How is Christ both God and the Son of God?
Can anyone claim ignorance of the existence of a Creator God?
How does God reveal himself and how does he react to those who refuse to hear him?
The discussion walks through Romans 10:11–21, tracing Paul’s argument that salvation is for all who call on the Lord, with no distinction between Jew and Greek, while explaining that “calling on God’s name” means trusting Him for rescue, not using a magic formula. The group examines Paul’s Old Testament quotes (Isaiah 28, Joel 2, Isaiah 52, Psalm 19, Deuteronomy 32, Isaiah 65) to show how faith comes by hearing, why preaching and being sent matter, and why many who hear still disobey. They emphasize God’s “riches” as spiritual transformation rather than prosperity, note creation’s witness to God, and explore God using Gentile belief to provoke Israel to jealousy while still holding out His hands to a disobedient people. The session ends highlighting Romans’ focus on uniting Jew and Gentile in Messiah.

00:01welcome back journey through the book of romans so let's start off reading from romans 10 11
00:08just backing up a little bit for the scripture says everyone who believes in him will not be
00:14put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek for the same lord is lord of all
00:19bestowing his riches on all who call on him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord
00:24will be saved how then will they call on him in whom they have not believed and how are they
00:30to
00:30believe in him of whom they have never heard and how are they to hear without someone preaching
00:34and how are they to preach unless they are sent as it is written how beautiful are the feet of
00:40those
00:40who preach the good news but they have not all obeyed the gospel for isaiah says lord who has
00:46believed what he has heard from us so faith comes from hearing and hearing to the word of christ
00:50but i ask have they not heard indeed they have for their voice has gone out to all the earth
00:55and
00:56their words to the ends of the world but i ask did israel not understand for moses says i will
01:02make
01:02you jealous of those who are not a nation with a foolish nation i will make you angry then isaiah
01:08is so bold as to say i have been found by those who did not seek me i have shown
01:12myself to those who
01:13did not ask for me but of israel he says all day long i have held out my hands to
01:18a disobedient and
01:19contrary people all right we have a bunch of quotes in this in this passage and in the next chapter
01:27too
01:28uh let's see let me find my notes buried on my desktop back to verse 11 all right so this
01:36one
01:36was from isaiah 28 16 let me go back to that one real quick isaiah 28 16 therefore thus says
01:44the lord
01:45god behold i am laying in zion a stone a tested stone a costly cornerstone for the foundation
01:51firmly placed he who believes in it will not be disturbed uh in other translations say will not
01:57be put to haste and i think i suspect that that was an idiom for being put to shame you
02:04know for if
02:05if you are having to hurry that means that you forgot to do something like you know you forgot to
02:10harvest the crops or you forgot to clean the house before visitors are coming that that kind of thing
02:16and i think this alludes to the same idea that yeshua was talking about in the parable of the ten
02:21virgins you know the five were prepared and they were ready with oil in their lamps but the other five
02:28were not and they had to hasten to go back to the market and buy more oil and so they
02:33missed the
02:33groom when he arrived and so they were put to shame in having to hasten because they were unprepared
02:41all right so verse 12 there is no distinction between jew and greek for the same lord is lord
02:47of all bestowing his riches on all who call on him for everyone who calls on the name of the
02:53lord
02:53will be saved of course that was verses 12 and 13 yeah go go ahead and read let me look
02:59that up
03:02232 yeah go ahead and read that verse and it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the
03:08name
03:09of the lord shall be saved or in mount zion jerusalem there shall be those who escape as the lord
03:18has said
03:18and among the survivors shall be those whom the lord calls all right so this is it's describing the day
03:26of the lord and god is saying that he's going to be displaying wonders in in the sky and on
03:32the earth
03:32blood fire smoke it's a time of calamity and but anyone who calls on the name of yahweh will be
03:41will
03:41be delivered and you know calling on his name doesn't mean saying the name yahweh or yehovah or
03:47however you pronounce it that's not what that's about anybody can say that name what they mean is
03:53calling on him for rescue and which means you're going to you're trusting him if you're calling out to
04:01somebody to save you that means that you believe that that person can save you and if you don't
04:06believe it then just calling his name out doesn't really do anything it's not a magic word yeah a lot
04:13of people like to treat his name as if it's a magic incantation and you have to spell it right
04:18and say it
04:18right or it doesn't have any effect but that's not the point the point is who are you calling on
04:24and when you call on his name it means you're calling on who he is you know who he is
04:30he is
04:31your savior and your creator your god and if you call on his name then you are recognizing that and
04:37acknowledging that that is true that's actually that quote is the one in verse 13 so i'm kind of
04:44getting ahead of myself a little bit there back in verse 12 paul says there is no distinction
04:50between jew and greek for the same lord is lord of all but in other places paul does talk about
04:58differences for example uh the gospel comes first to the jew and then to the greek well there's a
05:05difference uh so what does he mean what do you all think that paul means when he says there's no
05:11distinction between jew and greek it just seems like there's no distinction before god between jew and greek
05:20well isn't when when the scripture says that the gospel comes to the jew first and then to the greek
05:26and when yeshua says that he only came for the lost sheep of the house of israel isn't that a
05:30distinction before god yeah but in the context of what he's talking about you mean in the context of
