00:00Modern life is messy.
00:02It's really bad.
00:04And somebody's got to clean it up.
00:06If you have a weak stomach, it's not for you.
00:08Meet the people who get down and dirty to keep the country spick and span.
00:13Coming up...
00:14The seagulls, they're the smartest birds here in Dublin and they're just all congregating pro-clam.
00:19So we just need to get this clear.
00:21ASAP.
00:22I have a feeling it might be a bit of a narnia in there.
00:26It's not elderly or animal possibility that there's a rat's nest in this house.
00:31This is Cleaning Up Ireland.
00:36It's All-Ireland hurling final day and Ryan's Cleaning prepares for a full house in Croke Park.
00:41Ryan's is a family business that, just like the GAA, started in Tipperary.
00:47Cleaning is a universal language.
00:49No matter where you go in the world, cleaners are required.
00:53Croke Park, for All-Ireland, it's one of the biggest sporting events in the country.
00:59Each year.
01:00It's a huge, huge stadium.
01:02Lots of steps.
01:04Lots of walking.
01:05Everybody's feet do be tired by the end of the day because we cover so much ground.
01:10See, up the steps.
01:12Yeah.
01:12And up there.
01:13I've known Aisling since she was a baby.
01:16I've watched her grow through the company and whatnot.
01:18She's ahead of herself.
01:21As the turnstiles open, the 130-strong cleaning team are gearing up for one of the busiest days
01:28on their calendar.
01:30My role today is to make sure that everyone is in their position and that the job is complete
01:37as much as we can because there's going to be so much crowd here today.
01:42Everyone have their keys, dustpan, brushes, whatnot.
01:45Any problems, give me a shout.
01:47Thanks, folks.
01:47Have a good day.
01:49I think we're doing it so long, you know.
01:52It just rolls.
01:53Pressure sometimes, but as I always say, pressure is for tires.
01:58With 78 food and drink outlets and four public bars in the stadium, today we'll see the 82,000-strong
02:04crowd generate 22,000 kilos of waste for Ryan's to remove.
02:11The biggest things today will be keeping on top of bins on the concourses, keeping on top
02:16of people when they're drinking, they leave on ledges.
02:19So it's important to make sure all the cups are removed from the ledges as well and cleaned
02:23down.
02:26Dee has been working with Ryan's Cleaning since she came to Ireland just over a year
02:30ago.
02:31Her base today is the Hogan stand.
02:35Any litter picking on the floor, any glasses that are left untended, I'll be solely responsible
02:40for that.
02:42You have to make sure that you push your way through.
02:45That's the only way to get the job done.
02:48Dee is so much energy and she's a whiz.
02:51She goes around so quick and just in between everyone and just cleans everything in her
02:56side.
02:57I'm not bothered by the crowd, they know they are cleaners and I'm one of them so I think
03:03maybe some people they do have shame in what they do.
03:06I don't have.
03:07For me, a walk is work.
03:10It's just about 15 minutes before kickoff, so most of the friends have gone to the stands.
03:15They know that they can't go with the drinks, so they've left most of their drinks here.
03:20This place has to be cleared up.
03:24And it's hot today, oh my God.
03:27Who have you coming up here to 707?
03:34The seagulls, they're the smartest birds here in Dublin and they're just all congregate and
03:38pro park, so we just need to get this cleared ASAP.
03:49We're amongst all the cock supporters now, we need to go to the chip supporters.
03:55As Gemma battles her way through the Red Sea, declutterbugs Kim and Lynne are on their way
04:02to tackle a room that's lost the run of itself.
04:05I spoke to her the other day and she is so ready.
04:09Like, she is ready, she was like, Kim, I'm letting go of so much.
04:12I'll make sure I give them a heads up in Virgin Ireland now that we've got a few bags coming
04:17to them.
04:17I'm going to try and get it all done before the holidays.
04:20Yeah, are you organized or are you packed?
04:21Um.
04:23Everyone always says, God, like, is there must be childhood friends because I suppose the way
04:27we go on, but no, we're not.
04:29Like, I think we're coming up to, we'll know each other five years now.
04:34Hello.
04:34Hello.
04:36How are you?
04:37Show us, Nicola.
04:38Okay, this is it.
04:40Wow.
04:46It's horrendous.
04:47I love it.
04:48He's loads of color and sparkles.
04:50We're getting rid of those hangers because, look, all the stuff's fallen off them already.
04:53It's making me itch.
04:54Any idea what's in those black socks, Nicola?
