Shan, RJ, and Bobby discussed the latest around A. J. Brown, reacting to reports that the Philadelphia Eagles are not expected to trade him, while the Rams are potentially shopping Davante Adams. They took a look at how the first wave of free agency has reshaped team needs around the league, what it could mean for the upcoming draft, and more.

00:00Diana Russini reports after serious conversations with both the Rams and Patriots,
00:05the Eagles will not trade A.J. Brown at this time.
00:09Both teams remain interested. No move is imminent.
00:12If a trade were to happen, it would likely heat up closer to June 1st.
00:18So that is the A.J. Brown update with the Rams in the past.
00:22I would guess if I was an NFL team, I've gone through the first wave of free agency.
00:27I've put 15 months into the draft.
00:30Unless a sweetheart deal comes by, I'm hanging on to my picks at this point.
00:36It had to be a good deal. We're so close to it.
00:39Is this not the most value these picks will ever have within the final month?
00:44I don't know. People say that.
00:46I always think that there's always more value on the mystery box.
00:51You know who's in the draft now.
00:53You're going to have a hard time convincing yourself,
00:54is this pick going to be better than A.J. Brown? Probably not.
00:57That's the number one thing in sports I still don't understand is the currency.
01:03Of draft. Of prospects.
01:05Giving up a fourth is a fifth next year.
01:08Yeah.
01:08That's the number one thing I still don't understand in sports.
01:11Don't even try to explain it to me because I'm like,
01:13all right, if Choppy owes me the $500 barstool money,
01:18next year if he pays it, I'm not looking at it like,
01:21well, that's really $490 now with the depreciation of the draft.
01:26I don't even know what depreciation is.
01:28I'm such an idiot.
01:29I'm going to go try to do it on my taxes, I think,
01:32but I have no idea what it is.
01:34No, I think it's more like I'm going to give you,
01:37I'm trying to think of a better comp for it.
01:39Like a player has a fourth round grade?
01:42The next year to me he still has a fourth round grade.
01:44Sure. So the idea would be that you don't know if you'll end up picking
01:48at the back of that round with the pick because you don't know where it is.
01:52And if you pick at the back of the round of that pick,
01:54you're probably not getting a player graded in that round.
01:57So the idea to them is that, yeah, if I'm picking at the top half of the round,
02:00like if I get a first, yeah, if I'm picking at the top half,
02:03I'll find a first round graded player.
02:04If I'm picking at the back end of the first,
02:05I'm probably picking a second round graded player.
02:07So they treat it as if, since I don't know if that's going to end up
02:10being the last pick in the first round,
02:12I've got to treat it as if I'm getting a second round player
02:15with this pick they're sending me.
02:16Yeah, but then wouldn't that eliminate doing a deal with the Jets
02:24like versus the Patriots?
02:27I can't look at them the same way because I assume that New England
02:30is going to have a much better year.
02:31But last year if I would have made a trade with the Patriots
02:34for their first round pick,
02:35I would have assumed it was going to be in the top end of the first
02:37and now it's like one of the last.
02:38Yeah.
02:38And so instead I've got to look at it like, okay,
02:40I've got to anticipate that New England may pop and be good
02:43and that pick is not what I thought it was going to be.
02:44I wouldn't do that though if I'm trading with the Jets.
02:46I'm not going to be like that.
02:47Probably not, but you got to have a little bit of thought there.
02:52Apparently the Rams considered trading,
02:54as they considered trading for A.J. Brown,
02:56they explored moving Devontae Adams because you're like,
02:59why do they need A.J. when you got Devontae and you got Puka?
03:04Well, they were thinking about moving Devontae.
03:06I don't know why the Rams are so eager to shake things up.
03:10It doesn't make sense to me.
03:11I don't know if it's a, what's a shakeup?
03:13I mean, they've revamped the entire secondary.
03:16Which no one would argue has not been an improvement.
03:18They fortified it.
03:19No, they're good.
03:20But again, we always know free agent acquisitions,
03:23they're dicey.
03:24You don't know how somebody's going to come in and fit in
03:26and if you just wasted a bunch of money on that
03:27and then being willing to move on from Devontae.
03:29It's like the biggest thing they had that was wrong with them
03:31was their special teams.
03:32That's why they lost games last year.
03:33I think their secondary was supposed to be an issue too.