05:38right of eternal salvation and being rescued from god yeah yeah okay do you want to add anything to that
05:45kevin no i was just gonna say the same thing okay yeah and i agree with that just lord of
05:51it not just
05:52lord of the israelites he's lord of everyone and the ones who call upon him shall be saved yeah and
06:01we can also look to the uh to peter's vision in acts 10 where you know peter it followed jewish
06:10customs
06:10for the most part where when he was you know you're not allowed to go to the house of the
06:15gentile you're
06:16not allowed to eat there because you never know i mean the gentile wasn't following rules of ritual
06:22cleanliness you don't know where that food has been you don't know if it was bled properly and they
06:27even had suspicions that that gentiles would deliberately taint their food you know put put some
06:34sprinkles of bacon on your in your egg salad or you know whatever just because you they knew you
06:41were a jew and didn't eat that and really to be honest i i that's not an entirely unreasonable
06:47suspicion because i actually know of people who will do that i know we we have friends who their
06:55own family will sneak pork products or other things to their children even though they believe that
07:03that god still forbids eating pork to all believers jew or gentile and you know i don't i don't see
07:12that
07:12particular belief as a requirement for salvation there are very few beliefs that i that i think are
07:20qualifier for salvation but i agree with it you know i think that we're not supposed to eat pork
07:27and it's okay if people disagree with me i'm not gonna not gonna argue about that too much that's
07:32really beside the point point i'm trying to make is that's not an unreasonable suspicion for jews to have
07:40but because of things like that the jews put a separation between jews and gentiles like if you're a jew
07:47you're not allowed to go and eat at the house of a gentile because you might be defiled and then
07:51you
07:51might defile somebody else or you know go to the temple and not know that you're in a state of
07:56defilement and so they would call gentiles common there's there are things that are holy whether it's
08:06clean or unclean if it's holy then it's sacred and set apart for god and gentiles are common and can't
08:11be sacred but god told peter that gentiles can become sacred they can become set apart people for
08:18god and we shouldn't call anybody common when god has declared them that they are not common
08:25go ahead kevin just wanted to piggyback on what you said about the eating pork and things of that nature
08:35i think that you know i could say as a as a christian it is difficult when people that profess
08:46to be
08:48believers in our in our lord when they don't respect our god right they don't respect me they
08:59think that they have the liberty to do whatever they want and they create their own rules and they
09:05don't like our culture is notorious for that in the family structure my belief is the family structure
09:17is where everything all starts and so when we don't have rules for our children or whatnot
09:24that that that is is not good and so we grow up into adults not caring for rules and you
09:32know it's okay
09:33if you break this rule and i think the israelite people the hebrew people they look at a lot of
09:41the
09:41christians they just get mad because they're in in in their eyes be respectful and they fear god
09:53and so by doing that by not by not obeying him that i've seen that i think that could be
10:02a reason why
10:03a lot of them do get frustrated in a sense but it's just because christianity has become this thing where
10:16you know again you don't need to do anything to be saved you're saved and then you get into heaven
10:23but then there's scripture that talks about obeying and those who are in the lord will obey and that
10:29doesn't mean that you're going to have this perfect obedience you're going to struggle with the flesh
10:35but you're going to have this desire to live by the spirit
10:40and i love how galatians puts it very clear the spirit versus flesh and it talks about that stuff
10:49i just believe that when you look at the hebrew people that they do here they are
10:59following like again this gets into the old like if i if i'm speaking about david
11:06i know david is with the lord right um he respected god and daniel and all these people
11:14they they wouldn't eat the king's meat we just don't have that anymore in america
11:20and i think especially christianity in general just it it comes across as very little fear of god
11:28right yeah yeah and i think you know that's that's one of the respects in which
11:36god does not make a distinction between jew and greek or is native-born israelite and gentile
11:42is that if if you fear god and you trust him to the point where you are willing to call
11:47on his name
11:47and you know who he is that he is the all-powerful creator of the universe who keeps his promises
11:54and
11:56wants to rescue people then he's going to rescue you he will save you
12:03that doesn't mean that he always rescues you from you know temporary conditions here on earth
12:09if you are poor and you cry out to god and rescue me from this poverty he might not necessarily
12:17rescue
12:17you from that poverty because there could be a reason that he has you in it because that's not
12:23what he said he came to do he rescues his nation from poverty if they are keeping his commandments
12:31and sometimes the circumstances you are in are leading you to be to being who he wants you to be
12:38and so he doesn't always rescue you from unpleasantness but he will rescue you from
12:47condemnation and he doesn't differentiate between jew and gentile in that respect you know he rescued
12:53rahab who was a canaanite that's that's the best example i don't i don't think i need to give more
12:59than that i'd have to think about it and then have to look them up to make sure i was
13:03getting the
13:03context right and that would just be another distraction so when he says bestowing his riches
13:08on all who call on him he's not talking about wealth this is probably another place that prosperity
13:16gospel preachers will go to to say see you know if you ask god for abundance he will give you
13:22abundance
13:23well he will but he might give you abundantly of something you didn't necessarily expect
