Bobby took us Below The Belt to break down the Cowboys’ approach to kicker Brandon Aubrey. They discussed how Ka'imi Fairbairn’s new deal affects his market, whether Dallas should pay him above the tender, how his long-range ability factors in, and what the team gains by holding firm. They also touched on roster moves at safety and defensive tackle, and more.

00:00all knowers and we just talk ball oh your market just took a hit brandon aubrey let's talk about
00:07it let's fight about it here in below the belt which is brought to you by academy sports i hope
00:13brandon aubrey finds you on the streets kicks you right in the nuts why well you want to you
00:18want to fork over even more yeah you you want to contribute to busting the budget like we're all
00:22about a balanced budget amendment here in frisco okay uh all right so yesterday we got some news
00:30and i and i know you're you think i'm picking on brandon aubrey a little bit
00:36i would just say i'm i'm not picking on him i'm picking on his position and how little i care
00:43for
00:43it for the most part uh kayemi fairbairn who i know a lot of cowboys fans don't look around across
00:51the
00:51rest of the nfl to realize there are a few different kickers that have been as good as
00:55brandon aubrey and they just think like he's some superhuman that nobody else can do what he does
01:00that's how i thought uh he signed a new deal we have a new highest paid kicker in the nfl
01:06driving
01:07up that market by a hundred thousand dollars kayemi fairbairn signed a two-year extension with the
01:14texans making 13 million dollars that's six and a half million per season it just barely eclipses
01:19harrison butker i don't know that it makes a lot of sense for brandon aubrey to definitely claim
01:2510 million or in shefter's case 12 million in a second or whatever he said uh i find it really
01:32difficult when you have a second round tender on him and you can make him play for 5.7 i
01:36find it
01:37really difficult to even accept saying we'll top the market by a million and a half for you yeah so
01:43this is good for the cowboys kayemi fairbairn since 2023 which is when brandon aubrey got into
01:51the nfl kayemi fairbairn is 90.7 on field goals brandon aubrey's 88.2 he's better than him uh
02:00fairbairn's right around 80 on field goals of 50 plus aubrey's aubrey's like 79.5 fairbairn's 80
02:07same kicks on that 50 plus now a lot of people yesterday going what about 60 plus it's like the
02:12nfl doesn't track 60 plus and i'm not going through every individual kick and going to track it but
02:15whatever even if he does that that's not enough to me to all of a sudden go yeah but even
02:20though
02:20he's a more accurate kicker there and a more accurate kicker from 50 and actually fairbairn's
02:24more accurate basically through every interval that they track in the nfl because he's been better
02:29from 60 that all of a sudden that means i'll pay 2 million above market price for that one how
02:33many
02:33attempts and makes what he have to have from beyond 60 for you to value and include that as an
02:39extra category zero once you're at 50 plus you're at 50 plus i don't want to kick that's his superpower
02:45it's not worth two million dollars over market price it's just not if you want to top fairbairn
02:50fine if you want to make an argument say he should get 6.6 or he should get 6.8
02:55or something fine i'm not
02:57going to 8 for you especially when i can make you play on 5.7 so fairbairn is just one
03:04example of
03:04this and i was like cam littles really the yeah he's he's the free he's on grass where does brandon
03:11aubrey since he entered the league where does brandon aubrey rank in field goal percentage in
03:14the nfl i mean i would guess he's uh number three i'm not gonna no do it you have to
03:22play this is being
03:23on the radio chop you have to participate you know what this is this is all these espn top 10
03:29lists about 2015 trying to find anybody to replace mike trout as the best player in the game okay that's
03:36what this is this is anybody use you can use your little nerd stats like percentage this is usually
03:41you literally i could use i can i can use several this is like saying he's the best this is
03:46like
03:46saying where is the best in the league where did my because the narrative says he's the best in the
03:50league all right and i had to sit here for all you idiots out there telling me this guy's the
03:55best
03:55this guy's the best because the narrative says that all right i don't really have any good examples
04:00because i'm just kind of making this up as i go along yeah but where do you think he ranks
04:03field goal percentage see i don't like that i don't like user field goal percentage i don't think
