00:03Welcome back, everybody. It's PlayStation Live from E3 2017, and we are joined by a very special guest, Mr. Shuhei
00:10Yoshida.
00:11Hello, hello.
00:12Thank you for being here. Always such a pleasure.
00:13This is a fun part of my E3. I always look forward to joining your show.
00:17I mean, E3, the whole thing is really fun, but I mean, I appreciate the kind words. Thank you very
00:21much.
00:22So, yeah, we're here to talk about Patapon Remastered, which is coming to PlayStation 4 this summer.
00:26Yep. Did you know that this is actually the 10th anniversary?
00:30Oh, yeah, okay.
00:322017. It came out in 2007. It's been 10 years since Patapon first came out.
00:35Right, right, right. The first one was 10 years ago. I was actually working here in the U.S.
00:40Oh, really?
00:40Occasionally, I was visiting the studio in Japan, and I was showing this game, and I was like, what is
00:46this? Crazy, you know.
00:49Do you remember the first time you ever saw it?
00:51Well, yeah, it was in the studio in Japan when the game was early in development.
00:55Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. The art style and the gameplay was so totally new. I was blown away when I
01:03saw it.
01:04Yeah, it's got these really unique visuals, these adorable characters, the little Patapons, the rhythmic gameplay.
01:11It's so fun. It was always really appealing to me. On the note of the character designs, though,
01:15I want to make note of a special item you can pick up at the PlayStation Gear store starting right
01:22now.
01:23Check it out. Malik's here to model this new Patapons shirt that you can see right here.
01:28Go to gear.playstation.com, and you can pick that up right now. Looking good, man.
01:36Awesome.
01:36It sure makes me look good. It's the film.
01:39Nice, man. So, yeah, gear.playstation.com. It's available right now. Go pick it up.
01:43So, yeah, Patapons is such an adorable game. Do you know if there were ever any, like, earlier prototypes?
01:50Did you ever see any other fun stuff? You have, like, really inside access to this kind of stuff,
01:55so I won't cry you for all these details.
01:56Yeah, so I had, yeah, the answer is I did, but I don't remember.
02:02I just remember, you know, I was so amazed, you know, when I saw it, and it was already playable,
02:09you know, early in the development, but, you know, there are so many cute, interesting games made during the days
02:18by Japan Studio for PSP, so it was really fun to visit them to see what they are working on.
02:25Yeah, and then Patapons 2, Patapons 3 came out. I know people have been asking for a long time
02:29for a new Patapons game. I'm so excited to get to go back and play Patapons Remastered on PS4
02:35with these beautiful new graphics.
02:37So what is new about the game, and what's remastered from the game?
02:40Yeah, so this is, you know, you can see this beautiful 4K graphics, and the game is actually very, very
02:47true
02:47to the original. So it plays, and the music is the same, character is the same, game system is the
02:54same.
02:54However, this gorgeous graphics was really, really created from the original artwork, you know, from the game.
03:00I see that they even brought back the mechanic where there's kind of a border around the outside of the
03:05screen.
03:05Might be difficult to see if you're not looking really closely for it, but it kind of has the rhythm
03:10of the music
03:11to help you time the hits, because obviously the whole game is based around this rhythm mechanic
03:16of constantly pushing the buttons in rhythm to make the little Patapons army do different things.
03:22Yeah, game is already playable from the beginning to end, and the team is making sure to work with Japan
03:29Studios,
03:29because the original creators are still there, to make sure the game plays and feels like the, you know,
03:36real original with, you know, advanced graphics.
03:39Yeah. Meredith, did you ever get a chance to play a Patapon?
03:41No, so that's why I'm so excited that it's coming out, because I never owned a PSP,
03:45so I never actually got a chance to play the original Patapon, and now it's coming to my PS4,
03:49so I'm so excited that you guys brought it back.
03:51Well, get ready to have the music stuck in your head for the next 10 years,
03:55because basically my, like, half of my life, I've been walking around going,
04:02I was, okay, so I was telling people last night that I was going to do this interview today,
04:06and everyone immediately, it was like, Patapata, Patapon, like, it's so catchy.