13:28and it's rarely going to be physical wealth that doesn't mean that wealth is bad that he doesn't
13:34want people to be healthy and wealthy and all that but sometimes that just doesn't serve his purposes
13:40and it's not the best thing for you and god always knows what is best for you so bestowing his
13:45riches
13:46on all who call on him can be wisdom can be understanding of his character it can be transforming you
13:54into the image of his son so that you can be a blessing to the people around you those are
13:59all the forms
13:59of riches that god bestows on people whether you are a jew or a gentile
14:04and of course as we pointed out earlier eternal salvation is not dependent on your ancestry or your
14:10the culture you came from it depends solely on your relationship to god any anything else else in
14:18these two verses that we need to talk about or that anybody has questions about okay if not then
14:25move on verses 14 and 15 oh actually let me go back to verse 13 there's something else here i
14:33want to
14:33to talk about in joel i'm going to bring this up another bible over here on the screen
14:40the last half of this verse joel 232 from mount zion and in jerusalem there will be those who escape
14:47as
14:47the lord had said even among the survivors whom the lord calls so in the first half of the verse
14:54it's the people calling on god and in the last half of the verse it's god calling on those people
15:01so in the first half when people call on god they are calling on who he is because you are
15:08this kind
15:09of being rescue me i know that you can and i know that you you want to rescue people who
15:15love and fear
15:15you so here i am rescue me on the other side god is looking for people who love and fear
15:23him and he
15:24wants to call them and it's he's not just calling people to repentance because those are the people
15:30who who call on him in the beginning the calling at the end even among the survivors whom the lord
15:37calls this is talking about people who he has already rescued you know he the people have called out
15:44for rescue he's rescued a remnant of the people of israel and then he calls a segment out of those
15:51you know a remnant within the remnant and in this case these are you know just like there are different
15:59kinds of righteousness that we talked about before there's uh the righteousness that is imputed to you
16:04from yeshua you know his righteousness is perfect because he never sinned but then there's your own
16:10personal righteousness you know once you are forgiven and god is zeroed out your debt of sin
16:17well now the good deeds that you do have a positive impact on your eternal state not just on your
16:24life
16:24here so there are different kinds of righteousness but there's also different kinds of calling you know
16:30some people we're all called to repent and some of us respond and but out of those who respond
16:38some are called to be apostles some are called to be prophets and and teachers and judges and
16:46accountants and health professionals you know we all have god has called us all to do things
16:54and our calling isn't necessarily the same although there is no distinction between one person and
17:02another person in the sense that if they call out to god for salvation he saves them he forgives anybody
17:08of their sins who legitimately repents and begs him for mercy but once you're past that point god does
17:18treat people differently some people he calls to something higher or more i mean i think he calls
17:24everybody to something everybody has some kind of mission to accomplish in god's kingdom but not
17:31everybody is called to be president not everybody is called to be an apostle or a pastor setting aside
17:40the definition of pastor for the moment does that make sense the idea of there being different kinds of
17:48calling a calling a calling to salvation and repentance and then a calling to service i'll take that as a
17:54yes
17:55okay anyways uh i think that's important to the context of romans because paul spends so much time
18:02talking about calling in yeah especially in previous chapters okay so now let's go on to verse 14
18:10how then will they call on him in whom they have not believed and how are they to believe in
18:15him of whom
18:15they have never heard and how are they to hear without someone preaching and how are they to preach
18:20unless they are sent as it is written how beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news
18:26okay in the first part this is also harking back to joel 2 32 how will they call on him
18:33whom they have
18:34not believed and how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard so in joel 2
18:4032 we have
18:40this remnant who has called on god and they're saved and now god calls on a subgroup of this remnant
18:48and one of the things he calls them to is to go back out and call out more of the
18:53remnant
18:55so it becomes a positive feedback cycle god brings out people from the world and then commissions them
19:03to go back out into the world and bring out more people and that is i think we're going to
19:09get to the
19:10point to the verse a little bit later that says uh that faith comes through hearing and hearing by the
19:14word of god well someone has to go out and speak the word of god to people and a both
19:24calvinists and
19:25provisionists and arminians will all go to this passage to talk about how god's how this mechanism
19:32of calling works that god sends people to the people that he has already chosen or he sends people out
19:39to convince
19:39the people to repent whichever it is he's still using people to go out and bring in the people who
19:48are willing
19:49to repent or destined to repent however you want to look at it and so it's important for those people
19:56who have been
19:57called to hear the calling and respond to it and i can't i can't tell you what your calling in
20:04life
20:04is or how you are supposed to go out and talk to other people but i can tell you that
20:08you do have a
20:09calling you know whether that is purely a calling of service like just to help people or to advise people
20:18or whether you are called are called to go out and stand on a street corner and preach hellfire and
20:25damnation to crowds of strangers i'm certain that god has called people to do that i seriously doubt
20:31that i will ever be one of them but i have my role too and that's what i am trying
20:37to do here
