00:00:00Yeah, the Warriors tonight's coming home after a long road trip.
00:00:04This game is all about discipline and focus.
00:00:07This game is all about trying to make sure you do all the little things right.
00:00:10This is rebounding.
00:00:11We've talked a lot about Donovan, Donovan Klingon and his impact on the boards.
00:00:16This is a young team.
00:00:17Danny Avila, they are going to get into the paint.
00:00:18They're going to put the pressure on you.
00:00:20And being that they're young, they're going to try to ride the momentum of the game.
00:00:23So early in the game, you got to set the tone early with physicality.
00:00:26And you mentioned early, Advia had 26 points in the first meeting.
00:00:2920 of those were in the first half.
00:00:30Shut that off.
00:00:31You give yourself a chance.
00:00:32I like this.
00:00:33Portland 18-5 run to end that first half in that first game.
00:00:35And they blew out the Warriors by 20.
00:00:37As we are moments away from tip-off here.
00:00:40We're going to go inside the Chase Center and talk to the gentleman calling the action,
00:00:43as always, for a little crossover with Bob Fitzgerald and Kalina Azubuki and Fitz.
00:00:47I'm stuck with your guy again.
00:00:49I thought I got rid of him Wednesday night.
00:00:51But you know what?
00:00:52He's just lingering and lingering and lingering.
00:00:54And here we are with Rob Brooks once again, Fitz.
00:00:57I'll tell you what, Bonte, you're the shortest guy on the pregame show.
00:01:00How's that feel?
00:01:01That's my whole life.
00:01:02So you're joining me.
00:01:04I was about to say, what is going on in there?
00:01:06I'm hearing people owe people money.
00:01:08And there's all kinds of things out there.
00:01:10Buki, there's a lot of wildness going on.
00:01:11Don't put the pregame show's business in the streets.
00:01:14Wild Western Conference.
00:01:17We're just trying not to turn the ball over, Buki.
00:01:19That's all.
00:01:20That's huge.
00:01:21Well, in tonight's game, that's always an underlying key for the Warriors, taking care of their 30th in turnover percentage right now.
00:01:27You want to move up there.
00:01:28But, Rod, one of the key words for me in this game is pride.
00:01:32And I feel like that comes into play in every sport.
00:01:35In a game like tonight, the Blazers drive so much.
00:01:39And at some point, whether you're switching or whatever you're doing defensively, you're going to have to move your feet.
00:01:44You're going to have to slap the ground, Rod, and have some pride and say, you're not going to score on me.
00:01:49It's going to be tough for you to get all the way there because they want to get to the rim.
00:01:52They want to drive.
00:01:53Their point paints are up.
00:01:54They're not really a great three-point shooting team.
00:01:56So talk to me about that, the pride that it takes to stop a team like this that is this relentless getting downhill.
00:02:02Well, points in the paint, first time these two teams saw each other, 66 to 30.
00:02:08It was all Blazers.
00:02:09So you guys just detail it.
00:02:11You know how to shut their water off.
00:02:13Keep them out of the paint.
00:02:14And that does come with pride.
00:02:15I'm going to stay in front of this guy.
00:02:17I'm not going to let him beat me and put the pressure on the team on the rim.
00:02:21And, again, you know that they're not a very good three-point shooting team.
00:02:24And they're missing some of the length and athleticism that will bother the Warriors.
00:02:27So if you cut those points in the paint numbers down, just cut them in half.
00:02:30You don't necessarily have to win it.
00:02:31They just don't get beaten as badly as they did the first time these two teams saw each other.
00:02:36Now, Festus, in terms of the possession game, Portland plays so fast they have over 100 possessions per game.
00:02:42You mentioned Klingen and the rebounding.
00:02:44As a rebounder, can you just try to wall off Klingen and let guards and forwards go get rebounds?
00:02:50Do big guys say that?
00:02:51Look, I'll deal with the one guy, but you've got to come back and help me out on the glass?
00:02:55Festus, this is back to being the thankless job, the big man position.
00:02:58Because if I box out and I don't get those rebounds and Klingen ends up getting those double-digit rebounds, then it looks like I got outplayed.
00:03:05So back to the pride that Buki was talking about earlier.
00:03:09No, I've got to box out and go get those rebounds.
00:03:11And I'm putting that on this on TJD.
00:03:14I'm putting that on Quentin Post.
00:03:15And even some of the guards, Brandon Pajemski, Gary Payton II, those rebounds are huge momentum plays.
00:03:22And they can swing the game either way.
00:03:24You saw that last game, and you can see that tonight, against the Portland Trailblazers, the Warriors are looking to stay undefeated at home.
00:03:30And to do that, you've got to keep the momentum the whole game.
00:03:32All right, Portland and the Warriors, an NBA Cup game as the Warriors begin a five-game homestand.
00:03:37Fitz and Buki, have a great call tonight as we send it back to the Lazy Boy broadcast booth.
00:03:41All right, multiple choice.
00:03:44You're at home.
00:03:45It's an NBA Cup game.
00:03:47Portland beat you badly.
00:03:49And you didn't play well in Florida.
00:03:51Which would you like to rectify tonight?
00:03:53Is it D, A, B, C, D, E, all of the above?
00:03:57Yes, E, all of the above.
00:03:59Man, all of this is so significant, right?
00:04:01You have lost two in a row, and you come back home from a long road trip.
00:04:05You want to correct some things.
00:04:07But it is an NBA Cup night.
00:04:08And everything does feel different.
00:04:10The court is different.
00:04:11So the players are going to be hyped.
00:04:13They want to get a W.
00:04:14This means a lot to them.
00:04:15And you said it.
00:04:16You owe this Blazers team.
00:04:17And you know how fast they want to play.
00:04:20You respect that.
00:04:20You respect what they did to you in Portland.
00:04:23It's time for you to get them back.
00:04:24Now, for the Warriors, their Hall of Famers are playing good basketball.
00:04:28But who's going to come along for the ride?
00:04:30That's going to determine the whole season.
00:04:32Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler are being Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler.
00:04:36Our Lexus drive to greatness.
00:04:38When they're getting 30 each, you've got to win those games.
00:04:41Well, they're going to be Hall of Famers for a reason.
00:04:42And these two guys are really good.
00:04:45And I mean really good.
00:04:46So, you depend on that.
00:04:49You expect it.
00:04:50Who's going to be that third consistent scorer for this Warriors team?
00:04:54Even if it's a different guy every single night.
00:04:57Can you have someone perform?
00:04:58With efficiency, too.
00:04:59Not just big numbers.
00:05:00Efficiency.
00:05:01That's what you need to enhance these guys.
00:05:04Because they're going to look to score.
00:05:05But these are two of the most unselfish superstars in the NBA.
00:05:09They love to pass.
00:05:10They love to see their teammates get in on the act and shine.
00:05:13If you can cut off of Jimmy Butler's drives, when he's posting up, when he's ISOing, when
00:05:18he's going ball screens.
00:05:19Steph moving without the ball.
00:05:20Can you set a screen and roll to the back seat?
00:05:22You'll get something easy.
00:05:23You need everybody to be ready for their moment and stay aggressive when these guys are going.
00:05:27Portland reminds me of a word that my partner uses very well.
00:05:32Rambunctious.
00:05:33Portland plays so hard offensively and defensively.
00:05:36They have over 100 possessions per game.
00:05:38And if you're not careful, a Jeremy Grant, Denny Avdia are going to beat you.
00:05:42You've got to stop one of these two guys.
00:05:44Well, we just saw a game against the Heat where it's super fast-paced.
00:05:48The Blazers want to play the same way.
00:05:49And these guys benefit from that so much because they want to drive.
00:05:52One thing you want to know about Jeremy Grant, it's all you need to know.
00:05:55As soon as he gets the ball, he's looking to score.
00:05:57He's trying to go at your life.
00:05:59So you have to be ready to defend.
00:06:01Move your feet.
00:06:02Slap the floor.
00:06:02We just talked about it.
00:06:03And Denny Avdia, he had a great season last year.
00:06:06Career highs all the way around.
00:06:07Those numbers are up.
00:06:08And he is super aggressive as well.
00:06:10You may see the Warriors double-team him at times
00:06:12because he's trying to drive it down your throat as well.
00:06:15You may see the Warriors throw some different things out on Lyca's zone,
00:06:18but we'll talk about that during the game.
00:06:19When you're a sports fan, usually your favorite team happens when you're a kid.
00:06:24And for me, that team is going to be honored tonight.
00:06:27The 1975 champion Golden State Warriors.