04:09it's got enough nuance okay 11th okay they're their 10 kicker they're the third of the league has
04:14been better than him on 50 plus you if we if you want to change it to 50 plus of
04:18those 10 kickers
04:19that have been better than him more than half of them six are more accurate than him from 50 plus
04:25do you believe there are 10 kickers better than that's what i was gonna ask i believe there are
04:28probably i i think that when you get to the level where aubry's at i think you're talking about
04:34roughly the same value and i think there's about eight kickers who can do what he does so you never
04:38thought at any point in this last two-year run he was this superhuman ultimate weapon what he was
04:44doing when it when his hype and star blew up initially yeah he was the first he was the forerunner
04:49the rest of the league has caught up the rest of the league is doing that now cam little made
04:5367
04:54and 68 last year aubry had 65 the most accurate kicker in the nfl is somebody who's been exiled
05:00twice in the last three the last most accurate kicker over the last three years somebody who's
05:04been exiled twice and is 41 years old it's nick folk by a considerable amount he's been he's the
05:09most accurate kicker from 52 yeah yeah look if you don't i'm not i don't say i'm not saying i
05:14want to
05:14pay him eight ten million dollars a year right but i just i don't like the i don't like the
05:19the
05:20tear down i don't like the tear down if i told you mike trout was in the 67th percentile of
05:26war
05:26among major league outfielders would you say um yeah probably shouldn't make him the most that's
05:31the difference is that he was not that you can you can find several numbers that say trout's one of
05:35the best aubry's one of the best but it's just a broad tier this is not mahomes and everybody else
05:40do you okay now here do you trust him over any game on the line where is your clutch factor
05:49clutch
05:49factor yeah do you bring that in do i trust him more than trust him more than cam a little
05:53more
05:53than fair bear in a in a no in a one kick spot no i assume when those two step
05:59up on the same kick
05:59they're gonna make it too are you responding to this tolo charlie's tweet saying your field goal
06:05percentage leaves out that context of the 60 yarders and that same spam fair bairn has zero 60 yard
06:12attempts only one in his career oh aubry has nine and made six so there's a bunch of people who
06:18came
06:18in and said that so a bunch of people replied said it's the 60 it doesn't take into account 60
06:23and he
06:23doesn't it's like i don't care that's if you're telling me eight field goals in three years is
06:29enough to pay him one and a half million over the market basically like a third over the top of
06:36the
06:36market no way i'm telling him to play on the the tender if he's not going to just sign for
06:41six five
06:41or six six yeah um yesterday was a good thing for the dallas cowboys organization with this
06:47development with this negotiation no doubt it would have sucked if he got seven seven and a half in
06:52houston um because it's like okay with all the numbers that i present to you todd france what are
06:59you presenting back to tell me that he should make three million more or even a million and a half
07:05if
07:05you want to take it to eight and i would be fascinated to hear what todd france said back to
07:10that again
07:11brandon aubry's good the kicking like kicking in the nfl though is not is not something where we
07:19haven't generally leveled out the top like there's there are like some standout like just about every
07:25position in the nfl you're going like that's the guy and and and statistically that is the guy by a
07:29considerable amount at almost every position that's not kicker now kicker is there about 10 guys who are
07:35doing this and doing it consistently especially with the the k-ball changes that we've talked about
07:39then why don't we hear about them the same just because it's a cowboy because it's a cowboy because he
07:45was
07:45the first and so i don't think people have caught on to the fact that like this is being done
07:50around
07:50the league now like especially last year really kind of throttling it up will you give him seven
07:56um seven to be done no it's got to be six five you're flying over five 500k no i would
08:01just make
08:02him play on the tender this year but i generally don't want to pay a kicker more than four million
08:06okay it's just it's too much to commit to a position that i think i can find i found brandon
08:12aubry
08:13off a soccer field brett maher walked in here and was making 58 yarders and was one of the more
08:19accurate kickers in the league for two years man i look i i understand the premise of not wanting to