20:38any other comments on the first part of this of these uh two verses yes i could just say verse
20:4414
20:45okay all right let's see in the second part so how are they to preach unless they are sent of
20:55course
20:55he's talking about the uh the people who are called again uh this other part how beautiful are the feet
21:02of those who preach good news that is from isaiah 52 7 pull that one up
21:13how lovely on the feet sorry how lovely on the feet how lovely on the mountains are the feet of
21:21him who brings good news who pronounces peace and brings good news of happiness who announces
21:26salvation and says to zion your god reigns i think that last sentence is significant i mean it's all
21:32significant but who says to zion your god reigns this is part of what it means to call on the
21:39name
21:39of god it's not enough just to go out and say god is love or jesus saves saves from what
21:48what does love
21:49mean the entire gospel message is us to include the identity and the power of god and the consequences
21:57for ignoring him he is the king if you don't obey the laws of the king there will be consequences
22:04and if but if you know if you are in the king's favor if you're in his good graces there
22:09are great
22:09rewards for that and so a big part of enabling people to call on god's name is to teach them
22:16god's
22:16name which is not as i said earlier teaching them to say yahweh or yehovah or yahuwah or whichever version
22:24you prefer that is almost irrelevant it's teaching people about who god is that he is the creator of the
22:31universe that he has made these these certain promises and he has expectations of his people
22:37and he keeps his promises and he holds his people to those expectations that's what it means that your
22:43god reigns and that is the message that those called out ones need to be carrying with them to enable
22:51people to call on that name am i making sense yes paula says yes bill gates is not the king
22:59of the universe
23:00and bill gates is not the king of the universe i don't know if you heard that he might think
23:04he is
23:09okay you know feet are feet are not necessarily pretty they're not something that there are some
23:17strange people out there in the world but in general feet are ugly but they are redeemed by and made
23:24beautiful by carrying that that the evangelist the one who's bringing the good news by carrying him
23:30to the door of the law so that they can be redeemed to it and you know that's i i'm
23:36sure that this you
23:37know how beautiful out of the feet of those that was probably another idiom at some time saying
23:44this is what beautiful feet you have coming to my door with such great news and everybody knowing that
23:50especially when everybody's out there walking around barefoot or wearing sandals at best that
23:55everybody's feet are dirty and hairy and gross again i saw that you had unmuted a second ago was there
24:01something you wanted to add no no okay um okay if there are no other thoughts on these two verses
24:10we'll move ahead to verse 16 and i think at this pace we're going to get ahead of where i
24:15am in my notes
24:16can i can i say something yeah go ahead june i look at this the last part of this where
24:25it says
24:26how beautiful are the feet right of those that praise the good news i look at it as a trail
24:37because where we walk we leave a trail behind and our steps can determine whether those trails
24:52are beautiful so others can follow where you know like trailblazers like moses and those people
25:06i will compare feet with those trails that we leave behind even as we die
25:18that others will have the yearning to walk in them because it adds beauty to the soul
25:30it it aids in bringing salvation to those that walk in them yeah that is a really good thought i
25:39like
25:40that um you know if you think about you know what paul had said earlier about how god's god has
25:47predestined those who believe in him to become an image of his son well why would we want to be
25:55like his son you know he was poor homeless um he was abused and insulted and eventually executed in a
26:04horrible manner but then look at his life and look at the impact that he's had on the world and
26:08the
26:08things that he taught us those are things worth emulating even if it means we come to a violent end
26:15like he did it's worth it to bring that life and that light into the world like he did thank
26:23you june
26:24all right moving on to verse 16 through 18 i put these all in a in a single block because
26:31they seem
26:32to go together but they have not all obeyed the gospel for isaiah says lord who has believed what he
26:39has heard from us so faith comes from hearing and hearing through the word of christ but i ask have
26:44they not heard indeed they have for their voice has gone out to all the earth and their words to
26:49the
26:49ends of the world all right so isaiah that's verse 16 i did not write down the reference of isaiah
26:59there
27:00so i'm not going to look that up right now but it's pretty clear that everybody who hears does not
27:06respond and you know whether whether it's because they are temporarily blinded because the time isn't
27:13right god has something else for them or because god needs to allow their wickedness to get to the
27:20right level before he can pass judgment or because they've hardened themselves you know like paul described
27:28in romans chapter one about how people who suppress their conscience time after time eventually they
27:35destroy it their conscience has become seared and they're unable to hear god's call to repentance
27:41some people do hear though paul's point here is he's quoting isaiah because it's obvious that many of
27:49the israelites many of the jews who saw yeshua face to face they encountered the son of god and had
27:55conversations with him judas spent years walking at his side hearing his teachings and still didn't know
28:04him and if hearing straight from the mouth of the son of god doesn't convince you nothing ever will
28:15and so even though as paul says in verse 17 here faith comes from hearing and hearing through the word
28:23of christ still not everybody is going to hear not everybody is going to obey what they hear but then
28:31we
28:31have the question what does it mean to obey the gospel y'all have any thoughts on that phrase
28:37this one is talking about um what it says about who has believed what he has heard from us