00:06:31Al Adels leading the way, sweeping Washington.
00:06:34Ten guys played, elite offensively and defensively.
00:06:39They will be honored.
00:06:40We'll have them on the broadcast.
00:06:41They will be celebrating the 50-year anniversary of the champs.
00:06:46Monte, Festus, Rod, back at the gatehouse.
00:06:48Coming up next.
00:06:52Warrior Basketball on NBC Sports Bay Area is brought to you by Toyota.
00:06:57Toyota, class-leading MPG and more hybrid models than any other brand.
00:07:03Toyota, let's go places.
00:07:06And by Jack in the Box.
00:07:09Smash Jack Combo, the goat of the burger game.
00:07:13And by Volvo.
00:07:14Getting up some shots.
00:07:17Good to see.
00:07:18Will not play this season, but it's good to see Dame Dalla back in his hometown.
00:07:22Home region here.
00:07:22Obviously, Oakland's own.
00:07:24He loved Oracle Arena, but he's getting up some shots there.
00:07:26So many great battles between Steph and Damian Little.
00:07:29Must see basketball.
00:07:30We miss you on the court, Dame.
00:07:31For sure.
00:07:32No, we do.
00:07:32No doubt about that.
00:07:33Now, we miss you in the Warriors here at Chase Center, where they've been undefeated.
00:07:36Ooh, it's been a long time since they've been here.
00:07:37So, you've got to defend your home court.
00:07:39And the way you do that tonight against the Poland Trailblazers, you have to protect your paint.
00:07:43I've said enough, one of the ways you do that is by taking care of the basketball.
00:07:46Tonight, that's really key because this young team is looking for momentum in this NBA Cup game.
00:07:50Young players love the comforts of home.
00:07:52I want to see Will Richard get back on track.
00:07:55Got a little slow at the end of the road trip.
00:07:57Went scoreless in Miami.
00:07:59I'm looking for some points and some rebounding out of Richard tonight.
00:08:01World players play better at home, right?
00:08:03Guard the basketball.
00:08:04No doubt, but how about shout out to Chris DiMarco?
00:08:07He's leaving us soon, Fezzy.
00:08:09Has this ever happened that somebody gets hired in the middle of the season?
00:08:12Nick Nurse got hired midway through.
00:08:14And Chris Finch as well from Minnesota.
00:08:15Did they finish the season here?
00:08:17No, I know Chris Finch went straight to Minnesota.
00:08:19Congratulations, DiMarco.
00:08:20Congratulations to Chris DiMarco.
00:08:21We're going to miss him here in the Bay Area.
00:08:23That's huge.
00:08:23That's huge.
00:08:24This is why you do the job.
00:08:25Look at them carrots in his ear.
00:08:26Good God.
00:08:27Too bad he can't play with them.
00:08:28Warriors are blazers.
00:08:29Coming up next.
00:08:30He would if he could.
00:08:40The closer.
00:08:42After 10 days on the road, Chase Center never looked so good.
00:08:58And being home on a Friday night, that would be big enough.
00:09:01Celebrating the 50-year anniversary of the 75 championship team, that would be big enough.
00:09:07Making it a cup game against Portland.
00:09:11That would be big enough.
00:09:13And a team that beat you by 20 and a revenge opportunity.
00:09:17That would make it a huge game tonight.
00:09:19As the Warriors take on the Blazers.
00:09:21And R.I.K., which way is the NBA Cup going to go in the group of death?
00:09:26Yes.
00:09:26Because a lot's going to be decided tonight and then against the Rockets on Wednesday in this building.
00:09:33NBA Cup Knights.
00:09:35We love these.
00:09:36And this is the only group that came in today all tied up.
00:09:39So the Warriors need to win these games.
00:09:41Because like you mentioned a few games ago, I think, they're not going to get it when it comes to point differential.
00:09:47But it's going to be an interesting one.
00:09:49Because the Blazers, they also want to play fast.
00:09:52So transition defense is going to be important.
00:09:54And they are second in pace.
00:09:58Yep.
00:09:58They get the ball up the floor really quickly.
00:10:01And then defensive rebounding is going to be important.
00:10:04Because they do miss a lot of shots.
00:10:05They're 28 to 3 point shooting percentage.
00:10:07They're going to clank some.
00:10:08They're going to get them.
00:10:09Second offensive rebounding percentage.
00:10:12Grab the defensive rebounding.
00:10:13And then this one might be the most important one.
00:10:15When all is sudden done.
00:10:17When you're switching whatever you're doing defensively.
00:10:20At some point you're going to have to slap the ground and move your feet.
00:10:22Because they are trying to drive it down your throat.
00:10:25They're first in drives.
00:10:26They're trying to get to the rim.
00:10:28So moving your feet.
00:10:29Trying to play without your hands.
00:10:31They try to get to the free throw line.
00:10:32Show some discipline there.
00:10:34And usually that first home game after a long road trip can be a little rugged.
00:10:39C.D. Sissoko with Denny Avdia.
00:10:41Jeremy Grant.
00:10:42Tumani Kamara and Donovan Klingen starting for Portland.
00:10:45And right down the lane, Sissoko flies in for the first bucket.
00:10:50With Steph, Moses, Moody, Will Richard.
00:10:52Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green starting for the Dubs.
00:10:55You've got to see Manning Ball off the ball.
00:10:57Because when someone's driving from one side, best believe there's probably going to be a cutter from the other side.
00:11:03Moody around Avdia.
00:11:05Shot clock at seven.
00:11:07Draymond being dared to shoot that three and rimming that out.
00:11:10Jeremy Grant, he is a bucket.
00:11:15He had over 30.
00:11:17Avdia had over 30 in their loss to the Bulls.
00:11:19Sissoko missing.
00:11:20The size of Portland on display is Avdia was about 6'9 and playing over seven feet.
00:11:26There's going to be a lot of long rebounds like you saw in Avdia get that one.
00:11:30A circle of honor.
00:11:31Free throw line extended all the way around.
00:11:33You've got to push them past that if you can.
00:11:37Manny Kamara is an outstanding defender.
00:11:39He is shadowing Steph wherever he goes.
00:11:41Moody off-iron.
00:11:43And clinging the rebound.
00:11:44But he wants some length on Steph.
00:11:46So he's going to try to move off the ball and see if they can keep up with him.
00:11:54Avdia will settle for the three.
00:11:56Likes to drive.
00:11:57But he's become more than a capable perimeter shooter.
00:12:00And he's taken advantage of every mistake.
00:12:02Two defenders for a split second.
00:12:04Went with Sissoko.
00:12:05And you've got to be aware of who the more dangerous player is in that scenario.
00:12:10And Curry.
00:12:10Off-back iron.
00:12:11Warriors looking for their first bucket.
00:12:14Steph with an ankle twig.
00:12:15Jimmy Butler's got a low back strain.
00:12:18But they're playing tonight.
00:12:19And Draymond just gave Klingen a dunk.
00:12:22Well, that was just kind of a mad bounce.
00:12:24They were hoping Moody was going to be able to draw that charge.
00:12:27He didn't get the call.
00:12:28Is it the start you want?
00:12:29The Warriors trying to get off the schneid here.
00:12:32Yeah, he gets Miami.
00:12:33He was 20-4.
00:12:34And Will Richard cutting off the butter delivery.
00:12:37And cross-passes staff.
00:12:39Two defenders hesitate.
00:12:40It's enough to get Will Richard in there.
00:12:43A big part of Portland winning the first battle against the Warriors by 20 was an unusual three-point shooting night as it was knocked out of bounds.
00:12:50And it was Tiago Splitter's first game as a coach.
00:12:54And they were 16 made threes.
00:12:57They're the third-worst three-point shooting team in the NBA.
00:12:59Weird things happen.
00:13:00You're trying to make a miss.
00:13:02I always like to see former players get head coaching jobs.
00:13:05It seems like point guards and role players make really good head coaches as Jeremy Grant gets in there.
00:13:11Coach Kerr is in that role-player category, too.
00:13:13Point guards, for obvious reasons, they're generals on the court when they're playing.
00:13:16They have to know everything that's happening, every player's position.
00:13:19And then role players, they have a really nice perspective.
00:13:22They understand what it's like to fight for position in the league and how to impact winning, understand a guy trying to get in the league.
00:13:29And also understand what it takes to kind of stay out of the way of the stars.
00:13:33So kind of coach everybody, and they know exactly what they're doing.
00:13:37So Splinter's done a great job of making these guys play as hard as possible.
00:13:41So Grant, one of two from the line.
