00:03Hello, welcome back to PlayStation Live at E3 2018.
00:08I'm Rob Pearson. Joining us on stage we have John Garvin, Jeff Ross and Chris Reese from Ben's Studio.
00:14Thank you so much for joining us, guys. Absolute pleasure to have you with us.
00:17Also on the sofa we've got Ramon Russell and we have got playable Days Gone.
00:23The first thing I want to ask you is the Pacific Northwest. Why did you choose that as a setting?
00:29Dude, it's really nice. It's more about the high desert than the Pacific Northwest.
00:33So for those of you who don't know, Eastern Oregon, which is like 90% of the state, is high
00:37desert.
00:38And that really means extreme, extreme weather, extreme terrain, and a lot of variety, density in a very, very small
00:45space.
00:47Fantastic. Can we have a little play of the game here? Have we got it going?
00:53Just a little bit of loading.
00:55Still loading, okay.
00:56Yeah, so the demo we're going to play for you today is called You Got a Death Wish.
01:00And it's one of the things we really want to show off is how it kind of tries to marry
01:04a linear narrative experience in a dynamic open world.
01:08So it's a combination of the two things.
01:10So at Ben's Studio, we've always done narrative-driven games.
01:12Sure.
01:13And we're really excited to be able to bring the production values.
01:16You can see we have really powerful cut scenes.
01:18and then it goes into gameplay in a way that sets up the open world.
01:23Awesome.
01:24Awesome.
01:24And what could you tell us about our main character, Deacon St. John?
01:28Like, what was the inspiration behind this character?
01:31Well, a few things.
01:32He's broken, so you saw from a couple of trailers that we've released that he's lost someone and it's scarred
01:39him in a way.
01:40And it's like Jeff would like to say, everybody loses people, you know, in these kinds of end-of-the
01:45-world scenarios.
01:45So what's particular about Deacon, though, is that he was an ex-member of an outlaw motorcycle club and therefore
01:52he has a love of the open road.
01:54He has a love of motorcycles.
01:55Yeah.
01:55There's a sense of brotherhood and you can see that here in these scenes with him and his best friend
01:59Boozer.
02:00And so it was that combination that really sort of drew us to this particular character.
02:06Right.
02:06We're going to continue to learn about him as you're playing the game, correct?
02:09About him and his backstory and why he is the way he is.
02:14I mean, the bike is very important, right, as well?
02:18Yeah, we almost consider the bike to be another character.
02:21Yeah.
02:21Because you only get one and you're constantly upgrading it, you're constantly trying to repair it, you need to keep
02:27it refueled.
02:29And if you lose it, you've got to go find it and you can't whistle for a new one.
02:34You can't whistle for a new one, right?
02:35Like a horse.
02:36Yeah, the refueling mechanic is a huge game design choice.
02:40I really, really like that.
02:40Can you talk more about how important it's going to be to be able to find fuel?
02:43Get along just fine.
02:46Sorry.
02:47So the refueling mechanic, and actually you have to find gas to keep your bike going.
02:51It's a mechanic we haven't really seen done to this extent before.
02:54Can you talk more about that and how it changes the gameplay?
02:58Well, like in this demo, one of the things that Jeff's taking the run and gun approach.
03:02So we like to call it sandbox combat.
03:08So basically what you can do is you can run and gun, you can stealth your way through, and your
03:12goal here is to get and find a bike part, right?
03:14So you're here actually for kind of a trivial reason.
03:17You've risked your friend's life to come and get a part for your bike.
03:19And so that shows a little bit about Deacon's character.
03:22But then as you watch Jeff play through this wide linear sequence, he can play it a hundred different ways.
03:29And if you watch other people play, you'll see that, okay, they didn't take this route.
03:32They didn't stop and check the trunk of this police car.
03:35And those are kind of like our treasure chests throughout the world.
03:37So you're always on the lookout for those because that's how you're going to find ammo and health kits.