28:46that that was it is actually in isaiah 53 because had they believed it they would not
28:58make that contribution to his death because it's all about yeshua's death and what he went through for us
29:11so the question um is asked have they not all obeyed the gospel did they no they did not
29:25that and they believe those who hear right um it gives them the faith because if you hear and
29:39your heart is set to believe what you hear that will give you salvation right so the importance of
29:54the word is to give us a faith in the promises of um yahweh and if they had believed in
30:08the promises of yahweh
30:10all that is sure went through i mean though it was already that he had to go through these things
30:18for our redemption but i mean when it all comes down to the truth is it was determined by yahweh
30:32but yet you know they meant it is mentioned here that faith comes from hearing
30:42hearing and we have to hear and like shema does not hear but you hear and you act on what
30:56you hear is us not allowing it to go through from one ear to the other you hear you are
31:08moved to believe
31:11and then you hear and then you act on those words that you're heard yeah i think i think that
31:19gets
31:19right to the point and you know like i was saying earlier that the gospel isn't just jesus died for
31:27your sins
31:29first you have to know what is a sin means you have to know that you're a sinner that means
31:33that god has standards and
31:35that means that he has the right to have standards he is your creator and all of that is wrapped
31:40up in the gospel
31:41so if you hear that and you really believe it that requires you to act on it that requires you
31:49to submit
31:49yourself to god to repent from those sins because if you don't repent from them then either you haven't
31:57believed the gospel or you didn't care which really amounts to the same thing because how can you not care
32:02if the
32:03creator of the universe has a vendetta against you so yeah that the faith that comes from hearing requires action
32:12and that action is the
32:13obedience to the gospel thank you okay the question about verse 17 here in the esv in some other translations
32:23it says word of christ but in
32:26king james and especially some older translations it says the word of god the reason for that is that
32:33there's just a difference in the manuscripts and the uh i think the i don't remember the exact like
32:43whether which i don't remember which manuscript is older usually the esv relies on older manuscripts
32:50and the textus receptus on which the king james is translated uses some later ones
32:57but i'm not really sure that's the case here and i think that the latin vulgate in some other
33:01translations from greek that happened quite a bit later than the original greek i think most of those say word
33:08of christ
33:09so i don't know exactly why the king james decided to go with those other manuscripts that say word of
33:15god
33:17but ultimately doesn't matter there are numerous places that we can go to in scripture i think you
33:22know a debate of whether christ is god is kind of outside the scope of where i want to go
33:28i'm just
33:28assuming that he is he is both the son of god and he is god and i realize that's complicated
33:36you know maybe i should go there a little bit yeah i think that i have explained my analogy on
33:42this before
33:42but you know there are passages like revelation one where you have a vision of the son of man
33:50and i i don't think it's constant it's uh controversial to say the son of man is yeshua
33:58because he identified himself as that many times in the gospels so in revelation one when it's john has
34:06this vision of one who is like the son of man this is the same phrasing that daniel used in
34:13his visions
34:13and this is what yeshua was referring back to when he called himself the son of man so
34:21i'm i think most people are agreed that this figure that john sees in the vision at the beginning of
34:26revelation is yeshua but then he turns around and he says i am the first and the last the alpha
34:31and the
34:32omega well that's what god says that's what god said in the prophets there are many other places
34:39that you can go to to say that yeshua is god but then we have paul talking about god sending
34:47yeshua and he being the son of god and then we have yeshua praying to god so it all gets
34:54a little
34:54confusing the thing you have to understand is that when paul and the other new testament writers
35:01reference god they're usually talking about the father or the whole being of god you know like
35:09you are a being a soul that includes your your head your hands your feet your heart your spirit your
35:17mind all of these things are part of you so if your body sends something out then it comes from
35:25you
35:25you know even if it was only your hand say your hand throws a ball out well that ball came
35:29from you
35:30even though it actually just came from your hand but your hand is part of you now what if i
35:35put my
35:36hand out well my hand has gone out from me but it's still me so god can send out a
35:44part of him he can
35:45send out the son of god and the son of god still be god just like i can send out
35:50my hand or i can send
35:51my voice i'm not saying that yeshua is a body part of god i don't think the analogy all analogies
35:59break
35:59down if you look too closely at them it's just an analogy to illustrate how something can come
36:05from god and still be god and how yeshua as the son of god can talk to god and still
36:12be god
36:13in this analogy my hand talks back to me it sends nerve impulses back to my brain and my brain
36:19says
36:19sends instructions back to my hand but then i also have muscle memory my hand has done certain things
36:27like tied my shoes or written my name so many times my brain doesn't have to tell my hand how
36:32to do it anymore it just doesn't and that's like yeshua in the world acting as god's emissary as the
36:39son of god and still being god he does what the father tells him to do and then he prays
36:45to the father
36:46so there's communication going back and forth so does it matter which word was in the original in
36:54paul's letter the word of christ or the word of god yeshua said that he only came to speak what
36:59the
36:59father gave him so the word of christ is the word of the father so this is one of the
37:05places that