03:35It was not as great as it has been in the past.
03:38It was fine for most of the year.
03:41The defense was fine for most of the year.
03:42They literally lost the first game they lost to the Seahawks.
03:45That was because their special teams were so awful.
03:47It's a two-planked version, right?
03:48Yeah, and they allowed the punt return for a touchdown
03:50and they were just, they were not good.
03:52They fired their special teams coordinator like week 12.
03:55I like it.
03:55I'm jealous of it.
03:56I would love for the Dallas to be moving that way.
03:58But if I was that close,
03:59I wouldn't think I'd want to change so many parts
04:01is the only thing.
04:02They improved, like no one's going to argue
04:04they didn't improve the secondary with those two guys.
04:07They improved at their corner.
04:09Yeah, in a vacuum, like better players.
04:11I don't know.
04:12And you get AJ for Devontae.
04:14AJ is an improvement over Devontae.
04:17Unless AJ comes in there and starts Sterns.
04:19That's what I mean.
04:20Like you don't know what kind of a factor he'll be coming in there.
04:22He would not be the Philly factor
04:24because he'd actually have a quarterback
04:26who can get him the football.
04:28I mean, look, they're also...
04:30He's a quieter, I believe, in L.A.
04:31Not that he's not a pain in the ass.
04:33They are also operating
04:35in a completely different football world
04:37than I would say 30 other teams.
04:40This is RJ's number one winner of the offseason
04:43and free agency.
04:44He says the Rams and everybody else.
04:46I think they have separated themselves from the pack.
04:49They've made good moves.
04:50I don't have problems with their moves.
04:51I just in general think if I was close,
04:53I'd look for...
04:54Let me get one thing to push me over
04:56because I felt like I was the best team in the NFL
04:58for a lot of the year.
04:58I need one thing to change
05:00that really needs to push me over.
05:02I think it's just a little...
05:03It's a little bold to say
05:04let's swap out a few different starters
05:05and we don't know how this chemistry fits.
05:07Like we only got our corner
05:08because he can't play there anymore.
05:10Yeah, I mean, they made...
05:11Honestly, he would have been back
05:12if they wouldn't have gotten those guys.
05:13And, you know, they're operating,
05:15I think, on a one-year window.
05:18They have to operate year to year with Stafford.
05:20Like they don't know.
05:21And McVay.
05:22Yeah, for sure.
05:23And like, I think they're just sitting there accepting
05:25at the moment Matt decides to retire
05:27and Sean McVay's probably going to leave
05:30that they're going to be in for a problem.
05:34And they're like,
05:35we're just going to go all in
05:36and we'll deal with our lumps later.
05:38And they have the blessing of the ownership.
05:40Speaking of receivers,
05:41Jalen Tolbert is signing with the Miami Dolphins
05:44on a one-year deal.
05:46Apparently Tolbert is close with Malik Willis,
05:48who was his quarterback at the Senior Bowl.
05:511,000 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns
05:53with the Cowboys over four seasons.
05:56And Juanye Thomas is a former Cowboy
05:59as he signs with the Indianapolis Colts.
06:01So all the best to Juanye and Jalen.
06:03Yeah, Juanye was a really good guy here.
06:06I think he, I think by the end,
06:08things had not gone the way he wanted them to.
06:11And that was a little frustrating for him.
06:14Jalen Tolbert, I hope you get the reset.
06:17I hope it helps.
06:18Because, I mean, I still think there was,
06:21that was a talented player coming out of school.
06:23That was a guy who was really,
06:24Alante Taylor, who just got paid a bunch of money.
06:26You can go turn on Jalen Tolbert's junior tape
06:29and he's hanging 180 yards on him
06:31when they play Tennessee.
06:32And so I, hopefully a reset works for him.
06:34All right, Bob, let's look at where team needs stand
06:37above us after week one of free agency.
06:40Yeah, so now that we've kind of had the pass through
06:42and everybody's wondering,
06:44all right, well, what are we going to get?
06:44Are we going to get somebody to fall down to us
06:46like Sonny Stiles, Caleb Downs?
06:49What do these teams even ahead of us even need?
06:50That's the biggest thing where people usually go wrong
06:52with these mock drafts,
06:53is trying to figure out what did the team actually need?
06:56Like, I saw one yesterday.