03:42And then you're seeing one of our stealth mechanics here.
03:45If you're quiet, if you crouch walk and you walk up behind an enemy, then you have the opportunity for
03:50a stealth takedown.
03:52And what can you tell us about the Freakers?
03:55Because they're quite unique.
03:57We've seen a fair few undead enemies in video games before.
04:00What makes the Freakers unique?
04:01And what was your decision making behind making them the way they are?
04:06They're alive.
04:08They're alive.
04:09Yeah.
04:09They're not zombies.
04:11They're alive.
04:12And so that sounds trivial, but it's not because it basically means we have a full day-night cycle in
04:17the game.
04:17Right.
04:17And they have things that they do.
04:20There's an ecosystem.
04:21And they have to eat.
04:22They have to drink.
04:23They have to hibernate.
04:24And so you will find them like in this scenario, you'll see that there's some nests.
04:29And Freakers build nests for reasons you discover while you're playing the game.
04:33And then you can take those nest zones out in order to free up fast travel routes.
04:37So, you know, it becomes part of the metagame.
04:40But Freakers are evolving.
04:42They're living creatures who have been affected by this virus.
04:46And there's several different types.
04:48In some of our trailers you've seen, we've shown the Screamer, which is a female that can have sort of
04:53alarm system that will bring in more Freakers.
04:55We have the affected bear, so it affects animals.
04:59In our last trailer we showed...
05:00Mountain lion and the crows.
05:01Right?
05:01So you have, yeah.
05:02So, you know, so it's just, it's a wide variety of challenges for the player.
05:07And like we said, the world comes for you.
05:08And that's part of it, is that these creatures are always after you.
05:11And at night they're stronger.
05:12Yeah.
05:12If it starts raining, they become stronger.
05:14But we've seen him, I've seen in previous trailers, a Deacon actually utilizing the Freakers as a weapon against his
05:21enemy as well.
05:21So you can actually use them to your advantage as well, as well as the environment itself.
05:26Yeah, absolutely.
05:27We call it the Freako system.
05:28So in this scenario there's not a lot of chance for that.
05:31But if he were fighting marauders or rippers, then he could find a nearby swarm.
05:35It's an open world, so you can just explore.
05:37You can find other tools like, you know, like a swarm or a Freaker Bear, and you can bring them
05:43into an enemy camp and watch the, you know, watch the sort of mayhem that happens.
05:48I guess you've got to be careful, though.
05:49You don't get kind of sucked into it.
05:52I like this gun, you guys.
05:53So you have melee combat and you have gun combat.
05:56Can you talk about how you designed and balanced for both?
06:01The, you know, it's like so many different scenarios require the player to determine how they want to play it,
06:08right?
06:08So that's why we have, like, this full set of stealth mechanics.
06:12We have a full set of weapons that you can upgrade.
06:15And in order to do that, you have to go to the human encampment.
06:18So there's survivor encampments in the world, the only places in the world where it's safe.
06:22And you have to do jobs and missions with them in order to earn trust.
06:29And then once you earn trust, the merchants there will sell you that.
06:31Oh, I like that.
06:32And then they, you know, it's like, if you want to upgrade your shotgun or you want to upgrade or
06:36you want to buy a silencer for it,
06:37then you have to have enough trust at that encampment in order to do that.
06:41Loser, you there?
06:43I found the part.
06:44Got the bike part.
06:48Rippers!
06:48Rippers!
06:50No, no, no, no!
06:53He's not having a good time.
06:54This is the inside of the Crazy Willy's truck stop.
06:56And that's one of the other things we wanted to point out is that it's full open world.
07:00But there is, there's a lot of exploration in the game.
07:03All of the building interiors are accessible.
07:05There's no load times to get in and outside of a building or to go between regions.
07:09This is in the Belknap wilderness.
07:11And the whole area is just completely explorable.
07:14And then these are the Rippers that I mentioned earlier.