37:05someone might go to to say see there there are differences in manuscripts how do you know which
37:10one is right as far as i know there aren't any of those differences that actually really make a
37:15difference uh there are a few longer ones like in mark 7 i think it is and you know the
37:22uh john well
37:24that was a short one i think john 8 was the uh the woman called caught in adultery and there's
37:28a section
37:29long section there uh that is in some manuscripts and not in others when you take it in the context
37:34of
37:34all of scripture it doesn't change the meaning of scripture unless you take it out of the context
37:39and interpret it all by itself and then you can read all kinds of meanings into it kind of a
37:44tangent
37:44but it's here in romans so i thought it was worth talking about uh let's see any other thoughts about
37:52verses 16 and 17 yeah isaiah the prophecy about yeshua where it says unto us a child is born and
38:05a son is
38:06given right who is his son who is his child because it it goes on to say that he his
38:17name will be called
38:19the wonderful counselor mighty god everlasting father yep and i think it's in john i can't remember
38:32was it um i'm trying to thomas when when when he questioned well yeshua when he says when you see
38:44me you see
38:45the father and i and the father are one so with this prophecy we are seeing where the father and
38:57the son is one
38:58because the son is called everlasting father yep yeah i completely agree okay going on with what paul is
39:11talking about here with the you know the overall idea of even though the word has gone out to many
39:17people they didn't believe and specifically talking about israel he says i ask have they not heard
39:24but indeed they have or their voice has gone out to all the earth and their words to the ends
39:29of the
39:29world and that's a quote from psalm 19 4 somebody want to look that one up actually read the first
39:37six
39:37verses in psalm 19 19 1 through 6 i got it psalm 19 right okay the heavens declare the glory
39:46of god and
39:47and the sky shows his handiwork day to day they speak night to night they reveal knowledge
39:53there is no speech no words where their voice goes unheard the voice has gone out to all the earth
40:00and their words to the end of the of the world the heavens he pitched a tent for the sun
40:06it is like a bridegroom coming out of his bridal chamber it is like a strong man rejoicing to run
40:12his course you said the first six yeah one more one more oh sorry it rises at at one end
40:21of the
40:21heavens and makes its circuit to the other end nothing is hidden from its heat thank you
40:28this is talking about how all of creation tells us about god there is i mean all you have to
40:35do is
40:35look at the structure of life around you and how it's all connected together and today we have
40:42even back when psalm 19 was written this this should have been obvious to everybody just look
40:47outside and you can see the evidence of a creator god everywhere and now we have the technology to
40:53look down into the the inner workings of a cell and see even more complexity it's just mind-boggling how
41:01anybody can see that and not come away thinking wow somebody designed this somebody had a purpose and
41:08created all this to work together and you know somebody will criticize the human eye and say oh
41:14it's such an inefficient design like well you design an eye that can see perform all of these different
41:23functions communicate with an organic brain that grew from a single cell built itself now you design
41:33that see if you can do any better that's just nuts and so nobody who can look at creation has
41:40any
41:41excuse for not believing in a creator and the voice of creation goes out to the all there to all
41:47the
41:47earth so it doesn't really matter who you are you have had the word you have had the gospel taught
41:53to
41:53you because creation itself talks about it tells you the name of god it tells you that there is a
42:01creator
42:02if you're willing to hear it and so yeah as we talked about earlier many people hear the truth
42:11and choose to reject it but many more have chosen to reject it before they've even heard it before
42:16they've even considered it everyone who has ever existed had some opportunity to hear god's call to
42:22repentance and faith even if they didn't understand the details of who god is or the details of what he
42:28expects from them they will they should be able to get the gist just from existence and but the vast
42:36majority have chosen to continue on in their own path fully justifying god's condemnation of them
42:42and that doesn't just apply to israel and the jews but it applies to everybody in the whole world
42:48and this psalm psalm 19 it it begins by talking about how everybody should know that there is a god
42:55just
42:55from looking around but then it ends by saying the law of yahweh is perfect restoring the soul
43:01the testimony of yahweh is sure making wise the simple so you start by simply hearing and when you
43:09hear and choose to believe then god can work in you through his law and through his spirit
43:17to transform you to restore your soul to make you wise when you were simple but you have to hear
43:25first
43:26you have to be willing to hear and then you have to obey the gospel you have to act on
43:32it does that
43:33all make sense yes yeah and you know the purpose of god sending people out to preach the gospel
43:44it's the idea that you can look outside and see that there's a creator i think the you know at
43:50some
43:51level we can all do that and we have to suppress that in ourselves but it's still a very vague
43:56kind
43:57of thing i mean it's not detailed it doesn't tell you a lot about the creator it tells you that
44:02he is
44:02detail oriented that he's systematic uh that he is he follows laws which means that he wants us to
44:10follow laws but it doesn't tell you everything about his what his laws are and that's why god
44:17sends out evangelists and teachers to tell people the details of who he is you know you can derive from
44:24looking at a tree that there is a god but is there a different god for the trees than there
44:30are
44:30than there is for the mountain you know obviously most humans have come to that conclusion that
44:36there are gods everywhere when you hear god's word as explained in scripture you learn that there are