06:58Swear to God, they had assigned number 12,
07:02Jermon McCoy, after the Cowboys said,
07:03we're not doing redshirt players,
07:04and they would be taking a redshirt player.
07:06And then number 20 was Makai Lemon,
07:08the wide receiver from USC.
07:10That's somebody who doesn't know
07:11what the hell they're doing when they're mock drafting.
07:12So let's figure out what do these beat reporters say
07:15each team needs.
07:16So this was over at The Athletic.
07:17They decided to take a look at what every team needs.
07:20So now we know that Raiders are taking a quarterback number one,
07:22so it doesn't totally matter what they do.
07:24By the way, is McCoy for sure a redshirt?
07:26No, he's not a redshirt this year, allegedly.
07:29But that's the thing, nobody knows.
07:30And they're not going to risk on that, I don't think.
07:33So at the Jets, they're picking number two.
07:36Their top need is still wide receiver.
07:38According to their beat reporter, Zach Rosenblatt,
07:40said wide receiver is the easy answer here,
07:42said they do have two picks in the first round, though,
07:4416 and two.
07:46So they will likely address receiver more with the 16 pick.
07:49Number two, likely to be somebody
07:50on the defensive side of the ball.
07:51I'm already out on this.
07:52Their number one need is a quarterback.
07:55Yeah.
07:56No, I know.
07:57I think they're talking about, like,
07:58realistically, there's no quarterbacks out there to get,
08:01and there's no quarterback in the draft.
08:03The Arizona Cardinals pick number three.
08:04This is what Broadus was spending all weekend in.
08:06By the way, real quick,
08:07and I don't want this to carry over into a fight,
08:09if you were the Jets,
08:10you're taking whoever the second quarterback
08:13on your board is.
08:15Yeah, I mean, look,
08:15unless he's a complete,
08:17unless I look at him and I'm like,
08:19this guy just is a bum.
08:20Yeah.
08:20I would probably trade down if I could.
08:24If I've got 16,
08:25and the second quarterback's probably going to be there at 16.
08:28Yeah.
08:29But otherwise, they do have 16, right?
08:31Yeah, that's what I would do.
08:32That's what I would do.
08:33I would try to trade down from two if I can,
08:36because I don't want to pay the highest non-quarterback,
08:38and then I would take a quarterback at 16.
08:40The thing that Broadus was trying to figure out all weekend,
08:42Indy,
08:42was who their Cardinals are going to pick,
08:44because he couldn't figure them out at all.
08:46And so he was talking to Arizona people
08:48and looking at some things,
08:49and Broadus came away from there going,
08:50I think they might be taking an offensive lineman,
08:52which would help Dallas.
08:54You need some offensive players to come off the board ahead of you.
08:57Doug Holler over at The Athletic says that
09:00GM Monty Austin Fort did a nice job
09:02bolstering the offensive line during free agency.
09:05Cardinals added a couple veterans,
09:06but he says that there is still work that needs to be done.
09:09At some point,
09:10the line can't be something the team pieces together every offseason.
09:13The Cardinals have an anchor and left tackle,
09:15Paris Johnson Jr.
09:15They need to find another in the draft,
09:17keep building up front.
09:18So we're hearing now that the Cardinals,
09:20they're going to draft an offensive line,
09:21which helps.
09:22And if they've got a left tackle,
09:23then that means they need a right.
09:24And both of the tackles in this year's draft,
09:26Spencer Fano from Utah,
09:28and then Francis Maunoah from Miami,
09:30both those guys are right tackles.
09:32So the next pick behind them,
09:34Tennessee.
09:34Tennessee's one that I've seen ruin some things for Dallas
09:38in some of these mock drafts.
09:39They said,
09:40Offensive weaponry is the biggest Titans need remaining.
09:43Says though a difference-making edge and reliable starters
09:46as them for 30 years at center and right guard
09:49also would help a lot.
09:51So,
09:51okay,
09:52if you're talking about a difference-making,
09:53like playmaker on offense,
09:54that's Jeremiah Love to me.
09:57Like,
09:57and if Love could go at four,
09:59that would be roughly the range that he could end up going.
10:01Maybe they look at a receiver there,
10:02like Carnell Tate from Ohio State.
10:04But the difference-making edge is the one that would be a little bit,
10:09would start taking players off the board that you're interested in.
10:12If they go get David Bailey,
10:13or if Arvel Reese didn't go to the Jets at number two.