00:13:44And I'm going to tell Steve, you called him a role player, and he's going to say, you're right, my role in my nine rings.
00:13:50Yeah.
00:13:50Was he a role player or was he not?
00:13:52He said he's a role player.
00:13:53He was completely a role player.
00:13:54Having fun.
00:13:56But be a star in your role.
00:13:58Absolutely.
00:13:59You said it perfectly.
00:13:59Yeah.
00:14:00You know, he's not going to be Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen.
00:14:02Absolutely.
00:14:02He was a shooter.
00:14:04Draymond, he's a shooter, dropped down to three.
00:14:08And that three-point percentage back to 36%.
00:14:11That's fine.
00:14:11And they're going to steal Jimmy Butler.
00:14:14Will Richard into two-on-one.
00:14:15Moody spaces out.
00:14:17Rocks into the triple.
00:14:19There you go.
00:14:20Well, Warriors got their engines started.
00:14:22But once they did, they got to going pretty fast.
00:14:26Fired up.
00:14:27And Moody knocked that away from Avdia.
00:14:30Forced the jump ball.
00:14:31Yeah, Warriors got their intensity up.
00:14:33All of a sudden, the crowd's in it.
00:14:36They got going.
00:14:38It took a minute.
00:14:39But they're here now.
00:14:40Look at where Klingon is.
00:14:41When Draymond makes the three, what does he say?
00:14:44Boo!
00:14:45But look where Klingon is.
00:14:46Steph is running all around.
00:14:47Klingon's like, okay, I got to offer help.
00:14:49Steph is over here.
00:14:49And then all of a sudden, Draymond's rising up.
00:14:51He's got to shoot some of those.
00:14:53And he's got to rise up and shoot with confidence.
00:14:54He knows he's going to have time.
00:14:56Now, how do you win this jump ball?
00:14:58It's going to be tough.
00:14:59Probably over there if he can help it.
00:15:00Because you've got Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody on the same side.
00:15:03Kevin Cutler, the crew chief, has got good height.
00:15:06And he threw a good tap.
00:15:08And so does Avdia.
00:15:09That's the problem.
00:15:10Will Richard nearly had the pickpocket.
00:15:13Shot clock at seven.
00:15:15And Grant will rise.
00:15:17Richard contested that and didn't foul him.
00:15:19But Klingon was fouled on the rebound.
00:15:21So he's one of the reasons they're second in offensive rebounding percentage.
00:15:24He's the tallest guy out there.
00:15:26And he knows that he's going to try to get as good a position as he can.
00:15:30But even if he can't, like, he didn't have that time.
00:15:31He's kind of at the dotted circle right there.
00:15:34He's still able to get it, again, because of another long rebound.
00:15:37Long shots equal long rebounds.
00:15:39Klingon's 7'3", but he's 280.
00:15:42You know, we saw Wimanyamo who's probably 7'7", and Klingon dunking that down.
00:15:46So it's going to be tougher for Draymond to play cat-mouse, stab at it, jump backwards.
00:15:51Again, because of Klingon's size, his catch rates, he could throw it up so much higher.
00:15:57Butler attacking.
00:15:59Moody on the counter, breaks the paint again.
00:16:01Foul line jumper to Moses Moody.
00:16:04Two of three early.
00:16:05He's got five.
00:16:06So it could be a Moses-Moody game.
00:16:08He could be the guy to step up and say, I'm going to help the Hall of Famers out here.
00:16:13Obdia spacing out to Grant.
00:16:14They bolt that over 30 against the Bulls.
00:16:17Obdia missing there.
00:16:18I like how Will Richard came in.
00:16:19And Draymond's like, all right, I'll get Klingon out of there, but I need someone else to go get the ball.
00:16:23And his guy wasn't going, so what do you do?
00:16:25You pursue the ball.
00:16:27He jumped at Steph.
00:16:28He got a good screen, and Klingon was in front of him, so he drove him.
00:16:41He just didn't really have an outlet once he picked it up.
00:16:43And Obdia started, look at that, another lob to Klingon.
00:16:48The last two months of last year, Obdia was one of the best players in the entire NBA.
00:16:52But that's where it starts with on-ball defense.
00:16:54He just picked up his speed and changed the pace there.
00:16:58Oh, no, Draymond turned it over.
00:16:59Okay, this was discussed relentlessly on the road trip.
00:17:04Not a nice beginning with back-to-back giveaways.
00:17:07Well, the Blazers are third in opponent turnovers, but that's not a forced turnover there.
00:17:13Klingon will get to the line.
00:17:14That's always underlying for the Warriors when it comes to keys.
00:17:18Like, you have to take care of the ball.
00:17:20Warriors right now, they're 30th in turnover percentage.
00:17:24How many teams in the league?
00:17:25There's 30.
00:17:26Okay.
00:17:27And so that number needs to go up, and a lot of it is the Warriors curtailing, tempering their boldness,
00:17:35their audacity, the passes they're willing to try, fit it into tight spaces.
00:17:41Warriors taking on Steph Curry's favorite team, or the Niners are on Monday night.
00:17:45That'll be against the Panthers.
00:17:46Warriors will be taking on the Jazz.
00:17:49I will promote the 49er pregame live when we return.
00:17:54Do it.
00:17:55Whether you like it or not, Portland with a two-point lead early.
00:18:00Warrior basketball in NBC Sports Bay Area is brought to you by the San Jose State Spartans.
00:18:07Get your tickets today at SJSU Spartans.com.
00:18:11The Destroyer, the Voice of God, the incomparable Al Adels.
00:18:15He has missed tonight, but remembered forever.
00:18:19The championship coach of the 1975 team, and his number 16 hangs in the rafters.
00:18:25I was mentioning Niners pregame live.
00:18:28There you go.
00:18:29Against the Panthers, where Rod Brooks and Matt Maioco, Carlos Ramirez, that'll be Monday at 4 o'clock.
00:18:34And that is Steph Curry's favorite football team, the Panthers.
00:18:37There they are.
00:18:38There's Rick Barry and Clifford Ray.
00:18:41And to Rick's right, our camera left is Jamal Wilkes.
00:18:44Finals MVP, 1975 there.
00:18:48Rick Barry, 20, almost 30 points again.
00:18:50So Klingin, dropping in the second free throw.
00:18:55Seventh pick out of UConn two years ago.
00:18:58It would be nice to see the Warriors have success against a team like this that plays this fast
00:19:03and just know they can control a team like this, slow down the pace when they need to,
00:19:07have it fast when they want it to, just dictate the terms of this game.
00:19:11Ramon, offensive foul as he ran over Kamara, took away the bucket.
00:19:17He's just trying to get Steph open, maybe did a little too much.
00:19:20Kamara, really solid defender.
00:19:23Played it up a little bit for sure, but Draymond kind of couldn't stop his momentum from going forward there.
00:19:29Yeah, Tamadi Kamara, all defense last year.
00:19:33GP2's first playing time.
00:19:36And you see Avdia just kind of creating for everybody.
00:19:39His love missed that.
00:19:40Well, Moses out of bounds is Portland ball.
00:19:42Moses really did a good thing there.
00:19:43He didn't let him go right to a strong hand.
00:19:46He kind of jumped that direction, and Avdia had to turn back around.
00:19:49He gave it up.
00:19:50So, Warriors live to see another day.
00:19:52You still need to get a stop.
00:19:5314 seconds now.
00:19:54The undrafted rookie out of Arizona, Caleb Love.
00:19:56And then Chris Murray, Keegan Murray's twin brother.
00:19:59Caleb Love is known for his clutch gene, kind of a scoring point guard.
00:20:04Foul.
00:20:05Up top on Moses Moody.
00:20:07That's what I'm saying.
00:20:09Forget what play they're running.
00:20:10A lot of times it's not even a play.
00:20:12They're just looking to drive you.
00:20:13That's just a mean jab step to the left, and he's going right.
00:20:16And it's a lot to deal with.
00:20:17He has a quick first step.
00:20:19The guy is 6'9", and he's driving by guys that are much shorter than him with ease.
00:20:28Chris Murray down the lane.
00:20:29Now, Horford says no.
00:20:34GP2.
00:20:34Steph, turning and missing that three.
00:20:41But I don't care about that because Draymond didn't feel comfortable with the pass,
00:20:44and he might have thought maybe he'll turn it over as Al Horford blocks the shot.
00:20:47Al Horford blocking Love again.
00:20:49Clinging first man to the bowl.
00:20:50That skip pass somehow got to Kamara.