44:43these little gods everywhere but god is the god of them all he is more powerful than any other god
44:48there is no god beside him and that's a really important part of understanding his name
44:56in being able to respond to it and call out to him how do you know which god to call
45:01out to
45:01unless somebody tells you this is the god who created everything and is the master of all
45:08so there is still even though nature is telling us and hinting at him there is still a dire need
45:14for explicit instruction in who god is and about his promises and what he expects from us
45:20all right any other thoughts about these three verses or questions no sometimes i ask y'all for
45:28input as an excuse to take another sip of water that's not really true i just i always take advantage
45:34of it though it's better than staring at the camera and waiting for input all right let's move on
45:41then we got a few more verses here in uh in romans chapter 10 uh that was 18 yeah i
45:50think we only have
45:50three more verses in this chapter and we'll finish on this chapter or we're not going to go into chapter
45:5411 tonight all right 19 through 21 this is the last part of this chapter but i asked did israel
46:01not
46:02understand her moses says i will make you jealous of those who are not a nation with a foolish nation
46:07i
46:07will make you angry then isaiah is so bold as to say i have been found by those who did
46:12not seek me
46:13i have shown myself to those who did not ask for me but of israel he says all day long
46:18i have held
46:19out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people uh let's read these three references first
46:27in verse 19 that is a quote from deuteronomy 32 while somebody is looking that up the second one is
46:37from
46:37isaiah 65 go ahead and look start looking that one up isaiah 65 from here okay see deuteronomy 32
46:49okay i'm gonna go back to i'm gonna go back all the way to verse 9 and read through verse
46:5621
46:59for yahweh's portion is his people jacob is the allotment of his inheritance he found in him in a
47:05desert land and in the howling waste of a wilderness he encircled him he cared for him he guarded him
47:10as
47:10the pupil of his eye like an eagle that stirs up its nest that hovers over its young he spread
47:16his wings
47:16and caught them he carried them on his pinions the lord alone guided him for there was no foreign god
47:22with him he made him ride on the high places of the earth and he ate the produce of the
47:26field he made
47:28him suck honey from the rock and oil from the flinty rock the curds of cows the milk of the
47:33flock with
47:33fat of lambs and rams the breed of bashan and goats and with the finest of the wheat and the
47:39blood of
47:39grapes you drank wine but yesherun grew fat and kicked you have grown fat thick and sleek for he
47:46forsook god who made him and scorned the rock of his salvation they made him jealous with strange
47:52gods with abominations they provoked him to anger they sacrificed to demons who were not god to gods
47:57whom they have not known new gods who came lately whom your fathers did not dread you neglected the
48:03rock who begot you and forgot the god who gave you birth the lord saw this and spurned them because
48:09of the provocation of his sons and daughters then he said i will hide my face from them i will
48:14see what
48:14their end shall be for they are are a perverse generation sons in whom there is no faithfulness
48:21they have made me jealous with what is not god they have provoked me to anger with their idols
48:26so i will make them jealous with those who are not a people i will provoke them to anger with
48:32a foolish
48:32nation at it in part this is looking back at the exodus you know god rescued the hebrews from egypt
48:40brought them through the wilderness and even in the wilderness while he was right there in the camp
48:44they betrayed him they went off and worshipped other gods first the golden calf and later
48:50baal peor and but this is also a prophecy of what would happen when they were in the land
48:56as soon as they were in the land they started going after the gods of the canaanites
49:00malak and baal and ashtaroth and you know all of these other gods and god says that because
49:09they would abandon him for things that were not even gods despite all that he had done for them
49:15he would respond by making them jealous with a people who are not a people they made him jealous
49:23with gods that are not gods he's going to make them jealous with people who are not a people
49:28and yeah i i don't know exactly how the rabbis interpret this passage but the way that paul is
49:35using this is he's talking about gentiles who came to believe now maybe he was maybe the rabbis
49:41actually think that that moses was talking about the mixed multitude he came who came out of egypt
49:46and they frequently blame the mixed multitude for for their sins for this you know this idol worship
49:54that happened in the wilderness but that is not what torah says and in fact god blames the hebrews
50:00for that idol worship and said that he is going to make them jealous by choosing the mixed multitude
50:06by bringing them in this mixed multitude wasn't a people they were individuals who had been drawn out
50:13from many different nations and joined to israel in the wilderness and so god is this is a pattern
50:21for the future and with paul going out into the nations becoming the apostle to the gentiles
50:28he's going out and he's calling out a new mixed multitude and he's bringing them to faith in israel's
50:35messiah in order to make the jews jealous to say hey who are these people who are going after our
50:41messiah he's our messiah we should be going after him and this is god's plan all along
50:47he is making because they abandoned him for false for gods who are not gods he is now temporarily at
50:54least turning away from them and going out to a people who are not a people to draw them in
51:01and with the ultimate goal that then they would turn away from these gods who are not gods
51:06and turn back to the true god and the prophets talk about this too when they say to jacob widen
51:13your
51:14tents because you've got this mixed multitude coming into israel and this is all part of the
51:19redemption and the repentance of the remnant of israel remember that the book of romans was written
51:27specifically to address a conflict between jews and gentiles who were all members of a single