10:18Next pick on the here is the New York Giants,
10:20who we've all seen what they've done this offseason
10:22and the way that they've kind of aggressively built in the Harbaugh mode
10:27that they're looking.
10:27They say,
10:28Take your pick between right guard and defensive tackle.
10:31Well,
10:31that's about the two positions that the Cowboys need the very least,
10:34because they drafted Tyler Booker in the first round last year,
10:37and they've sunk a ton of money into defensive tackle.
10:40It said,
10:41looking at the way that the Giants have played free agency,
10:44it said patience could pay off for the Giants.
10:45They need a starting right guard and starting defensive tackle,
10:47though,
10:48to ease concerns about the state of their lines.
10:50So if you were able to get those two,
10:52because they've had a lot of different times where Sonny Styles has been a
10:55very popular pick to them in mock drafts.
10:58And that's,
10:59I think one that a lot of people feel like could be a difference maker for the
11:01Cowboys.
11:02The Cleveland Browns next on this list.
11:05They've got two separate picks in the first round,
11:07and there's been chatter that they are the first trade out team that says they
11:10want to get out of pick six.
11:12So if they could get out of pick six,
11:14it sounds like they'd love to do that.
11:15But it said the Browns added three offensive linemen and brought back another,
11:18but needs remain across the offense.
11:20This is all setting up pretty nice to me.
11:21Everything behind it so far is a lot of offensive needs.
11:24The most pressing need is either a wide receiver or quarterback.
11:27But for now,
11:28we'll assume that the Browns plan to let Shador Sanders try to lock up that
11:31quarterback job.
11:32But they talk about a thin,
11:34unreliable receiving core that ultimately could open things up behind them.
11:38And then the commanders next on this list,
11:39they say Adam Peters has done so far what he could to build up the defense,
11:43prioritize the pass rush,
11:44said out of all these new acquisitions they've had,
11:46though,
11:46they still need offensive playmakers,
11:48that that's their biggest need.
11:49Love has been mocked here too.
11:51Saints are next up on this list.
11:53And yeah,
11:53love has gotten a lot of stuff there.
11:55Saints are next on this.
11:56Larry Holder says that as a whole,
11:58the Saints should be applauded for the work that they've done.
12:00Then they went out and got Travis Achan and guard David Edwards.
12:04Norms could still use help at wide receiver though.
12:06So this is a lot of offensive heavy stuff behind the Cowboys that would help them
12:11push down.
12:11The only problem is it's such a defensive intensive group of players that doesn't
12:18match up with the needs.
12:19Teams may go,
12:20that doesn't fit our needs.
12:20So we'll just have to address this a little bit later on.
12:23Chiefs,
12:23their top remaining need still is edge rusher.
12:26They could use obviously some guys in the secondary.
12:29The Bengals,
12:29they say is going to be a defensive focus as they look to rebuild.
12:33And then the Dolphins is the secondary.
12:36All right.
12:36So it's sounding nice,
12:39but it's not really lining up with the boards.
12:42Right.
12:43And so do you have some teams that go like,
12:44for instance,
12:45the Jets,
12:45if their top need is receiver,
12:46they're like,
12:47that's nice.
12:47We're not taking a receiver too,
12:48though,
12:49because we don't have anybody there that we would grade that high.
12:51And we've got another pick later.
12:52So we will take a defensive player there.
12:54So that's the only thing is that does it throw some things.
12:57I think definitely need Tennessee and the giants to go offense,
13:00to really help start pushing stuff down the board.
13:02How good of a discount or not would Cleveland have to give you to move to six
13:07to get a player that you want?
13:09He would do it for Bailey.
13:11Yeah.
13:11If Bailey got down there,
13:13I would trade 12 and 20 for six and 39.
13:17That,
13:18that is about equal on the trade chart.
13:20Fantastic.
13:20Asking what if love is at 12?
13:22There are some people who say they would absolutely take him.
13:25I would not.
13:26It's just,
13:26it's not a good use of resources.
13:28What if I tell you,
13:29he's Jameer or Bijan?
13:32Wouldn't do it.
13:33You'd probably be likely to trade down then,
13:35right?
13:35You'd be able to,
13:35I'd,
13:35I'd look for something to turn it into more capital,
13:37but I can't go picking more offensive players.