07:16So these are one of the cults in the game.
07:19These cats are dead symbols of a dead man.
07:22Dead symbols of the lost.
07:25Get off me!
07:26You son of a bitches!
07:29Bikerman!
07:30You must be brought low, Bikerman.
07:32For you are lost.
07:34And we are found.
07:36Get the path from the dead.
07:38Oh yeah, that's a little hard.
07:39Who's for you?
07:54So you can see they're not very friendly.
07:56No.
07:57You've talked about having freedom in terms of how you approach missions.
08:00So you can approach them stealthily.
08:02You can go in all guns blazing if you want to.
08:05What kind of freedom do you have in terms of the mission structure, in terms of the story?
08:10Do you get to make story choices in the game?
08:12Or is it like sort of like a linear narrative path you're going to be taking?
08:16Yeah, there's several key places where you have to choose what Deacon is going to do in a key situation.
08:22So we released a bunch of footage last month.
08:24And if you watch carefully, you'll see that there's a moment where Deacon has the choice to take a man's
08:30life or to force Boozer to do it.
08:31Right.
08:32And that will have an impact on Boozer's morale.
08:34So your best friend, how he feels about you, how he feels about the world, that's kind of up to
08:39you as the player.
08:40Awesome.
08:42Did you just die?
08:42Hey, we just wanted to prove that that was our scripted doubt.
08:46Is that really what just happened?
08:47We wanted to prove that it was real.
08:49And you will die in this game.
08:51Yes, you will die a lot.
08:52All right, so you tried doing sort of a stealthy approach, and now you're just going to go in with
08:57a shotgun and blow him away.
09:02Look at that headshot.
09:06Or baseball bat, that works.
09:08Can you tell us anything about what has happened in the world?
09:11You know, why are we in this post-apocalyptic situation?
09:14Like, are you able to reveal, like, kind of what has happened?
09:17What has led to this transition?
09:18Yeah, you know, it's one of those things that we really want the player to sort of learn as they
09:23go.
09:24So there are answers.
09:25Right.
09:25But you have to explore.
09:27There's a, you know, we have, we've introduced this group called Nero, which is our National Emergency Response Organization.
09:33They're out in the world.
09:34They have these MMUs that you're trying to break into in order to get medical supplies.
09:39They're part of the story.
09:40And, you know, obviously, Deacon has lost somebody.
09:43We saw that in a trailer.
09:44That's part of the story.
09:46And as far as, like, the pandemic and the horrors that you run into constantly, these all sort of weave
09:53together to sort of explain how we got, you know, to this place and this world.
09:58And we're really excited to have players get into the world and just sort of explore and let us know
10:04what they think.
10:05I mean, it's looking fantastic.
10:06I can't wait to just get around on the bike.
10:08The bike looks, like, really, really cool.
10:10Like, how far can you upgrade the bike?
10:12How far does it go?
10:13Like, uh...
10:17I couldn't hear it, sorry.
10:18How many, how many, how far can you upgrade the bike?
10:20How many parts do you think there are?
10:21Oh, there's at least 20 categories of things you can upgrade.
10:23They're all functional.
10:24Plus, all kinds of ways to tweak it visually, you know, from a paint job to a custom skin theme
10:30and all kinds of just visual, actual hardware upgrades.
10:33But a ton.
10:34You can really make it your own.
10:35Awesome.
10:36Well, John, Jeff, Chris, thank you so much for your time.
10:40Ramon, is there anything else you want to ask?
10:42Day's gone.
10:43We also got a release date.
10:44Yes, it does.
10:45February 22, 2019.
10:47Yeah, we're really excited.
10:50February 22, can't wait.
10:52Well, guys, thank you so much for your time.
10:53The game is looking absolutely fantastic.
10:56We have got a lot more coming up from PlayStation Live at E3.
10:59We've got an incredible lineup of games to show you.
11:01So please stay with us.
11:02We'll be back right soon.
