and paint a huge masterpiece.
06:45Oh, cool.
06:45And that's how you kind of wrap up each level.
06:47That feels, I feel some echoes of Entwined in there.
06:50Because it was kind of a similar thing where at the end you got to just kind of like go
06:53nuts and form.
06:54Yeah, that's right.
06:55And actually it's the same button gesture to activate super paint as it was to turn into the dragon.
07:00Gotcha.
07:01And Entwined as well.
07:02Yeah.
07:02Now are the creatures that you created in Zone 1, are they then contained to the world of Zone 1?
07:07Or do the creatures follow you into other levels?
07:10They don't.
07:11They're actually landlocked.
07:12It's part of the level design.
07:14And so there's different places where you can paint and create these creatures throughout the world.
07:18But they stay there.
07:19And you know, we thought about, do we want them to come with you the whole time?
07:23And actually it's nice to miss them, you know.
07:26And when you come back to them, they're happy to see you.
07:28And so you kind of remember where they are.
07:30And they'll always help you when you go back to them as well.
07:33So we've actually found that that's been a better balance.
07:35Okay, over here.
07:36So that was a really cool example of how the painting interacts with the world and kind of opens up
07:41pathways for you.
07:42You kind of burn down that door there.
07:44Yeah.
07:45That was his firepower.
07:46That was his fire abilities, yeah.
07:47What are some other ways that the paintings can interact with the environment?
07:51So as you progress through the different levels, you unlock different colors.
07:56And those different creatures have other abilities.
07:58And we've tried to make them very intuitive and elemental.
08:00So yellow creatures have electricity.
08:03And I'm not going to give away too many of the other ones, but you'll unlock them as you go
08:06through the game.
08:08Now we just got a prompt about escaping bullies on this level.
08:12So they're about to come and start hounding and making life difficult for Ash.
08:17So these are the bad guys in the game.
08:18And you saw them in the cutscene earlier on.
08:21And so as you know, the game has kind of opened up into this mini open neighborhood.
08:26Yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:26And they're landlocked as well.
08:28So they stay at the street level.
08:30But the rooftops is Ash's space.
08:31And so he has a kind of agile platforming move set.
08:36And he can clamber up to the rooftops and get up there and get away from them.
08:41And try and avoid them and lure them around the level.
08:44So that's the thing that's putting pressure on you is you're trying to cover this space with your artwork.
08:48Let's see.
08:49And what was that that he just got there?
08:50He just found a brush.
08:52So before this chunk of gameplay, the bullies have stolen his sketchbook.
08:57And they've ripped all the pages out and scattered them into the wind.
09:00I remember that from the reveal trailer, I think.
09:02Yes, that's right.
09:02And so they're kind of floating around as well, gives you something to chase.
09:05But you get this cool gameplay reward every time you catch one, which is a new painting technique.
09:10Oh, cool.
09:10Yeah.
09:11And do those affect the gameplay in tangible ways as well?
09:15Or are they more just kind of stylish?
09:18They do because the creatures really want you to paint specific things at certain points.
09:22So there's a handful of brushes that you have to find in each level.
09:26Okay, okay.
09:26And then at the masterpiece painting at the end, you'll get to use all of them to bring to life
09:32the final destination.
09:34So he wants a cherry tree brush, which Arjun has thankfully just found.
09:39You just paint it right there for him.
09:41Yeah.
09:41You can see we have over three levels of animation when you paint a tree.
09:47And we really want to give the person the feeling that it's coming alive, like a moving illustration.
09:53And when the bullies come around your artwork, it actually changes.
09:58It freezes and loses all its color.
10:02Sort of a manifestation of how Ash feels when he's being bullied.
10:07I see.
10:07So you have to repaint all those places when the bullies come through?
10:10No.
10:11So when they leave the area, it comes back to life.
10:14It's meant to reflect his mood, but it's also the fact that they can't see it as alive because they
10:18don't have the imagination to see it.
10:20So when they're around, it completely kind of dies and desaturates.
10:24And the creatures get frozen as well.
10:26I see.
10:27I predict that that will have some gameplay implications in terms of the puzzles and all that.
10:32Absolutely.
10:37So that painting mechanic is really robust, but also seems very accessible.