04:11Yeah, I was with Greg Mia yesterday on his show, and he was asking about when is it coming out,
04:17when is it coming out, and I was like, oh, we are taking time, making sure the game is polished,
04:22and he said, if anything different, I can tell.
04:24So what do you think, Yoshida-san, what do you think made this game so appealing to so many people,
04:30and made it such a beloved classic?
04:33I mean, it's really kind of an odd combination of, like, a kind of, not quite a platformer,
04:38but kind of like a rhythm action type game.
04:40Yeah, so it's, you know, different from other music games.
04:45You can play on your own pace, and it's very accessible, anyone can play,
04:50but still it has a, you know, very deep game system that you can learn and advance.
04:57So I think that allowed people to play and come back for many times,
05:02and that made the people to become, you know, fans of the series.
05:06It's been a really good last few months for these types of music action games.
05:11We had Parappa the Rapper Remastered came out, which was a huge favorite of mine.
05:15Loco Roco Remastered just came out, and now we're rounding it out with Loco, sorry, with Patapon.
05:19Yeah, I'm really excited.
05:21This is, I mean, this is so exciting.
05:23And this year is great with the remasters, like, you know, we just launched Wipeout Omega Correctional.
05:30Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:30It's amazing, beautiful on, you know, 4K, native 4K with HDR, and Crash Bandicoot is coming.
05:37I was the original producer of the Crash games on PS1,
05:40so I couldn't believe I was able to play all three games on PS4.
05:46And the developer, Vicarious Visions, did a great job of making it much more easier
05:51for the very first Crash Bandicoot because it was so hard.
05:54Did you see the guy in the Crash Bandicoot costume out there?
05:57Oh, yeah, yeah, I saw.
05:58He's out there doing dance.
05:59Actually, I took a photo with him.
06:01Oh, nice.
06:01He was hanging out at the game spot.
06:04So what are some of the strategies involved in this game?
06:06If I'm going to pick this up, what do I need to know?
06:09Yeah, you need to know the combination of buttons.
06:12And it starts very easy, you know, at the beginning.
06:15So you just learn, you know, pom, pom, pom, pom, pom, pom, pom, you know, that, you know,
06:19advanced characters.
06:20And you can build up your library, vocabulary of the rhythm, you know, combination.
06:26So, you know, anyone can play.
06:28Great.
06:28Cool.
06:29So this is obviously a very music-oriented game.
06:32We were talking about all the music games coming out.
06:35I'm, like, actually a really big fan of music in games.
06:39Sometimes more so than even, like, the visuals or the gameplay.
06:41I think I'm kind of in the minority there.
06:43But I think music is such an important part of games in general,
06:46especially something like this, right?
06:48Yeah.
06:48Yeah, like, actually, in May, for the first time in Japan,
06:54we had a classic concert using all the music created by, you know,
07:00Japan Studios games.
07:02Oh, wow.
07:02And Patpon was one of them.
07:03and there's a live, you know, live show of drum, you know, drumming.
07:10And it's just so awesome.
07:12And I think we filmed the concert and we are making some, you know, video out of the concert.
07:19It was so great.
07:20You know, we have music from all the, you know, weather sounds games and the Patpon and the Parappa and
07:28the Axe a lot.
07:29And we will make it available for PSN users in Japan.
07:35So when you have a chance and check it out, it's beautiful.
07:39So I agree with you.
07:40Music is so important.
07:42Yeah.
07:42When people might forget the gameplay, but they remember the music.
07:47Yeah, I picked up the Parappa soundtrack when that came out because I love the music.
07:52I have so many fond memories of all the music in that game.
07:54Yep.
07:55Have you seen any other interesting things around the show floor?
07:58It's day three.
07:59Yeah.
08:00You've had some time to walk around and check some of the stuff out.
08:02What are some of the highlights that you've seen?