00:20:55Hoppy off 38%, but that's a foul on the pass, so the Warriors are piling up the fouls.
00:21:00Yeah.
00:21:01Man, that's there in the bonus now.
00:21:03Five Warrior fouls, none on Portland, so free throws the rest of the quarter.
00:21:08Look at Al Horford just moving his feet, no foul, and tracking that one.
00:21:14He's able to block down when the Warriors are off to the races.
00:21:16This is one thing the Blazers do really well, too.
00:21:19They're top ten in free throw attempts.
00:21:20We enjoy this because the Warriors have had such success in the 50s.
00:21:24Tomani Kamara, a 50-second pick in 2023 by Phoenix,
00:21:29and came over in the DeAndre Ayton trade, and he is a tremendous player.
00:21:34A great defender.
00:21:34And one thing, just one teaching moment he had last game, that Bulls game,
00:21:40where the Blazers fought all the way back.
00:21:42It was like 3-7 run in the fourth quarter, and the Bulls, I think it was Kobe White hit a three,
00:21:47then Buczavich hit the game winning three.
00:21:49They overhelped, and it was Kamara that overhelped.
00:21:52They're driving in the paint, and the three is the only shot that can beat him,
00:21:56and he overhelped, and instead of giving up a tough two,
00:21:59when his teammate had it under control, you help him off and give up an open three.
00:22:03The Warriors are trying to get rid of those overhelps as well.
00:22:06Staff setting up Pajewski.
00:22:08Brandon missed in the corner three.
00:22:10So the Warriors have opened two of seven on threes.
00:22:13Portland one of six.
00:22:18Obdia, they're running the whole deep offense room with no two holiday tonight.
00:22:23Klingon missing that three.
00:22:24He can live with that, but Kamara snuck in for the rebound.
00:22:27Draymond actually boxed him out, but he just wouldn't take a no for an answer.
00:22:30That's the thing, even when you put bodies on people, sometimes that's not enough.
00:22:34Got to fight even harder.
00:22:36Oh, no, another.
00:22:37Okay, no, this one.
00:22:38This is on the Blazers.
00:22:39This is going to be on Kamara because he fell down again,
00:22:42but he was holding on to Pajewski.
00:22:44Airpods is saying, thank goodness.
00:22:47You see how the Warriors are going to have to earn this one.
00:22:50This is a scrappy team in the Blazers.
00:22:53Look at Draymond just trying to box out.
00:22:55He actually got a hand on him, but Kamara just didn't take no for an answer,
00:22:59he just snuck around him, and Airpods is setting this screen.
00:23:02And Kamara, he's kind of playing it up every single time.
00:23:07He just grabbed Pajewski and tried to pull him down.
00:23:09Steph missing that three.
00:23:10I'm going to give J.B. DeRosa a lot of credit for that call.
00:23:13That is Joe DeRosa's son, and it takes the son of an NBA ref to realize
00:23:18pretty clever what Kamara was trying to do.
00:23:20A little embellishment there.
00:23:22How many times are the Warriors going to foul a three-point shooter?
00:23:28Like, these things have to stop.
00:23:31It's just mental lapses here and there.
00:23:33You're trying to contest as well as you can.
00:23:36A lot of it is pride, just trying to play defense as well as you can.
00:23:40That time, GP2 actually hit him in the face.
00:23:43He was trying to block his vision.
00:23:44And you can see players back in the day do that more.
00:23:51Here's the issue tonight, though.
00:23:53Portland's the third-worst three-point shooting team.
00:23:55They started one of seven on threes.
00:23:58Like, let him shoot a three!
00:24:01You want to see them make a couple.
00:24:03At least contest as good as you can without fouling.
00:24:05It's not, it's easier said than done, but they can do it.
00:24:09UCLA taking on Cal at the Empire Classic.
00:24:11That'll be right here at Chase Center on Tuesday.
00:24:14And tickets at ChaseCenter.com.
00:24:16And GP2's probably thinking he's their guy right now.
00:24:19He's their leading scorer.
00:24:20He's 38% from three-point range.
00:24:21Let me get out there.
00:24:22But you just, you have to have the discipline with that sense of urgency.
00:24:27So, nine unanswered for Portland.
00:24:29And we've already shot nine free throws to the Warriors.
00:24:32Zero in the quarter.
00:24:34Steph took it to trouble.
00:24:36Samax got it away.
00:24:37And then back to the home.
00:24:39Okay.
00:24:39Curry's first field goal of the night.
00:24:42That works.
00:24:44Klingon on now.
00:24:47All for him to see the size disparity now.
00:24:49Didn't foul him.
00:24:50And Klingon may have rolled an ankle.
00:24:52He's behind the play.
00:24:53It's a five on four.
00:24:54Klingon is not moving well.
00:24:56The Jetsky bottom's a three.
00:24:57And so, Portland's got to take a timeout because Klingon is in some distress.
00:25:03So, Portland's big man got a hitch in his get-along.
00:25:09And the Warriors' first of five on this homestand.
00:25:12Our great resort and casino winning the year of the championship for the Bay Area teams.
00:25:18The first time they won one of the A's.
00:25:20The swinging A's.
00:25:20They won three.
00:25:2272 the first one.
00:25:23The Warriors' team honoring tonight.
00:25:251975.
00:25:26The Raiders over the Vikings down at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
00:25:29That was John Madden's Super Bowl in 1977.
00:25:32The Niners began the team of the 80s with the catch then leading to the victory over the Bengals.
00:25:39And then the Giants, 2010, 2012, 2014.
00:25:43Wow.
00:25:451975.
00:25:46I wasn't born yet.
00:25:47Basketball was very different then.
00:25:50This is what happened to Klingon.
00:25:52Watch his left ankle turn just a little bit there.
00:25:56He's got a lot of weight on that ankle.
00:25:58That is a huge human being.
00:25:59So, that ankle was under a lot of stretch.
00:26:02I think he went to the locker room.
00:26:03Murray bottoming the three.
00:26:06That's Kamara.
00:26:07That's on the left hand.
00:26:08And I'm like, wait a minute.
00:26:09They got two left handers.
00:26:10Again with this.
00:26:11He's 30% from three-point range.
00:26:13But he lined that one up.
00:26:15He still has to contest even the shooters that don't have a great percentage.
00:26:19Holford rebounds his own miss.
00:26:21And now Holford will get to the line.
00:26:22Robert Williams, you saw him for the Celtics in the finals against the Warriors.
00:26:27And he can be a rim protector as well.
00:26:28They got size.
00:26:29They do.
00:26:30They do.
00:26:30They're not lacking in that department.
00:26:32Really good pick and roll player.
00:26:34Rolls hard.
00:26:35Good hands.
00:26:36You can throw it high.
00:26:37He's going to punch it down.
00:26:39So, Warriors have to deal with that.
00:26:40They're just happy to have him healthy.
00:26:42And that's the thing with this Blazers team.
00:26:45Having the consistency of bodies.
00:26:47They still have guys out.
00:26:49Obviously, Shaden Sharp is out.
00:26:50He's one of their big-time scorers.
00:26:52So, they're just trying to find a way to compete.
00:26:54They've been playing hard.
00:26:55They've been competing.
00:26:56They've been in some clutch games, close games.
00:26:58So, you have your hands full.
00:27:00Again, if you get a big lead in this game, they have been known to walk some teams down like they did against the Bulls.
00:27:05They didn't finish the job, though.
00:27:06They have 39 in that fourth quarter against Chicago, to your point.
00:27:10And Drew Holiday has been a great mentor and a leader for this team.
00:27:14Damian Lillard's out for the season, but he's still around the squad.
00:27:17Okay, here's the Warriors in their zone now.
00:27:19What is it said?
00:27:20They're going to play a lot more zone this season, too.
00:27:22But because they are seasoned, it can be a little tough to stay with guys at man.
00:27:26They look live with the shot clock at five and launching a deep three and burying that.
00:27:33So, love at 20% on threes.
00:27:35Yeah.
00:27:36And shot that from Fremont.
00:27:38The confidence is a funny thing, isn't it?
00:27:40When a team gets confidence, it doesn't matter what percentage they shoot.
00:27:43A lot of those fall.
00:27:45Steph Curry's beginning confidence.
00:27:47Bottoms of three.
00:27:48The other issue for Portland, they beat the Warriors by 20.
00:27:51Yeah, they're not afraid of the Warriors.
00:27:53The Warriors got to steal.
00:27:54The Warriors take it over.
00:27:58Steph.
00:27:59Looking for Pajemski to lay it up and in.
00:28:01Beautiful.