10:42How many iterations did you go through before you landed on the version of that that felt just right?
10:51We've had several attempts at getting to the place we're at now.
10:56And it wasn't until we let you really freely paint with a cursor that we felt that we'd answered that
11:01kind of player expectation
11:02and that fantasy of making you feel like an artist.
11:06And so, you know, that was our third kind of style at it.
11:09And then we've had about a year and a half since then to have it manifest into the game that
11:13you see right now.
11:15Now, I know the music is really important, but it sounds to me, and I know it's a little loud
11:19here in the convention center,
11:20but it sounds to me as if each brush stroke has a different tone associated with it.
11:25That's right.
11:26So this is something that we've been working on this year as well, just to help encourage every player to
11:31keep painting.
11:32Each brush has its own melodic instrument attached to it.
11:35And so kind of like Entwined as well, we care deeply about our dynamic soundtrack.
11:40And Sam Marshall, our audio director and composer, has designed this amazing system where each brush has its own sound,
11:47and it plays in the same key as the soundtrack, and it's perfectly in time with the music as well.
11:53So when you're painting, you feel like you're contributing to the soundtrack as well.
11:56It seems like quite the engineering feat as well.
11:58Yeah.
12:00That's awesome.
12:01I mean, music is so important.
12:03It really is.
12:03Creating a really emotional gaming experience, I think.
12:06We've designed levels within the world where you can just kind of sit and paint and spend time composing whatever
12:14you'd like.
12:15And it's really nice because you can have the action part, but you can also take time to make really
12:21beautiful little compositions for yourself.
12:23Right.
12:24Yeah.
12:25Yeah.
12:26And yeah, on the note of the music, I remember there was a song that we released from the, what
12:31was it?
12:31The PGW trailer?
12:32Yeah, that's right.
12:33From Paris.
12:33Yeah.
12:34And that was such a beautiful song.
12:36I'm really looking forward to hearing more of the music in the game.
12:38Absolutely.
12:39We're so lucky to have Sam on board, and he's been with us since the very beginning of the project,
12:43which we think makes a huge difference.
12:45Yeah.
12:45Having somebody representing and speaking about the audio from the very initial design is what enables us to have it
12:53so thoroughly integrated into the gameplay.
12:55And Sam contributes to the design of the game as well, which is great.
13:03And you can see the creature reacting to everything that Arjun's painting as well.
13:07So they're kind of like an in-game audience for you.
13:09Oh, yeah.
13:10And they'll try and kind of, you know, they'll pick up the dandelions and blow them or eat the apples,
13:15hide behind the trees or sit down by the campfire and things like that.
13:19Do the creatures interact with each other as well as interacting with Ash?
13:22They will.
13:22Yeah.
13:22And as the game progresses and the puzzles get more complicated, you might need creatures with different sets of abilities
13:29to combine and solve things as well.
13:32Yeah.
13:33Well, yeah, I can see we've added a fair bit of color to this dreary landscape.
13:38Yeah.
13:40Cool.
13:41I think we're coming up on time here.
13:43But is there anything else, any other cool stuff that we wanted to check out before we let you go?
13:47I think that's all the basics that we wanted to cover, yeah.
13:50Okay, great, cool.
13:51Any final message for the fans watching at home or for our fans out in the audience here?
13:57Well, we just can't wait for people to get their hands on it.
14:00And thank you for being patient as well while we're finishing the game, which is great.
14:04Great, cool.
14:05Are you talking about a release window or anything like that yet?
14:07Not just yet.
14:09Not just yet.
14:09But TBD.
14:10Well, you're making excellent progress.
14:12Meredith, anything else you wanted to add?
14:14No, I'll be waiting for that TBD notice to go out.
14:17Right.
14:18Cool.
14:18Well, that is Concrete Genie.
14:20It is coming to PlayStation 4.
14:23Thank you all so much for joining us.
14:25The game looks just positively beautiful.
14:28Thank you.
14:28It looks fantastic.
14:29Thanks for having us.
14:30Keep an eye out for that.
14:30We'll have more news at PlayStation Blog as we learn more.
14:33But stay tuned because we will have more coming up at PlayStation Live from E3 2018.
14:38PlayStation 4.
14:42You don't know why you can but distribution.
14:45Grazie a tutti