04:56No.
04:57Okay.
04:57I think there might be some summer stuff.
04:59Hidden gems in the back there.
05:01There's another few here.
05:03Okay.
05:04As long as there's clutter, it's never going to be fully clean.
05:07So, it's about making those spaces as clear as possible.
05:12With Nicola out of the way, our dynamic duo can dive in.
05:17Wardrobe projects are probably one of our favorites, to be honest.
05:19I think it's a great opportunity for people to really sit back and assess what they've got, what their style
05:24is, you know, if their size has changed, all of those sorts of things.
05:28We are separating out into trousers, jackets, dresses, skirts.
05:35We've got clothes on the floor.
05:37We've got bags of clothes.
05:38And I can guarantee they were like, I'll sort that.
05:41I'll get to that.
05:42But, you know, listen, that's why we're here.
05:47Kim and Lynne understand that clutter needs to be handled with care.
05:52We're in the most personal spaces in their homes, you know, in their underwear drawers, in their wardrobe.
05:59You're touching all of their memories and everything.
06:01Oh, we have a wedding dress.
06:06A veil.
06:09Ready to get married, Lynne.
06:10No, thank you.
06:12People store unusual things, like memories and umbilical cords.
06:17You've got umbilical cords.
06:19They're leggings and soft, so.
06:21A whole gym moment.
06:24I think she's been hiding some shoes, Kim.
06:26Has she?
06:26There's some boots hidden behind bags.
06:29As Kim and Lynne get ready to give this clutter its marching orders, Hess Controllers' good riddance are en route
06:35to a rebellion of their own.
06:37I can get extra long rubber gloves.
06:39See, nine times out of ten, it's the same as me, like, if you buy a box of gloves, get
06:43me a box of gloves, like, I'll take two or three of them out of it, and then the rest
06:46go to Alison, so she can put her tan on.
06:48It's not an easy industry to work in.
06:50It's not an easy industry to stay working in.
06:52At the end of the day, you're getting rid of rats out of people's houses.
06:55This is Ian and Jay's second visit to a home that could use a little TLC, and now has some
07:01unwelcome guests.
07:02Right.
07:03What do we need?
07:04We need traps.
07:06I have the cement there.
07:07How many traps do you have there?
07:08There's two traps there.
07:09There's probably more underneath that box.
07:10Yeah, just to say that should be enough.
07:12Right, let's go.
07:13It's been 24 hours since Ian and Jay set motion cameras and traps in this home's cluttered cupboards.
07:20Now to find out what's been moving amongst the mess.
07:25So, last time I was here, they called me because they were hearing noises in this press in particular.
07:30So, I've got motion cameras set in here, I've got a couple of traps set in here.
07:34Before I started in pest control, it probably would have scared the hell out of me to get stuck in
07:38close quarters with, like, a rat or something like that, because you wouldn't know what exactly you're supposed to do.
07:43It's not a matter of being afraid of what you're doing, it's just knowing what to do.
07:50I've got him in the press.
07:51There he is there now.
07:53So, it's making its way through the whole unit.
07:56He's eating out of the chocolate chips, but the trap is peanut butter.
08:01So, he might have an inversion towards the trap or an inversion towards the actual peanut butter itself, because he's
08:06not going near it.
08:07I wouldn't trust him either.
08:09Like, he'll snap your fingers off and it'll kill them.
08:11Like, rats, I would say, would be highly intelligent.
08:14You can put down as many traps as you want in a house.
08:17You might never even catch a rat, like.
08:19Over time, an abundance of open food packaging has made the presses a boom town for these peckish pests.
08:26Like, he's probably about a foot size, including the tail.
08:29Without the tail, he's probably half a foot.
08:31The problem is, with rats, that's not as big, they get bigger, like.
08:35Like, most people would think rats are nocturnal, that they're only running around at night time.
08:40But, as you can see, this is at 25 past 5 in the afternoon.
08:48With rodent activity confirmed, Ian and Jay will now install more traps with extreme caution.
08:55This kind of trap is not for the faint of heart.
08:58This one will break your hand.
09:01And you trigger on that top, and it's going to close, and it's going to close in, like, a split
09:05second.
09:05That's your hand gone.
09:06It's not like a normal rat trap.
09:08Like, a normal rat trap probably give you a bad, old, sore hand, like.
09:12That thing.
09:13Especially if it's your fingers that get caught.
09:15Your fingers are gone.
09:16You need your fingers to set rat traps.