08:03Oh, yeah.
08:04So it's a bit, you know, harder year to walk around because there are so many fans here.
08:10And it's great.
08:10A lot of people have been saying hi to you.
08:12I like the energy and the passion.
08:14It feels a little bit of, you know, PSX.
08:17Yeah.
08:18Yeah.
08:18And so what I did was, you know, when I had a chance, I stayed in my hotel room and
08:25had
08:25this, you know, your show, you know, running on TV.
08:29Thank you.
08:29That's wonderful.
08:30And checking out, you know, because it's great that you bring in developers and let them
08:34talk about.
08:35So one game I really liked was some 2D looking action RPG.
08:41It's called some, some sword, ditto.
08:44The swords of ditto.
08:45Yes.
08:46Yeah.
08:46Yeah.
08:46That really was, it's very.
08:48We had bids on the show talking about it.
08:51I believe it was yesterday.
08:52Yeah.
08:52Yeah.
08:52Yeah.
08:53Yeah.
08:53I was watching the show and I was like, I have to play this game.
08:56Yeah.
08:57It looks really cool.
08:58Yeah.
08:58And I know we were just talking about Moss over there, the VR game.
09:01Yeah.
09:01That's a beautiful, you know, charming game.
09:05Like, one of the colleagues from Japan, the PR person from SIE Japan was with me during
09:13the media showcase and she was like, I love Moss.
09:19Yeah.
09:19It's beautiful.
09:20With all the game, you know, many games with guns and the very serious looking guys and
09:25this charming, cute, you know, character, you know, it's, it's great.
09:30So if there's one thing you want to try and get done, we're almost at the end of the show.
09:34Yeah.
09:34But is there one thing that you're going to try and go check out before the show closes?
09:39Well, I haven't gone to the North Pole.
09:43Yeah.
09:44So I tried to get there.
09:45It's wild over there.
09:46Yeah.
09:46Oh, okay.
09:47There's a lot going on.
09:49Yeah.
09:49So, you know, I managed to walk around Nintendo booths and they are so kind.
09:54They invited us to check out.
09:55So I tried to get into Microsoft booths.
09:58Yeah.
09:58Yeah.
09:59There's a lot going on this year.
10:00It's a huge, huge year for games.
10:02Yes.
10:02So, yeah, anything else that you wanted to say about Patapon?
10:06Any fun stories you want to share before we let you go?
10:08Yeah.
10:08So the, we are having a lot of fun bringing back these, you know, old Vila franchise and
10:15many, many people asked me and asked our people to bring back these, you know, series.
10:21And unfortunately, we are not releasing a new game.
10:25However, for people like you who have never played Patapon before, we are using the latest
10:30PS technology on PS4 to make it realize in a much bigger screen and preserving the original
10:37title.
10:38So, please check it out when, you know, it comes out this summer.
10:43And we are continuing to listen to the fans to bring back, you know, whatever they tell
10:50us to consider.
10:52And the one big game that we just announced this E3, you know, in terms of remastered,
10:57Shadow of the Colossus.
10:58Oh, yes.
10:59And that's one of the, you know, titles that people really, really wanted to revisit.
11:04That looks incredible.
11:04Yeah.
11:05Everything is recreated.
11:07All the asset has been recreated from the scratch to use the latest technology.
11:15It's so beautiful.
11:17And anyone who have never tried Shadow of the Colossus, this is the definitive version.
11:24I'm a bit ashamed to say that I never finished Shadow of the Colossus.
11:27Now is your chance.
11:28So, now I finally have a chance to go back and play it with these gorgeous new graphics.
11:33That tiny video that we got, that little morsel of footage that we got, looks so good.
11:39I can't wait for it.
11:40Cool.
11:41Well, Yoshida-san, thank you so much for joining us.
11:43Thank you.
11:44And, yeah, we are coming to the close of PlayStation Live from E3, but we're not quite done yet.
11:50So, please stay tuned.
11:51We'll have more coming up.
11:58We'll have more coming up.
