00:00the great bobby belt shoddy and bobby just talking don't make me take off my belt don't make me take
00:06off my belt we're not over to you bobby who in the world is in charge of this dallas cowboys
00:11football team it's more complicated than you might think let's talk about it here in below
00:15the belt which is sponsored by window nation and dnm leasing the cowboys get to two and two
00:22thankfully because some late in the half decision making uh didn't burn them the way you might
00:29expect and steven i i feel like i know you have to do public support i think in talking to
00:36knc
00:37yesterday he was legitimately supporting and would support again the 65 yarder in the same situation
00:42yeah we paid him he's capable of doing it we paid him we would have justified the seven million
00:47dollars we spent on him wrong wrong what i just said wrong there's very much an attitude and in
00:53some ways it's in some instances in some context it's probably right it's not right as a blanket
01:01policy though but in some ways it is right to say i've paid you to do a job you need
01:05to do it
01:06like i do and i'm not saying this one is because it's not but like you don't pay you to
01:10be it makes
01:1065 yarders no right but i'm saying well i mean they did that's because otherwise you just don't pay
01:15so like you pay any kicker to make 50 like yeah but i can do 60 like 62 maybe so
01:21and part of that
01:22is i don't know aubrey may have said like i can do 65 today i have because a lot of
01:26times they'll
01:26ask you what's your range today they'll ask the kicker and the kicker will tell you like this is
01:30where i can max out at but to me the range only matters at end of half or game i'm
01:36not throwing
01:36somebody out there to attempt a 65 yarder with time on the clock i can't give them uh half a
01:41field i
01:42can't remember where i'd heard that somebody's talking this weekend saying like 65 yarders you
01:46don't kick those with 30 seconds left on the clock you can't come with like 10 or less but like
01:51less
01:51seven when there's 30 seconds left that seems like way too big a risk especially when your last two
01:55field goals from distance have been blocked your defense was playing better you made it a two score
02:00game and they have a good kicker houston they right so so oh yeah you knew if you missed that
02:07kick
02:07they've got to get those seven yards yes three free points dallas dallas gets the field goal blocked
02:15and then houston goes down and kicks a field goal dallas comes back misses the 65 yarder houston goes
02:21down and gets a six full gets a field goal at minimum you just gave up six points at most
02:26it's a 12
02:28point swing it's like however you want to view like if you would have gone for it instead if you
02:32just
02:32go ahead and punt it like minimum you gave up six points and in a game that was a four
02:38point game
02:39that's those are margins that you're not counting the six points off the three you know the first
02:45field goal i'm only counting the six points off like the two field goals in general that you try
02:49to kick from 60 plus yeah i'm saying that both of those ended up in field goals because houston got
02:54the ball back they block one and miss one yeah but i don't blame i don't i don't sign the
02:59same blame
03:00for the first attempt as i do the second no it's not as bad everyone kept saying to me it's
03:05six
03:05points it's six what why because will anderson blocked it i don't i don't factor that in as
03:11it's a negative for nick sorenson until this team shows they can like actually kick from distance
03:15which they haven't been able to so far and they haven't been able to since the end of last season
03:19i think it's an unnecessary risk at this point especially when that field goal would have made
03:22it 10 to 9 it wasn't even going to make it like it's not like oh this puts you ahead
03:26or puts it
03:27like you're still chasing points it's still the same one possession game at that point
03:31um how many how many field goals has aubrey made the last two seasons from 60 plus do we have
03:37that
03:38as a stat do the 60 no they do 50 plus they don't do 60 plus it's just stupid well
03:43they're gonna have
03:43to change it it's just back in the day it was like a historic thing when you do it now
03:47everybody does
03:47it and you paid seven million for something everybody does uh but this was a a discussion on
03:53friday they had asked steven gbag did by the gbag nation every day seven of ten seven or ten no
04:01telling if that's actually correct because ai will just spit out numbers sometimes right um gbag asked
04:06steven on friday hey you guys talked this week about all the different changes that you were
04:11investigating with your game management did you make changes or is it just about doubling down on
04:18executing your policies already the right way and steven said it was just they were doubling down on
04:22executing it and that that was more was a focus on was just hey let's stay committed to what we
04:27do
04:27and not panic and rather than changing anything in their protocols so there's a lot of misunderstanding
04:33or a lot of not even misunderstanding a lot of questions in general about what is their protocol
04:37who's in charge to what extent do they have a voice are they making decisions are they merely
04:43recommending decisions like for instance one of these things we're about to get into here
04:48it sounds like the challenge calls are not up to brian schottenheimer just because or that they've
04:53created it that way because they go we can't see the replay we're in a position it's such a fast
04:58thing
04:58we need to have somebody else dedicated to telling us if we're doing that or not so this was an
05:03article
05:03over at the athletic that they had done on game management coordinators at the end of last year
05:06jordan rodrigue did this covered a couple different teams but one of the teams that was covered extensively
05:10and it was dallas and ryan feeder and what he does and we hear ryan feeder's name almost every week
05:15from schottenheimer when we talked to him on friday i feel like he he brings him up every other week
05:20since we started doing the interview um and this is what jordan rodrigue wrote she said every nfl team
05:25dedicates at least some coaching and analytics resources to in-game decision making and related
05:30roles but the range of investment varies across the league some teams assign strategy work to special
05:35teams coaches or have senior staff juggle it alongside their main jobs teams that prioritize
05:40situational management dedicate a full-time expert to develop strategies around timeout
05:45usage clock management late down management and officiating issues challenges how different
05:50crews call the game and the details or workarounds of certain rules dallas cowboys game management
05:55coordinator ryan feeder says this you are advising and teaching the football team the coaching staff
06:01the players the entire organization just how you play the game game management as a whole it's about