09:18Show me.
09:19Hopefully we catch a couple of rats in the next couple of days.
09:22With the traps set, these drawers are off limits to the household, until the lads return in 24 hours.
09:29Going into a house, like, so that.
09:31And then dealing with rats and rat shit and all.
09:34Going off somewhere, just make sure your hands are clean before you eat something.
09:37I've yet to meet a job that's stopped me from eating a chicken fillet or a jambon.
09:41Yeah.
09:41So, I'm not going to start now.
09:46While Ian and Jay grab a bite,
09:48back in Croke Park, there's no time for a break for Ryan's cleaning.
09:52Croke Park is huge.
09:54Continuously cleaning while the crowd is there.
09:57The match has just started now, so you'll see all the people have gone in.
10:01Now you see the rubbish that's left behind.
10:03So, our guys now are going to clear this area, clear the toilets, change the bins.
10:08Cleaner isn't for everyone.
10:10Usually, you'd know in two days, no matter, say, two weeks,
10:13whether you have a good cleaner or not.
10:16Attention to detail.
10:17They have to have an eye.
10:18I feel like someone has to be fit in order to do this job.
10:23Obviously, your feet will feel it after maybe two or three hours.
10:28I'm used to it.
10:29Guys, can you do a quick sweep, please, 11-7?
10:33Our favourite Gemma, she's like a mammy number two.
10:36She's been around for so long.
10:38I can remember Gemma from when I was small.
10:40She loves being out there, working with people.
10:43This is how I get to see the match.
10:46It's starting off a little slow, but we'll get there.
10:48Yeah, barely yet.
10:49I love when Tipperary are playing.
10:51Usually, matches are on every week, and I wouldn't even, yeah, you'd see who's playing and whatever.
10:56When Tipper playing, it's special.
10:58We were here about 20 minutes ago, and now you see, it's clear.
11:03This was full of bottles, cans.
11:07It's all reset for half time.
11:09So, half time, everyone comes out again, and then we do the whole life over again.
11:15Still to come.
11:16So, we are going...
11:18Oh!
11:18Oh!
11:20When you see the streamers coming down, you say there's nothing, but look.
11:24Oh, there's the rat.
11:26Alive or dead?
11:26Alive.
11:37Kim and Lynne have emptied out Nicola's wardrobe, and now she has to get her head around the mountain of
11:42clothes she owns.
11:45Are you ready to see your wardrobe?
11:48Oh, my God!
11:50Oh, my God, it's horrendous.
11:53That's not all mine.
11:54That's what everyone says.
11:56No, it definitely isn't.
11:58Yeah, so Lynne very quickly decided you're a dress and blazer girl, so is that correct?
12:03Yeah, it kind of is, yeah.
12:05I love an old blazer.
12:06So, we are going...
12:07Oh!
12:08Oh!
12:10So, they're wearing really organised piles.
12:13Shows there's too much on the ledge.
12:16And now for the tough love.
12:19I'm going to hold up a piece of clothing, and you say yes or no.
12:22Yes, meaning stays in your wardrobe, no, meaning it goes to charity.
12:25No.
12:26No.
12:27Gone?
12:27Charity?
12:28Okay, brilliant.
12:29I think I have to keep that for the answer.
12:31Oh, absolutely.
12:32It's fabulous.
12:32Right, so the keep one I'm just going to put behind me for now.
12:35Oh, my hand dress.
12:36Is it two of them?
12:38No.
12:38Just that one.
12:39Aw.
12:40How long ago was that?
12:41What do you think?
12:42Ten years ago.
12:43Ten years.
12:43And have we put it back on in ten years?
12:45No.
12:46I suppose people, when they hear professional organisers, their head goes to, like, Kardashian
12:51pantry, you know, Kris Jenner's fridge, sort of this aesthetic organisation.
12:56But it's not that.
12:57Where it started for me was I lost my dad to suicide and ended up sort of quite depressed
13:02and the house got out of control.
13:04And then I started slowly organising and reorganising my own house and I realised that sort of peace
13:10of mind it gave me and the clarity and I felt good about myself and I found myself walking
13:15past that room and going, like, it was just a shoulder drop moment.
13:19And then I was like, I wonder if I can do this for other people.
13:22So it kind of, my idea started as helping people who were going through grief or bereavement
13:26or illness.
13:27I just really wanted to give back and give them some sort of control back over their lives.
13:30But that sort of spiralled now into just helping everyone that needs it, you know.
13:36It's a bit easier now, yeah.