00:28:03Well, Steph is driving that you know everybody is focused on, including Pons defender.
00:28:08So, you just move without the ball and Caleb Love couldn't keep him in front of him.
00:28:14Obdiah to Robert Williams.
00:28:16He had set up clinging for dunks.
00:28:18Now, Robert Williams, the beneficiary.
00:28:20Obdiah, the playmaker.
00:28:22This is another part of his game that's gotten so much better this year.
00:28:27Like I said, it's 6'9", and he's got the handle, he's got the strength.
00:28:30Oh, he knows he's so much of a threat to score.
00:28:32P2, a little floater.
00:28:33Nice shot by Gary there.
00:28:35Everybody else has to be ready to attack.
00:28:38Steph Curry is Steph Curry, but you're still an NBA player.
00:28:42GP2 to slow down Obdiah.
00:28:44Point of action before.
00:28:45Get him to go left.
00:28:46If you can.
00:28:47If your help is on that side.
00:28:49Hey, Compia give it up.
00:28:51Love in the corner.
00:28:54Back to Love who would hit one, and then that time shot over everything.
00:28:58That's more like it.
00:28:59Really good contest there after that double team.
00:29:01You're in scramble mode.
00:29:02Uh-oh.
00:29:03Murray knocked it away.
00:29:04GP2 diving.
00:29:06And then Murray diving.
00:29:07It's great effort both ways.
00:29:09Get some floor burn in your life.
00:29:11That's what kind of game this should be.
00:29:13It's an NBA cut to carry.
00:29:15When the ball comes to suspension, you call it.
00:29:19But you get an idea of Obdiah's mentality as he's going to come out and get a break.
00:29:23This one's off shin bones.
00:29:25It's like a pinball machine, and GP2 sees what's happening almost before anyone else does.
00:29:30So he gets floor burn in his life.
00:29:32Murray's on the floor.
00:29:33Warriors are able to come away with it.
00:29:35But that's what it takes to win games like this.
00:29:38GP2's going to go to the locker room.
00:29:40Hopefully he's okay.
00:29:41Yeah, Klingan also getting that ankle looked at.
00:29:46Could be some bruises, a lot of ice, bats after this game, game readies.
00:29:52So Steph sitting, Jimmy Butler in.
00:29:54And Jimmy missing the mid-range there, his first shot of the night.
00:30:02Jeremy Grant.
00:30:05Kick out.
00:30:08That's a good, tough take and finish.
00:30:10Yeah, Caleb Love again.
00:30:12You want to probably close out a little shorter to him and see him make some threes, make him beat you over the top.
00:30:17That was a tough closeout for Jimmy Butler because he was helping in the paint.
00:30:21He ran all the way out there.
00:30:22Caleb Love was able to attack that off with closeout.
00:30:24Pajemski, it's a great setup for Al Horford.
00:30:27Missed the three, but those are the wide-open threes you want to try to create.
00:30:30Nice play by Moody initially, but you see the second jump and Portland get into the glass.
00:30:43They already have eight second chance points.
00:30:45Their effort is relentless on the glass.
00:30:47It's one of the things we spoke on early.
00:30:49Nice pass out home for the Jimmys to put it up at hand.
00:30:52He's just sealed it.
00:30:53The small defender, Caleb Love in there, expose him.
00:30:56Keep him on your back.
00:30:57Get your teammates at Target.
00:30:58You can throw it anywhere.
00:30:59Usually Jimmy's going to come down with it.
00:31:00And he's out for the three and right to the rim.
00:31:08Again, he's 28% in three-point range.
00:31:10You're closing all the way out to these guys.
00:31:12Closeout shorter.
00:31:13Know your personnel.
00:31:14This is not a good three-point shooting team.
00:31:16Most of these guys, you can close out a little shorter.
00:31:20He has to get whacked in the face.
00:31:22Oh, man.
00:31:24If he's crumbling to the ground, you know he got hit hard.
00:31:27Now, you said something.
00:31:29We talked about the pregame show.
00:31:30We talked about your other games.
00:31:31Know your personnel.
00:31:32The Warriors had 10 days where they didn't practice on the road.
00:31:36They didn't even have a shoot-around today.
00:31:37This is almost like another road game in terms of no practice, no shoot-around,
00:31:42and no fun for Pajemski getting whacked in the face.
00:31:45What else is new?
00:31:46He got hit in the schnoz again.
00:31:48That schnoz has been through it.
00:31:50Steve Kerr is looking forward to Sunday.
00:31:52It's going to be the first Warrior practice in about a month.
00:31:54Well, let's be real, though.
00:31:56During the NBA season, there's not a lot of real hard practice.
00:32:00There's not a lot of practices that you're going to get.
00:32:01Just a few here and there.
00:32:02So, Warriors know when they do get it, they have to be super productive.
00:32:06But a lot of the NBA season is watching film and making mental adjustments
00:32:10and having discussions and finding ways to correct things on the fly.
00:32:15That's just kind of the way, especially in a stretch like the Warriors have been on,
00:32:18where it's road-heavy and the schedule is tumultuous.
00:32:22I ask you this sometimes.
00:32:23If you're sitting on the bench, you know this is not a good three-point shooter team,
00:32:27and then you see them start one of seven.
00:32:30When you check in, you're like, hey, I'm not jumping off, you know, going on three-point shots.
00:32:35I mean, does that even happen, or you just see ball and your natural instincts take over?
00:32:40Yes, well, you should be watching the game and understanding that.
00:32:43You should know that coming in.
00:32:45You know, it's been confirmed by the way the game has started.
00:32:49Grand reverse it.
00:32:50Robert Williams cleans it up.
00:32:52I told you, man, that there's second chance points.
00:32:54I think they're first and second chance points.
00:32:56They are all over the glass.
00:32:58And Robert Williams is saying,
00:33:00hey, my guy has gone to help on the contest of the layup.
00:33:04I'm free to go in and get this offensive rebound.
00:33:06One second left in the corner.
00:33:08Jimmy, he beat the buzzer, but couldn't float it home.
00:33:13So Portland, they shoot it at 54%, 10 second chance points.
00:33:17Yeah, the Blazers are rambunctious and tough to deal with.
00:33:20Up seventh.
00:33:23Our Kaiser Permanente teamwork in action.
00:33:26The 75 title team sweeping the Washington Bullets.
00:33:31They beat Seattle and the Bulls on the way.
00:33:33Rick Barry was the finals MVP.
00:33:36Bill King said it.
00:33:37They are the unbelievable champions of the world.
00:33:40I love it.
00:33:42To sweep 4-0 in the finals.
00:33:45That doesn't happen very often.
00:33:46It's only happened nine times in 80 years in NBA history.
00:33:49Right.
00:33:50So it shows you how good they were.
00:33:52And this is...
00:33:53This is how it gets recognized.
00:33:54Loving members of the team are here.
00:33:56Rick Barry, Jeff Mullins, Clifford Ray, Butch Beard, George Johnson.
00:34:00Along with Jamal Wilkes and Charles Dudley there.
00:34:03I love their shirts.
00:34:04It says togetherness on there.
00:34:06It just shows you they're brothers for life.
00:34:08They've battled.
00:34:09They came through.
00:34:10They were victorious.
00:34:11And they can always reminisce and discuss those beautiful moments they had together.
00:34:15Hey, championships are forever.
00:34:17They are.
00:34:17You know, the Warriors, there's seven of them.
00:34:21Raymond Green on fire there.
00:34:23And that's why the 4 and 8 years, starting in kind of the Steph Curry era, this can be remembered forever.
00:34:28Yeah.
00:34:29I mean, I never got to experience it in the NBA, but got to experience it in high school.
00:34:33And those are still fun conversations to have, going back and talking to your friends.
00:34:37Montae Cook in for Corbin.
00:34:39Robert Williams denied.
00:34:41Warriors want to up their focus level now.
00:34:43They kind of start out, attention to detail lacking a little bit when it comes to defensive rebounding.
00:34:49Raymond down the lane.
00:34:50Butler tried to tip it home.
00:34:51So, Jeremy Grant playing with Javonte Cook.
00:34:56Guys in for three and kind of a wild shot there.
00:34:59Butler spinning into the front court.
00:35:02Jimmy all the way to the iron.
00:35:04This kind of went decent, waiting for Cook to kind of make a move.
00:35:09And he realized he wasn't going to be able to contest well enough, so he just went up with it.
00:35:12But the premise of mind to spin out of that is Jeremy Grant is lunging out.
00:35:17So, buddy, he'll make Grant go left and quick.