51:32messianic synagogue in rome so this is i mean this is getting right to the core of the purpose of
51:39paul
51:39writing this letter you know all the stuff about you know condemnation and salvation those are all
51:46important but what paul was really taught writing to the romans about was the melding of jew and
51:52gentile together in the body of messiah okay uh june did you say you have isaiah 65 yes i do
52:00yeah just
52:01just read the first two verses isaiah 65 1 and 2 i am inquired of by those who didn't ask
52:10i am found
52:13by those who didn't seek me i said see me to a nation that was not called by my name
52:22i have spread out my
52:25hands all day to rebellious people who walk in a way that is not good after their own thoughts a
52:35people
52:36who provoke me to my face continually sacrificing in gardens and burning incense on bricks that's good
52:49you want me to continue no that's good enough thank you june okay okay so says i have been found
52:57by
52:57those who did not seek me i have shown myself to those who did not ask for me who who
53:03do you think
53:04that god is talking about gentiles yeah he god has spent all this time talking to israel like you know
53:13he called them out of egypt he rescued them taught them his commandments in the wilderness and all the
53:18while he's being watched by rahab hundreds of miles away and then when the spies show up rahab is like
53:26hey we know all about you and your god is the real god and i want to follow him and
53:31not these other fake
53:32gods and israel turns around and says yeah we kind of like all these other fake gods and yeah we
53:40know god
53:41did all these miracles and stuff but let's try out these other ones for a while and so the people
53:48who
53:48were not originally looking for god they saw him through his promises and the miracles that he did
53:53for israel and you know god revealed himself to them through acting on behalf of israel but israel
54:01he's like i've held out my hands all day long to this disobedient and contrary people
54:08and they they're not listening they're not responding and so god is saying okay well these
54:14other people are responding i'll talk to them for a while and dispensationalists will might go to
54:21something like this and say you know that's when the dispensation of you know whatever dispensation
54:26they're using i can't keep track that's when that one ended and now we're in the church age
54:30and god is talking to the gentile church and then when this age is done then he's going to go
54:36back and
54:36start talking to israel again that's not what's happening here god isn't totally abandoning israel
54:45even if it's for you know ages he is still reaching out to israel but he is metaphorically turning away
54:53from them in reaching out to gentiles even while he's doing this as a way to reach out to the
55:00jews
55:01he's saying hey jews look what i'm doing over here to these gentiles i'm reaching out to them now
55:06because they're listening they're paying attention are you paying attention even when he saves the
55:13gentiles he's doing it in order to save his original people the israelites that's like the the
55:22sara phoenician woman when she went to yeshua and um yeshua says not it's not me to take the
55:34children's bread and throw it to dogs and she said even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the
55:43master's
55:43table so the gentiles they were considered commoners dogs just just think of the names that they were called that
55:58the jews saw themselves superior to them but yet they were not walking in the calling that
56:06you know that yahweh had put up on the um the nation uh but you know they have people like
56:16ruth ruth said
56:18to naomi i mean your god's gonna be my god and wherever you go i will go because she saw
56:27the goodness
56:27of yahweh upon um naomi's life despite of the fact that naomi was no longer
56:36in bethlehem but she decided i'm gonna follow you because i saw something good or um or i should say
56:47see at that time something good some blessing is upon your life and i'm not gonna let you go
56:55yeah you know that that samaritan woman that you mentioned you know when yeshua says uses this
57:02metaphor of dogs he's playing off of the popular view of jews you know how they saw samaritans not
57:10necessarily how he did but he says this to her to see how she responds and then he rewards her
57:15faith
57:17and what god is doing through paul is he's inviting these gentiles to sit at the table and not just
57:24to
57:24pick the crumbs up off the floor he's saying you people if you're going to call out to me if
57:30you're
57:30going to call on my name and be faithful to me you come and sit here at the table and
57:35you're going
57:35to be the same as my other children and he does this because then the jews who are in rebellion
57:44will see these gentile believers eating from the hand of god and learning his commandments and living
57:52as they're supposed to be living and they'll they're supposed to say hey what about us
57:59and god's hand is still out to them he's still saying come there's a place here for you
58:06i didn't give your place away i just made the table bigger that is the end goal and we know
58:12we know from history and from prophecy that even then the vast majority of israelites who have ever
58:18lived just like the vast majority of gentiles will not answer that call there will be a faithful
58:24remnant there always is but most people ignore it most people don't want to come to god it's our job
58:32to to walk you know to create the path that june was describing to walk in a way that shows
58:41other
58:41people this is the right way to go to bring the good news through through teaching the scriptures to
58:48relaying the words of god because how else are they going to believe if they can't hear the words of
58:54god
58:54and see us walking them out like yeshua did all right any other thoughts that's the end of romans 10
59:02i think unless you got some questions or thoughts anything you want to share good stuff yeah
59:10yeah romans is just it is a deep and dense book there's so much in here okay then there's so
59:20many
59:21interconnections um especially with the book of isaiah yeah he's constantly quoting isaiah and
59:31the other prophets but yeah mostly isaiah lots of quotes to hosea and uh and deuteronomy especially