06:08creating confidence in your coaches and your players that they know what is going on so
06:14right off the bat i think that's an interesting description of how apparently dallas handles it
06:19is that from their view or at least from the view of the guy who holds the job the game
06:23management
06:24coordinator teaches the team football and teaches them how they're supposed to play now that's less
06:29about technique and more about the legitimate how to color inside the lines basically of rules but still
06:36the fact that there's somebody that they're there to do all those sort of things uh ryan feeder talked
06:40about how rules changes go on competitive information is kept private but teams are always interacting
06:46with the league on how things are being officiated how things might change over the course of the year
06:52so ryan feeder says that the league is always changing the rules are always changing and the
06:55interpretations are changing we want the game to be clean we want the officiating to be clean and one
07:00of the ways they do that is he talks to other coordinators from other teams what's the league
07:05telling you about this rule what's the league telling you about this rule and they're trying to make sure
07:08that they're getting consistency from the league in terms of what the messaging is and so there are
07:12teams apparently that will share their private conversations with the league about this sort of
07:17thing trying to figure out are we all hearing the same thing are we all getting the same thing
07:20consistently by wednesday or thursday game management experts build packages of information with
07:25guidance for scenarios they might face in that week's game how that is presented to coaches and
07:29players and then applied on the field varies dramatically from team to team this is the interesting money
07:34quote from this from ryan feeder he said how you build this rapport is not not done on game day
07:39it's done in the preparation through nighttime talks and practice reps the personal relationship drives
07:45this whole thing if they don't trust in me as a person as a decision maker in my skill set
07:51then
07:52whatever i say doesn't matter that sounds right there from that quote that like he has much more power in
08:00the active decisions that are being made than just somebody who's saying in their ear hey this is
08:06what the numbers say this sounds like he is a decision maker like he says there in my decision
08:10making that to me says that he's not just giving them figures and like acting as a quant for them
08:15like doing math i got my question cooked up ready for it 877-881-1053 frankler frankl fan text
08:23who lasts longer ryan feeder game manager or nick sorenson oh ryan feeder last longer yeah he's lasted over two
08:32coaching regimes who hired him mccarthy okay um but i don't know if he hired for this role was it
08:39for the same
08:40role same role yeah he did this at nebraska previously and and everybody around the team will tell you they
08:44think
08:44he does a really good job yeah that they think he's on top of things and he does more than
08:48just the game
08:48management stuff like i said the other day you may have been out you have a have a bad day
08:56as a heart doctor that that's that's a really bad day you mess up a transplant for you it isn't
09:03that's right they may need to go to the heart doctor after some of this like you mess up uh
09:07you mess up
09:08the transplant you have a bad day that's a really that's a bad day to have day ryan feeder
09:14can mess up and have a bad day and it's a really bad day because he is in our sights
09:24right now as
09:26someone that's making brian schottenheimer in my opinion look not incapable whatever's barely above
09:34incapable in terms of game inadequate inadequate and incapable of consistent sharp game management
09:43decisions in my opinion it's just me saying it ryan feeder is making schottenheimer and that could
09:50be an excuse it could be schottenheimer that's bad yeah schottenheimer may be terrible about i'm just
09:55like how can you be terrible about 25 years your pops being around pete carroll all the experience
10:00how could you mess these things up like this but to be fair pete carroll and his dad weren't the
10:06most
10:06aggressive of people right well kicking the field goal was aggressive uh marty schottenheimer
10:13would have punted marty schottenheimer before halftime would have and pete carroll would have
10:16punted the damn football you would have gone in the half down seven you would have come out scored
10:20and tied versus being down three i look i think they should have punted too uh i do think he
10:25leans too
10:26much into um aubrey and i'll tell you this i refuse to believe that ryan feeder is telling him
10:33to go conservative with aubrey what do you mean so when he does we've we've talked about him like
10:43not going for it on fourth down enough all right uh and when he kicks i that's to me that's
10:49shoddy
10:51that's shoddy i think feeder could absolutely why wouldn't feeder be encouraging him to also
10:55kick aggressively get points kicking a 16 to 62 yarder that that was is aggressive yeah that is that is
11:02i'm
11:02been like we we've especially last year we talked about how he was getting he was relying he was
11:08aubrey too much as a crutch yeah get not going oh you mean okay aubrey i'm sorry feeder would
11:13have wanted to go for it okay okay all right feeder feeder and i say this i i thought that
11:16was a
11:18tremendous decision uh when they decided to go for late in the game when they got the penalty
11:23of the fourth down uh fourth and four to ferguson the one where that one yeah well yeah i mean
11:30the
11:31one where they had to they had no choice i mean they could have no they couldn't have two minutes
11:34they only had two times they had to there's no credit for that decision would have been the one
11:37before that no because they would have tied the game they could have tied the game right i don't
11:41remember another four maybe they went for another fourth down or sorensen who lasts longer uh i think
11:46there's a good shot they both last the same like to the end of the season and then they're out
11:49i think that's not during an in-season feeder has the the better chance to stick around i think
11:54because of everything he does they you i think sorensen could be gone in season i've been i've been told
11:59they used feeder in the process of hiring parker like it's not just game management stuff they
12:03involve him in but to talk about here he holds regular situational meetings for players and
12:07coaches feeder does with a little bit of showmanship studying key moments he sometimes pulls clips of
12:12clock management from basketball games to get players buzzing developing a language that
12:16packages complex scenarios and digestible pieces there's a lot that he does here by the way should
12:21be noted as feeder's game management coordinator uh brian schottenheimer has not yet won a challenge yet
12:26in his time as the head coach of the dallas scout boys what schottenheimer has not won a challenge
12:31yet whoa below the belt