08:25pay a kicker i really do i struggle with the tug of war because and i get it i'm going
08:31the complete
08:31opposite like if i'm thinking i'm falling into the trap where if i don't have brandon aubry i've got
08:36an unknown or that unknown it's not the quarterback position yeah that unknown could be a frustrating
08:42guy who misses a ton of kicks and big spots and it's a wild way to live it's a wild
08:48way to live
08:49so i i understand what you're saying but to me i think this is a i kind of wish i
08:53did it's a gift
08:55no it's a yeah it's a gift in terms of like a Aubrey's a gift Aubrey's a gift no like
08:59what you
08:59know what they signed fairbaring for is yeah that's a leverage gift for sure for the cowboys yeah
09:03there's there's zero if he is insistent on i need to make eight million dollars i think you go no
09:08you you have no basis to do that i'll give you seven there is zero leverage for brandon aubry
09:12in the negotiations seven you maybe get to seven and a half uh because you know you're like what
09:17are you really gonna buy for half million dollars you know what kind of player not half of jonathan
09:21mingo season yeah i mean that's it like are you really gonna if it's doing six and a half and
09:26seven and a half well that's jonathan mingo that's that's the kind of play you're getting for a million
09:32dollars i can i mean i'm just in general when you look at we know you don't want him no
09:37but i know
09:37like okay so does that not move you at all though like seeing that the the number of kickers like
09:42there are 10 guys doing across the nfl over three years not one over three years doing what he does
09:46and actually at a slightly more efficient rate i'm choose not to believe the numbers and
09:52choose not to believe that's where we're going now we're going uh just i'm viewing it as cook
09:57cook numbers cook books all right all right well with their extra money that they've i don't disagree
10:01with you uh on right now the negotiation that's how i would negotiate i think it feels unfair to say
10:07do it on the tender after what he's done for you and what he's making that feels it feels bad
10:11faith
10:12yes um you want to do right by somebody i want to do right by someone but i understand like
10:17that was
10:17very good what happened yesterday for the negotiation yeah and uh look i've said before i think he's he's
10:22worth the seven million if he gets it he's probably worth it i don't want to pay it though
10:27yeah it's just what it is i don't want to do that all right a couple updates really quickly on
10:30what
10:30the cowboys did yesterday other than sat there and and weeped silently over max crosby uh pj lock
10:37has signed with the cowboys this is somebody we mentioned uh last week a beaumont native uh has been
10:42with the broncos for a few years one year five million dollars good deal he's got experience with
10:46christian parker he's going to be a uh a rotational strong safety and special teamer for them and let me
10:52play a really cool moment i thought that i mean to me this just shows you uh the connections the
10:58dedication the coverage of the station when it comes to this week why you shouldn't go anywhere
11:03else in my opinion you'd just be robbing yourself of the knowledge that brian brought us just got
11:07instantly on gbag sean payton got back to us oh heck yeah sean i tell him i said hello he
11:15liked you
11:16buttering him up i did you buttered his okay okay okay read the exact text you sent and then give
11:21us
11:22his response uh hey coach gave a great scouting report on williams last season outstanding can you
11:28give me one on your former guy lock love his tape thanks brought us he says great to hear from
11:35you
11:35brian our safeties play left and right so he could play down in the box or play the deep third
11:41he's very
11:42versatile he's a great teammate he covers well he tackles well really gonna miss him okay all right
11:51we got to take his word for it he's not he wasn't blowing smoke on javante williams nope he was
11:56right
11:56about that glad to hear he's a good teammate we know he's a good tackler he speaks to him as
12:00a
12:00versatile player and that's what you get with gbag they will repeat verbatim on the air what you tell
12:05though that was a good connection by brian i haven't taken any audio like jabs about that yet
12:17so i'm having fun with it that's all so below the belt right here on dfw sports station and then
12:23the
12:23nose tackle bob oh yeah they got uh otito obonia who is a rotational depth defensive tackle it does
12:29continue to fill out that room and make you wonder about osa though as there's more chatter and reports
12:33about him