13:38Once you get into it, you're like, OK.
13:40Yeah, once you get into the thing of it.
13:40I don't want that.
13:41Never going to have it again.
13:43I bought them for a festival, never wore them.
13:45Are we going to another festival?
13:47No, we're not.
13:48No.
13:48Will you wear them, do you think?
13:49Probably not.
13:49OK.
13:50All right.
13:51That's their answer.
13:52They're gone.
13:52As Nicola says goodbye to shoes she has never worn, good riddance are checking for overnight
13:57activity in those untidy drawers.
14:00Oh, there's the rat.
14:02Alive or dead?
14:03Alive.
14:04You're joking?
14:04He's literally just ran down that way.
14:07How strong is your stomach?
14:08Because he might be on here.
14:12Nothing there.
14:16Two on that one.
14:18Two rats at the same time.
14:20These rats are outsmarting the traps, but they're still working through the a la carte menu.
14:26So the rats have been eating the curry sauce, so you can see that they've been chewing in
14:29at that as well, like all the little claw marks.
14:32We're going to double up on the traps and make sure we can catch them.
14:36So they're eating the curry paste out of the press, so what I'm going to do is I'll bait
14:40the trap itself with the curry paste, and that way then when we set it, because they
14:46have been eating it, that trap now is set down and it's just basically putting it into
14:51the press.
14:54Rats are running through the system.
14:56You might not think that they're in your drains because of where you live, but they
14:59are running through the system.
15:00That's where they live, that's where they spend all their time.
15:02When you start to identify where these entry points are, that's when you know where to
15:06put the traps, because you're catching them as they come.
15:08At the moment, I think that we just dropped them in because we sealed off the entry points
15:12on the outside, we cemented everything off, so if nothing can get in, nothing can get
15:15out.
15:16I mean, it's not out of the realm of possibility that there's a rat's nest in this house.
15:21The rats fight on, but in Croke Park, the Rebels' day is done.
15:27Tip O'Reary have stunned the raging favourites in the All-Ireland Final, and giving tip-based
15:36Ryans Cleaning something to cheer about.
15:39But as the crowds spill out, the full scale of the clean-up becomes clear.
15:44With just four hours to leave the stadium as they found it, Ryans have called in the
15:49cavalry.
15:50The day shift stays on as well, but we're supplemented with the evening shift.
15:55There's about 130 people here.
15:58So they're going litter picking, they're going on toilets, they're picking the streamers.
16:03So all that stent has to be absolutely spotless again, and it will be in a few hours.
16:08Clearing the streamers from the hallowed turf is a carefully choreographed affair.
16:41Clearing the streamers, we handpick them because it's quicker, because if you pick the streamers
16:44the team's out on the stands who are litter picking the different streams of recycling, so you'll have the cans
16:52and bottles team, then you'll have the recyclables team, then you'll have the compost team, and finally you'll have the
16:59general waste team.
17:03On Hill 16, during a match, it seems to be the place that everybody wants to be.
17:08It looks clean while they're all standing there, and then once they all leave at the end of the match,
17:13you're kind of like, whoa, where does all that come from?
17:15It was bad. It is always bad, especially when we have a full house.
17:20On Hill 16, we really try as much as we can, pick up everything, all the bottles, trash, the food,
17:26in one place.
17:29The clothes are lost and found. People either forgot it, or maybe they left it.
17:36We now gather it, and then later onwards, we give it security.
17:40Okay, floor, I can't bear a gift.
17:45It's my gym. I always tell them, this is free cardio exercise.
17:52Every bottle and can left behind gets a second life with return, and the deposits are donated to children's charities.
18:04Let me feel my body. I think I'm still fine.
18:10I always say, personally, that the stadium has a spirit for me.
18:16Every time I'm here, I really don't feel that tired.
18:20For me, work is work.
18:22Do it with proud.
18:24It doesn't matter what it is.
18:25It's rewarding at the end of the day to see that you are delivering a good service, and your employers
18:31are pleased with your service.
18:34When you go home and you look back, you'll be like, I did that? Wow!
18:39And just like that, four hours later, a spotless croat park.
18:44So, it was great.
18:45The tip won.
18:46Oh, fantastic.
18:47Absolutely fantastic.
18:48And no replay next Saturday, which all the better.
18:51Good result for everyone.
18:53For all the time, the count.
18:55As Gemma and Aisling head home to put up their feet, there's finally light at the end of the tunnel
19:00for Kim and Lynne, and Nicola's starting to get her bed back.