00:35:19Most was there to help him out.
00:35:21That's good team defense right there.
00:35:23And he got the rebound.
00:35:26Stop's not completed until you have the rebound.
00:35:28The foul on the reach.
00:35:30And Jimmy heard the whistle and threw it up.
00:35:33He wants it on the shot.
00:35:34He wants it to go down.
00:35:35But look at Jimmy Butler on the fast break.
00:35:36And he spun out of that one.
00:35:38And he's looking right at Cook.
00:35:39Are you coming?
00:35:40Are you coming?
00:35:40Should I pass it to Pods?
00:35:42And he did the right thing because Pods was ahead of him.
00:35:44If he was going to try to get to Pods, he was going to have to throw it through a defender, through Cook.
00:35:48You risk getting a turnover there.
00:35:50Go ahead and power up yourself.
00:35:52Jimmy's ball handling is underrated.
00:35:54It really is.
00:35:54I mean, you catch that in full motion, then spin.
00:35:57Well, he doesn't try to do anything fancy.
00:35:59The spin looked good.
00:36:00But, you know, he's not going to try to sit there and play with it.
00:36:03And Post cut in.
00:36:04And Draymond found him.
00:36:05So, the Warriors keep making baskets that don't count.
00:36:09They're being fouled before the upward shooting motion.
00:36:13Steph had a bucket that didn't count.
00:36:16Jimmy had a bucket that didn't count.
00:36:17Quinton had a bucket that didn't count.
00:36:19You've got to temper your frustration when it comes to making these when it doesn't count.
00:36:23But he's just giving Reith a tough time moving without the ball.
00:36:27Go ahead and cut.
00:36:28It's always a good idea.
00:36:29Warriors are one of the best cutting teams in the league.
00:36:31He has to be winged jumper.
00:36:33Brandon playing off Draymond, playing off Jimmy, playing off Steph.
00:36:37That's when he's at his best.
00:36:39It's when they're all sitting out and he's got to do it by himself or he struggles.
00:36:43Well, Robert Williams is a drop cuter there to work off of that ball screen.
00:36:46You've got some space in the pocket.
00:36:47They're knocked it away, but Grant got it back.
00:36:50And then Draymond's going to be called for a foul.
00:36:52Since that last time out there, I liked how the Warriors have come out.
00:36:54They've up their intensity, more attention to detail.
00:36:58They're getting super active with their hands and they're forcing turnover.
00:37:00It'll be a kickball, not a foul there.
00:37:02So that's good.
00:37:04So just a violation.
00:37:06Yeah.
00:37:07But that's what it takes to win games like this.
00:37:09It's the rambunctious, as you say, team.
00:37:14Wojemski, beautiful steal.
00:37:16Thought about that three.
00:37:17Goes into Reith to make sure he gets the foul.
00:37:20Did you see that mean hesitation?
00:37:22Froze to Obride.
00:37:24Sub-zero.
00:37:26But again, forcing turnovers.
00:37:28Get active with your hands.
00:37:29Make everything tough.
00:37:30Wait a minute.
00:37:30Did you say the fro froze him?
00:37:33Is that what Pojemski just did right there?
00:37:35Team that are here tonight.
00:37:36We also want to honor those that have passed, from Steve Bracey and Mr. Bridges to Derek Dickey,
00:37:43along with CJ, the starting point guard, Charles Johnson, Frank Kendrick, who was such a popular
00:37:49teammate, the incomparable Phil Smith at the off-guard spot.
00:37:53Unbelievable.
00:37:54And then the destroyer, the head coach, the voice of God, our friend Alvin Adels.
00:37:59And Charles Dudley is down courtside.
00:38:02Charles, tell people why they called you the hopper.
00:38:04That was one of my favorite nicknames from that team.
00:38:06Hey, can I add one person in there, if you don't mind?
00:38:09Joe Roberts.
00:38:10Joe Roberts.
00:38:10Joe Roberts.
00:38:10Yeah.
00:38:10Joe Roberts.
00:38:11Yeah.
00:38:12Assistant coach.
00:38:13Assistant coach.
00:38:13Yeah.
00:38:14And that was the first year that Al Alts ever had an assistant coach, was that year, in
00:38:17the 74-75 season.
00:38:19Before that, he ran the Warriors by himself.
00:38:21Now, your shirts say togetherness.
00:38:25It's a lifelong bond.
00:38:27Fifty years ago, and that team was so close, you played ten guys, and, I mean, it's the first
00:38:33time the Warriors ever won one on the West Coast.
00:38:35Why the togetherness?
00:38:37I think we bonded.
00:38:39We bonded at training camp in Hawaii.
00:38:41And from that point on, we hung out together.
00:38:47We spent time together.
00:38:48We trained together on the road.
00:38:53We ate together.
00:38:54We went to movie theaters, went to theater together.
00:38:57So it became one.
00:38:58That's why 50 years later, we're still like, it was like yesterday.
00:39:03And then when you're, at the beginning of the year, when you're dealing with adversity,
00:39:08when they said that you're only expected to win 20 games the whole year, and then you
00:39:12come up and win the NBA championship, and 4-0 in the fourth year, you're going to be
00:39:18the finals and becoming the third team in NBA history to do that, and there's only nine
00:39:23right now.
00:39:24That allows you, because once you win something, you never, once you learn something big, it
00:39:29always will, it will be big for, for each, each individual.
00:39:33So, so Charles, I wasn't born in 75.
00:39:35Here, here's a look at Pojemski going back door.
00:39:39So, excuse some of my questions, but what was basketball like back then?
00:39:43And when you see today's NBA game, the fast pace, all the threes being shot, how much fun
00:39:48would it have been for you to play in a style like this?
00:39:51Because you could penetrate, you were great with the ball, your ball handling, you were
00:39:55fast, getting up and down the floor, getting to the rim, all those different things.
00:39:58How much fun would it be for you to play in a similar style as today?
00:40:01Oh, it'd be unbelievable, you know, because, like I said, I was, I could, you know, I could
00:40:07handle the ball, you'd be left the right, I was very quick, had a lot of speed, and, and
00:40:13I penetrated a lot.
00:40:14So, this would be an ideal situation for me, you know, especially if I had the opportunity
00:40:19to play with someone like Steph Curry, because they would definitely have to guard me and I
00:40:25can, you know, dump it off to Steph Curry, and, you know, for wide open shots, you know,
00:40:29guys, you know, so, I'm on with the rebound, coming into the front court, we're talking
00:40:32to Charles Dudley with the Blazers leading by three, Quentin Post, ties the game, and Charles
00:40:39relate the story of Clifford Ray asking the coaches and Rick Barry to leave and say, all
00:40:46right, guys, anyone else in here can score 35 points a game, let's ride this guy, let's
00:40:52realize he's a perfectionist, and, and let's just deal with the Rick that we have and the
00:40:57brilliance that he has.
00:40:58Well, I think I was, that was, I was, that was part of, uh, Clifford Ray's leadership.
00:41:03You know, he got, he got traded, uh, for Nate Thurman, you know, Nate the Great, and so
00:41:09Nate was a main figure here, uh, as long as it goes, 13 or 14 years, so when Clifford came
00:41:16in, uh, Rick picked him up at the airport.
00:41:20Mm-hmm, and that started, that started our relationship, and from that point on, uh, Rick,
00:41:26I mean, uh, Clifford knew after the first three or four practices that there, that there were
00:41:32some kind of ill feelings against Rick, and that we needed, we needed everyone, we needed
00:41:37all our teammates to buy into what we were trying to do, you know, and, well, Clifford said,
00:41:45asked Al, can we, can, um, can I talk to the players, and Al said, yes, but see, that's
00:41:50Al's, that's Al's leadership also, because, you know, that takes a lot for a coach to make
00:41:53that kind of decision, and, and, um, give power to a, a player, and what, and what he did
00:41:59was, he said, can any of you guys score 35 points tonight like Rick, and no one raised their
00:42:05hand, no one, you know, and, but that was, that was a part of everyone finding their role
00:42:14in that team, because there was a lot of scorers on that team, a lot of, a lot of very good
00:42:19players, but for us to win, we needed Rick, and we needed other players to take a role,
00:42:25and that's what, that's, that's how we achieved our success that year, and, and, and to your
00:42:30point, Charles, like, we talked about with the Warriors today, and guys playing off his
00:42:35Steph, and Jimmy, and staying aggressive, what was your mentality when you do see a guy
00:42:39like Rick Barry having the kind of series he was in the finals, and winning the finals MVP
00:42:43average at almost 30 a game, how do you balance playing off of him, looking for your own, you're
00:42:50a point guard, so you're in charge of making sure everybody else is feeling good, but you
00:42:53still have to be a threat out there, right, well, I, you know, I pick, I pick my, my points
00:42:58in the game, that, that I thought that, that they would not be focusing on me, they would
00:43:03be focusing on, uh, Jamal Wilkes, Rick Barry, uh, Phil Smith, because, you know, Phil and
00:43:09I came in together during that time, so only we came in together in, in the game, and, um,
00:43:15Rick, I knew that I could score, because I scored 17.5 points a game in the University of
00:43:22Washington, so I could score, but so could Butch Beard, so could Phil Smith, so could Jamal
00:43:27Wilkes, so I made it, you know, I made it, I took my, I took my spots when I could cut
00:43:33score, and then it didn't allow them to, you know, back off me too much.