19:04So, we do these little parcel folds, so when they're in the drawer, they're like file folded, so if you
19:10pluck one out, everything doesn't fall apart.
19:12Because that's the biggest problem with folding things, and things being in drawers, people say, I can't keep them to
19:17stay, so if we do this, keeps them together, it works.
19:21While we were going through Nicola's wardrobe, we found her wedding dress, we found her veil, we found her wedding
19:27shoes, and they were just kind of in amongst the chaos.
19:30They weren't really getting looked after, so what we've done is we found this lovely box on the top of
19:34her wardrobe, which was empty.
19:35She may very well never look at them again until she's doing the wardrobe again, but at least we know
19:41they're somewhere safe, they're being looked after.
19:45We're in this whole new generation, and it's so split, I would say, because you've got this generation of, like,
19:52Sheen Halls and Teemu Halls and all this kind of stuff,
19:54and then you also, on the other hand, have this amazing generation, which we love, who are on Vinted and
19:59Depop and going to their charity stores.
20:02What's our final count, Lynne?
20:04It is one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
20:08Perfect.
20:09All right, we get Nicola.
20:10Do it better.
20:11Nicola!
20:11It's time for the big reveal.
20:22Oh, my God.
20:25That is not my wardrobe.
20:28Wow.
20:30Does it feel good?
20:31Yeah.
20:31It looks really colourful, doesn't it?
20:33I feel like I have no clothes now.
20:35Oh, wow.
20:37It's like a little boutique.
20:38I can see where all my stuff is.
20:41It doesn't feel like my wardrobe.
20:43It looks incredible.
20:46All it is is about kind of those items of clothes going on and continuing to live their best life,
20:51as we always say.
20:51Yeah, rather than ending up in landfill.
20:53Yeah, ended up in landfill, left in a wardrobe, unused.
20:57Before heading home, the duo bring Nicola's unwanted clothes to Vision Ireland's massive warehouse,
21:03giving them a second life, giving them a second life.
21:06Goodies for you.
21:07Goodies galore.
21:11It's all about changing that mindset of, like, you're not shopping in a charity shop because you're broke.
21:15You're shopping in a charity shop because there's bargains and gems to be found.
21:21It's an early start for pest controllers Ian and Jay.
21:25Back for a third visit.
21:26Go in and check all the traps.
21:28Like, it is a bit of a race against the clock because gestation for rats is 21 days.
21:32I mean, they're eating everything that's knocking around.
21:35And finally, a result.
21:39Yeah, it's in my one.
21:42Nice.
21:48Ah, look at that.
21:49The rat was caught in the trap and he's been eating by another rat.
21:54All the alternative food sources.
21:56A rat, a dead rat, is always going to be an alternative food source.
21:59So it's going to be a good one.
22:00It's just protein.
22:01As I always say, it's the same way if a rat dies in front of you.
22:04Regardless if you hate it, it's still an animal.
22:06And if it dies in front of you, there's still that bit of a poor thing.
22:09Like, do you know what I mean?
22:09Like, eating as well.
22:13That's only a juvenile.
22:14Well, with a bit of luck, that's three rats that we were saying that might be caught.
22:18And my one was still fully intact, which is a sign then that nothing.
22:22He was the one that ate most of them.
22:24Hold it up beside your head.
22:26That's the same colour hair as you.
22:27One of the approved methods for disposing of a dead rodent is on-site burial.
22:31General disposable method of a dead rat, though, is it's in your refuse.
22:36It's in the black bin.
22:37It's nature, but when it becomes inside of a house where kids, people, you know, when food is there, like,
22:43that's where it becomes a kind of tough shit.
22:45Like, I can't feel guilty about killing them.
22:47Do you know what I mean?
22:47Like, if I don't kill them, somebody else will.
22:50Job done.
22:50So, leave the customer with recommendations to do general housekeeping and keep everything tidied up to stop anything else finding
22:57their way back in.
22:59Next time.
23:01It's the wrong side.
23:03So now you have to redo it.
23:04Uh, you're not supposed to be telling your mother what to do.
23:06It's not easy.
23:07They like to be doing this every day.
23:09This is one of the hazards of searching bags.
23:11Just here we have a syringe.
23:13Lane, I don't think we have any time to do it.
23:44We'll see you next time.
23:46Lane, I don't think we have any time to do it.
23:48Let's go.
23:48I don't think we have any time to do it.
23:49Let's go.
23:49Let's go.