00:43:37Hey, Charles, how about game four against Washington, when they send Mike Reardon
00:43:40out to try to fight Rick, to get him ejected, and Al Adels goes out and cleans things up, Al
00:43:46gets ejected, Rick stays in the game, and to get the sweep, what was that like, knowing that
00:43:50Reardon was kind of set out there to, to start a fight. Yeah, because they knew, you know,
00:43:56they were down 3-0, right? They knew if they could just take Rick out, then, you know, Rick
00:44:01scoring 30 points a game, and then Mike, you know, Mike Reardon, I was scoring, I think
00:44:06he's probably more than 16 or 17 points a game. They thought that was going to be a major
00:44:09advantage, but, you know, Rick was smart enough to not, you know, get into a, you know, tussling
00:44:16contest with him, a foul, you know, tussling combat or a fight, at that time, but he knew
00:44:20how important he was to the team. But then, also, they knew Al would protect his players.
00:44:26Mm-hmm. So, you, you, people don't realize Al was a guy that, that we never wanted to disappoint,
00:44:33and, and we respected him. So, we did everything possible to make that team win, and Al was the,
00:44:40you know, the, the cause, the cause of, of winning, because we knew, we knew the,
00:44:46the pressure on Al to win that championship, um, because we were born in the championship,
00:44:50and we had two, first time ever, have two black coaches, you know, Casey Jones, and Al, and
00:44:56then you had, uh, two black coaches, assistant coaches. So, it was a, a lot of, a lot of things
00:45:02that were going, a lot of things were the issues then that, that we needed to, we went out to
00:45:08win, and we wanted to set the tone for how the NBA would progress later, later in, in the
00:45:14years. You know, and that was the whole thing. With that change, and with that success, the
00:45:19league, you know, the League of the Copycat League, and, and with that change, and, uh,
00:45:25other play, African American players, and coach, African American coaches, got an opportunity
00:45:29to coach at, at that level. But Al, Al, every time that there was an issue, he would stand up
00:45:36for it. So, we, you know, his leadership, his leadership is one, one of the things that I think
00:45:42that always should be a part of the Warriors organization, his leadership, and what he did
00:45:49for the organization for 50 years. Now, early on, and it was not that year, but Al was a
00:45:53player coach. Would that work in today's NBA? No, no, no, not, not even a chance. But see,
00:45:59Al, Al was a player. Players, he knew what to do. He knew that if you had players on the bench,
00:46:08right, that were not playing, they would not be into the game. I mean, what he did, he had
00:46:1510, he had 10 players that played on a record basis. And that was the key to our success. Uh, because
00:46:21if we needed some, we needed scoring, we had it. If we needed a rebound, players, and we needed,
00:46:25we needed somebody that blocked shots, we had it. So, very few, very few teams matched up with us
00:46:32during that period of time. Foul on Klingon. Hey, Charles, thanks for joining us. We'll see you on
00:46:37the postgame thing with the season ticket holders. So happy you're here. Yeah. The 50-year anniversary,
00:46:41and so proud to honor you guys. Okay. Thank you. Thank you very much. That is the hopper, Charles
00:46:45Dudley. Spending some time with us. We'll hear from Rick Barry in the third quarter. But, yeah,
00:46:50Kay, in game four of that series, now, I'm a little kid, so that was Bill King was my announcer.
00:46:55I'm nine years old. Like, that was my team. They sent out a guy to fight Rick Barry to get him
00:47:00rejected in the finals game. It's wild. Except, they didn't realize that allies would jump in and say,
00:47:06you want to fight somebody? Bring it on. I love that. I got your back.
00:47:12Man, what a time that must have been. I'd love to go back and see highlights of that time. Like,
00:47:18they were clearly running over the Washington Bullets. That's, that's Wes Unsell. That's Elvin Hayes.
00:47:23That was a great Washington team. A Range Rover engineered to win, and we had fun with this in Miami.
00:47:31Three guys that have coached a thousand games with just one franchise. It's Pops, Bo, and,
00:47:36and our own Al Adels. And I was actually going to ask him, too, how much was defense the point of
00:47:41emphasis for you guys? Because I know back then it was much more low scoring. But they were top five.
00:47:45But they were top five. Yeah. Top two offense. Yeah. What was crazy was the Bulls series,
00:47:50the games were in the 70s and low 80s, even though the Warriors averaged 108 during the game. So,
00:47:54they had to win some rock fights to beat Chicago in seven games. Right. Whether you think about those teams that
00:47:59were good offensively, how much was defense's, did you get Kamara knocking down the three?
00:48:04How much was defense the thing that sparked their offense? Right. How much did they get offense off
00:48:09of their defense? But it was unusual to play 10 guys. And that's what Alvin did. You know,
00:48:15as Charles said, to make sure everybody felt a part of the team, but also the depth war teams down.
00:48:19Yeah. And obviously, they all had so much respect for Al Adels as their coach,
00:48:24especially after he showed he has their back. He was the best.
00:48:29Hurry driving. Horford just keep clinging off the glass. Warrior lead at one. They're shooting at 47%.
00:48:36We're making it a little tougher for the Blazers to score at the rim. And we've seen a little bit of
00:48:40everything from the Blazers. They've been in the zone here, and I think they're going to play the zone a lot more.
00:48:44That's one of their philosophies, too. Tiago's footer talked about it, Steph.
00:48:48Cutting back door, took the contact, loaded up and in. What I tell you, he's getting so much better
00:48:54at this. Jumping back into defenders. Look at him pointing at the bench. And again, the defender
00:48:59can't keep himself in between Steph from the basket, overplaying it too much. Watch Murray here.
00:49:05Like, oh, I got to overplay. I got to make sure he doesn't come out and get a three. And Steph just fakes
00:49:10like he's coming off of that screen. Goes straight back door. This is one of the things that's so hard
00:49:15to do. I was watching that Mind the Game podcast with LeBron James and Steve Nash. By the way,
00:49:20it's amazing to hear LeBron James, one of the greatest players that's ever lived,
00:49:23talk about how tough it is to deal with Steph. But the off-ball movement. Yep.
00:49:27This is the most annoying part. He even says, like, the favorite thing for him to hear from
00:49:32opposing defenders. And a lot of times it happens when he's at the free throw line. It's like,
00:49:35man, stop moving so much. As soon as they say that, he's like, I got him.
00:49:39LeBron Love bottoming a three. I want to mention he got subbed out. With Steph having eight and
00:49:45Jimmy having six, Pajewski's 13 off the bench. That's what the Warriors are looking for. A third
00:49:50guy to kick in and help Steph and Jimmy. Murray with the turnover there. Murray is fouled by GP2.
00:50:01So Steph did come to a jump stop. That was good. But then he just didn't have anywhere to go. And
00:50:08Murray was there in the passing lane. It's just restraint. That's a pass I can't throw. Hold on to
00:50:14it a little longer. Pivot. Turn around. Look around. Hopefully someone pops open. But then
00:50:19everybody else has to move. When Steph is in the paint like that, get some movement. His outlet should
00:50:23be pretty clear. So Keegan Murray right-handed. His twin brother Chris is left-handed. And Jack in the box
00:50:29says, let me see that second free throw. The best rated burger and fast food with more beef than a
00:50:34Big Mac. Keep up, Ronald.
00:50:39One of two, but Klingon got the rebound and then he's fouled. So it's easier said than done saying,
00:50:45hey, rebound, rebound. The size of the Blazers and their relentless effort on the glass, it's why
00:50:51they lead the league in second chance points. I guess his ankle is fine. Yes, it is. But
00:50:56it's so hard to push him away from the basket. He's so big. He gets great position. And if he's already
00:51:04able to start even at the, you know, you got the low man there and then the second position there on
00:51:10the free throw line, the man in between, that's pretty close for him to start in there. He can just
00:51:14kind of push you in from there. Well, think about it. It's 7'3", 280. Is he the largest guy in the NBA?
00:51:19No. Who's more than 280 pounds? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I was about to say, like, talking about height-wise.
00:51:26No, I'm saying 7'3", 280. That's the biggest mass of any player I think we have in the league.
00:51:30Yeah. Steph Curry, he is not the biggest player in the league, but he's the best shooter of all time.
00:51:36He might have the biggest heart.
00:51:37Abdiah almost didn't catch that.
00:51:44Abdiah at 6'9". Moody made him go left and GP2 was there. I think Kamara hits the three. I mean,
00:51:50that's where you played it right. Credit to Monty Kamara for hitting the triple.
00:51:55Just going, draw and kick there. GP2 helped off and made a pay.
00:52:00Curry spinning in the lane. Touchback to Horford for three. Got it!
00:52:05Pretty play there. A little hot potato action. Steph rejected the screen. They all had to help with him.
00:52:11Give it back to GP2. He's a great decision maker. Now, missing there. Three guys on the glass.
00:52:16And Horford coming away with it.
00:52:21Steph wheeling around Horford. He's got the big man clinging on him. He wants it back.
00:52:25All right, I'm going to shoot over you. Curry with another three.
00:52:29Hey! Okay. The chef is cooking up something nice again. They're trying to get Klingen involved in the action.
00:52:36And Steph is taking advantage. If they want to switch on to him, Steph is saying, this is great news.
00:52:43All right, Murray. Shot clock at seven. That one deflected. Still Portland ball.
00:52:50Workers are getting super active with their hands now.
00:52:53Well, look at Steph. Like, give it right back to me. Steph is willing to give it up.
00:52:57His teammates are going to do the right thing. Klinging, you're too far away.
00:53:00The giant killer. I tell you what he is. You said LeBron on the podcast, you know,
00:53:05hey, Steph's so dangerous without the ball. Hey, stop moving.
00:53:09They should have a podcast of just all tall people that Steph has tortured.
00:53:14Because Biggs are like, no.
00:53:16Yeah, that is a long list. Long list. Klingin. Skillful. He's got some game in there.
00:53:23And he won two championships at UConn. He was the center that kind of handled everything inside.
00:53:29And more and more bigs are getting so much better when it comes to short rolls and having game
00:53:35not rolling all the way to the basket. Pulling up, push shots, mid-range like that.
00:53:40Here's the relocate for Steph. Draymond set the screen. That is beautiful warrior basketball.
00:53:46Those guys have been doing it for 14 years together. There is nothing better. And that's one of the
00:53:51reasons Steph is so lethal off the ball, because you've got guys like Draymond Green,
00:53:55telecommunic- wait, telepathic communication. Caleb Love gets his own rebound on the three,
00:54:01and then draws the foul. And that Draymond screen and drop pass. I could watch this forever.
00:54:11They make beautiful music together. Steph moving without the ball. Draymond has a Steph radar,
00:54:19crashes into Kamara, knocks that one down. Warrior's up five right now.
00:54:23Now, our Volvo for life. 1975, the Bulls were in the West. The Western Conference Finals,
00:54:32Game 7, May 14th. How do I know that? It was my birthday. Sloan, Van Leer, Chet Walker, Bob Love,
00:54:39Tom Borwinkle with CJ and Phil Smith and Jamal Wilks, George Johnson and Clifford Ray at the center spot,
00:54:46and Rick Barry 83-79. And the underhand free throw is good. How about that? Nice.
00:54:55Rick Barry watching. You got Rick Barry's approval there. Wait a minute. 83-79. You mentioned defense,
00:55:02and that team had to win a rock fight to win Game 7 against Chicago. The Bulls were in the West.
00:55:09Correct. Correct. Okay. Okay. Interesting. Yeah, that's before my time, but I'm always interested
00:55:18in how things were back then. Well, I'm telling you, I have got to get you some of the Bill King
00:55:24audio. Yeah, you told me about that. That series. That made me want to be a broadcaster. Yeah.
00:55:28Yeah. That's my idol. That's awesome. Nine-year-old kid listening to Bill King on the
00:55:32radio for a Game 7. It's one of my, on my birthday? Just like one of the greatest memories of my life.
00:55:38It's a good birthday gift. Although 83-79, there were a lot of misses in that game.
00:55:45You got to keep defending it. See what happens. Someone will break free offensively. Warriors
00:55:50earned the bonus here. See if they can close this half straw. Step over Klingen again.
00:55:54Save result. Curry's got 20. 15 in the corner. Did you see Klingen? He just threw up his hand.
00:56:02Like, what am I supposed to do? You put me on an island with this guy. I'm going to get worked.
00:56:07Draymond on Avdia. And then just that little touch. He fouled him and he still floated it in. How
00:56:13about that? Man. Avdia, I love his mentality. And this is Steph working the big man. Let's play
00:56:20with him for a little bit. He's got the handle. But just a subtle step back. He gets such easy
00:56:27separation. And you saw Coach Kerr on the bench there just smiling. Like,
00:56:31you don't normally see that with a coach. But even Coach Kerr is like, man, this man is great.
00:56:36So, Avdia out of Israel was the ninth pick by Washington. Traded for Kispert and others.
00:56:41He's averaging. He was the MVP of the Eurobasket. He was incredible. Averaging 26 a game. Like,
00:56:46you have career high all across the board last season. And you're not satisfied. Whoa, Jimmy Butler.
00:56:54The spinning layup and the foul. The English on that. Fantastic.
00:57:01So, Jeremy Grant immediately. Look how much he's opened up. And Jibo's like, oh, you want to give
00:57:06me that direction? Okay, I'm going to go that direction. And he saw the rest of the defense.
00:57:10He's looking, are they going to be able to stop me? He wasn't worried about getting past Jeremy Grant.
00:57:14He's only worried about Klingon and that next guy coming over, who is Kamara, who kind of curled
00:57:20around there to contest that. And he figured it out with that English. So, Jimmy Butler now
00:57:26completed the three-point play. He's got nine. Steph's got 20. Pajemski 13. Kamara 15. Klingon 13.
00:57:32And Obdi 11 to go with his seven assists for Portland.
00:57:38You put Draymond on Obdi and then send him through the defense. And Obdi all the way to the rim.
00:57:44He's got all that in his game. The step throughs, the Euro steps, the decel. He's got pods,
00:57:48air pods, one-foot decel. They're going to have to double-team him in the second half. Yeah.
00:57:52I mean, his passing is great, but he's killing the Warriors right now.
00:57:55Oh, we've got Pajemski. That's Steph's play off of Steph and Draymond. That's what Brandon does best.
00:58:01Why wouldn't you set as many screens or cross paths with Steph as many times
00:58:06as you can? Because your defender's going to go with him. That's what happened there.
00:58:09So, double-team Obdi right there and come up with a steal. Send that second defender.
00:58:16And he didn't settle for that early clock three. Oh, Klingon. Steph's stuck back again.
00:58:2423 and 18 in the corner. That time, Jeremy Grant came to help. He can get some, too.
00:58:32The human torch is lit and the flame burns on at home. Obdi down the lane. Again, keeping your body
00:58:40in between him and the basket. Jimmy Butler just kind of jumped out trying to deny him.
00:58:45So, about a two-second game shot clock difference. Kamara knows how hot Steph is. The Warriors are like,
00:58:51get him another shot. You could use Steph as a decoy now, too. Just set a ball screen.
00:58:56Draymond making sure they milk the clock. You got Klingon again. Drop it back to Draymond.
00:59:02Try to get it back to Steph. He was still in bounds. And out of bounds, the 24-second violation.
00:59:09Well, now you got one second here. He'll probably get a heave up. But you've had a great second quarter.
00:59:16Much better with the defensive rebounding. Much better attention to detail.
00:59:19Abdi, uh, that's a long second. Missed that with the heave.
00:59:27So, Steph Curry, six straight threes, 23 points, 18 in that second quarter.
00:59:35But watch him leave Klingon in the dust with this mean step back. Best step back in the league. Klingon can do anything about it.
00:59:42Jeremy Grant saw it too late. Steph's smiling, styling on him, too. What a half for him.
00:59:49So, Brandon Pajemski is going to join us. He's asking C.J. Washington about a move in that quarter.
00:59:54But for the Warriors, you shoot it at 59 percent. 11 of 21 on threes.
